Title: The Percy Jackson Thread
Post by: Jetthebinturong on December 29, 2014, 01:14:55 PM
Well we talk about it enough I figured it deserved a thread. So yeah, you guys seen any good fanart or fanfiction? The tumblr artist Viria made basically all my headcanons for how they look. She illustrates the scenes from the books in great detail

Hmm. I'll have to check her out! On FF.Net there's a few decent fanfictions, but you have to hunt for 'em. Some people have awesome ideas but their writing could use a bit of work. *Shrugs* As for fanart, I have to say I don't look at much.

I haven't actually read any fanfics yet because spoilers. Oh yeah, that reminds me, PUT SPOILERS IN SPOILERS. I haven't read past Mark of Athena yet and some people could be new to the series. I also count the Kane Chronicles and upcoming Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard books under the name Percy Jacksonbecause they're set in the same universe so feel free to talk about those too. Did you guys know that Magnus Chase is going to be Annabeth's cousin?

Anyway, here are some videos with pictures that artist Viria drew
Nothing Left To Say by Imagine Dragons

C'mon by Panic! At the Disco and Fun

How Far We've Come by Matchbox Twenty

Young Volcanoes by Fall Out Boy (Minor swearing)

Centuries by Fall Out Boy

As you may have seen in the How Far We've Come video, Rick Riordan calls Viria's art some of the best fanart he's seen

Wow, Viria is awesome! And I've just had a cool idea for a Percy Jackson fanfiction!

I'm really hoping for a book of Kane Chronicles and Heroes of Olympus crossover. I've read the two short crossovers but I want MORE! Oh, and then they can have all three have a crossover!

I don't know whether Viria's art has inspired me to start drawing Percy Jackson fan art or if I feel slightly intimidated by how good she is.  Seriously, she draws each and every single character EXACTLY how I pictured them.  How?!?

So, let's assign godly parents to forumers

Rain is Hermes, Rus and Skarzs are both Hephaestus and that's all I've got off the top of my head. Opinions?

@Jet-kun:  Mind if I ask your reasoning as to why I'd be one of Hermes' kids?  I haven't read the books in awhile, so I don't remember a lot of what Hermes or his kids are like.  :P

Well you're fun-loving and slightly mischievous and I'm not sure any of the gods' children are known for their art, well, maybe Athena but I don't know.

I'm Athena or Hades eh? Well those are my favourites, not Percy Jackson-wise for Hades but mythology-wise. Unless it's just their kids in Percy Jackson and not them themselves because Nico is my favourite, well, Nico or Leo, Annabeth is fourth after Percy.

I think most people on this forum are Hermes

Yeah, I tried looking up "Greek god of art" and got two answers: Apollo, whose "art" is supposed to be music, and Minerva, also known as the Roman version of Athena.  Minerva is described as the "goddess of wisdom, arts, crafts, etc.", but they don't really go into much detail.

So, yeah, Hermes fits, I suppose.  :P  And my opinion is that you'd be the son of Athena, Jet.

Honestly, Dionysus. More the mythology version than Rick Riordan's version. You're laid-back and fun-loving but you can have violent outbursts of rage so yeah, Dionysus.

Oh look, Jet-kun posted before I could.  Oh well, I'm not editing my post 'cause I'm too lazy.  ::)

I kid you not, the only god/goddess running through my head right now is Aphrodite.  WHY?!  I CAN'T THINK OF ANY OTHER GREEK GOD THAT HAS ANY SORT OF CONNECTION WITH YOU, HANA-CHAN!  (I'm not too sure you'd be the daughter of Aphrodite, but for some reason that's the only goddess I can think of at this moment in time.  :P)

AFTER GOOGLING IT:  I can't really pick a specific one for ya, Hana-chan, as I haven't read the books in quite awhile and am relying on the internet to tell me what each of the gods/goddesses are like, but meesa thinkin' either Apollo, Aphrodite, or Hera.

Aphrodite? Aphrodite?! Aphrodite?! APHRODITE?! No offense to her, but the DAUGHTER OF THE GODDESS OF LOVE?! Apollo? Maybe. Hera? I don't think so, no offense to her.

