Redwall Abbey

Crazy idea that just came to me: What if all the Badger Lords and Ladies were related to each other, up until Russano (biologically speaking; I'm not saying anything against adoption)?

In Mossflower, Bella says, "You must understand only male badgers went to Salamandastron," and later, Boar says, "Let's start at the beginning. See here?[...]Our kind have come here since creatures first felt the sun. Only warriors, the brave of heart and strong of will, are listed here. See: Uthrun the Gripper, Spearlady Gorse, Bluestripe the Wild, Ceteruler..."

Now, there's plenty of female Badger Lords, starting with Lady Cregga Rose Eyes, and even in Mossflower, there's Spearlady Gorse. Now, I have a few explanations:

• Bella did not know of Spearlady Gorse, and believed only males went questing for Salamandastron as Boar didn't consider her to be next in line.
• Spearlady is a just a title (odd to call a male Spearlady, but... *shrugs*)
• Spearlady Gorse was a Badger Lord's mate, and ruled after her mate was killed, as her son was too young to rule.

With regards to Cregga, by the time she became Badger Lady, attitudes towards female rulers had changed.

So, the ancestry goes something like this:

• Urthrun the Gripper: Mate of Spearlady Gorse, father of Bluestripe the Wild. Was killed sometime in Bluestripe's youth, leaving his mate in charge until Bluestripe was old enough.
• Spearlady Gorse: Mate of Urthrun the Gripper, mother of Bluestripe the Wild. Ruled Salamandastron after the death of her mate until Bluestripe was old enough to take over.
• Bluestripe the Wild: Son of Urthrun the Gripper and Spearlady Gorse, father of Ceteruler the Just.
• Ceteruler the Just: Son of Bluestripe the Wild, father of Stonepaw.
• Lord Stonepaw: Mate of Sable Brock, father of Lord Brocktree. Ruler of Mossflower until he left for Salamandastron. He died defending his hares from the Horde of Ungatt Trunn in the catacombs beneath Salamandastron and is entombed in a bottomless pool. He had ruled the Mountain longer than any other Badger Lord to date.
• Lady Sable Brock: Mate of Stonepaw, mother of Brocktree. Queen Consort of Mossflower (albeit not called Queen). She once helped the injured Olav Skyfurrow, and wrote down directions to Salamandastron.
• Lord Brocktree: Son of Stonepaw and Sable Brock, father of Boar, grandfather of Bella, great-grandfather of Sunflash. Badger Lord of Salamandastron and founder of the Long Patrol. His weapon of choice was a broadsword. His father left to rule Salamandastron when Brocktree was young, just as Brocktree was called to the Mountain as Ungatt Trunn attacked. He later shared leadership over Salamandastron with Boar for several years before his death. He was entombed in a secret chamber in Salamandastron.
• Boar the Fighter: Male badger with a beard and silver fur. Father of Bella, father-in-law of Barkstripe, son of Brocktree, grandfather of Sunflash. He forged Martin a new sword at Salamandastron and was an excellent swordfighter himself. He was killed in battle with Ripfang's searats.
• Bella of Brockhall: Brown-eyed female badger. Daughter of Boar, granddaughter of Brocktree, mother of Sunflash, widow of Barkstripe. Her mother died when she was young. In her youth she traveled far and wide, and stayed at Loamhedge for awhile, where she befriended Abbess Germaine. She later met and married Barkstripe in the far southeast and then returned to Brockhall. She was the leader of the Corim and was the first Badger Mother of Redwall. She was reunited with Sunflash in old age, when she was stiff, frail, wore glasses because of failing sight and had silver fur. When she passed away several seasons later she was regarded as the oldest badger known.
• Barkstripe: Male badger. Husband of Bella, son-in-law of Boar, father of Sunflash. He met and married Bella in his homeland in the far southeast of Mossflower, then moved with her to Brockhall. Boar soon left for Salamandastron, and Barkstripe ruled in his stead. He was more of a farmer than a warrior, however, and he was killed in the first battle against Verdauga.
