Title: Tournament Scheduling
Post by: James Gryphon on September 14, 2016, 11:09:39 PM
After consulting our other judges, we've decided the best next step in getting this thing on the road would be to ask you, the players, how your schedules are likely to be for the foreseeable future, and what works for you as far as a timeline.

Also, we need to determine how large we want this tournament to be. I can either split you up into two divisions, or keep you in one for a massive round robin. If we do the former, everyone will write in 4 duels (3 one-on-one, and 1 group melee), and the two finalists will have one extra; a total of 15 battles in all. If the latter, everyone will write in 7 individual duels, for a total of 28 in the round robin, plus the group melee and final duel, for a total of 30 in all.

I would really like to have a lot more stories from this tournament, but at the same time, that necessarily means twice the time investment from each of y'all. You would have to decide whether you think it's worth it, and if you can come up with enough material to work with in the amount of time you'll have.

If we go with divisions, I'm thinking that we might could do one duel a week. That would wrap the body of the tournament up in four weeks (one month), plus one last week for the final duel to decide the winner. If we kept everyone in one division, we could do perhaps two duels over a two-week period; that would give us an eight week tournament for the round robin and group melee, with one extra week for the final duel, a total of nine weeks in all.

Let me know what y'all think.

I don't really care about the divisions, but I will be gone this Saturday.

I'd really like to do the massive round robin where everyone gets to fight everyone else. If it proves to be too much then we can then split everyone into divisions later.

I think we'd be able to handle it, as long as everyone continues to participate and no complications come up.

*Cracks Knuckles*

I don't have time for extra duels, but I've decided I don't need sleep anymore. Let's go for the Mucho Grande Round robin! (That means the big one!)

I'm ready to gooooo! Letsssss Fiiiiiightttt! *bounces back and forth like I'm boxing*

A duel a week? Oh, dear. Umm.  . . . I could try it, I suppose, but we wouldn't get very far.

I actually prefer the divisions setup. It will make it easier for me since I don't have very much downtime. Weekends are the best time for me to come on and duel!

Don't care long as I'm not left out.

I'm thinking we could start with a basic division plan, and see how we're doing part of the way through that. If y'all are overworked, we can go from there on to the group melees and last duel; if you're itching for more, we can continue with the round robin and schedule duels between the players who hadn't seen each other yet.

Back to time scheduling -- instead of arranging specific duels for specific periods of time, we could simply give y'all the total time allotment, say four weeks for three duels, and let you work out with each other what duels you want to do when.

I, personally, would like to be randomly set up with opponents on a schedule. It seems more fair to everyone and lets us know what duels we will fight well in advance.

That's just me though.

How about this -- start with two weeks for two duels, and then see where we're at at the end of that time period? I just realized we've spent nearly three weeks talking about this, and it seems silly to spend as much time scheduling the duels as actually having them. ;)

Sounds good, James.

Who wants to knock out a couple duels this weekend?

I've fallen off the wagon with this a little bit lately. All I can say is that I'm sorry, and I'll try to set some time aside soon to get my judging standard information and the first part of the dueling schedule up.

How dare you spend time living your own life while simultaneously revamping the entire forum by yourself while also hosting 90% of the forum events and games. These semi late response is just unacceptable!

I'm completely kidding. There's no rush. No deadlines. Everything's cool.  :D

All right, I've generated a setup for a round robin. This covers the first two duels for two weeks. We'll re-evaluate where we're at after that. The allotment is split up into two pools, in case we decide to have a short tournament; I'll figure out what it would take to do a longer one later, if y'all are still up to it by then.

I think this next Monday, Oct 3, would be a fair starting point for everyone, as far as writing material goes. You can talk and plan for the battles in OOC threads over the next few days, however.

Your deadline for both duels (and the time by which we hopefully will have decided how much longer the tourney should go) would be the Monday two weeks after that, October 17.

Will everyone be doing two duels at once?

That was the idea. If you wanted to work on them at different times, that's up to you and your dueling partner, but the time permitted for each of your duels exactly overlaps.

@Sagetip
@Gonff the Mousethief

I believe you two are my opponents. I need to warn you that I will be at the beach next weekend from Thursday until Monday. Just a forewarning.

Would it be ok if we went ahead and started?

Hey James, can we get an extension on that deadline? I'm still waiting on my opponents

Yeah, I figured we were going to have to. It's looking like the "short" tourney schedule, without the full round robin, is going to be the best one, unless we want to still be doing this in February.

Deadline is extended 'til this time next week. We'll see where we're at then.

So sorry about my part in the hold up. My classes are finally overwhelming me. I tried to do too many things and too many classes.

I've been there before (and pretty much every week). Hang in there! It'll get better (unless you're in college in which case lol I feel ya)

I'm going to have to drop out. I'm so sorry, @LT Sandpaw, @Capt. Leonardo V Williams, @James Gryphon, but with all the dance practicing, and no inspiration whatsoever. . . . Yeah, I can't do it. I thought I could, but I can't, and it's no fair to y'all for me to try, because it will be awful.
Title: Re: Tournament Scheduling
Post by: James Gryphon on October 20, 2016, 02:57:27 PM
All righty, I'll post up a notice that there's a vacancy and see if I can find somebody to take your spot. If that's not workable, then I guess I'll take over your place in the remaining duels; I won't be competing or graded, of course, but that way your opponents will have somebody to square off with.

Hey Peony, sorry to see you have to go :( but thank you for going gracefully and not just disappearing on us, that was very nice! Hope that down the road we can still do an RP or something sometime :)

Is there any way I could take over for someone inactive?

If you want to play and you think you have plenty of time for this, I think we can find a slot for you. Del seems to be the most likely candidate for a substitute, since he's only made two or three posts in one duel topic and hasn't been on in two months. I'd like to see if @Peony or someone could get in touch with him to ask if he's interested in doing this anymore, but if he isn't, or we don't hear anything back in a timely fashion, I don't see why you couldn't take over for him.

@Inquisitor: Heard on another topic that Del's gone for the time being, so I guess the job's yours.

@Groddil: Well, maybe a little. ;) You can always talk about what Mokkan's thinking and planning, though, and answer Lantur's question for the readers (of how many guards there are).

If, by the time you return, the tourney is still going, feel free to retake your spot.