Okay, really the only reason I included Aphrodite was because of all your feminine interests and the fact that YOU HAVE A PINK PROFILE PICTURE AND IT WAS THROWING ME OFF.  :P

My thoughts on Apollo are that you're a dancer and Apollo's the god of music.  Couldn't find the god of dancing, so I figured that music was close enough.  ;)

Hera is (according to the Camp Half-Blood wiki) the goddess of marriage, home, and family.  In "Meet the Greek Gods" on Rick Riordan's website, Hera's described as very matronly and a lover of family.  She's also described as such:  "When Hera is mad, she doesn't just ground you. She's likely to smash you into the ground."  So... yeah.

Then again, you love chickens, so would you fall more under the agricultural category?  As in Demeter?  *Throws hands in the air*  Iunno.  Iunno!  I suck at trying to figure out stuff like this.  :P

By that logic, literally everything is pointless. You'll die no matter what, so what's the point of doing anything?

Here's my answer: The point of anything is to make life better for yourself and others.

So because this is entertaining, it is more important than working a job or doing just about anything else.

So, no. What we're doing is not pointless. Criticizing us for it is, though, because you know we won't stop and it doesn't make anything better for anyone.

Corny, I get annoyed about stuff all the time, but it's no excuse to let your annoyance spill over into every post you make. Even if something annoying happens in real life, I don't let it affect me online.

In other words, even if someone's annoyed, they don't have to snap at people (online, at least) when they're upset. :)

Yep. There are a bajillion things out there that are pointless. Pointing one of them out is even more pointless. Also, what you think is pointless, many other people do not think is pointless, and vice-versa.
Also, saying something offensive, and then saying "no offense" is like saying "I'm sorry I broke your bike. I meant to do it."  ;)

For my favorite Greek cabin, I've always thought Dionysus was cool. The way Mr. Riordan portrayed him always makes me laugh. ;D Plus, it's quite understated. You don't see much of it. All the others are cool, don't get me wrong there, but I think Dionysus. For Roman. . . . Maybe Minerva? I've always liked artsy craftsy kinds of things.

The key thing is, though, that's happened, and it was kind of a bad thing, but it's in the past. I'm sure us more experienced members can be mature and just drop the topic... *subtle glare*

Should you return and read this message, I'd encourage you to post in the Introduction Topic in the Front Lawns. People tend to check that topic frequently and respond well. All I can do is hope that you do read my message, and you do decide to stay. :)

@Everyone else: Come on. Leave him be. We'd hate to drive a potential new member off due to a comment that was received badly. That would be unfortunate, and leave a bad taste in the mouth of everyone involved.

*Sheepishly steps into the light.* Yup. Rus is right. I am in the wrong, and I also apologized over PM. Sorry.

Aaand now, back to Percy Jackson.

I think I would like any god BUT Aphrodite/Venus for my parent.

Haha, same here. I respect Aphrodite, and I realize she's important, but I don't think I'd want the goddess of love and beauty as my mom.

To be honest, having a parent who was a god would be so cool I doubt I'd care who it was. I mean, look at Piper and Silena Beauregard, Aphrodite was their mother and they both turned out pretty awesome

That's true. But the way I'm thinking, it would be really hard to have a super girly mom, considering I am anything but. I don't even own a dress or skirt, for cryin' out loud! So you see, I'm not coming from the 'Oh but they can be such snobs!' angle.

I'd bring my argument back to Piper but I realize she's an exception to the rule and therefore I have no real counterpoint, I shall concede

I honestly don't think I'm much of a Hades kid. Well, thinking about it, I'm a bit of a loner, have very few friends and I'm into some pretty dark stuff, hmmmmmm

Okay so last night I read Blood of Olympus and it may be my favourite book of all time, those chapters with Nico and Reyna especially (maybe I'm just biased towards Nico, who knows?)

