BOOK ONE - SHADOWS AT DUSK

1

Bato the wolf carried the bleeding Prince Tenchi on his back. They had just crossed a fresh green platau and were making haste to a bamboo forest in front of them. The wolf would occasionally pause and look back. Scanning the horizon for the slightest sign of movements against the setting sun. The bleeding rabbit pleaded his protector to stop. "Bato please... put me down..."
"No Master, we must keep going. I've never seen ninja strike that quickly,"
   "Leave me... I'm dying anyway..."
"You must live Master," said Bato. "You are a living god."
   "How far... since..."
"About half a mile, Highness. I am trying to get us to that bamboo forest ahead of us. We should be able to lose those trackers in there,"
Tenchi panted heavily, "I... don't think it'll...be that easy."
The wolf looked back once again at the grassy platau he had just carried his charge. Prince Tenchi's blood had left a perfect trail. Bato then carried on with a speedy pace.
The bamboo stalks made long, crossing shadows as the sunbeams weaved in-between them. The wolf looked around frenzied in all directions. Anything that would give away a ninja's position - a falling leaf, a rustling or creaking of the tall stalks...
   THWUCK!
A shuriken throwing star impacted in the ground next to the wolf's left foot-paw. He paused. He heard the leaves rustle and the giant stalks creak. One by one, various beasts dressed in dark blue emerged all around them.
"Do you plan to fight with that burden on your back?" One ninja mocked.
"Till my dying breath!" Bato growled back, whilst lowering the bleeding rabbit gently against a rock. The wolf then drew his katana and held it in the ready stance. He brought his blade up to his eye line and saw a reflection of three more ninja behind him. All of them were advancing slowly with their ninjatos drawn.
One made an advance from the front another two charged the wolf from behind. The wolf ducked nimbly as they drew in close and slashed wide. All three ninja jumped, however the wolf's blade found one leg. One of the ninja fell to the ground, nursing a stump, whilst the other two dropped on the wolf from above.
Bato agilely rolled out of the way, the two blade points finding nothing but soft ground. The wolf then saw his chance. His sword stroke was swift and found both creatures. Their headless forms falling over their own weapons.
The wolf then spun round. Three were dead and another three were what remained. Another ninja balanced an eggshell filled with chilli juice and then threw it at Bato. The wolf made a downward slash and ducked as the eggshell shattered. He then heard a cry behind him, "Arrgh! My eye!" Bato spun around, grabbed the half blind ninja and pinned him violently against two bamboo stalks. He then skewered the ninja through with his blade and withdrew it violently.
Two remained. Bato then lunged forward and slashed wide with his blade again. The two ninja both jumped at the same time. However, the wolf's blade changed direction as he slashed upwards. One avoided the blade's bite whilst the other ninja fell to the ground split down the middle. Bato then was on the remaining ninja like lightning and buried his blade into his opponent's chest up to the hilt.
The wolf charged at the bamboo stalks, his opponent still skewered on his blade. He pinned the ninja against the creaking stalks and cut his blade free with a sideways motion. The lifeless form slumped to the ground, as a bamboo stalk creaked and rustled as it fell away.
The wolf doubled over exhausted, panting heavily. He then lifted his head and only saw a bloody paw protruding from behind the rock. Shock and dread then flowed through him. Bato hurried over to the rock Prince Tenchi was slumped against. The wolf reached out to the bleeding rabbit. His face then sank. He wasn't sleeping, he was dead. Bato exhaled with despair and bowed his head. He reached for the bloody waistband around the rabbit's gii and ripped it from the body.
Suddenly, the wolf felt a tremendous blow on his back, which bowled him over. Bato gritted his teeth and looked behind him. Several large figures in samurai armour lumbered through the creaking bamboo stalks. Their leader then unfastened and lowered the face plate mask, revealing the visage of an (Asian) black bear. The wolf then realised the creatures were all bears. Furthermore, Bato recognised the leader and called him by name, "Tora? What are the Clan of the White Star doing here?"
Tora then drew his double-pawed daikatana and held it in a ready stance, "It looks like you had a wasted journey. You didn't really believe that the Clan of the Black Moon were our allies did you? You mountain dogs will always be our enemies." The wolf dragged himself to his foot-paws, katana in paw. Bato then started glancing around at the Samurai bears that were attempting to surround him. "I have a suspicion that the ninja were yours," Bato assumed out loud.
Tora shook his head, "In fact, no. The ninja were in service to somebeast else." The bear then turned to his kin, "Kill him." One of the bear samurai readied a yumi and aimed in the wolf's direction. As the barbed shaft was let fly, the wolf ducked, before he galloped through the bamboo forest. He zig-zagged, bobbed and wove through the numerous rustling stalks.
Tora cursed out loud. "After the mountain dog! He must not leave this forest alive!" The black bear growled to his kin-beasts. His compatriots nodded in understanding before they advanced hacking and slashing at the bamboo stalks. The loud creaking racket was enough cover Bato needed to make his escape. He did not know where he should go. He had failed his duty to Prince Sho and Hara-Kiri demanded he commit Seppuku: the ritual suicide. However, he discovered that the White Star Clan was planning to move against his own clan. Just then Bato had a thought, he knew just the creature he could depend on.

The sight of the Imperial Palace was the settlement of Osaka. It was a bustling place on the eastern shore of Mochizuki and was sheltered from sea storms by being built on a bay along the coast. In the center of the settlement was the residence of Emperor Hirai. It is said that the emperors of the sun ruled Jima for over a hundred generations. They were revered by all as living gods.
Many past emperors were known for being strong leaders and cunning strategists. However, the current emperor was know for his gentle nature and spirit. So, he came to be know as 'Hirai the Just'. The palace itself was behind a deep moat and was walled off from the rest of the citadel. Inside the walls was a great mansion house, with a pagoda tower poking from the center roof and loomed over Osaka. There was also a great ornate garden with it's own pond filled with carp. On lazy summer days, the emperor rabbit could be seen casting feed into the water.
His throne room was atop of the tower. Silk awnings and hanging ornaments of gold and silver hung down from the roof beams. Today Hirai was due to receive the ambassador from the Eshin Celestial Realm. The ambassador, a crane bird was being escorted by his Stormvermin bodyguard along with one of Hirai's advisors. The head of the Nine Circles Clan and one of the wealthiest mice throughout the domain, Lord Shinkei.
"Don't worry, Mr Ambassador. After His Highness hears your proposal for extended trade routes, I doubt he could ever say no."
"The Honoured Claw also believes that the mutual cooperation between our nations is for the best,"
"I must warn you Mr Ambassador that there have been voices within the Imperial court that are against the trade proposition," said Shinkei. The ambassador scoffed, "Ha! Nothing more than rabble-rousers trying to breed discontent. Besides it is your Emperor's wish that these negotiations proceed."
"And before we proceed I must express etiquette with you again. Just a formality." The ambassador waved a dismissive wing, "Lord Shinkei, I think I already know how to address the Emperor. I have been in his presence multiple times. I may look at Him, but I mustn't speak unless I am addressed first. If He stands, I must bow and if He bows I must bow lower." The mouse nodded in agreement, "And er, the same goes for your bodyguard as well." He added.
"Don't worry about Fei Long," said the ambassador. "He knows how to behave himself." Just as they approached the throne room, a large black bear in a white gii with dai katana thrust into his waistband, walked by. As he passed, the bear eyed the ambassador angrily. Fei Long, his Stormvermin bodyguard instinctively reached for the grip of his sword.
   "Hmmm. Angry looking fellow,"
"That's Tora," Lord Shinkei explained. "He's the head of the White Star Clan. Even I wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of him."