• Sunflash the Mace: Son of Bella and Barkstripe, grandson of Boar, great-grandson of Old Lord Brocktree. He was born less than a year before Verdauga arrived in Mossflower. He snuck out of Brockhall one night to avenge his father's death but was far too young to face Kotir. He was presumed dead but was actually the prisoner of Swartt Sixclaw, who called him "Scumtripe." Sunflash was about the same age as Swartt. He had a golden-colored headstripe and dark brown eyes. He crippled Swartt's sixclaw while escaping with Skarlath, who named him Sunflash because he could not remember his real name. His favorite weapon was a large mace. He was a defender of the poor and helpless who liked writing poems, farming and playing with young ones. He was a lifelong enemy of Swartt, whom he eventually killed. He later visited Redwall and was reunited with Bella. After her death, he moved back to Salamandastron, changed his name to "Sunstripe" and became a farmer.
• Rawnblade Widestripe: Lord of Salamandastron. Maternal great-grandson (daughter's daughter's son) of Sunstripe/Sunflash the Mace. He had brown eyes. He carried the sword Verminfate and was the sworn enemy of Gabool and all searats.
• Loambudd: Either Rawnblade's daughter, born after the events of Mariel of Redwall and The Bellmaker, or his niece. Wife of Urthclaw, mother of Urthhound, grandmother of Urthstripe and Urthwyte. Females were still not allowed to rule Salamandastron. She was a mighty fighter in her younger days. After Ferahgo conquered the Southwest Lands she took Urthwyte and fled eastward.  She and Ashnin came to live on the island in the Big Inland Lake with Urthwyte. When Salamandastron was under siege by the forces of Ferahgo, she traveled there to assist. She did not arrive in time to save Urthstripe's life, but she stayed on to help her other grandson, Urthwyte, rule the mountain.
• Urthclaw: Husband of Loambudd, father of Urthhound, grandfather of Urthwyte and Urthstripe. He lived in the Southwest Lands but had already been dead for many seasons when Urthstripe and Urthwyte were born.
• Urthhound: Son of Loambudd and Urthclaw, husband of Urthrun and father of Urthstripe and Urthwyte. He was known a very strong and wise. He was the ruler of the Southwest Lands before Ferahgo killed him and took his medallion. He did not become ruler of Salamandastron as he was the only heir to the Southwest Lands.
• Urthrun: Wife of Urthhound and mother of Urthstripe and Urthwyte. She lived in the Southwest Lands and was known for her great beauty and gentleness. She was killed by Ferahgo at her husband's side, just one season after giving birth to the twins.
• Urthstripe the Strong: Grandson of Loambudd and Urthclaw, son of Urthound and Urthrun, twin brother of Urthwyte, adoptive father of Mara. He was born in the autumn in the Southwest Lands but was orphaned just one season later. He went on to become Lord of Salamandastron. He was a fearsome warrior plagued by Bloodwrath. He carried a huge spear with a leaf-shaped blade and barbed crosstrees. He died in battle against Ferahgo's horde, but managed to take Ferahgo with him by jumping from the top of Salamandastron while holding onto the weasel.
• Mara: Adopted daughter of Urthstripe. Best friend of Pikkle. Attitudes towards female Badger Lords were changing, but Mara was either not of the bloodline, or she simply did not want to become Lord of the Mountain, relinquishing the position to her long-lost uncle Urthwyte. Urthstripe found her as orphan near Salamandastron and raised her as his own, giving her the nickname "Browneyes."  After running away from home in a fit of youthful rebellion and encountering many adventures and dangers, she came to be the Badger Mother of Redwall.
• Urthwyte the Mighty: Albino male badger. Grandson of Loambudd and Urthclaw, son of Urthhound and Urthrun, twin brother of Urthstripe. He was a bit simple-minded but very strong and kind. He carried an oaken war club. He was born in the autumn in the Southwest Lands but was orphaned less than a season later. His grandmother fled eastward with him, and he lived with Loambudd and Ashnin on the island in the Big Inland Lake for many years. He later succeeded Urthstripe as Badger Lord of Salamandastron.
