Title: Ranks
Post by: Icefire on August 12, 2011, 11:22:13 PM
I don't know if you've already done something like this, but I've been to forums where the higher the post you get a different "rank". I know you have these ranks because I'm a junior member, but I was wondering if you have Redwall-themed ranks for the higher ranks. For example, when you hit 1,000 posts become a drill sergeant, when you hit 20,000 become a badger lord, etc.
Sorry if you already have these, I haven't seen anyone with a rank above full member and I think that's where it started changing on the other forum.

Does any of this make sense?

Yes, I have used similar systems at boards in the past.  Its a good idea if implemented correctly.  Its up to the admins if they want to utilize it but not entirely necessary.

Yeah, it's not at all necessary. It's just for the fun of it. Of course, being a total CD (Computer Dummy) I don't know how much work it is to set up such things.

Depends on the forum system.  Never used SMF before to know how difficult it is.  Most forum systems its quite simple to do.  The harder part is figuring out what outranks the previous rank.  ;)

Well, we already have jnr member, snr member etc, but it would be cool if they were re-named Redwally things. Like newbie becomes dibbun etc.

Yeah, that would be cool.  8)
I like that idea!  ;D

It's a great idea, but the staff thinks the ranking system is okay for the time being. We'll definitely keep this idea on the shelf though, and we might institute a Redwall-related ranking system in the future. :) Thanks for the suggestion, Icefire.

In case you guys are curious, here are the ranks right now:

Newbie - 0 posts
Jr. Member - 50 posts
Full Member - 100 posts
Sr. Member - 250 posts
Hero Member - 500 posts

Please remember these ranks don't necessarily mean you are a good poster. Anyone can make 500 posts, but not everyone can make them meaningful. A true good member puts thought and purpose into every post.

You know, HiaG, if you switch around the Abbess/abbot with the Redwall champion, then I like it. ;D
Title: Re: Ranks
Post by: HeadInAnotherGalaxy on August 23, 2011, 08:25:37 PM
Ah put the arrangement due tae experience.

Dibbun- Little tae nae experiense
Novice- A zmall amount o' experience, but ztill learnin'
Redwaller- A good amount o' expereinse, average, normal
Redwall Champion- A greater amount o' experiense than the onez before
Abbot/Abess- Heavily experiensed, auld, wize, etc...

The problem is that someone may have many posts, and still little experience or wisdom, or few posts, of high quality.

If I had to make custom member ranks, I suppose I'd make them based on food-related titles.

The top ranks with the most posts being like "Champion Scoffer" or "Glutton" and the lowest ones, the opposite of that, with the comparison being making posts to eating food.

That way the focus is on quantity, not quality. ;)

Wouldn't that be a bit hard to keep track of?
You could earn a title if you contibuted any good ideas or did something extraordinary.

Yeah, like your rank (Season Namer).
Title: Re: Ranks
Post by: Matthias720 on August 24, 2011, 01:35:42 PM
Season Namer is a rank given to the current Season Namer (kinda obvious ::)). When a new Season Namer is chosen, Tiria will go back to being just a Hero Member.

Sr. Member-----Captain
Hero Member-----Badger Lord (or Lady)

But what if someone named themselves after a character that is not a Badger Lord/Lady? Like me? OK< I know htat's a very small detail, but I was just pointing it out. ;)

Actually, that could be considered by some to be a very large detail, and enough reason to not desire ranks.

I would gather that most would not want Badger Lord/Lady ranks if they aren't into the badger characters.  Could you see me with a badger rank and it fitting?  Or Matthias?  Generic ranks are fine and please the most members.

They sure do. I'm a full member. I'm fuller than someone at the Redwall Feast!
Title: Re: Ranks
Post by: Folgrimeo on September 06, 2011, 06:58:03 AM
I've definitely known forums where people got custom titles after they said or did something embarrassing. Usually the titles were goofy innocent things, but you'd find a few that clearly weren't flattering. Such as "*does not want a member title*". As for me, I got a custom title on one board by being patient, making intelligent posts, and never seeing a rank as anything to gloat about. Then one day... I got the title "wamakaskanskan". It's the Lakota word for 'spirit', or so I'm told. Reason for that is I was into "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron" at the time.