Inside Hirai's throne room, his other advisor - the sable Funatzu, head of the Ninjinkai Clan - was expressing his concerns towards his leader. However, the rabbit sat on his throne annoyed, "I believe that your concern is unnecessary. Our past agreements with the Eshin has always resulted in great good for both our peoples."
Funatzu folded his paws, "I see it differently. I've heard reports that Xian Claw has been building an army and that he's been expanding his borders to the north."
Hirai silenced Funatzu with a wave of his paw, "I too have heard those reports. The ambassador has assured me that this army poses no threat to our borders."
"For the moment, Your Highness. But suppose that after they extend their borders inland, what's to stop them turning an eye to our shores?"
Hirai smiled, "Then I have every confidence in your clan and its' efforts to protect our shores, Funatzu."
Just then, a servant beast entered and bowed respectfully. "Your Highness, the Eshin ambassador has arrived and awaits your pleasure." The rabbit replied with a nod before turning to his advisor, "I appreciate your concern Funatzu, but as you can see I have other matters that require my attention. Thank you." The sable bowed respectfully as the door to the throne room opened and in walked Shinkei along with the ambassador and his rat bodyguard. All three creatures bowed upon entering. They then took another five paces and bowed again. The mouse then spoke in a clear voice, "Your Highness, Ambassador Ping Fen. Servant of the Honoured Xian Claw of the Eshin Celestial Realm." Hirai then rose out of his seat. The ambassador, Shinkei, Funatzu, Fei Long and all of the Imperial servants bowed. "Arise Fen San," said Hirai, as Funatzu took his leave.
The crane stood and stretched out his wings in front of him. "On behalf of the Honoured Claw, I offer you the wings of friendship,"
"I happily accept," said Hirai as he grasped the ambassadors' wings firmly. "Now, to business. I am eager to hear your proposal. Oh, you may go Shinkei." The mouse bowed and then left the throne room.

As he slid the doors shut behind him, the mouse noticed Funatzu standing next to him. "Congratulations on the birth of your heir," said the sable.
"Somehow I doubt the sincerity of your compliment," the mouse replied. Just as he turned to walk away, Funatzu spoke up. "I must speak with you." Shinkei sighed wearily, "Let me guess, more gold? Funatzu, what happened to the three tons I gave your clan last season? It can't have gone already." Funatzu, folded his paws and scowled. "It must be very easy for you and your clan, having the wealth that you do whilst others are made to live in abject poverty!"
"Funatzu, my clan doesn't squander the gold we have. We only spend as much as we have to. What about the gold and surplus food from our harvests that we've presented as a gift to the people?"
Funatzu rolled his eyes and waved a dismissing paw, "Bah! I know what you're up to, Shinkei. Trying to buy favour with the Emperor and trying to force me out of the Imperial court. I know how much of a snake you are." Shinkei balled a paw into a fist, "Well I've heard some unsavoury things about your clan too. I've heard rumours that you're stockpiling weapons, massing samurai and mundane soldiers. And why is it that only Ninjinkai clan-beasts and White Star Clan are the only creatures allowed on your lands these days? I'm sure the Emperor would love to hear about how you and Tora are preparing for a war."
"A war is coming, mouse. You mark my words!" With that, Funatzu scowl became more intense and he stormed off down the corridor to the lower levels. Shinkei sighed again. As he started to walk in the other direction he heard the soft scraping of door sliding open and then a voice whispered out to him, "Shinkei..." The mouse turned to the side room where the voice came. Shinkei then spied a brown wolf panting, dried blood crusting the cuts on his lupine head. "Bato?"
The wolf immediately brought a single claw to his lips, silencing the mouse. He then looked down the corridor and then sharply in the other direction. "I haven't got much time. I don't know how safe it is for me here with Tora inside the palace."
   "Is something wrong?"
"Something, no. Everything, yes. I was escorting Prince Tenchi from the Imperial summer palace when we were ambushed by a group of ninja,"
"My word!" Shinkei exclaimed. "Where's the prince?" Bato's face suddenly became sullen and he produced a bloodstained waistband, embossed with the insignia of the Imperial household. The mouses' eyes went wide with shock, "Enlightened One preserve us!"
"After I dealt with the ninja, I was attacked by several White Star samurai. I overheard you and Funatzu arguing just a moment ago. I believe the ninja were in the Ninjinkai's service," Bato explained.
   "Have you told His Highness?"
"Not yet," said Bato, shaking his head. Shinkei then started thinking. After a moment of silence, he had an idea, "Give me the waistband. I'll give it too Bishi. I'm sure that old water-dog will be more than willing to help us out." Bato agreed and gave the bloodstained garment to Lord Shinkei, who tucked it inside his gii. Just as the mouse was about to leave, Bato spoke up, "Shinkei. Give my regards to your wife. Having children is always a cause to be happy."
   Shinkei smiled, "It's a boy."

"You said there was going to be a battle," said Amaru, breaking Sandokhan's narration. The fox bent down and glared at the young kit, "Excuse me, Son?"
"You said your story was going to have a great big bat- OW!" Matsori cut Amaru short as she slapped him round the back of the head. "Amaru!" His sister said in a stern tone, "Don't interrupt father when he's telling a story!"
Sandokhan waved his paw dismissively, "It's all right, Matsori. You forget that with youth comes insufferable impatience." He then turned to his son, "You must understand Amaru, that war itself is a long story. Battles can be faught and won in a matter of minutes and make for very short stories. What you need to understand is that the son of Lord Shinkei, Head of the Nine Circles Clan, is the most important figure. Without him and his tale along the path seldom walked, he would've never united Jima." With that the fox sat up in his chair, trying to remember where he left off. "Now where was I? Oh yes..."

