Put all normal shout box content here. ;D
Unnecessary, I know. Just like the shout box!
That's your opinion!
Matthias posted up some links to some cool features; I want to see about getting some of them in ASAP.
So there is a trade.
Good.
Can we post several times in a row here too?
No.
Going to begin working on Core to institute the optional-background switch option so I can kill Experimental ASAP.
I'm playing off my boredom by drowning my sorrows in Jedi Academy.
Check the "Profile" section.
Personal notes? How would that work?
Just type stuff in and hit Save, I think.
Do be warned that admins can look at it, so it's really the "Personal & Matthias & James Notes".
I see.
Hello.
Hey Corn.
Hi Corn.
Hey you two! Miss me?
Hey
It had been a little while.
A bit. ;)
I think my message either stunned people, is being ignored, or perhaps people are listening for once.
It sounded like something I might have written when I was angry.

Six topics solely dedicated to the shoutbox. Like the number 7, I can't even.

New feature that Matthias recommended we install. You can throw in drafts for posts, stuff you don't feel like putting in your own "Notes" app, whatever in there. If nobody uses it, it still shouldn't be any drag on the forum, so I figured, what could it hurt.
Where can I find it?
@Sagetip: Introduce your character.
UGH. Fine.
I will next week.
So.

If you go to your profile, and click "show posts", next to "messages," "topics," and "attachments," there are now two more buttons: "Thanked posts," (which is all of your posts that have been thanked) and "Posts thanked per user." (which is posts that you have thanked).

Be aware that these opinions are coming from a hypersensitive perfectionist, but I honestly don't. I'm excited about the "Say Thanks" function (gratitude is an attitude!), but having the number of thanks displayed with the name and rank, not so much. It almost makes it seem like receiving thanks is a competition, and the numbers may not be reliable (for example, I just went on a thanking rampage, so it's likely that they're currently biased to the people who have helped me in particular).
Unfortunately, the "Say Thanks" function and the extra line under the Username may be a package deal. If not, though, I would personally like to see the latter gone and the former still around.
Perhaps I'm just overreacting, but I wanted to come out and say it.
Ok, I figured it out. Go to Profile, then under Show Posts it should tell you what posts were thanked and who thanked them.

What do you think about the country function? Is it appropriate to put anything you want?
Whoops, wrong topic. :P
Also, "Stupid Sysiphus" DOES save PMs.
The previous post thing, I think is a quirk of Sisyphus (which was very much a WIP). I thought its functionality was good enough to give it a trial run. It is definitely a diamond in the rough, though; in addition to this, it chokes if you try to do anything with more than one post at a time. I like the idea, but if it turns out to be too much of a hassle, we might get rid of it.
As far as country selection go, it's your profile; do what you want with it. I'd personally prefer for it to be the country of someone's birth, or the country they currently reside in/are a citizen of, but it's up to y'all what you want to do with it.
I saw the "Thanks" count thing potentially being a problem from the moment I installed it, but decided to leave it in to see how that'd fly. Now that I've gotten some feedback, I went with that and my instincts and turned that part off.
Eyy
I was only gonna put it on long enough for someone to notice, but if you think so it can stay... ;D

@Sagetip: Hey.
Hi.
Accidentally broke the Experimental theme last night; guess I'll have to fix it again.
Or else fix Core to incorporate the switcher I wanted it to have, and then axe Experimental altogether, which is what I'd really like to do.
I see.
I'd like to do it today, but I really ought to spend a few hours doing schoolwork instead. I've fallen behind.

@James Gryphon: Hey.
@Sagetip It is? What if I told you that I've only seen like 30 minutes of one of the Star Wars movies and have no idea what I'm referencing? XD
It's really obscure. James would get it, it's from the old game Jedi Outcast. The Jedi is choking the dark lord's apprentice, and she says "I'm not brave enough to die!"
It seemed similar to what you said.
Experimental theme should be fixed. Things should be bug-free enough to be able to wait until I'm caught up on school before I make more changes.