• Lady Cregga Rose Eyes: Daughter of Urthwyte. As Lady of Salamandastron, her favorite weapon was a huge pike and she was skilled in the forge. Her eyes were perpetually tinged with the light of the Bloodwrath. She killed Damug Warfang at the battle at the Ridge of a Thousand, but was blinded. She then unofficially adopted Russano and retired to be the Mother of the Redwall Dibbuns. She ran the abbey between Abbess Song's death and Abbess Mhera's installation. She was killed by Vallug Bowbeast.
• Russano the Wise: Badger Lord of Salamandastron. Adopted son of Cregga Rose Eyes.  Husband of Rosalaun, father of Snowstripe and Melanius. As a baby, he was cared for by an old badgerwife who was killed by Rapscallions. Then the Long Patrol took him to Redwall Abbey, where Cregga Rose Eyes took him under her wing and trained him. He later succeeded her as ruler of Salamandastron and wrote down the saga of Lord Brocktree. He helped drive the Juskabor away from Redwall Abbey. At that time his attire was a plain brown cloak and tabard with a wide woven belt.
• Rosalaun: Badger Lady of Salamandastron. Wife of Russano, mother of Snowstripe and Melanius.
• Melanius: Daughter of Lord Russano and Lady Rosalaun of Salamandastron. Three seasons older than her brother Snowstripe.
• Snowstripe: Son of Lord Russano and Lady Rosalaun of Salamandastron. Three seasons younger than his sister Melanius.
• Lady Merola: Wife of Hightor, mother of Sagaxus. Russano the Wise was her "fifth great grandsire." She was friends with Memm Flackery when the hare lived at Salamandastron.
• Lord Hightor: Husband of Merola, father of Sagaxus. Ruler of Salamandastron.
• Sagaxus (Sagax): Son of Hightor and Merola. His name means "wise." He left his home at Salamandastron with Bescarum and Kroova to go questing, and returned as a more mature badger after having learned the way of the warrior helping Triss and her friends. He used Plugg Firetail's double-bladed axe as his weapon. He spent much of his time at Redwall but still visited Salamandastron regularly.
• Grawn: Son of Sagaxus. Adoptive father of Lonna Bowstripe. Killed by Raga Bol on the coast of northeastern Mossflower.
• Lonna Bowstripe: Gigantic male badger. He never knew his parents, and was raised by Grawn. He was said to have been "a fussy babe." He possessed the gift of a Seer, something very few badgers can boast. He was also amazingly skilled with a bow and arrow.  He had dark eyes, and after a near-fatal encounter with Raga Bol he had a jagged scar lengthwise across his face. He wore a simple, rust-hued smock and a woven sash.  He is fond of Dibbuns. After defeating Raga Bol and his crew at Redwall, he went on to become Lord of Salamandastron.
• Asheye: Son of Lonna Bowstripe. Lord Asheye, originally named Ferlon, was a silver-furred Badger Lord of Salamandastron and the brother of Tabura Melutar. As a youth, Ferlon was prone to a savage Bloodwrath and quite destructive in battle. Eventually, his gray eyes were blinded from his rampages, in a similar manner to Cregga Rose Eyes.
• Melutar: Melutar (better known by his title, the Tabura) was the brother of Badger Lord Asheye, adoptive father of Salixa.
• Salixa: Lady Salixa was the wife of Gorath the Flame, the mother of Rowanbloom, and the adopted daughter of the Tabura. When she was younger he rescued her from a pack of vermin. She was a trained healer and considered a beautiful singer.
• Gorath the Flame: Gorath the Flame was a Salamandastron ruler, the husband of Salixa, and the father of Rowanbloom. Before he learned to control himself, he had a fierce and raging Bloodwrath. Gorath's family originated from the far southern lands.
• Rowanbloom: Rowanbloom was the daughter of Salixa and Gorath the Flame. Mother of Mandoral Highpeak.
• Mandoral Highpeak: Son of Rowanbloom. Lord Mandoral Highpeak was a male Badger Lord of Salamandastron who commanded the Long Patrol. Highpeak was a scholarly Badger Lord, dedicating himself to studying many of the texts within Salamandastron.
• Brang Forgefire: Maternal grandson of Mandoral Highpeak: Brang Forgefire was a Badger Lord of the mountain stronghold of Salamandastron.
• Violet Wildstripe: Maternal granddaughter of Brang Forgefire.