The Ninjinkai compound was situated on the summit of a gently sweeping landrise and was walled in from the outside. The grounds had a courtyard, however there was no garden or allotments. Funatzu's clan had to get what they needed from the villagers of the settlement that was nestled below them. Ninjinkai samurai policed the town with a iron resolve, stern and unfair and their seemingly impossible demands on the villagers made times hard.
Once through the main gate came the exhausting climb up to the mansion house, one hundred and ninety stone steps. Both Funatzu and the bear Tora ascended the seemingly never-ending stairs as they conversed to each other. Tora had explained the incident with Bato. However, the news that his clan had still to retrieve a body infuriated the sable.
"We searched the entire bamboo forest, Lord Funatzu,"
"Yes, I'm sure you did," Funatzu sneered.
"On my oath of honour, we are doubling our efforts to find the Imperial protectors' remains..."
"Then you will triple your efforts," Funatzu said, raising his voice.
"It is possible he committed Seppuku,"
   "You speculate,"
"He has failed in his duty. He must accept his shame,"
"I will not be satisfied until I see Bato's corpse with my own eyes. Also, what boils my blood even more is that you told him your clan was moving against his!"
Tora then became silent. "But, with the aid of my agents you did accomplish your mission. Prince Sho is only a mere child, we can dispose of him easily enough," Funatzu said, his voice slightly lighter in tone.
In time the pair had reached the mansion house. The path leading to the front door was lined by various creatures in samurai armour, foxes, tanuki red raccoons and serows. They all bowed as Tora and Funatzu walked by. When they entered into the great vestibule, they were greeted by Tora's master slave who was a panda. The scorch marks from slave brands indented clearly through the black and white fur. As the panda bowed, Tora glared at him menacingly.
"SAKE!" He bellowed. The slave panda almost cowered at the volume of Tora's voice and bowed many times as he scampered off hurriedly to the mansion kitchen to fetch the rice wine.
The sable chuckled, "Hehehe. I believe there is an old proverb: Keep your slaves well fed, clothed and entertained and they will not rebel against you."
"Ha! You think I'm worried about them rebelling against my clan? Their species is nothing but dirt beneath my foot-paws," Tora spat.
Both creature then retired to Funatzu's private meditation space. Murals of red carp splashing in clear waters, flocks of crane birds flying against red, setting suns and wispy cloud topped mountains covered the walls. There was even a small stone garden against the far wall. Sunbeams shone and burst through the large window which overlooked the grand staircase to the front door. Both creatures then knelt at the low table in the center of the room. "I apologise for losing my temper, Tora. Your support in this matter is greatly appreciated. I doubt I could carry out my plan without you," Funatzu said, kneeling lower as if bowing in apology to the creature which seemed to tower over him. Tora smiled, "Just remember our agreement, in the coming struggle we get to wipe out the Black Moon Clan and all of Yoshino will belong to us. There is one matter I'd like to discuss with you, Lord Funatzu."
The sable then perked up his ears, "Go on."
"This... er, conspiracy. It is true, that the White Star Clan hasn't always been on good terms with the Imperial court. However, my kind do not hate the Emperor. I was wondering why you do."
"I do not hate the Emperor, I hate the Nine Circles Clan," the sable explained. Tora raised an eyebrow. Funatzu went on to explain, "My clan was powerful once and wealthy too. Would you be surprised to know that we had a gold mine of our own, once upon a time? However, the gold ore deposits in our mine were shallow. By the time my grandfather was raised to head of our clan, our mine had nothing left in it. We had our eyes on the mine the Nine Circles have, until they unfairly claimed it and what was worse they had the Emperor on their side. And thanks to that mine, they have bought great favour with the Imperial household and have corrupted it doing so.
"You just have to look around you to see that Jima has become a nation of un-equals. The so-called Emperor gets the best of everything. Thanks to those Nine Circle lap-dogs of his! They have gold, fine clothes and rich food, while we must scrape whatever we have together so that our clans can survive. Well, I say no more! Once we have the Nine Circle's mine, the Ninjinkai will rebuild our status. Give me ten seasons after the Emperor's removal and I'll unite Jima into a formidable island nation. Give me fifteen seasons and I'll expand our trade routes. In twenty seasons, I'll carve out an empire that'll rival the Eshin Celestial Realm!"
"Do you believe you can kill a living god?" Tora asked. Funatzu rolled his eyes, "Don't tell me you actually believe that stupid legend. It's nothing but a story told to the peasants to keep them in line. What kind of deity would choose a weak creature such as a... a bunny rabbit as His avatar? It's ridiculous!"
There was a soft rapping at the sliding door. "Enter..." Funatzu called. The door slid open and the panda slave stood timidly at the open door.
"What kept you?" Tora asked sternly. The panda bowed and then approached the low table with a tray. The panda then set down two small cups with a trembling paw. "C'mon!" Tora berated. "What's wrong with you today?" The panda then held out the porcelain china flask and filled Funatzu's cup first. As he went to pour Tora a cup, his paws shook uncontrollably from fear. The flask slipped from the panda's paws and landed on Tora's lap, spilling the warm rice wine over the bear's crotch. Tora went furious with rage. The great black bear snatched the flask and banged it down on to the low table and then turned his rage on his slave. "YOU STUPID PANDA!!" He shouted as he punched his slave cruelly in the face. The panda slave dropped like a heavy sack to the floor.
However Tora was not finished. He straddled the semi unconscious slave beast and beat him savagely with the scabbard of his massive dai katana. Funatzu watched on, sipping his sake wine as the black bear connected savage blow after savage blow.

The sun was beginning to set and was turning the clouds dark against a red sky as the orange orb had all but disappeared beyond the horizon. Lord Shinkei had returned to his Clan's compound via palanquin which was carried by four working beasts. Nine Circle clan attendants were already lighting the lamps that were fixed on top of the front gate. The four burly creatures then lowered the wooden box onto the ground, allowing the mouse to disembark.
As he stood up straight, Shinkei reached for a coin purse and produced five coins for each of the creatures who carried him home. After receiving payment all of the four beasts bowed respectfully and bid their good nights before picking up their palanquin and started walking back towards Osaka. As Shinkei entered the compound he saw his second, a mouse named Ujio attending to his bee hives. Shinkei approached as Ujio was smoking his bees to sleep. The mouse turned and removed his bee-keeping veil and gloves before he bowed to Shinkei.
"My Lord," said Ujio as he bowed.
"Ah Ujio. I need to have a word with you in private," Shinkei replied as he lead his clans-beast away. "How is Yuki and my son?"
"They're both in high spirits, Your Lordship. Kenji was a little restless this afternoon, but Yuki gave him a spoonful of my honey and he calmed down afterwards," said Ujio. Shinkei smiled, "And what of your family? How is little... erm..."
"Yakomo, Lord Shinkei? Now that he's old enough to walk he refuses to sit down. I've seen him grab an old bokken and tried to lift it. But since he couldn't he drags it around everywhere he goes,"
"I was wondering who that spirited little samurai was, Hahahaha," Shinkei laughed. Both mice soon reached Shinkei's home and were greeted by one of Shinkei's servants. Both Ujio and Shinkei then retired to the Lord's private chamber where they could converse uninterrupted. "What was the private matter you wish to discuss with me?"
Shinkei reached into his gii and produced the Prince's bloodstained waistband. Ujio was shocked when he saw the insignia of the Imperial household. "That is what remains of Prince Tenchi," Shinkei explained.
   "Where did you get this?"
"Bato. He said he was escorting the Prince back to Osaka when they were ambushed by Ninja who, as Bato believes, are in the service of Lord Funatzu," the mouse continued. Ujio examined the bloodstained garment more closely, "What were going to do with this?"
"I was thinking of presenting this to Bishi and afterwards we present our concerns to the Emperor,"
"Why hasn't Bato done so already? He is an Imperial bodyguard after all,"
"Bato believes that he was in danger and he fears that if he tried to come forward with any evidence, Tora or Funatzu would have him killed," Shinkei explained. "Also if I come forward with this, hopefully with Bishi to back me up, we can expose Funatzu and his little conspiracy. He's threatening the throne, that itself is a capitol crime," He added. Ujio paused to think, "Give the waistband to me. I can keep it safe while you and Bishi think of a plan."
Shinkei stroked his chin as he considered Ujio's request. He then nodded, "Very well. When Bishi and I are ready, we will send for you. Remember, you don't tell any-beast we have this." Ujio nodded in response as Shinkei took his leave.