SMAEME
It was a typo on purpose.
It's not supposed to be bedtime yet.
This barking dog and moaning cat are driving me crazy.
Maybe you should put some headphones in if they won't be quiet.
I did. It mostly blocks out the cat, but the dog is so loud that I can't stop that noise completely. (When she's moaning or barking full-power, you can't hear yourself think.)
Music?
Side note: I feel like I'm going to puke. How fun.
Side note 2: YAY IT'S GONNA RAIN!
That's even with music.
@SN1: I'm sorry to hear about that. It's been a little while since I had a stomach virus, but not so long that I can't remember what it feels like. I didn't enjoy it.
Wow. You dog has some lungs. o.O
Huh, I'm not sure it's it's a stomach virus or not. Thanks for bringing that up though, I hadn't thought about that option.
@Groddil: Is your PM system still broken?
@Groddil:
Well, this is a temporary fix. But try this:
Go to Profile, then Personal Messaging (under "Modify Profile"). Switch "Display personal messages"'s setting from "As a conversation" to "All at once". That should make it usable in the meantime.
This is an old bug. I had hoped it was just a fluke when it appeared (and I uninstalled the mod) the first time, so I reinstalled it when a few members asked me for it. It adds some cool stuff, but I might end up axing it again if it continues to be a problem. I posted on its author's support topic so that he knows (turns out that he's considering rewriting the mod from the ground up, for other reasons, so we might not get a positive response for a while).
Hahaha, I'm finally coloring in Kit's fox!!!
@Kitsune
@James Gryphon: Inconvenient, but working for the time being...
I've had it set that way for a while. I don't remember whether it broke (again) and that's why I changed it, or if I just got sick of conversation mode. I'll want to look to see whether there's viable alternative mods that replace some of this mod's features so I can axe it, or if people would be happiest with just using this mod, for all of its flaws.

Iffy to give it a name. Really nervous about something, even though I know it needs to be done. It's a fifty fifty chance, and it's probably on the down end. Also, any of y'all want to to be the 3,000 view on my forum fanfic?

So what are some of the other new mods for the forum that haven't been implemented yet?
There's a word count mod (for the post page) that isn't in yet, I believe because of issues with Experimental.

@Kitsune: Man, that sounds rough. I usually just get no response when I text people. Seems like a blessing in your case. Just PM me if you want to talk 'bout anything.
@danflorreguba: I don't know when you'll see this, but I think it's kinda funny how we seem to have a knack for wall-of-text debates, and taking long periods of time to type them out. You remind me of a
frienemy fellow I used to hang out with online. Like him, you make a good sparring partner.
@James Gryphon Haha :D I've got no room to argue with you on that one, we appear to have similar personality traits, but extremely different views of how things should be run (which isn't necessarily a bad thing I might add). I'd also like to add that, like sparring, there is no winning, only two-sided loss once one side decides to stop listening. Debates are only worthwhile if both parties respect each other, and thankfully, that seems to have been the case so far. :)
On a side note, thank you for adding the auto-finish options for user mentions
@James Gryphon for example. Really helpful with longer names, or names with weird characters.

;)
It doesn't hurt to bring different perspectives to things. I hope that we can all improve from this, and that people can get a better understanding of why the staff have done what we have.
I read your new post; there's a good chance I won't respond to it tonight (I'm starting to get fatigue, and/or a headache), but maybe I'll be up to it tomorrow.
I think it's important to keep cordial relations between people even when you're on different sides of a fight. There was a space MMO I used to play. In that game, I was with a faction (clan) that had two major enemies, one a 'xenophobic' faction that was at war with everybody, and another that was basically a direct competitor with ours (similar, mutually exclusive goals). We had a few shootouts with both groups. The thing that still sticks with me about that is how totally different the player relationships were. The Xeno players seemed like fun people. I had at least one good OOC conversation with one of their guys about our IC space battle, talking about our fight and how it worked out for both teams. With the other faction, it was a different story. They seemed to be jerks both IC and OOC, trying to stir up trouble against us with the server staff or get one over on us with every little thing. We built up a pretty strong dislike for those players. It made the rivalry more memorable, but I can't truthfully say it was more fun.

To be honest I don't remember doing anything... maybe it's a setting somewhere in the mod that I just had to flip and that's why I forgot about it, I don't know. I'm happy taking the credit for it, though. :) ;)
There seems to be drama brewing at every step and turn of the internet nowadays. I'm sad that it's wormed its way into even this community.
Disagreement and the potential ensuing drama is a part of life on Earth, I think. Even if you're in a community where you wouldn't think people would have anything to argue about, things have a way of turning up. Amish communities, which most people think of as being peaceful and uniform, are actually highly divided amongst themselves... and over what seem to outsiders like the silliest, most minor issues, like beard length or what types of buttons to use on their coats (or whether there should be buttons at all).
For what it's worth, I think such trouble's come to this community many times before. It just maybe hasn't been so obvious in some time.

Oh really? Being appreciated is awkward? Oh poor you, too much attention makes you feel insecure. Try being a pathetic little stick and tell me about feeling awkward in a society where physical appearance is all that really matters anymore to the shallow people of the world.