Blood of Olympus

I love how at the end Nico keeps thinking about how attracted he is to Will Solace and he's like, "No, bad Nico, you hate that guy, yes you do, you don't like him at all" and how Percy's just so dense at the end is hilarious and Annabeth's like, "You had a crush on my boyfriend, let's highfive for no apparent reason"

Nico's ghostifying scene was terrifying though

I felt so sorry for Apollo at the Parthenon, kind of cements my hatred of Zeus and kinda makes him worse than Ares. On that subject, Hades is now my third favourite god after Poseidon and Artemis, that scene he had with Nico made my heart melt

Also, how Nico says that his friends now knew what he was makes me think he is more likely gay than bi which is one of the reasons I won't ship him with Reyna, the other being that she considers him to be like a little brother rather than a potential romantic interest. Also this book cemented Reyna as my joint third favourite demigod after Nico and Leo and with Will Solace. This book also makes Solangelo my otp.

That last one though...  ;D  Yeah, no, Percy's ten thousand times better than Hercules.  The only thing I can really remember about Hercules is that I didn't like him.  Seriously, all I remember is that they met him on some island and I didn't like him.  :P

Does anyone else think that this series should be made into an animated TV show (that, you know, actually follows the storyline of the books) and not live-action movies?
Title: Re: The Percy Jackson Thread
Post by: Rainshadow on February 03, 2015, 01:14:14 AM
I generally just like the idea of making books into shows instead of films.  When you have a movie, it's gotta be a certain time limit and thus has several bits cut out and/or changed.  When it's a show, you could take several weeks to tell a story instead of just two or two and a half hours.  It's much nicer.

So, yes, an animated TV show would be way better than the movies in my opinion.  ;)  I'd say live action, but then I start to think of all the TV shows that have really horrible animation when there are monsters and such, and that makes me shudder.  :P

Revive.

As I recently got into The Kane Chronicles I've been looking up fanart today and I've come across a distressing number of images in which Carter is not black. Seriously, why have so many people drawn him with white skin? He's black, it's an important part of his character, it effects his behaviour and the way he dresses. He even says that his dad told him that people would judge him more harshly because of his skin colour. I don't get people.

Double post sorry.

I've begun the construction of a Camp Half-Blood Minecraft map. Now, I don't know how to host a server so I'm afraid you won't be able to play it but if anyone's interested I'll try to post screenshots periodically.

Yeah, people are weird. i once had an argument with this girl about that. It's been stated multiple times in the books! Why do people not get that?

I'll do the next update when I've finished Hades cabin.

Fun story about the Hades cabin:
When I first built it I thought it was perfect and I started to decorate the inside. I had a fire pit in the middle of the cabin. Something I forgot about MC fire: it spreads through smoke. The Hades cabin was made out of coal blocks and the smoke set the ceiling on fire. I furiously put out the fire pit, meanwhile the fire was spreading incredibly quickly throughout the entire building. It spread faster than I could put it out, even with a liberal amount of buckets of water and eventually the whole thing burnt to the ground. I was ready to just give up. Fortunately, the outline of the floor was still there so I was able to rebuild it almost exactly.

That pesky Hephaestus.  Why can't he just let you do your thing with fire?  ::)

That does sound like something that would happen to the Hades cabin, though.  :P

Anyone else read Magnus Chase yet? I don't see much point in making another thread so I'll put it here. It's pretty good. Same...but different...but still the same. It's far more lore-heavy than the earlier books and as someone who studied HEAPS of Norse mythology, that's a good thing. The characters are generally more well-rounded and relatable as well. I really enjoyed it!  ;D

Three more books after that. Mark of Athena, House of Hades and Blood of Olympus. After that, I suggest The Kane Chronicles or Magnus Chase. I suggest the Kane Chronicles mainly cos they're finished and there are some nice crossovers with Percy and Annabeth. Depends what you prefer, Norse or Egyptian mythology.

That's some thins I forgot to mention about Magnus Chase. Annabeth plays an important part, as she is Magnus' cousin. Jason is sorta there? Camp Half-Blood is briefly mentioned too.

They're first person POVs set in the same world and are based on similar ideas (one with Greek and Roman gods, the other with Egyptian) but the similarities stop there. I've read every main-series Riordan book (except Sword of Summer) and that includes TKC.