Shinkei was greeted by the sight of his wife, Yuki, who was kneeling at the low table of thier living room with the sleeping babe in her arms. As he entered, his wife put a claw to her lips, signaling Shinkei to be quiet.
"I just got him off to sleep," said Yuki softly.
"Ujio told me he was a little restless today," her husband whispered. He then gestured for his wife to pass him his son. When the sleeping mouse babe was laid into his arms, Shinkei kissed him gently on the forehead. "I had a dream last night and you were in it. You were all grown and strong, your armour shimmering in the rays of the sun. It was a red sun, as red as it rises and sets and at your back were many, many banners fluttering in the breeze. Then I remembered, my son is only a babe and then I awoke, it was a nice dream... maybe I will write a poem about it." Kenji only shifted in his sleep. Shinkei smiled, "If it is your destiny to be a warrior, remember this: all that defines a samurai is his spirit. Not size. Not skill, Spirit."

Outside of the Nine Circle's compound, under the gemstone studded grace of the night sky Ujio stood a vigil. Waiting for a reply from the message he had sent to a Ninjinkai agent. He had lit no fire, only the radiance of the moon shone down. He heard a rustling from the undergrowth. Instinctively, the mouse drew his katana.
"Don't look surprised, you did summon me after all," a voice called from the shadows. Ujio let out a sigh of relief as a red fox emerged into the moonlight, "I wasn't sure your agent had relayed my message. More to the point, I wasn't expecting a beast as senior as you Katsumoto."
The fox folded his arms, "Well what is it you want? Spit it out mouse."
"Lord Shinkei has come to me with some inconvenient news. It appears that Lord Funatzu's plan to usurp the Emperor is in danger of exposure."
   Katsumoto raised an eyebrow, "Explain."
Ujio reached into his gii and produced the bloodstained waistband that once belonged to Prince Tenchi. The fox snatched it from Ujio's grasp and examined it in the pale moonlight. "Where did you get this?"
   "You know where,"
"How did Shinkei get his paws on this?"
"It was passed to him by Bato." Katsumoto then stuffed the waistband into the cuirass of his samurai armour. "You did well bringing this matter to my attention and I will personally inform Lord Funatzu of your service to His clan." Just as the fox was about to leave, Ujio raised his paw, "What will you do with that waistband?"
"Oh don't worry, Lord Funatzu will make sure it is passed on to the right beasts," Katsumoto said in a reassuring manner.
"Remember, I don't care about what happens to me, just in the coming storm please spare my wife and child."
"If it is Lord Funatzu's will, then it shall be so," said the fox before he walked away leaving the mouse alone.

It was morning by the time Funatzu greeted Katsumoto, who had awaited his pleasure in the sable's private sanctum. Breakfast was eaten with haste as Funatzu was keen to hear what Katsumoto had to say. As house servants cleared away the used bowls and teacups, Katsumoto had his lord's attention.
"So, what was it you wanted to talk about?"
The fox reached into his gii and threw the bloodstained garment onto the low table. Funatzus' eyes went wide and he hastily grabbed the garment off the table surface. "Where did you get this?"
"Our informant inside the Nine Circle Clan. It recently came into the possession of Lord Shinkei. Which was passed unto him by Bato," Katsumoto explained.
"It seems that Tora was speculating after all. Never send a bear to do a sable's job," Funatzu said as he arose from the table and looked out of the window that overlooked the grand stone staircase to his front door.
"What shall we do now, my lord?" The fox asked. Funatzu paused, thinking hard as he gazed out of the window. "It seems we might have to accelerate our plans. However, with this waistband we might be able to put an interesting twist on things. Tora says he is ready to march and what of our clan?"
"We still have to make some final preparations for when we march on Osaka. However, we await your command, Lord Funatzu," Katsumoto replied.
"Send for one of our ninja team. He is to carry a message to Tora and it'll contain the password. He is to receive it as soon as possible." Katsumoto bowed in obedience before taking his leave.

The next day at the Emperor's palace, Lord Shinkei was meeting with Bishi, the head of the Imperial guard. However, upon passing each other in the corridor, Bishi had asked to speak with Shinkei, regarding the disappearance of Prince Tenchi.
The otter escorted Shinkei to his own private room. There both otter and mouse knelt at the table in the middle, whilst they were both surrounded by Imperial guard-beasts. "Lord Shinkei, this is a time where you need to be very clear and very truthful about what you're saying. I have orders from the Emperor that you are to be arrested and be brought before Him to answer for your crime," Bishi explained. "What?" Shinkei exclaimed, his eyebrows raising towards the top of his head. "That's outrageous! I serve the Emperor! I'm his right paw," Shinkei protested. "Exactly," Bishi replied crossing his arms, "It's the perfect cover for your subterfuge. One other thing, it is rumoured that you came into possession of some very damaging evidence."
   "Wait... the waistband?"
   "Correct!"
"Bishi, there's a reason for that. The waistband was..."
"Save it for the Emperor. If it proves your innocence, you can tell Him yourself." The otter then nodded at the two samurai who were standing behind Shinkei. Both warriors pulled the mouse to his feet and restrained him. Shinkei was then escorted to Hirai's throne-room. As the door slid open, Shinkei saw that the Empeor sat slumped on his throne. The silk awnings that would conceal the throne itself were hung open. Funatzu was standing to the Emperor's left, his arms were folded and he glared coldly at Shinkei. Bishi was the first who approached. The otter entered, bowed and then after walking to the throne, he knelt before the Emperor. "Your Imperial Highness, I have brought Shinkei before you." Hirai neither moved nor bestirred himself. However, Funatzu beckoned for Shinkei to be brought forward. As the mouse was brought closer towards Hirai, he noticed what the rabbit held in his paws.
Hirai slumped forward in his throne. His head hanging like a dead weight. His sorrowful, unblinking eyes transfixed on the bloodstained garment that once belonged to his eldest son. "Your Highness, the criminal has been brought before you and awaits your justice," Funatzu declared. Hirai looked up and saw Shinkei before him. Still restrained by his guards. "You may release him," Hirai mumbled. His guards did so and then the Emperor spoke to Shinkei, "I was only a youthful dreamer when my father was killed in battle and I got the throne when I came of age. When my wife died at sea some years ago, the purpose of my life has been tending to both my sons. Tenchi was a poet and he loved to paint. Then a few days ago, I expect him home and he never came back... until today. The White Star have been gracious enough to return his body to me. They have some disturbing news too. Do you know how my son died?"
Shinkei paused. How should he answer? He saw the Emperor as a living God and only the truth would be plain enough to hear. He had also noticed Funatzu trying hard not to smirk. It seemed as though he was enjoying this. So, Shinkei did the only thing he could, told the truth. "I would guess, assassinated. By what look like weapons commonly associated with ninja," Shinkei said confidently.
"You see? He admits it!" Funatzu said raising his voice and pointing an accusing claw. Hirai gestured Funatzu to be quiet, "How do you know Shinkei?"
   "Bato told me,"
"Bato?" Said Funatzu, raising an eyebrow, "So he was your accomplice in all this? Makes sense to me. After all, an Imperial Watch-beast is the closest anybeast can get to the Emperor Himself."
"Where is Bato? Have you seen him?" Hirai asked.
"Your Highness, you're not going to listen to these-"
"Enough!" Hirai shouted before he stood up and glared at Funatzu. "You are forgetting your place!" He added before he sat back down on his throne. Shinkei then knelt before Hirai. "Bato came to me and gave me that waistband for safe keeping. He feared for his life and implemented that the White Star Clan might be responsible."
"WHAT?!" Funatzu screamed. "How dare you? I've known Tora most of my life, he is a beast of great honour and he honours the survival of the Imperial household."
"He is also a conspirator in a plot for you to usurp the throne and expand the Empire by starting a war with the Eshin Celestial Realm," Shinkei answered back.
"Your Highness! I advise you to execute this lying traitor now!" Funatzu said, turning to Hirai. The rabbit shook with anger due to the sable's tone, he stood up again, "Get out." Funatzu looked confused in the Emperor's direction. Hirai then raised his voice again, "If you do not get out, I will have you thrown out!" All of the Imperial guards unsheathed their katanas. Funatzu looked around at the various beasts and sneered before he begrudgingly bowed and took his leave. Shinkei still knelt before the Emperor. "Tell me, where did you hear about all this?"