I would say hi and stick around to chat, but unfortunately I must get ready for bed here pretty quick. I was just hopping on with my tablet for a minute to catch up on stuff, since I haven't been on lately. (Trying to finish school, so I've been really stressed and moody lately. Thus, I've stayed away from the forum so you all don't have to see me like that, and I've been coping by playing Overwatch. Lots and lots of Overwatch.)
Oh, hey, and speaking of Overwatch, if anyone wants to play with me sometime, shoot me a PM and I can give you my battle.net ID. :)

I've never seen the show, but I've read the books and in my opinion, both of them are very different. The black and white morality, as opposed to GoT's more grey morality, is a big difference. Both of them do have their similarities, though.

Yeah, and I think everyone will agree with a thing, in both "realms" a lot of characters(our favourite ones most of the time) are killed xD This process kinda makes you care less about the characters so you can be prepared for something expected, but this is just my opinion 8)

Quote from: James Gryphon on July 01, 2016, 07:21:12 AM
It looks like I broke the entire forum before I left, by accidentally overwriting something in Core instead of Core2. ::) Really sorry about that, guys. I was under time pressure and didn't have time to look in and see whether anything was wrong before I left for several hours. I knew Experimental wasn't working, but I thought the Default was fine.
Sorry, that didn't exactly put me in the best mood, as I'm sure you can imagine. Now, how do I change back to regular old parchment?
I think Classic is now the default setting, so in theory nobody should have to switch from anything unless they want to use Experimental or the Castaways variant. But if it's set otherwise, it's an easy change in Profile > Look & Layout: go to Core Theme, then select "Classic" from the list of theme variants.
Edit: For some reason it wasn't default (maybe I got it confused with my own profile; who knows). Anyway, that's fixed now.
Thank you.

Hobbes vs. Tigger, who wins?
HOBBES
definitely Hobbes
Tigger of course!
*Squishes Del.* Hobbes!

THE RESULTS, ROSIE!
Have been tampered with. An admin prefers Hobbes, so Hobbes will win. ;D
I have never yet taken advantage of my status to alter the stats of a poll just to make a certain right side win.

My math book is making fun of Texas.
As Fred stared at each of those tacos he noticed that they were dripping with hot sauce. He told the nurse he didn't like a lot of chili pepper on his food since he was only six years old. She assured him there wasn't any chili pepper in the hot sauce... But a couple tablespoons of habanero pepper sauce-how could that hurt anyone? (Habanero sauce is the stuff that can almost melt glass.) Fred had taken a mighty, for him, bite of the first taco. He almost went into respiratory arrest... "The nurse," Fred Continued, "felt really bad about the hot sauce thing. She said no one in her house ever had such a reaction to habanero. She said that one of her daughters even puts habanero sauce on her cereal in the morning."
That was in a textbook?
Habaneros are nothing.
...
Is it weird to anyone else that if they knew James in real life he'd be, Mr. Gryphon to most kids.

I looked up Moderator earlier. One definition was a Presbyterian Minister presiding over an ecclesiastical body.
@James Gryphon, don't you go to a Presbyterian church?
No.
I thought I found out why you were on the staff, but no. You're Pentecostal.
moderator
[mod-uh-rey-ter]
noun
1.
a person or thing that moderates.
2.
a person who presides over a panel discussion on radio or television.
3.
a member of an online message board or electronic mailing list with privileges and responsibilities to approve or reject messages and uphold the terms of service.
4.
a presiding officer, as at a public forum, a legislative body, or an ecclesiastical body in the Presbyterian Church.
5.
Physics. a substance, as graphite or heavy water, used to slow neutrons to speeds at which they are more efficient in causing fission.
Clearly you don't use the New Oxford Dictionary of English.
Edit: Or this other dictionary I just used.
Main Entry: mod·er·a·tor
Pronunciation: primarystressmäd-schwa-secondarystressramacrt-schwar (I don't know what's with this.)
Function: noun
1 : one that moderates: as a : the leader of a Presbyterian governing body b : the chairperson of a town meeting c : the chairperson of a discussion group (as on television)
2 : a substance (as graphite) used for slowing down neutrons in a nuclear reactor
Well, obviously he's graphite.

I just made a really spicy marinade. It's one of the spiciest things I've tasted.
I had some, like, ghost pepper extract or something. I'm pretty sure it was a concentrate of some spicy pepper, and even a toothpick-ful was ridiculously hot.
I probably up 1 1/2 tablespoons of cayenne pepper and paprika.
@Kitsune Hey there!
Have ya'll ever tried Bacon Stuffed Roasted Jalapeno Poppers? They aren't the spiciest, but they have that nice burn and jalapeno flavor. With bacon. They are probably the best three thousand calories you'll ever eat. ;D ;)

Fried fish isn't very good. Cook salmon in the oven with sliced onions, sliced tomatoes, dill, and some honey mustard... you'll see why fish is so good.
The fish was Salmon, I'm not sure of what was on it besides lemons, I think, and some green stuff.

