Title: Random Rants
Post by: Maudie on January 13, 2015, 06:20:05 PM
On Skarzs' recommendation, I have created a thread for this. I needed it, anyway.

Why does Fablehaven have no fandom? Grrr...

Skandar Keynes should be in more movies.

Not really rants, I know, but things that frustrate me.

That dang Return to Redwall Abbey RP! Twice now, in places that involve me, have they taken off and advanced five friggin' pages! When I first started RPing, we never did that! The farthest we ever went was two pages, and that was Dan and Faiy. Besides, I wasn't needed then! They just practically ignore the fact that they've made five pages, and have NO FREAKING CONSIDERATION FOR OTHER PEOPLE IN THE RP WHO WILL NEED TO CATCH UP!

Whoa whoa whoa, calm down, Corny. They were probably just caught up in the RP. I experienced that before the one time I participated in an RP. You should nicely tell them how you are feeling, hinting at your frustration, and ask them to slow down. If they don't after that, you may use your frying pan. But try it first.  ;)

Um, I've been following that RP, and... recently, you went into a bit of an RP slump - not posting in RP's, dropping out of Gonff's.... Like Mask said, they were just caught up in the RP. Do you really expect six or more people (that's quite a few RP'ers on this forum) to hold up the RP for one person who seemed to have forgotten about the RP?

*Sigh* Corny, you missed several days' worth of RP, not one night. Anyone would think you'd dropped out. I did.

You didn't even nicely ask the people in the RP if they could please wait for you. Instead, without any prior warning, you went nuclear. That isn't very nice.

Quote from: Corn(rant about RP activity)
The first time, you made your post December 30th. You posted an OOC post asking what happened January 3rd, four days and five pages later. The second time, you posted January 8th; two pages later, on January 13th, you posted an OOC post complaining about people posting without you.

Some RPs are fast and some are slow, but four days and five days is a bit more than just leaving for one night. I don't know whether you were actually on the forum those days or not, but if you didn't post on the RP, it's the same as an absence, as far as the other players are concerned. I'm sorry if life circumstances are keeping you from posting a lot, but there's no reason to get so worked up about things moving on.

Title: Re: Random Rants
Post by: Izeroth on January 15, 2015, 03:31:01 AM
Most of my rants will undoubtably be about nature or wildlife. To start off: I don't understand why Brazil is so bent on developing the Amazon. The Amazon soil is awful for farming, meaning that to maintain productive farmland, you would have to make new farms every couple years. That's obviously not sustainable or smart. On top of that, the Amazon actually regulates Brazil's climate. Brazil recently suffered its worst drought in many years, and many scientists have speculated that it's because of deforestation. The Amazon rainforest is so huge that it actually adds moisture to the atmosphere, creating clouds. When large blocks of forest are cleared, however, this can mess up the whole cycle, thus causing drought. I understand that Brazil is a developing country, and needs land to farm and build on, but can't they farm and build somewhere else?
Title: Re: Random Rants
Post by: Skyblade on January 15, 2015, 06:53:04 AM
I'm actually writing an article-type thing on that (en español :P) for an assignment. We're going over environmental issues, and the world needs people like you Izeroth who notice we need to take action and do something about it. Anything they can do.

On a less grave note, I don't like when threads get off topic. This usually happens in The Cellars, where posts can be as weird and random and ridiculous as law permits, where off-topic posts are allowed, but it still bothers me! :P If the title of he thread says one thing, it should mainly be about that one thing. Here's a list of threads that irked me for getting off topic:
- Secret Forum Crush? (a given)
- Awkward (starting to get more weird than awkward)
- Whats your real name? (this thread has been off topic for, like, 2 pages and it BOTHERS ME, OKAY??? We're supposed to be talking about names, not fudge -____-)

As usual, I mean no offense ;)
Title: Re: Random Rants

Title: Re: Random Rants
Post by: Rusvul on January 15, 2015, 07:06:49 AM
Conversations in real life usually don't stay on the same topic for more than five minutes unless the topic is very detailed. It is unrealistic to think that online conversation would be different. And besides, threads almost always get back on topic in less than a page or two. No harm done, excepting threads where it's entirely inappropriate to go off-topic.
Title: Re: Random Rants
Post by: Skyblade on January 15, 2015, 07:15:41 AM
That's true, and I know it's realistic for topics to go off-topic. Honestly, what happens on these forums is mainly up to us.

Hope nobody will take my post offensively. Just want to enjoy myself without causing an argument ;D

What should I do with my brother? He's bossy and interfering, but he is so well, I'm not sure what to call it. Self righteous? Righteous? Well, he does what he does (namely, stop me from reading teen fiction, inspect every book I get from the library, and bug me when I'm doing unproductive things) for good reasons, like, he doesn't want me to make the "mistakes" he made, but it's not his job or his right or his business to do them. It's so annoying.