After a long while, Shinkei had told Hirai everything Bato told him. He had also mentioned some disturbing rumours. Hirai was in two minds on who to believe, but the fact remained that his son was dead. The rabbit rubbed weariness from his eyes, "Hmm. You do realise that Funatzu has also brought up some very damaging things about you as well."
"I understand, Your Highness," Shinkei replied.
"I will not have you executed or imprisoned. The Nine Circle Clan has done great good for the Empire, but I'll put you under house arrest until I can discover the truth. I don't think I will have Funatzu lead the investigation, he will do anything to see your clan dishonoured," Hirai said as he signalled Bishi to approach. The otter bowed and hoisted Shinkei off the floor before leading him away.
As both otter and mouse walked down the corridor, Bishi smiled, "House arrest, eh? Consider yourself a very lucky mouse. If you were any other creature, His Highness would've had you tied to a steak with His blacksmith testing the keenness of his newly forged swords."
"I know this is all Funatzu's doing, you'll see. The only thing that puzzles me is how he managed to get that waistband?"
"Funatzu did mention that a beast close to him had given it to him," Bishi replied. It then dawned on Shinkei who it was. The only beast he gave it to was Ujio.

As the sun set in the western horizon, Ujio came bursting into his familys' chambers. His wife looked up at him concerned, "What is it?"
"Get Yakomo and pack some clothes, you're leaving," Ujio said frantically. His wife took him by the paw, "Why? What's happening?"
"Something very bad will happen if you stay here. I fear that you two will die," he replied. Ujio's wife then looked into her husbands' eyes. They were wild and darting as if the mouse was gripped in a numbing fear. "Where will we go?"
"Does your brother still live in Takashiro village?"
   "Yes,"
"Go there and don't let anybeast follow you," Ujio said. He then turned around and saw his young son, bokken gripped in his paw. "Are we going on a trip, daddy?" Ujio knelt down in front of his son, "Yes son, you and mummy are going on a trip."
"Will you be coming with us?" Yakomo asked.
"I'll join you two later. I just have something I need to do here first," he said before he looked up at his wife and grimaced. Ujio's wife then nodded before she went to pack clothes for both her and their son.

Meanwhile, at the compound of the White Star Clan a solitary ninja of the Ninjinkai clan had delivered his message to Tora. The great bear took the rolled up paper and read the message intended for his eyes only. The message was only one word, "Begin."

As soon as Shinkei was escorted back to the Nine Circle compound, the mouse marched angrily up to the front gate. As soon as his samurai guards bowed to him, Shinkei pointed to all four beasts, "You four, come with me at once." Upon passing through the gate, Shinkei marched with his entourage to Ujio's living quarters. Shinkei then knocked hard on the sliding wooden door.
"UJIO!" He shouted before waiting for a reply. However no reply came. Shinkei gritted his teeth with anger and banged on the door again. "UJIO!" He shouted again, "Open this door, now!"
Still, there was no reply. Shinkei then turned to one of his samurai guard, "Open it." His guard bowed before he reached out a paw and attempted to open the door. It wouldn't budge an inch. "It's locked, My Lord,"
"Break it down!" Shinkei ordered. Two of his guard drew their katanas and slashed at the door. It broke apart easily and Shinkei barged in and unsheathed his own weapon. "Ujio!" He called out before he started looking around his clans-beast's living space. It had seemed that somebeast had packed up and left in a hurry. "Check upstairs," he ordered. Two of his guards took their leave to search the upper floor for signs of life. In short time, one of his samurai came bounding down the stairs, "Lord Shinkei, upstairs."
   The mouse nodded in reply, before he lead the rest of his guard up to Ujio's private chamber. They found Ujio lying on the floor in his own blood, the blade of his katana protruding from his torso. His lifeless paw still clutching the grip of the blade. "Looks like he did our work for us," said one of Shinkeis' guards. Shinkei then looked at Ujio's futon bed and saw a piece of paper with writing on it. The mouse took the note and read it;

"My Lord Shinkei,
I take my own life in apology for this unforgivable crime - This subject who wishes ill upon a living god."

Shinkei gritted his teeth together in anger before scrunching the note into a ball and threw it angrily on the floor. The mouse then stood there on the spot, fists clenched in anger that the traitor had cheated him.
Suddenly, there was a audible thump against the wooden structure of the long house. Then another and another and the smell of burning wood filled Shinkei's nostrils. The sound of cries and shouts coming from outside came into earshot. Shinkei immediately bounded down the stairs and reached the ground floor just in time to witness more flaming shafts embed themselves into the wooden dwellings of his compound. He then noticed the flames that started to creep up the door frame of Ujio's house.
"Enlightened One preserve us, we're on fire!" Shinkei shouted in dismay before running out the remains of Ujio's front door. He looked around frantically in all directions, most of his clan's compound was ablaze. He looked towards his own house and saw that it just started to catch fire. Shinkei's thoughts suddenly turned to the safety of his wife and son. The mouse then ran towards his domicile as fast as his legs could carry him. "YUKI! KENJI!" He shouted. When he reached his house, Shinkei barged through the door. The clouds of smoke made visibility low. He coughed and spluttered as the harsh smoke started to intrude into his lungs.
"Yuki! Kenji!" He shouted out in between bouts of harsh spluttering and coughing. Shinkei's ears then perked up as he heard the sound of his newborn son crying from upstairs. Shinkei tried his best to ignore the stinging in his eyes and the searing discomfort in his throat as he climbed the stairs up to his private chambers. He then almost tore the door open and he then dropped to his knees in shock.
Yuki lay slumped over their crying son with a shuriken dart stuck in the back of her neck. The sound of his son's shrill cries brought Shinkei out of trance. The mouse immediately went to his son and scooped him off the floor and cradled Kenji in his arms. "It's alright, son. I'm here now," he said in a comforting tone which did sooth Kenji a little. Shinkei then started looking around for something to bundle Kenji up in. Then suddenly, Shinkei was felt something sharp pierce his right shoulder and hunched over in pain. He then gently lowered his son onto the floor next to his wife's body before he reached behind him and pulled the object free. It was a shuriken dart, just like the one he found in his wife's neck.
Shinkei then sniffed the points and smelt an unpleasant odour along with the smell of blood. "Poison," he said out loud.
"Very astute," a voice called from behind him. Shinkei spun round and saw Funatzu, with two of his ninja team accompanying him.
"You!" Shinkei called out loud, but as he drew his weapon. Suddenly, Shinkei dropped to his knees as he felt sickness surge through him. A feeling of heavy nausea gripped the mouse before he vomited blood from his mouth. Funatzu then approached him, sneering evily. "Fear not," he said. "The poison that killed your wife and now coursing through your veins is quick."
Shinkei then managed to raise his head and glared into the weasels' eyes, "Why?" He managed to utter through dry retching and spluttering from the smoke that had now started to fill the room.
"Your land and your mine now belong to me! I'll make sure not to squander all of that gold needlessly," said Funatzu as he knelt before the dying mouse. "Tell me Shinkei, How would you like to die? I ask because I can end it for you now and, in a way, it would be a mercy killing." He said as he unsheathed his katana.
"Finish it," Shinkei replied. Funatzu then raised his blade and then slashed downward through Shinkei's neck and the mouse headless form fell forward. Kenji then cried out loudly. The sable then picked up Shinkei's head by his top knot, crimson still dripping from the neck and smiled before he urged one of his ninja to approach with a small wicker box, which Shinkei's head was placed inside. "Take the body away and preserve it as best you can. I might need it for leverage in the near future," Funatzu said.
"Yes My Lord. And the head?"
"I think I'll mount it above the front gate of my new palace," Funatzu replied. The weasel then stood over the body of Yuki, the crying newborn mouse babe lying next to her lifeless paws. The sable then looked down at the pitiful child and sneered, "Do not weep for your father, he died honourably by my paw."
Funatzu then drew his katana and then held it aloft, "I condemn you Son of Shinkei... to live." The sable then sheathed his katana. "So that when you grow big and strong, your thirst for revenge against me will consume you!"
The heat from the flames started to mount. The roof beams creaked and cracked overhead. Funatzu turned to his ninja, "Pick up the child."
His ninja looked at him confused. "Obey!" Funatzu shouted. His ninja obeyed and scooped Kenji up and cradled the crying babe in his paws. "What will you have us do with him, My Lord?"
"Give him to the Krinz clan. They'll give him a good upbringing," the sable replied before allowing himself one last look at his rival's son. "Goodbye," he uttered almost mournfully before he made his way to an exit. Upon Funatzu's exit from Shinkei's hall, there was a sound of splintering and collapsing wood that echoed throughout the inferno. The roof of Lord Shinkei's house had given way and the rest of the compound was ablaze in a raging inferno.