I wrote a post back on the old forum about the badger's sword from Mariel, Verminfate. I concluded that it was made from the same metal as Martin's sword.
It was part of a series I was writing, For Your Consideration, which was basically Game Theory for Redwall.

It constantly sprays water and essential oils in a steamlike mist.

It probably smells like whatever plant it was taken from. Lots of herbs are big sources for oils (mint....)

Middling, all things considered.
Ah. I've been thinking of starting a new Mafia once Galli's is done.
Get in line. ;)
I'd thought about doing one myself, but with 3+ people interested it doesn't look like a spot'll open up soon.
True. I'll have to think for a while about the setting, atm I'm leaning towards a Roman setting.
I guess technically there's no rule that says there can only be one at a time, but it feels more "right" to wait.
Do you never sleep James? :P I'd be surprised if college had already started for you... Even if it had, surely they can't be overworking you yet, right?
I sleep from the morning into the afternoon, usually.
The college thing... I should have started tomorrow. Because I waited too long to sign up, though, it's going to have to be pushed back a bit. :-\
Ah, I see. That's unfortunate.
I'm also trying to find something that used to be online; it looks like all the links for it have gone down, and contacting the people who made it isn't the easiest thing in the world.
Maybe they did not want it to be found. :P
Eh, doubtful; it was a set of rosters for a game that they spent hundreds of hours on.
Lots of homework needs to be done. Urgh.
Nothing like scouting Backyard Baseball players.
Backyard Baseball? That's what you were searching for at 4:00 am? ;D
Nah, two different things.
I've had BB '97 for probably a couple of years now. Terrific baseball game that showed me just how the game is played, and it's full of personality. Not many sports games can say that.
If I ever want to know how the sport of American football is played, I'll probably get the classic Backyard version of that too.

Hey
@James Gryphon, I checked a little while ago, and you can't see who posted anonymously on Recent Posts anymore. ;)
Well, you couldn't see anything at all. ;)
I've made some modifications, and I *think* I've fixed it. Put it through its paces, though.
? No, I wanted to see if it was Dannflor who started that 'Test' topic in Forum Games, so it was when I first got on. . . Maybe a quarter to 12?
The Anonymous posts are anonymous. . . . . Just like they were earlier. ::) Next time, remind me to screenshot.
Well, the difference is that earlier, I had changed the mod's default settings so that nobody was supposed to be able to see them, which I think more or less worked, but it didn't work at all when the setting to allow certain membergroups that to view anonymous posts was turned on.
Now, though, I've made changes to the mod's code, and the settings are set for certain groups to view who posted anonymously. So I think it really is fixed, but we'll find out soon enough.
(For the record, I posted that topic, as well as the first four or so replies, as myself and Tester.)
*Reads that about four times*
. . .
Okay, I think I got it. Mmkay.
But did you put in enough plutonium to get back to 1985?
Also, there's a new "Game Host" membergroup that players who wish to start anonymous games can post in. If you're in this group, you can see all anonymous posters' identities.
Unfortunately, that also crosses over to other games with anonymous posting, so you can't both host and participate in anonymous games simultaneously. Maybe at some point we'll be able to set it up so that viewing anonymous posts only applies to topics you started.
Galli is the first "Game Host".
Noice.

They're probably too strong; I'll tone those down some later.
What do you think of the larger bar-buttons?
I can't really tell the difference. But I'm on my phone, and don't know if that has any bearing on it.