As an older brother, I sympathize. No, not you, him! My advice is this: listen to what he says, think about it, but also take it wih a grain of salt. After all, brotherly advice is usually pretty bland (even the good stuff!). And, rightous is not the worst word in the world I can think of for an older brother. At least he cares about you.

I know, but he acts like he's my dad. If my parents didn't want me reading those books, they wouldn't let me read them. I don't read the books they tell me not to read, yet he still acts like me's my father.

I'm not sure I would be able to stand someone stopping me from reading something I wanted to. I mean, my brother hates teen fiction and tells me I shouldn't read it but he doesn't stop me and if he's going to the bookshop and I want something, he'll get it for me (providing I give him the money of course). I would suggest telling your brother that you appreciate the gesture but that he has no right to stop you reading those books

True- but the question is, have your parents read them? Many times parents do not realize the depth or content of something. But my parents don't want me to be too sheltered. They won't let me read books that arouse feelings that shouldn't be there, but they don't want me to be in the dark about everything. I have to temper the more worldly things I read with mind-nurturing classics. I am now mature enough to decide most of what I shouldn't read. I've set standards for myself. But my brother is again't reading stuff just because the narrator might be sassy or cynical. I don't think that's really a bad thing.

But I feel like I might cross a line if I continue this debate.

Hush.

I have marched,
for years on end.
My comrades fell,
as I defend,
The goals I've set.
My army's fled,
Fell as they ran, trampled their dead.

Rush, run back through the fields, I am hush. The ghosts of the dead are awake, I am afraid.

The ghosts of comrades,
Dead and gone,
Rise in my path,
To do me wrong.
As wars are fought,
armies abide...
Should I be tried,
for men who've died?

Rush, run back through the fields, I am hush. The ghosts of the dead are awake, I am afraid.

I really need to give the characters from my incubus story surnames. It doesn't make sense for them not to have them. So okay maybe the jucubae don't need them, whatever but seriously I can't have Jasper, Roland, Isabelle, Katherine, Janice, Liam, Alec, Zeke and all the others and then not give them surnames, it's so weird. Also I'm so obsessed with having equal numbers of male and female characters I end up with a bunch of them I can't think up personalities for, IT'S A PROBLEM. My newest named story, Lightborn Academy has SIXTEEN MAIN CHARACTERS. Well, two main characters and then fourteen semi-main characters. That's not a problem though because I have given them all unique personalities but the incubus story has FIFTEEN HUMANS AND ELEVEN JUCUBAE. WHAT? ONLY THREE OF THEM HAVE PERSONALITIES WHAT IS MY PROBLEM???

Dark
I'm also quite literally incapable of writing gay characters without them suffering SOME KIND of homophobic abuse, often of the soul-crushing variety. Seriously, one world I've made is so homophobic that the main character is afraid for his safety if anyone will find out he's gay. What happens? He is savagely beaten by his brother (I should mention that his brother is both a psychopath and a power-hungry sociopath who will stop at nothing to control everything) and since he is a prince, his dad fires his boyfriend from his job and exiles him (the boyfriend that is (though admittedly his dad does eventually accept that there's nothing he can do and they kill the brother)). Another character, Dane, also suffers from abuse, admittedly it is because his brother considers him a failure on every conceivable level and him being gay is just a part of it, it causes him to abandon his surname and live a life as a recluse with an abrasive personality. Recently I've managed to tone this trend down a bit, Julian suffers from nothing bad (that is mentioned), nor do Robert, Megan, Juliet, Tom or Michael but aside from Michael none of them are MAIN main characters and also in my newest story, planned just a day after that one, Jasper (one of the main two (it's a romance story) is revealed to have been beaten up when he first came out. GREAT JOB ME! I feel like a terrible person when I write this stuff.
[close]

Weird
Also I'm incapable of writing straight or lesbian romance stories. Will I have straight or lesbian romances in my stories? Yes. Will they be the main focus? No. Will I have straight MAIN main characters in my stories? Yes. Will their relationships be explored? No, not apart from Kyla and Nilo's relationship and Wati's marriage but I haven't even created a character for his wife yet. Ugh.

I've also realised that in my second most recent story that there are two straight guys, three gay guys, two bi guys, an asexual guy and a pansexual guy. Normally this would not be a problem except that both of the bi guys end up with gay guys as does the pansexual guy. The majority of the girls are straight and the two straight guys are both jerks, THEY HAVE NO ONE TO BE WITH. Admittedly Roxanne and Alex are going to end up together because they're both jerks and someone MIGHT end up with James (the asexual guy (he's heteromantic)) but the rest of them have no one. IT FRUSTRATES ME TO NO END!!!

So yeah, there's that.

