Title: Black-furred creatures
Post by: Nightfire on October 07, 2011, 02:52:15 PM
Have any of you ever noticed how Brian Jacques inserted a black-furred version of a species every now and then? I am making a list, so if any person notes that I've missed one, then please tell me who. This is what I have so far:

Ranguvar Foeseeker---Squirrel
Zaran the Black---River Otter
Captain Rake Nightfur---Hare
Cluny the Scourge---Rat
Shadow---Rat/Weasel?
Farran the Poisoner---Fox
Most of the moles in existence. ;D

Do you know of any other Redwall characters with black fur? Good or evil, it doesn't matter. I think it would've been really cool for there to be a black-furred badger. Was there one?

All of the moles...

Heeheehee! I guess you're right. Moles are naturally black, even though they were always brown or gray in the cartoon.

Oh, so this counts as character discussion? Really? Huh, sorry. I thought it was in the same catagory as the 'Non-badgers with the Bloodwrath' topic.

By the way, Shadow was black.

What was Shadow, exactly? It was never clarified! :D

Well, in the show, he is portrayed as a rat...

I think Brian meant for his species to be undefined. It adds to his mysteriousness. (If that's even a word... ;D)

I looked 'im up on the Redwall Wiki. Said he was supposed to be a rat, although he was often believed to be a weasel as well. I'll just label 'im as both!  :D

There wasn't a black badger, but I believe there was a black fox.

I do think a black badger would be very cool. But a black wildcat would be even cooler.

The only black rendition of Cluny I see, according to Redwall Wiki, is from Redwall Diary 1996 as drawn by Fangorn (http://images.wikia.com/redwall/images/d/da/Clunyfangorn.jpg). All the others suggest he's brown. Looks like Gabool's also black in Fangorn's rendition while being brown elsewhere.

I believe it was in the text in Redwall that Cluny was a black rat.  I'll look it up and confirm.

Also, slightly off topic, but where I live (Buffalo, NY) we get tons of black squirrels.  Saw one yesterday lol I always think of Ranguvar when I see them.

Almost completely certain that would be a 'no', but his eyes were remarked as being deep black.

Yep:
Quote from: Redwall"Cluny was a bilge rat; the biggest, most savage rodent that ever jumped from ship to shore. He was black, with grey and pink scars all over his huge, sleek body..."
As for Zwilt the Shade, he was only described as having dark fur.

Well, I think black badgers would be cool, and you think white badgers are cool. We couldn't decide what to put in Redwall, so we combined both. Just so ya know.

Flandor, I've only just realised what your profile picture was! I thought it was of a duck before. :P

I think The Wraith was a mottled mix of black, brown, gray, and white, which explained how he could blend perfectly into rock. Reread Salamandastron to know for sure.

I think "sable" means black in this case, right?  Not the animal.

As far as I could find out, sable isn't black.  The word normally refers to a color that ie a very, very dark brown.

Spot on Flandor, I Googled it, and Sable is dark brown... Which mathces up with the idea of an otters' fur color.

According to my dictionary sable means black.
Title: Re: Black-furred creatures
Post by: Flandor on July 11, 2012, 02:28:34 PM
Mine says the same, but everything else I've read has said sable most often means darkest brown, which is also the color that Sables (the animal) are.  I wouldn't classify him as black because A) Mr. Jacques always used black to describe black furred creatures, and B) the most common idea of the color sable is dark dark brown.  But that's only my opinion.

Quote from: Redwall WikiRuggan Bor was a fearsome fox warlord and chieftain of the Juskabor. His fur was an unusual golden color, and he had green wavy lines tattooed on his forehead, along with yellow circles on the cheeks (this was his clan symbol).