First spoiler: The bigger title text just looks gross to me.
Second spoiler: The bigger, bolder lines are really distracting.
Not a fan.
The lines aren't actually bigger, just darker (something like #000 or #333 instead of #BBB, so a pretty hefty difference).
I take it most people don't have any problems with the menu options?
What new options?
There aren't any
new ones. They're just larger.
@Banya: Hi Bny. Why're you up at 3:19 RST?
*is summoned*
I got out of work at 3 and after working I always feel wound up. I was supposed to be out at 2 but spent another hour forcing intoxicated students of the restrooms and out of the building.
"I'm sorry your friend is too drunk to walk, but it's twenty minutes past close, so you guys are free to enter the women's restroom and carry her out." "That or a police officer can carry her out." "Yeah you have a good night too."
"You didn't even come close to getting that in the toilet did you even try."
"No you cannot simply walk through the building after close. You can walk around the building."
"'We close at 2' doesn't mean pack your stuff up at 2. It means pack your stuff up at 1:50 and vacate the building by 1:59."
and so it goes.
What're you up to at 5am?
I don't know yet; it's only 4:22!
I'm going through the CSS for the Experimental theme variant, trying to document the function of different code elements, as a precursor to doing more extensive work on it.
You ninja'd my DP. :(
Sweet. Some of that terminology escapes me, but I get the idea, I think. What changes are you going to make to it?
The avatar size is growing on me. I still think any larger would be too much, but I've gotten used to it now. It was just a big change. See what I did there. I had other points about the size change, but they're pretty irrelevant, so I discarded those thoughts. Fast or flashy gif avatars would drive me absolutely crazy, though.
As far as the code goes, I want to do some of Jukka's proposals, like changing the colors of the lines between and around posts. I'd also like to clear out any "flab", code that doesn't do anything, that might be stuck in there now (after all my revisions). There seem to be more than a few things that I can't figure out what, if anything, they do.
It bugs me that there's no kind of timeline for the release of SMF 2.1. It looks like 2.1 is going to necessitate basically me remaking the "Redwall look" here from scratch. If I knew when it was going to be here, I could decide whether it's worth investing a lot of time into revising this theme for use now, or if I should save my time and energy for making the theme for the new version. I guess I pick up more experience with CSS either way, so it isn't totally a waste of time, but I hate the idea that I might be making changes that won't affect us for that much longer.
I'm glad to hear that you're gaining a taste for the avatars. Although everybody else seemed to like it, I wasn't keen on going into something like this with your disapproval.
Double-posting is a sin!
I'd like to see what the lines look like in different colours. That's an interesting idea.
I didn't mean to sound so disapproving about the avatars. It's one of the less significant changes you've made in your improvements to the forum but one of the most visually striking. I'm learning that it's true that the older one gets the more one becomes resistant to change. :D (Whatever I'm so young.)
I read what you said in the avatar topic on giving my thoughts great consideration, and it really hit me. Thanks a lot for that.
It's become your hobby to look for improvements you can bring to the forum and to work on your experimental theme. I wager you're going to keep experimenting with the theme anyway. ;)
Oh, here's something. Maybe someone else brought it up and I completely missed it. @James Gryphon: This is bothering me. Why do you put so much stock in one person's opinion, when they're not even staff? If they were staff I could see it, but it seems really unprofessional (to me) to put so much in to one non-staff person's opinion? Even, or I could say
especially when they're in the very small minority? I mean, most of the time we aren't asking for the changes, so we could at least like them, y'know? I get that Banny's a very close friend and all, but this is kinda blowing my mind. It doesn't seem right to me.
Not tryna start anything or anything, I really want to know.
^I thought that as well.
I can see both sides. Banya is a good friend and a senior and respected member of the forum. It makes sense that James would pay attention to her opinion over someone like, say, Delthion, who's likely to advocate for avatars at 2000x2000.
On the other hand, however, this is really a cosmetic change, not a functional one, so a super-majority should take the cake, regardless of the opinions of any one or few non-staff members, because it is really about what people like and won't affect how things work.
Regardless, I wouldn't consider it an issue, because he ruled with the majority anyways.
I agree with Wylder.
Mm.

Well, not "colors", so much as different shades of onyx and ash. But yeah, I'm fiddling with things. In the Experimental theme, I'm making hopefully subtle changes to the lines, generally making them darker.