Why does everyone hate Tauriel so much? And it's not because of her personality and character. If she'd been in the book, I'm sure everyone would love her. But just 'cause she was invented for the movies and fell in love with a Dwarf, everyone automatically despises her. And for those who say their romance happened way too quickly for two races who hated each other, consider the fact that Lúthien just looked at Beren and instantly fell in love. (Of course, their races didn't hate each other.) In comparison, Tauriel and Kili's romance was far more realistic.
Title: Re: Random Rants
Post by: Jetthebinturong on March 04, 2015, 07:38:11 PM
The problem is that until Legolas and Gimli came along, the two races utterly despised each other, it's well-established canon that they were some of the first dwarves and elves to be friends. Also, it ruins The Hobbit by adding in yet another stupid subplot that had nothing to do with the book just because they're scared people won't watch something nowadays unless it has romance in it. Tauriel is a cool character and if she'd just been there I don't think anyone would mind, it's her relationship with Kili that bothers people

Why must there be words that people are not allowed to say? Swearing is such a stupid concept. Songs are not "clean" when they don't have swearing, they just don't have swearing. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS CLEAN LANGUAGE, THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS DIRTY LANGUAGE, THERE IS JUST LANGUAGE. Prohibiting people from using words is ridiculous, what makes the f word worse than darn? What makes the other d word which this site stupidly blocks for no apparent reason and is not considered bad language in any sensible culture worse? Who decides these ridiculous rules on which words we can and can't use. The concept of swearing baffles me

I think that words that are used without meaning generally classify as swear words. Like the umm, word. you know, the F word. It has no meaning. That's what makes it so bad.

I know I sound like Captain Planet here, but..

Why do people have to litter? There are perfectly good trash-cans everywhere, and yet people insist on degrading the ground with their disgusting trash. Nearly every time I visit the local park, I see junk that people have carelessly tossed away. I wonder how those people would feel if their yards were being littered in.

Another thing is that even if there are no cans around, folks still don't really have an excuse; after all, if they can manage to take their trash in with them they can certainly take it out too.

Why do I never feel like DOING MY WORK? I've been procrastinating all flippin' summer! What is WRONG with me? :'( :'( I mean, seriously, I'm being such an awful student! I used to be better, but it seems like the more years that pass the more procrastinating and lazy I get! I always feel tired and don't want to do anything except things that I like, AKA writing! How else did I get 50,000+ words? And I really enjoy playing my flute/piccolo! But I hate playing when my parents can hear; I'm so shy!! :(

And I keep telling myself, "Do your work" and then I'm STILL like too tired and stuff, and keep doing all the stuff I enjoy and I'm just done with school and done with life. Being a teenager and a student is harder than it looks. I feel like this is all my fault and for good reason, but I wish I wasn't tired. And I get hardly any sleep at night; I fall asleep at around 3 AM these days, more or less. I'm gaining weight too, and I'm always thinking like "Boo-hoo, so sorry for myself, I'm so miserable." WHATEVER. My life isn't even bad; it's good, but I'm worn-out and I want to hide.

The truth is I've done almost nothing - literally - all summer, no studying or work and I'm sorry to confess this but I must, I feel so guilty. I'm always on the computer all day either on this forum or my story, and I'm always thinking of my story. It's fun, and maybe it's an escape? IDK. I'd like to think that I'm just imaginative and creative. And I try to stop but I can't and yeah, that's why I feel like an awful person.

And like I said I'm miserable and I don't want school to start already and I hardly did my work...and I have SAT studying to do; why is that test so hard for me? :(

Yeah, I'm on the verge of crying; I cry too easily these days. Hope you don't mind the rant but it makes me feel better and this is the ranting thread. Yeah, I feel bad for posting this, just let me know tactfully if it's wrong please; I want to be a model member. And don't feel obligated to reply.

If it's any consolation, you're not the only one with that problem. I've often had trouble focusing on my homework, and my attention span is far smaller than I would like it to be. Frankly, I think you're being too hard on yourself; the desire to avoid responsibility is natural, and everyone experiences it at one time or another.

Anyway, here's my advice: If you ever feel overwhelmed by your work, don't be afraid to take a break. No one is capable of working for hours on end without getting tired, and a short break provides an opportunity to collect your thoughts and come up with new ideas.

Like Izerother said, you're being too hard on yourself. I know that girls are far different from boys, and some of your problems may just be the way your mind works. I'm not going to pretend to understand it, because I don't. I just want to remind you that you are human; don't forget that. Mistakes are made by all of us. Life isn't easy, as apparent to literally everyone. Things happen that we can't stop, inevitably. You have to fight through things, and if that means taking a step back to take two forward, then so be it.

Forgive my tired rambling.

Sky, I feel you about the whole thing. I spent my Summer looking at my computer saying I should write, looking at my books saying I should read, looking at my phone saying I should listen to music. All I did was sit in my bed thinking of what I could do and never actually doing it. School gets me on a schedule and makes me more motivated to so things such as write or read. I know this year of school will be very stressful for you, but hopefully when it starts back up, things start to even out and you can have set times for different things. Hope that made sense.