It was nearly dawn before Funatzu's lone ninja had reached Krinz Clan territory in the southern parts of Mochizuki. The Krinz Clan were a clan of hares who had distinguished themselves as warriors in times of strife. However, they would never openly enter into a war unless either the Emperor called on them to fight or they were personally provoked. The clan had no walled compound like the Nine Circles, instead their leader lived in his own private mansion. Their leader, the hare Sengoku Krinz, also had a large extended family and three of his sons had wedded and started families of their own. Sengoku was awoken that night by his eldest one, Owaru. The aged hare then sat up in his futon, "Mmmm..." he mumbled wearily. "What is it Owaru?"
"Father, there is somebeast here to see you. He says it is of great urgency," his son explained.
"Somebeast? Who is he, a giant lark bird?"
"No, it's ninja in the service of the Ninjinkai and he has brought us a mouse babe," Owaru explained. Sengoku yawned loudly, "So this ninja just left this baby mouse on our doorstep?"
"Not quite," a voice called from the shadows. Sengoku instinctively reached for the wakazashi he kept under his pillow as the sea-rat dressed in dark blue emerged from the shadows. "Wait Sengoku of Krinz. I come here with a humble request of refuge for this child," the ninja said, as he knelt before the hare's bed.
   "Sanctuary?"
The ninja then lowered a bundle of cloth gently onto the floor. Owaru approached and raised the hood. It was an infant mouse, snoring gently. The hare then cradled Kenji in his arms and sniffed the mouse babe's face. "You drugged a baby?" Owaru asked angrily.
"I had to keep my mission a secret. I couldn't have a crying babe giving my position away," the ninja sea-rat explained.
   "Who is he?" Sengoku asked.
   "Kenji, Son of Shinkei,"
"Where is his father and mother?" Sengoku asked. However as he turned his head to face the ninja, he had sank back into the shadows and was gone. The old hare then approached his son and examined the sleeping mouse babe and he smiled. "Such a sweet child. I wonder what has become of Shinkei?"
"I find it very odd that the Ninjinkai delivered him here. I thought Shinkei and Funatzu hated each other,"
"Wait until morning, Son. Then we will send a message to Lord Shinkei and tell him that we have his son." Owaru nodded in agreement. "But, what if his parents don't come for him?" Sengoku smiled, "Then we will give him a good home and treat like we would our own children."
"Yes father," said Owaru as he took Kenji away.
Owaru Krinz left his father's chambers, clutching the infant Kenji in his paws. The mouse-babe didn't stir or cry out as the hare smiled down on him, "If your father doesn't return, you'll have a home here and you - " Owaru was cut short as he felt a tepid wetness through the bundles of linen. He then held Kenji up as a small trickle dribbled and dripped onto the floor. "And you peed on me!"
Problems in life are never resolved by distancing yourself from them. Escape is never the safest plan nor the safest place.