This is bothering me. Why do you put so much stock in one person's opinion, when they're not even staff?
Because I trust and respect her judgment.
Part of being "professional", as it was put, is knowing who to listen to. If you treat every customer's feedback equally, regardless of their qualifications or record, I don't feel you're on the pathway to success. When it comes to doing business, most customers are average people and earn your usual attention, but some, for good or bad, are exceptional. When you get somebody like that, it's important to treat them appropriately. If a person is malicious or deliberately ignorant (in a word: toxic) it's worth losing a sale to get those people out of your pipeline, because they'll cost you more than they're worth to you in the long run. Contrariwise, if they're especially affable and/or have a great mind for some aspect of your business, you want to do everything you can to hold on to them; they're worth more than just money, they save your time. I don't feel there are any toxic people on the forum, but if there is somebody who I feel is mature, level-headed, has good sense, and is also readily available and easy for me to get along with, I am inclined to take advantage of that when I can. I think it's obvious that Banya and Sky (two of the non-staff members I like to touch base with) demonstrate these qualities, so it doesn't make sense for me not to look out for their thoughts and feelings when I'm thinking about significant changes.
Quote from: Peony on October 21, 2016, 03:43:46 PM
I mean, most of the time we aren't asking for the changes, so we could at least like them, y'know?
If going by what I announced in "Tweaks and Changes" is any indication, most of the time, the changes haven't generally been things that somebody could readily disagree with, and when they
were, they were either discontinued not long afterwards (having failed their trial period), or I offered alternative options to people so that they could keep using the forum as they did before. It's no great secret that I've had my share of half-baked ideas and botched implementations of things, but I don't think I have a history of forcing everybody to go along with them indefinitely.
@Wylder: I have to admit I disagree with the point about cosmetic and functional changes being distinct in the forum's operation. As Apple has proved very well over the last quarter-century ;), look and feel is a key element of how a product is received by the public. There are definitely times when I feel it's appropriate to consider the vast majority's tastes, like when I held the poll to decide whether the Experimental theme should become the new default, but an issue like avatar size, that affects the entire forum regardless of user preferences, is something that we want to be able to look at from all sides and consider carefully, without feeling bound to make certain decisions.
It's great that you trust two members like that (not to say I don't) but just because they have good qualities doesn't mean they don't have bad ones. Banya and Sky aren't exactly active on the forum everyday, so they aren't getting a real sense of what it's like to be with the changes all the time. For example, a member who is on once a day would have a good sense of whether or not they liked the upsized bars, because they stare at it everyday. Other members wouldn't, because it's not a regular appearance. Another problem with this smol small opinion taking is that changing things naturally produces bugs (as we've seen in several cases). Personally, I think that it's not worth the backlash to change something based on one person's opinion, however small that change is. Lastly, with or without Banyer's opinion, you've been a little rash when making changes (i.e. - changing the host or whatever it was). But then again, there was a poll for that, so what can I say? ;)
I guess I'll add that when James makes changes for the entire forum, he's either asking the entire forum beforehand (like with the themes or .xyz) or trying something new with just his or the staff's opinions (like the avatar sizes and interface colours). He didn't ask me about the avatar size because he wanted to know if I wanted the size changed larger or smaller; he wanted to know if I liked the change in the hope that I would and was disappointed when I expressed a dissenting opinion. He hasn't once mentioned the possibility of changing the sizes back because of one lone opinion. When he wants to know in what directions the members want to see the forum go, he asks everyone, and when he wants feedback on the changes he makes, he listens to and weighs every opinion. You're directing this conversation on the assumption that James is listening to only one opinion and making changes based on it when that isn't what happened.
I used to be in James' "consultant" group for a little bit. Heh. Guess I got too weird.

@James Gryphon: With due respect, functionality is highly distinct from cosmetics. Changing the size of avatars- at least, so far as I can tell on my PC- does not materially affect the methods of posting or reading materials, introduce new operations or modify existing ones. It is almost purely a matter of taste; the only material factor I can think of is use of server memory. Functionality, on the other hand, makes a substantial difference in the operation of the forum, like the shoutbox- pleasing to many members, but at the same time damaging to other aspects of the forum. These can be weighed logically with a list of pro-cons. Aesthetics cannot be though of as logical tradeoffs, and so majorities should carry the decision, simply because there is no truly objective way of looking at it.
In any case, you make my point for me: "look and feel is a key element of how a product is received by the public"- public being the forum at large, and
not members in specific.
(As a note, I'm not criticising your decision- just discoursing on proper methods of decisionmaking. I agree with you in general)

I can't pay for my tuition for college because of techinical difficulties, and my teacher said they're trying to remove people who haven't payed tuition, so how am I responsible for not paying if their site won't let me pay! I swear, if I get kicked out of the class. . .
Hopefully I can get there in time to figure it out. . .
Hope it all works out Skarzs :-\
Skarzs, that sound frustrating. Is the college close enough to you that you can deliver a check in person? (That's how I paid my tuition at community.) If not, try another day or even another computer, one on a network that you can trust. Like, for example, my laptop's security settings are too high for some web pages or transactions, so I use my boss' computer when I'm stuck. Security's still good but not a stick-in-the-mud.
Though colleges say that students who haven't paid will get kicked out, my first (or third? it was fall, idk) semester my check ended up getting lost in the paperwork; I wondered why it had never been withdrawn but was never notified that I hadn't paid so I figured that it was taking a long time, and I ignored it, figuring I'd just say something later on when I really needed to balance my checkbook. I was never kicked out of class, thankfully, but I had to pay it the next semester on top of that semester's tuition and that hurt me inside.