Topics asking about ranks and whether custom titles are allowed are pretty common. Best thing to do is ignore what rank you are. Or if you really want something there, then see if maybe there's a "slogan" section... heck, you should be happy enough just in having a unique signature. Rank is not a big deal.
Title: Re: Ranks
Post by: Icefire on September 08, 2011, 12:01:16 AM
Generally, ranks aren't really a good indication of anything anyways. I was just saying it cause it can be fun. If everyone's fine with generic names, I'm fine with it too! ;D
Title: Re: Ranks
Post by: Tiria Wildlough on September 11, 2011, 06:04:24 AM
Hey! I have an idea! What if we had 'positions' that people could apply for, like Abbot, Badgermum, Abbey Warrior, etc. They have that sort of thing on Redwall's Legacy. I was just wondering! ;)
Still, I'm fine with generic ranks if the above wouldn't work.

I think custom ranks (if its allowed on this system--I imagine so) ought to be earned.  Otherwise, the system you have is just fine.  Its not something you need here.  This is the official Redwall Abbey forum after all....

How would we earn them?
Title: Re: Ranks

If we were giving out custom ranks, I imagine they'd be obtained through regular activity, continued good behavior, above and beyond the call of duty, and many well-crafted posts.

This is generally how most boards work.

Can we have Redwall themed ranks though? Like Newbie = Dibbun etc.
This IS the official Redwall forum, and most unofficial Redwall Forums have them, so why shouldn't we?
Title: Re: Ranks
Post by: Taggerung_of_Redwall on November 30, 2011, 09:26:51 PM
I believe discussion has covered why that would be hard to accomplish.
Title: Re: Ranks
Post by: Lutra on November 30, 2011, 11:39:01 PM
Yes, while we are the official forum, I think you'll find that its hard to judge ranks within Redwall.  Dibbun is really the only obvious rank.  It'll cause more trouble than its worth trying to support a rank system with Redwall-themed levels.  I use generics at my board because its practically impossible to rank levels with fandoms.

Title: Re: Ranks

Newbie is not an insult.  You are new to the board, therefore, newbie is perfectly acceptable until you've written some messages across the board.  Show me a board where you don't start as a newbie or some other similar rank.

How is novice better than newbie?
Title: Re: Ranks
Post by: Vulpin on December 09, 2011, 10:20:38 PM
I would have to agree, Newbie makes someone sound insignifigant. Mabey, if someone started out as a low level title from the book series, as already mentioned. Like Dibbun.

I guess changeing it from Newbie to just New would be an increase to. Since Newbie is a title, but new is a characterisation in a way, like one would strive to do a bit better, trying to not be new... Course for someone who isnt new, but doesnt post much, the title could be insulting in a way, i suppose. Perhaps changeing it to a forgien word, like how you would say Newbie in spainish or french, or latin. That way, the person doesnt realize that he is being called a Newbie. Then again, it might be better to just leave it the way it is. I mean it really is the admins decision, and that means this post is really not importain. So i think i'll just stop right here.
Title: Re: Ranks
Post by: Taggerung_of_Redwall on December 09, 2011, 10:39:19 PM
Chances are, anything will somehow offend someone. If newbie does, I think calling someone a dibbun would offend more people. There's a reason why the idea of modifying the ranks has been put down before, generic and simple doesn't allow for argument over whether the order is fine, or frustrate someone with a rank they won't like.
I'm of the opinion the system that's always been existent is the best way to go, if not even less ranks.

Seriously, could we have ranks to apply for? Something like this:

Abbot/Abbess
Badgermum
Redwall Friar
Redwall Champion
Skipper of Otters
Squirrelchief
Vermin Warlord

Those are some, and I can’t think of any others, but I thought that it was a good idea. We could have a thread in Cavern Hole displaying them. Is there a way to have this?
I have a sinking feeling that there isn’t.

No, that is not how forums work.  You set a level for a rank based on postcount or admin choice (in the case of the mods)....you can't just change the thing to say "Abbott" or "Skipper" just because you want it to.

I'd like to point out all members have their Personal Text. You can set this to a title of your choice.