The following morning, Hirai was awoken abruptly by the captain of his guard. "How dare you wake me in this fashion?" Hirai said, raising his voice. The samurai otter bowed, "Forgive me, Your Highness. I bring grave news, Lord Shinkei's home has been set alight." The rabbit immediately sat up straight and got out of bed. One of his servants readied Hirai's dressing gown and helped the rabbit don his garment.
   "And Shinkei himself?"
"We pulled a number of bodies from the embers, Lord Shinkei, his wife and several other Nine Circle elders are dead." The rabbit's heart sank. He stood there for a few moments before he turned to the open window. "There is also more bad news, Highness." The rabbit looked towards the captain of his guard, "We had word of an army approaching the palace."
   "What was that?"
"It seems more than likely that the palace is facing an attack," his captain added. The Emperor then turned away from the window and showed no hesitation in issuing orders. "Bishi, gather all of the palace guard and summon as many survivors of the Nine Circles as you can find. Also, send word to Funatzu. The Ninjinkai will be greatly needed."
"I am your servant, Sire," a voice called out from behind the otter. Funatzu then stood in the doorway, bowing his head in respect.
"Funatzu?" The Emperor enquired in a puzzled tone. "I didn't know you were here." The weasel then bowed to the rabbit, "Once I heard of this invading force coming to lay siege to your palace, I immediately rushed to your aid."
"Thank the Heavens you're here. I knew I could rely on you. Tell me Funatzu, do you have any knowledge on who this enemy is? Whose forces are they?"
Funatzu then smiled, "Your Highness, I can say without a shadow of a doubt, that the attacking army is loyal to my clan. They follow my orders!" Both Hirai and Bishi gaped at the weasel with their jaws open. The otter Bishi was the first to speak, "What...? Why are...? GUARDS!"
Four samurai guards, bearing the medallions of the Imperial insignia entered. Bishi then drew his own katana and brandished it menacingly at Funatzu, "In the name of His Imperial Majesty, I am placing you under arrest for the crime of high treason! Guards, take him away. The time and place of his execution will be made known in time." The guards drew their katanas and then stood motionless. "Guards? I command you in the name of the Emperor to arrest this traitor!"
Funatzu then let out a cruel chuckle, "Hehehe. Oh they won't be any help to you now, I'm afraid. Samurai, reveal your true colours!" At Funatzu's command, all four of the Emperor's guards ripped off their medallions and each one removed their left gauntlets. Each one had a tattoo of the Ninjinkai Clan's insignia on their wrists or forearms. "As you can see, Your Lowness, I have taken every precaution. For the past year, all of your personal guard have secretly pledged their allegiance to me. From this point onwards they will not carry out any of your orders. They will carry out mine instead."
Bishi gritted his teeth and squatted into ken-jitsu's attack stance, "I'll cut you in two!" The otter was about to charge, when the sable called out, "Ninja!"
Suddenly, multiple creatures dressed in dark blue dropped from the rafters of the Emperors bedchamber. Two of Funatzu's Ninja dropped behind Bishi. Before the otter could react, one of them grabbed hold of the otter's sword paw whilst the other delivered a low sweeping kick to Bishis' legs, bowling the otter over on his back.
The third ninja quckly slew the Emperor's servant and then grabbed the rabbit from behind, the cutting edge of the ninjato blade poised at Hirai's neck. "No!" A small voice called from behind Funatzu. It was Prince Sho, Hirai's youngest son. One of Funatzu's samurai grabbed the young rabbit by the ears and lifted him off the floor. Sho tried to kick and punch at his captor, but it was no use. "Oh ho," Funatzu grinned. "So the little one wants to fight?"
"You hurt my daddy and I'll, I'll... hit you!"
The sable laughed cruelly, "Hahahaha, you don't even have the strength to free yourself." Hirai pleaded with Funatzu, "Funatzu, please. Leave my son alone, he's only a child. He can't cause you any harm."
"And allow him to live so that one day he can grow strong and take his revenge? Certainly not!" Funatzu then passed a nod to the samurai - a tanuki - that held the young rabbit prince. Hirai then watched through tear blurred vision as his son was taken away. Sho grabbed the doorframe, stopping his captor from dragging him away. "Sho!" Hirai cried out, reaching out with a paw.
"Daddy!" His son cried out. Sho was then taken from sight, the young rabbit's cries being heard as he was dragged down the corridor. Hirai then broke down into heavy sobs, "You... You... murderer!" Funatzu sneered at the Emperor, "Whatever you say, Your Lowness." Hirai's features then twisted into a scowl and the rabbit then started to shout, "You've just made a grave mistake, Traitor! Even if my dynasty dies, we have allies! They'll make sure that the Ninjinkai pay the price for what you've done here today!" The sable then disrespectfully false-yawned before he passed a nod to his ninja. In one quick motion, the head of Emperor Hirai bounced and rolled on the wooden floorboards. "Master!" Bishi cried out from under the poised ninjato blades.
"What I've done? Oh you stupid, little rabbit! I haven't even started yet."  Then the clamour of fighting was audible as the Ninjinkai clan strated to join battle with Imperial forces. "Ah good," Funatzu declared, rubbing his paws together. "My army has arrived."

Prince Sho continued sobbing piteously as his captor lead him down the corridor that lead into the palaces' kitchens. The samurai tanuki then released the young rabbit whilst glancing over his shoulder. "Good. We weren't followed."
He then heard silent sobbing from the young rabbit. The samurai then knelt in front of Sho, "Don't be frightened little one. I'm going to get you out of here." Sho then looked up and started rubbing tears from his eyes, "What?"
"I may bear the mark of the Ninjinkai, but I'm loyal to the Imperial family. There's a secret passage out of the palace. But first, we're going to have go to the cellars," the tanuki explained. Sho then nodded in understanding before taking the Samurai's paw. Both creatures managed to find the trap-door to the palace cellars easily. Just as Sho's protector reached for the handle, a muted banging noise was heard from outside, "What's that?"
"That, Your Highness, sounds like a battering ram. We've got to hurry!"
The tanuki then opened the trap-door and started to climb the ladder down. However, Sho was reluctant to follow. His protector then reached out his paw and spoke reassuringly, "It's all right. I'm here to protect you."

Meanwhile, Funatzu was consulting with Tora. The pair walked back down to the palace's vestibule, with Tora reporting on what his clan had been doing, "We managed to scour the entire compound and removed anything of value."
   "Good," Funatzu commented.
"If I may, Master, why did you let the mouse babe live?"
"I will not kill a mewing pup begging for it's dead mother's teat. Besides the Krinz Clan are weak. There's nothing useful that lot can teach him," Funatzu replied.
"But what if he finds a competent Sensei?" Tora asked. The weasel then grinned, "Then I will wait for him to come to me and then before I kill him I will make him kneel before me." The sable then removed the severed head of the Emperor from his belt, holding it by the ears. "What of the gold mine?"
"Taking possession of it will prove difficult. The Nine Circles will put up a fight," Tora answered.
"Parade Shinkei's corpse before the defenders. They'll soon commit seppuku. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to address the former Imperial guard." When they reached the front door, Funatzu violently kicked the door open. Before him were the Emperor's samurai fighting with Ninjinkai soldiers. Funatzu then stepped out onto the front porch, holding Hirai's head aloft and screamed, "AAAAAAGGGHHHH! WHO IS THIS? WHO'S HEAD DO I HOLD BEFORE ME?"
Everybeast fighting stopped and looked at him. Several of the Imperial guard immediately drove their swords into their torsos for their failure to protect the Emperor. The rest dropped their katanas and surrendered en mass.

Meanwhile, Prince Sho and his protector had emerged from their escape tunnel and onto the shoreline of Osaka Bay. There in the shallows of the beach was moored a small boat. Stood on the boat was a large creature wearing a conical straw hat, both of his paws firmly gripping the pole used to punt the boat. Prince Sho gripped his protector's paw as he saw the creature. The samurai tanuki then approached the punt. "Good, you're here," he said as the beast removed his hat, revealing the muzzle and other features of a brown wolf.
"I am sworn to protect the Emperors' children from now until death."
The tanuki smiled, "It is good to see you. Did you bring them?"
The wolf then reached for a bundle wrapped in a sheet and tossed it on to the sands. The tanuki took the package and presented it to the young rabbit. "You must change, Your Highness. You will be easily recognised in those garments,"
"Are they nice clothes?" Sho asked.
"There's no time to quibble over small details. Please, Your Highness."
The young rabbit then started to undress himself, using his protector as a screen to dress behind. Sho wasn't used to wool and cotton, and the black kimono he donned started to itch him. "This is itchy," Sho complained, but was soon silenced by the grimace from Bato.
With help, Sho soon boarded the boat and Batu used the long pole to cast the boat off to be carried by the waves and tides. "Where are we going?" Sho asked.
"To my clan's compound in Yoshino province. You'll be safe there," Bato explained.