Colleges, universities etc... are not terribly strict when it comes to paying your tuition late. Unless you paid your tuition super late they won't kick you out immediately. I've never actually heard of anyone getting dropped from their courses or a year because of late tuition payment. However with that being said I wouldn't recommend pushing your luck either. However the fact that you can't pay due to technical difficulties with their website shows why you probably shouldn't wait until the last minute. Better to try and do it a bit earlier precisely because of this reason...
Furthermore when it comes to say paying your phone, cable, internet etc... or credit card bill they are quite serious about paying on time. If you're even a day late it can have a serious negative impact on your credit record/history.

haha that is confusing; glad you figured that out in time. Wait, did you start college this fall?
Yeah, but just one class, since it's the only thing that'll actually get me where I plan on going. I don't need to study biology or trigonometry or any of those advanced college classes which rack up thousands of dollars of debt for stuff I won't use. Just one class: WELDING.
I believe you'd talked about starting college, but it slipped my mind. What you're doing is what my brother's doing, too. He's taking welding classes at the community college while working full-time in a shop, not as a temp worker but as a hire-in because of his experience. He hopes to become an apprentice. I don't know if he's going to take more basic classes and get his Associate's degree or not, he's only mentioned the possibility, but either way, I'm pretty excited for him; it must be reassuring to know where you're going and how to get there.

my portfolio introduction, swapping a few words around.
QuoteI believe first and foremost in honesty. If you're looking for a portfolio that's loaded with "great" essay cliches, or waxes eloquent about whichever topic the essay is on, I'm afraid you'll do better to look someplace else. All you will find here are the final copies on each essay, as final as they can get at this stage. If you as a reader aren't impressed, all I can say is that I'm sorry, and that I don't blame you. If this portfolio is to lead you to believe that I do have something to offer, it's better for that to come through blunt observation than through silver-tongued rhetoric. Even so, I hope you'll find this content enlightening and memorable.

My ePortfolio probably didn't go into a directory, but you might want to adapt my intro more loosely, all the same. I meant it to show off my personality and entertain y'all, not for you to copy it nearly word-for-word. ;) Make it your own.

Does your prof. use turnitin ?
Sounds familiar.
There are other sites that do that same thing as turnitin, comparing your writing to others to check for verbatim copying. Professors often give an allowance of up to 20% similarity for quotes and other small phrases, but they'd be less tolerant of a block of writing of that size, especially one not cited. Even if it isn't flagged as plagiarism, submitting that writing as your own will prevent James from ever being able to submit his to an online tracker, because then it'll be flagged as a ripoff of yours. It's a great introduction, but as James said, it's very him. His personality shines through it, and it doesn't sound like the way you do, Sage. It'd be good to model yours off of it, but you should make yours your own.

Working on some pretty major changes to the Experimental style. If anyone sees hiccups or problems with things, that's why. I'll take it down when I'm not working on it. When I'm done, I hope to backport it into the Classic and Castaways styles.
So, does anyone remember that secret project I mentioned? Well, it's finally done! The question is, though, do I make you guys wait to see the video of the making of it, or show it here first and not get to see the making of it for a while because I'm not done editing?
I was wondering when you were going to finish it and tell us all what it is.
NOT HELPING TOWARDS THAT END. If you want to find out, aid me in this decision!
What it really depends on is if you're going to put the name of the object in the title of the video. If you do, the surprise is ruined for us and you should post it on the forum before you finish editing the video. If you're going to have a fantastic reveal in the video, then wait and post/link the video on the forum, or let us know when it's up on your channel, so we can check it out. Then post pics on the forum.
. . . Obviously I'm going to title the video. But when you explain it that way (and with knowledge only a few people have), I'll post pictures of it. When I've gotten somewhere on the editing.
I'm glad. I've been curious. It'd better live up to the suspense. :P

I'm not going to kid around here, this is certainly not my best. Of course I have something to offer here, but it's not something you would stick up in the Sunday paper. My effort in compiling this portfolio was not exactly minimal, but I didn't do nearly as well as I could have. That being said, I'm confident that, with your criticism, I can continue to improve my writing throughout the second semester. Even though this content is not particularly valuable, I hope you find it "interesting" and memorable.

This makes my heart hurt. He's only eight, and he thinks his mother is legitimately kicking him out of the house! I can't believe how cruel that is!
Can we not. Please. For my sanity, can we not?
But you do agree it's appalling, right?
I didn't watch the video. . . . Because the election is over, and I'm sick of it.
@LT Sandpaw Hey did you ever get my PM?
@James Gryphon My final introduction (feedback appreciated)
Before you read this portfolio, I just wanted to say a few words. Over the course of writing each essay and then revising them for the portfolio, I realized that in order to be successful, I need to be humble. Much like Holden, I should recognize that I cannot do everything. Though my writing skills need improvement, I'm confident that, with your criticism, I can continue to improve my writing throughout the second semester. Though this content is not especially valuable, I hope you find it "interesting" and memorable.

