Have any of you ever noticed how Brian Jacques inserted a black-furred version of a species every now and then? I am making a list, so if any person notes that I've missed one, then please tell me who. This is what I have so far:
Ranguvar Foeseeker---Squirrel
Zaran the Black---River Otter
Captain Rake Nightfur---Hare
Cluny the Scourge---Rat
Shadow---Rat/Weasel?
Farran the Poisoner---Fox
Most of the moles in existence. ;D
Do you know of any other Redwall characters with black fur? Good or evil, it doesn't matter. I think it would've been really cool for there to be a black-furred badger. Was there one?
All of the moles...
Heeheehee! I guess you're right. Moles are naturally black, even though they were always brown or gray in the cartoon.
Moved to Character Discussion
Oh, so this counts as character discussion? Really? Huh, sorry. I thought it was in the same catagory as the 'Non-badgers with the Bloodwrath' topic.
By the way, Shadow was black.
What was Shadow, exactly? It was never clarified! :D
Well, in the show, he is portrayed as a rat...
I think Brian meant for his species to be undefined. It adds to his mysteriousness. (If that's even a word... ;D)
I looked 'im up on the Redwall Wiki. Said he was supposed to be a rat, although he was often believed to be a weasel as well. I'll just label 'im as both! :D
There wasn't a black badger, but I believe there was a black fox.
Yes it was Farran the poisoner.
BLACK OTTERS!!!
Sorry, that was random. ;D ;D
I really like all the black creatures, specially Zaran. She is pure awesomeness. ;D
it would be cool if there was a black hare

There is, Rake Nightfur from
The Rogue Crew.
ssshhhhhhhhhh i'm still at eulailou dont tell me lol
There is something even better than a black badger...A WHITE BADGER
I do think a black badger would be very cool. But a black wildcat would be even cooler.
That's why I invented Morena Seio! ;D And I'm adding Farran to the list. ;D
cluny was black???
I didn't know that either. :P

did they tell us that somewhere
The only black rendition of Cluny I see, according to Redwall Wiki, is from Redwall Diary 1996 as drawn by Fangorn (http://images.wikia.com/redwall/images/d/da/Clunyfangorn.jpg). All the others suggest he's brown. Looks like Gabool's also black in Fangorn's rendition while being brown elsewhere.
I believe it was in the text in Redwall that Cluny was a black rat. I'll look it up and confirm.
Also, slightly off topic, but where I live (Buffalo, NY) we get tons of black squirrels. Saw one yesterday lol I always think of Ranguvar when I see them.
Awesome! I didn't know they existed!
Isn't Zwilt the Shade a black furred sable (marten)?
Almost completely certain that would be a 'no', but his eyes were remarked as being deep black.

I see TONS of black squirrels around Niagara Falls, and I go there quite a bit! :)
I am not shamed in the least bit to admit that I always shout YAYALAHOOOOO!!!! whenever I see them. ;D
then what was he ???
Quote from: Taggerung The Otter on November 17, 2011, 07:20:09 PM
cluny was black???
Yep:
Quote from: Redwall"Cluny was a bilge rat; the biggest, most savage rodent that ever jumped from ship to shore. He was black, with grey and pink scars all over his huge, sleek body..."
As for Zwilt the Shade, he was only described as having dark fur.
That's the quote I wanted, thanks Lily :)

Do you live around there? I'm in North Tonawanda.
Near Batavia. ;D Not telling specifics, 'cause I'm paranoid.
Haha that's cool I was just curious :D

Well, I think black badgers would be cool, and you think white badgers are cool. We couldn't decide what to put in Redwall, so we combined both. Just so ya know.
Flandor, I've only just realised what your profile picture was! I thought it was of a duck before. :P
Lol a duck? It's an adorable illustration of Friar Hugo and the others from the Cookbook.
It looks like Constance, Friar Hugo, and maybe...Cornflower??
It's Constance, Hugo, and this mouse from the Cookbook, I think her name is Pansy.
Yep.
Anyway, if any of you know of any more black-furred creatures, tell me so I can add them to the list.
Badgers aren't all black, but have black fur. The Wraith was shadowy... was he black or gray?
i thought that there was another black hare rake something ???

I wanna bring this topic back up
What about that hare
nevr mind just saw it

I think The Wraith was a mottled mix of black, brown, gray, and white, which explained how he could blend perfectly into rock. Reread Salamandastron to know for sure.
Um... Were did you hear that Cluny was black? And aren't there moles that aren't black?
That black squirrel was a BEAST
Her name is Ranguvar Foeseeker... And she was BEYOND BEAST! :D
Ya shes definetly one of my all time favorites. It's a real pity the redwall show that they started making only got 3 seasons. Would have liked to see her
I WOULDN'T! *shudders* They would completely ruin her description! I'll bet she would have been some sort of off-gray color! And that's being optimistic!
Well they do about 1 book a year when the show was running so hopefully by the time they got to the book involving her their talent would have improved greatly
Zarran the Black was cool, another black furred creature that I liked was the squirrel from The Long Patrol
Have u noticed most of the black furred creatures are epic?

yes! Hey, all of the black furred creatures should start a cool band of some sort. I know that Brian was against that kind of thing, but there's still fan fiction and I personally would love to see that.
That would be awesome :P

Russa Nodrey was normal. :D But yes, she was awesome.
It's been 2 years since I read long patrol don't remember who that is
The one who escorted Tammo to the Long Patrol... Died :'(.... Hardwood stick.
I seriously need to reread some of these. I haven't read pearls of lutra for so long I can't remember it whatsoever
I'm reading that one right now! :D
I have tried library but some guy has it on hold :/
Rafe Granden (did I spell that right?) is a black hare.
Um, I don't think so.
Quote from: Tiria Wildlough on July 09, 2012, 01:35:18 AM
Um, I don't think so.
Quote from the Redwall Wiki(about Rafe): "He was tall and sinewy with sable fur, and he had a scar running down his face from eartip to jaw."
I think "sable" means black in this case, right? Not the animal.
As far as I could find out, sable isn't black. The word normally refers to a color that ie a very, very dark brown.
Yeah, I think sable means black. In Pearls of Lutra, it says that Inbar had sable fur.

Spot on Flandor, I Googled it, and Sable is dark brown... Which mathces up with the idea of an otters' fur color.
According to my dictionary sable means black.
Mine says the same, but everything else I've read has said sable most often means darkest brown, which is also the color that Sables (the animal) are. I wouldn't classify him as black because A) Mr. Jacques always used black to describe black furred creatures, and B) the most common idea of the color sable is dark dark brown. But that's only my opinion.
Ruggan Bor?
I'm fairly sure he had golden fur.
Quote from: Redwall WikiRuggan Bor was a fearsome fox warlord and chieftain of the Juskabor. His fur was an unusual golden color, and he had green wavy lines tattooed on his forehead, along with yellow circles on the cheeks (this was his clan symbol).