Around the palace grounds several fires were burning. Funatzu's samurai had looted the palace and now were throwing all the unwanted possessions onto the pyres, feeding the flames. Funatzu had gathered what remained of the Imperial guard. Bishi and the rest of his samurai were bound and kneeling as the sable paced up and down inspecting them. "As of now, you have three choices. The first is exile, the second is remain loyal to the false emperor and commit sepuku. The third is you will pledge alegence to me and fight for my cause."
There were an exchange of glances between all of the captured warriors. Bishi the otter stood up and declared, "I will swear loyalty to you."
"How broad is your concept of loyalty?" Funatzu asked.
   "Without bounds," Bishi answered.
"Very well, thow yourself on your sword!" The otters' eyes went wide. "You said your loyalty knew no bounds, otter. Throw yourself on your sword!" The ottter was unbound and his katana was returned to him. The otter then drew the blade from it's scabbard and then addressed his captured comrades. "Let this be a message to all of the samurai clans of Jima. What I do now, I do of my own free will." The otter spun around like a shot, his katana held in a ready stance, "DEATH TO TRAITORS!" The otter shouted before he started charging at Funatzu. The black bear, Toro, reached for his blade but the sable stayed his paw. He nimbly ducked and pushed the otter past him. As Funatzu pushed him by, he cruelly elbowed Bishi in his spine. The otter then fell on all fours, lancing pain through his back. Funatzu then stood over him and slashed downward with his blade.
After wiping his blade clean, Funatzu picked up the head of Bishi and then addressed the other captives. "I will say this again; You have three choices! I do trust that none of you will follow your Captain's example," he said, before holding Bishi's head aloft and started shouting, "Because if any of you want to donate your heads to adorn the gates of my new fortress, now is the time to say it!" A silence ensued. Out of many captives only eight remained sitting. One of Bishi's samurai then approached the sable, "Everybeast standing, would rather die than accept your rule! Give us back our blades and we'll save you the trouble." The sable smiled before he turned and looked at the eight still kneeling. "What about them?" Funatzu asked.
"We wish to serve you," said one of the survivors.
"Very well," said Funatzu as he turned to Katsumoto, his fox adjutant. "Bring some irons and heat them in the fire. Then have the creatures still kneeling branded. They will make excellent slaves."

It had taken time for all of the remaining Imperial guards to be put down. The residents of Osaka town were forced to come to the palace, to witness the event of Funatzu's ascension and to take the dead away to be buried. Despite all that had happened, the Eshin ambassador, Ping Fen, still remained at the palace. His bodyguard Fei Long was ever at his side. The crane bird had witnessed many things that day and it unnerved him greatly. He paced up and down the length of his private room for hours. His Stormvermin guard couldn't stand the constant pacing anymore, "Master." Fei Long finally uttered. "Maybe if you voiced your concerns you wouldn't feel so tense."
"If you had seen what I have seen, you too would be tense,"
"Why are we still here? Our junk is still anchored in Osaka bay, we can leave whenever we want,"
"No," said the ambassador. "We must stay. We must make sure that this new... Head of State can be bargained with." The atmosphere was broken by a knocking at the chamber's door. Fei Long instinctively reached for his sword, but was waved into releasing it by his master. Fei Long nodded and arose from the floor. The door slid open and the Stormvermin rat was greeted by the fox Katsumoto. "The Regent wishes an audience with you," he said before standing back to allow the creatures to exit. Ping Fen let out a sigh of relief, "See? I told you Fei Long, nothing to worry about."

The doors then throne room sided open and both crane and rat were ushered inside. Funatzu stood in front of the Emperor's throne, whilst he conversed with Tora and two other White Star clan elders. Katsumoto gestured for the ambassador to approach, but when Fei Long attempted to follow, the fox stopped him in his tracks. "Not you!" The fox barked at the rat. The crane then gingerly approached Funatzu. At first the sable ignored him and continued talking with his bear allies. As Funatzu dismissed his allies, he then turned to Ping Fen, "Ah, Ambassador San. I know that today's' events must have been unclear at first, but let me assure you that what has happened is in the best interests of my country."
"What exactly has been going on?"
"Bow your head and speak with proper respect when you address the Lord Regent!" Tora growled menacingly.
"Lord Regent?" Funatzu then dismissively waved at Tora before he addressed the ambassador. "You see, with the Emperor, erm... removed I have taken it upon myself to rule over Jima in his stead. Also, I think I have the duty to tell you that until we sort this mess out you are not permitted to be here."
"Very well, I will retire to the embassy until - "
"No, no, no, no, no," said Funatzu as he interrupted the ambassador in mid sentence. "You misunderstand. You are not permitted to be here... in Jima." Both Ping Fen and Fei Long were shocked. "B, b, but what about the gold the Emperor promised us?" The crane stammered.
"As of this moment, all of your previous agreements with the Emperor are hereby null and void," said Funatzu. Ping Fen then folded his wings, "Well, I'm sure you'd like to have a reputation for being a deal breaker." The sable then thought for a moment. "You're right Ambassador San. In fact, I had anticipated your insistence on this matter and I had a scribe draw up an agreement," he said as a Ninjinkai samurai presented a sheet of parchment. The crane took the document and started reading. After a few moments he looked up at Funatzu shocked. "You want me to allow you to clip my wings in exchange for the gold we were promised?"
"I think it's more than fair," the sable sneered.
"You expect me to give up my freedom to fly in exchange for a mere six tons?" Fei Long gritted his teeth in anger, but was cowed when he heard Katsumoto draw his katana. The crane bird had taken time to read the document again and then he paused to think for several more moments before he begrudgingly agreed. An ink block was brought forth with a calligraphy brush. Ping Fen took the small brush and put his signature on the document. The crane then knelt before Funatzu, his right wing was spread before him. The sable gave a nod Katsumoto. The fox approached with his katana drawn whilst Tora and another bear took mind of Fei Long. The fox stood behind the crane and looked to his lord for approval.
Funatzu then passed a nod to the fox. Ping Fen did not see the fox raise his katana. The fox then brought down his blade with speed and severed off the entire wing. Ping Fen cried out in anguish as crimson sprayed from the stump. "Arrggghhhhhh! YOU CRUEL BEAST! CONTRACT SAID CLIP WING! NOT CUT IT OFF!"
Fei Long drew his blade like lightning and charged at Funatzu, but Tora was quick. The bear drew his massive dai-katana and swung the weapon with all his might. Fei Long wasn't fast enough to avoid the cutting radius and the Stormvermin's headless form fell forward.
The sable grinned evilly as he approached the groaning bird, the contract in his paw. "Clearly you didn't read this contract properly! It said to rob you of your freedom to fly and there are many ways to ground a bird," he said before he held up the contract in front of Ping Fen and tore it up. "Your Honoured Claw will not see one ounce of that gold. I trust you will take this as a hint that an Eshin presence within the domain is now unacceptable. Tora, have the healer patch up the ambassador and then escort him back to his junk. If the junk still refuses to leave, set it alight and cast it out into the sea." The sable then turned to the fox, "Katsumoto, have the ambassador's wing stuffed and mounted. It will be a lovely curio for my throne room."

So it was that the era of the Sun Emperor had ended. The Ninjinkai were quick to assimilate all of the Nine Circles lands. The gold mine, the object of Funatzu's deepest greed was now his. When the Nine Circle Clan collapsed, there was much uproar over Funatzu's claim to the gold mine. More than that, there was more unrest when rumours circulated about the Ninjinkai claiming themselves rulers of Jima. An alliance of retainers of the Imperial household, high councillors and chancellors allied themselves with samurai clans loyal to Hirai and waged a long and bloody war against the Ninjinkai. After years of struggle, the last of the Imperial Retainers were put down. Victorious, Funatzu then turned a watching eye over the rest of Jima. After observing his rival clans, he noticed that he could always sway them into cooperation with the right price, he had the funds to do it anyway. Throughout all this he would wait patiently. Waiting for the son of Shinkei to seek him out and challenge him. However, before he would allow the mouse to die, he would make the son of Shinkei kneel before him.
Problems in life are never resolved by distancing yourself from them. Escape is never the safest plan nor the safest place.
