Rake is the black hare in 'The Rogue Crew' and Perigord is the on in charge of the patrol Tammo and Russa are with in 'The Long Patrol'. Perigord has the green uniform, is lefthanded and carries a saber and Rake is from the high north coast and carries two twin claymores.

My vote lies with Brocktree, however much of a Sue he is. A literal battle tank.
Well, I like him because of him being the kind of "original" badger lord.
I like Brocktree for his friendship with Dotti and the events that occurred before he battled Ungatt Trunn. We got to know him before he became the ruler of Salamandastron. I do like Cregga, too, in every book she's in.

I would assume it's the hare Buckler. Mole Buckler didn't have much to his name (except diving off a pyramid of living bodies onto a wet dishcloth to win a custard pie as a prize)

Its a tough tie, and while I think Buckler would be triumph in a sword battle Rakkety is just a much more solid character, not to mention his book is far better then the Sable Queen, my vote goes to the Borderlands Squirrel.

I'm glad I'm not the only one to think so. When I joined the forum, I was surprised by how much others seem to like it; I also found Rakkety Tam boring... the one time I read it, ten years ago. Maybe when I read it again I'll see it differently.

Sorry, Tagg fans, but Grath just has a better backstory. Tag might have awesome character development, but he doesn't even get revenge. Garth does. And not just for her father, like Tagg, but for her whole holt.
And I'm also reading Pearls of Lutra right now, so yeah.

Grath. Tagg, while one of my favourite characters from his book, is a Mary-Sue. A really bad one.
I do like Grath. She ended up all right in the end, and meeting the guy otter helped her stay out of the hole of endless hostility. It's also nice that her ending isn't what was so common in the books. She didn't go to Redwall to live out her days like so many others, but instead stayed at. . . Green Isle, I think it was.

Gotta go with Mariel simply because of her short run as Storm. If she had stayed violent and unpredictable Storm the whole time only remembering her true self towards the end the book, that would have been much better. Alas we only had Storm for a few chapters, however that short period still makes Mariel better then Tiria.
I guess I'm gonna go Mariel too, if for no other reason than I liked the books she was in.

If I remember correctly, Kroova was rather a troublemaker, and didn't really have anything one would want to aspire to. However, Shogg was much more grounded and sensible, and he really did turn into a hero at the end. (I remember being sad.)
I don't really remember what either of them were like, I need to reread Triss.
I am not sure if I have read Triss yet...I think I have, but can someone refresh my memory of the characters? (No spoilers please)
From what I remember, Shogg was the "stout and ready" type (personified by other otter characters like Shad in Long Patrol, or Flandor in Sable Quean), a companion of Triss and the others. Kroova is a swashbuckling, roguish, and resourceful ally of the badger protagonist, Sagaxus. He isn't annoying like Scarum.
I remember both of them being okay characters, so I voted Kroova, since he doesn't seem to have any love.

Gulo was on a whole different level than Sawney Rath. Sawney doesn't even last very long.
In a 1 on 1 fight between the two, Gulo would quite literally eat Sawney Rath for breakfast - along with Gruven for lunch.
Ah but it's not about who would beat who in a fight, it's about which one you like more as a character. Personally, I think Sawney would throwing knife Gulo in the throat if they fought one on one. Gulo, much like his title suggests, is a savage, not a tactitian.
Anyway, I like Sawney better so I voted for him.