I am so jealous. It'll be another six months - At least!! - before I can get my hands on it!

Anyone read the Kane Chronicles? I've never read Percy Jackson, But I've read the Kane Chronicles. Supposedly they are pretty similar?  :P

Eh. *Tilts hand* Sort of?

Read Magnus Chase first. Brisingr and Inheritance are massive.
The Kane Chronicles are quite similar plot and character-wise. Pretty basic save the world kinda thing.

Alright so what are people looking forward to more? Magnus Chase or Trials of Apollo?

All I'm saying that Trials better contain Solangelo, Leo closure and Reyna closure. I think I'm more excited for Trials because its Apollo's point of view (the chapter titles are haikus XD), and there's probably Solangelo in it.

Besides Heroes of Olympus and Percy Jackson and the Olympians, there's the Kane Chronicles and Magnus Chase, correct? What are the other series? What's the Sword of Summer thing you're talking about, or Trials of Apollo?

Trials of Apollo will be the final Percy Jackson series. It is five books set after Blood of Olympus (Apollo is an important character) and because of BoO things, Zeus makes Apollo mortal and strips him of his power then sends him to live as an ordinary teenager in New York city. He goes to CHB and the story progresses from there.

The Sword of Summer is the first Magnus Chase book.

Technically it's Percy Jackson then Kane Chronicles and then Heroes of Olympus but the order doesn't really matter so long as you read Percy Jackson first.

When was this new series announced? I've never heard of it.

I don't know when it was announced, but I've seen the announcement video and it's Rick talking about it live on stage so it's fairly safe to assume it's real.

EDIT: Apparently the first book will be called The Hidden Oracle.

I watched exactly one minute and eight seconds of that video before I couldn't take the screaming anymore. . . . But I think I'm most excited for Trails of Apollo.

Magnus Chase disappoints me. Usually Rick is so accurate to the mythology but here Fenrir is called Fenris, Narfi is called Narvi, Jormungandr is called Jormungand, Freyr is called Frey. Ugh. And the Valkyries are supposed to be spirits, not humans.

The one thing I hate about the PJ universe is Nico. Literally, by the third book that he's in he's an all knowing, super powered, and super smart demigod. Rick took a nerdy character and had a bunch of offscreen character development that somehow makes him better than Percy. I get the maturity part, but still! Erg.

I also found out that he's homosexual. Go Nico. (I'M NOT BEING BIASED!!!)

It's a good story, but the mythological inaccuracies bug me to no end.

He was forced to grow up too quickly. And he may have gained his knowledge from Hades himself, from what I understand, by TLO he's been in regular contact with Hades. Rick took a nerdy character and had a bunch of offscreen character development that somehow makes him better than Percy. I get the maturity part If you read between the lines of PJO and read the actual Heroes of Olympus series, he's really not that mature. Intelligent? Yes. Powerful? Certainly. But not mature., but still! Erg.

I also found out that he's homosexual. Go Nico. (I'M NOT BEING BIASED!!!)

So yeah, I finished the second series. What next - Magnus Chase or Kane Chronicles?

It doesn't really matter, but Kane Chronicles is finished, so I'd go with that.

So what do you guys think of the cover and excerpt of The Hidden Oracle (The first Trials of Apollo book)?

Here's the cover
(http://www.gannett-cdn.com/-mm-/19b90c26227e599e8ebab3e6c216c14048c86f55/c=0-150-1688-2401&r=537&c=0-0-534-712/local/-/media/2015/12/04/USATODAY/USATODAY/635848268713504573-Trials-of-Apollo-Final-cover-for-reveal.jpg)
Or at least that's the American cover.
The excerpt can be found here:

The cover's decent, I like it.

And the excerpt! It's hilarious. It's made me even more excited!

I was really mad when I saw that.

Anyone want to see the horrible English covers for the Riordan books?

The HoO ones are the worst. I just really want to know what was going through the publisher's heads when they decided to change the absolutely fantastic covers that you guys have for these books. Why does the British publishing industry hate art? I guarantee there'd be a lot more sales if we had books with the covers from America.