For what it's worth, I think it's overly simplistic to say that the biggest one wins. I think of character encounters as being potentially in more than one situation. Past just a pure fight, there's also the Jacquesian "duel of wits". In that case, Sawney pretty clearly is better. In a character tournament draft I wrote up, I actually picked Swartt Sixclaw to advance past Gulo, by simply rerunning his poison trick. Now, I admit that particular idea might be a bit of a long shot -- it would take a lot of poison to do this, as wolverines are infamously resistant -- but it isn't totally out of the realm of possibility. There's other options too, like dropping a tree on him. Gulo's armored hide poses a unique challenge, but there's still some scope for imagination.
I pretty much agree with Jet. I also enjoy Sawney Rath's unique relationship to the protagonist, and I don't remember Gulo the Savage well because I didn't like his book and only read it once, ten years ago.
I did like Sawney as a character. He had a goal in mind, he wasn't completely uncaring of Taggerung, he was actually proud of him, and despite being an obviously ruthless killer, didn't seem like too bad of a guy. (That's not something I hope to actually say about someone again.)
Gulo was an incredibly fearsome foe. Though he was outwitted and played for a fool on more than one occasion, he still managed to be quite the threat to anyone who could challenge him.
However, he wasn't as deep of a character as Sawney, and even though Gulo took part in the entire story while Sawney wasn't, my vote goes to the tattooed ferret.
I was sad when Sawney died.
The one thing I will say about Gulo as a character is that, due to his species, he broke into the "Hall of Fame" as a new, spectacular example of a physically intimidating villain. Before that, there weren't too many obvious powerhouses in the Redwall villain lineup. There's Cluny, of course, who had been around since the beginning. Tsarmina earns a spot just by virtue of fighting Martin. Ungatt Trunn should probably get in if his niece does, although he doesn't personally really do anything all that impressive that I can think of (besides getting trounced when he attempted to fight a badger one-on-one). Off the top of my head, though, that's about it. There wasn't much in the way of villains that everyone could agree would just physically blow their way through competition. Until Gulo.
After 10+ years of badgers being the be-all end-all larger-than-life epic heroes, I don't think anybody really thought that Mr. Jacques would make a villain that was even in their class. Readers would have settled for an evil badger, but that obviously wasn't ever going to happen in a black-and-white world. So, it seemed totally out of the blue when he one-upped readers' expectations and put the second-largest largest land mammal that had ever been seen in the series in as a villain leader.
Sawney Rath didn't have nearly as much of an impact on the way people perceive the series. He was just an old, smart ferret. He didn't even make it to the halfway point of the book, and couldn't be classified as a main villain. He's a cool character, but not an influential one. Gulo was perceived as a real gamechanger.
Haven't read Gulo's book yet, but I've heard there wasn't much personality to him once you looked past that "awe-factor".

I think that's mostly a fair statement. He doesn't really embody many traits that the others don't just as much. He's mean; so is Gabool. He's tough; so is Cluny. He's crazy; so's Tsarmina. The biggest thing that does stand out about his character is that he's fearless. He never runs away from anyone and goes down fighting. Up until the moment he's actually killed, he's still a threat; there's never a time when he looks wide-eyed at the hero after getting outfought, begs for mercy, or resorts to a trick to try to stave off death.
Sounds much better than the villains that came in the books a bit before him (Kurda and whatsisname from Loamhedge). ;D
But ayye, since the poll didn't ask who was stronger or more threatening I'm stickin' with Sawney, because he also broke some kinds of barriers, but in the opposite way.
As far as I remember, he was the first villain with some positive traits--he loved Tagg ((even though he was a jerk about it and probably wouldn't have if it weren't for the prophecy thing)) and treated him really well, even though most vermin parents have little to no regard for their kids.
Thought I should explain why I voted him rather than just say "he's cool". ;)
Raga Bol was built up to be something akin to Damug. He was a powerful rat villain who could assert himself, with a cool hook to boot, but his reputation was quickly tarnished by introducing his failure to kill Lonna straight off. His sword is one-hit-kill - wait a second!
Then again, Damug was fairly one sided.
Damung and him were interesting enough while reading their respective books, but give it a month or two and I'd already forgotten their names.
...sigh.
I voted for Gulo because I don't remember Taggerung very well and I found it immensely boring.

Dandin was the abbey warrior and descendant of Gonff. Saxtus was Dandin's best friend who was very studious and intelligent. He later became the Abbot.
Saxtus was a bit of a Gary-Stu, while Dandin was much too rambunctious for my preferences. . . I don't know.
They were both Gary Stu's, Dandin more so than Saxtus. In my opinion.
I don't really see how Saxtus was a Stu. He didn't do anything. Suedom isn't just about a perfect personality, it also involves unrealistic skills. And from my recollection, Dandin has always been considered one of the weakest male protagonists (although that might have something to do with him being teamed up with Mariel, who did all of the fighting, with a rope).
I just don't remember Saxtus doing anything interesting. He did have that one moment when he said the poem which brought Mariel back, and he knew what Martin looked like, but other then that he didn't do anything, and was forgettable.
Dandin in Mariel of Redwall was kinda the same way. Though he does have his moments, like when he got sucked into the mud, and got captured by the pirates. But for the most part he didn't seem essential, because Mariel probably could have completed her quest without him. I liked him a lot more in the Bellmaker, I actually liked a lot of the characters a little more in the Bellmaker, it was just a better book. :P

I was a little bit surprised, actually. But yeah, I liked that part too. (I also liked Vilaya's come back, but Zwilt still takes the spotlight.)
I find this choice difficult because I really didn't like either character. I feel like if Zwilt had actually been a real threat to the Blademaster he would have been more interesting. He was built up to be amazing and then he gets trumped immediately. Still at least he is a better sword fighter then some water rats and a hare farmer. ::)

Oh, no! I loved Axtel, but Dinny was the first mole in the series I really liked, kind of set the standards for all other moles following, and was in one of my favorite books. . . I like them equally!