Trump's said and done worse.
Um, not to a young child.
I'm sure some of the stuff Trump's done has killed children.
Obviously it's appalling, but from what you've said it sounds like it was just an empty threat (I didn't watch the video because all this Trump politics needs to end. It's over and done with, and it's time to move on) while awful parents actually do kick their kids out for stupid reasons all the time and I don't see why this case especially is worthy of attention.
*Sigh*
Bought a huge angle grinder.
*shrug* Yeah, thankfully it was just an empty threat this time. People have been disowning family members over this election for real, and I'm just really annoyed by people who think Trump is hateful when they're spreading hate themselves.

Trump is definitely not homophobic. (Is that what you meant, Jet, when you said that Trump's actions have killed kids? Wasn't sure.)
Sorry, I had to get that out of my system. I can't stand to have false information spread around.
Can't believe I dared to post that... O_O
Oh no, I meant Trump crushing businesses and forcing people out of their homes has probably killed kids.
Mm. But Mike Pence is his vp. Though at this point I'm willing to believe that Pence is Trump's life insurance. Sort of a "If you kill or impeach me, then you get him, and you like him even less than you like me" deal.
Maybe...

The rules say not to do it. That means it's wrong.
Wrong and evil aren't the same thing. ;) For example, there could be a law against giving food to the poor. I'm pretty sure most people could agree that, even if the law said it was wrong, it wouldn't be evil to do so.

I'm thinking about running a sci-fi country management/election forum game here. You'd compete as candidates in elections, and then make decisions to shape the country/your parties during the next term. Does this sound like something any of you would be interested in playing?
There are a bunch of things on my schedule I'd like to clear out before I commit to running this, but if it sounds appealing I'll start thinking about how to set it up.

I wonder if the Left and the Right went to war, if the Left would still consider giving trigger warnings a necessity...?
*Whispers* The original purpose of trigger warnings was to not trigger people's PTSD so, you know, they're a pretty useful thing.
Really, I didn't know that. To bad they've been blown way out of proportion, trigger warning legitimacy has been ruined by people taking offense at just about everything.
Indeed. People (without PTSD) just need to toughen up.
What is the reaction necessary for one to be considered 'triggered'? Does one have to be upset or angry? Can one be interested in starting a debate or discussion around the topic and still be considered 'triggered'? Can one comment unemotionally and still be considered 'triggered'? No really I want to know what each of you think of being 'triggered.'

I think that's part of the problem, there is no real definition for it, so people just throw it around willy-nilly. Actually its more of an insult to me, you'd call someone triggered when they react emotionally to something they don't like.

The purpose of triggers is to warn people of content they may not want to see/hear about (torture, for example).
Some people use them to describe being slightly offended by something.
Some people use them to belittle other people's viewpoints and emotions.
And some people use them as a social weapon!

How awful.
So that's along the lines of what I thought too. Being triggered (in today's sense) is being inflamed into giving an emotional response to something you personally find disagreeable, upsetting, or offensive. A calm response to something you disagree with is not 'being triggered.' Being triggered has a negative connotation and is associated with being sensitive, overemotional, and easily hurt, and is an effective (if below-the-belt) way to negate or belittle the opinions of someone who disagrees with you. As Jet said, trigger warnings "warn people of content they might not want to see/hear about." Like before watching a rather graphic video in lecture on modern-day slavery (both labour and sexual) a couple years ago, my professor informed the class that anyone who finds they can't handle the content is free to leave without being penalized for the absence, because that could trigger a violent response in students with a history of physical or sexual abuse. Thanks for the thoughts, guys.

Have they ever been to a mental health professional? Depending on how bad it is, there is probably an underlying condition or problem that needs to be addressed.
There's somebody in my school who hates the "My Name's Jeff" meme so much that simply saying the word "Jeff" will cause him to go absolutely ape and punch you in the nose.

To all artists and writers: If you have ever put a content warning on your work (e.g. blood/gore), you have used trigger warnings.

Warhammer started out as a RPG, and then became more of a tabletop wargame. The sci fi spinoff, Rogue Trader, was launched as a supplement to Warhammer Fantasy (RIP ;_;) and then became popular and thus became it's own tabletop game. There have been many video games about both Warhammers, and there have been hundreds of books about it.

I could've told you that.
I pulled it out of the fridge, and it turns out it wasn't fully hard boiled when I cracked it. So I put it in the microwave, and all was well. In a good way or bad way?
I plan for Modified to be basically the jumping-off point for future theme design. It's intended to be basically similar to Classic (which is based on the original RAF) with differences like the red instead of blue bars, different border colors, and of course the different backgrounds. When things are done, I intend to make Default and Castaways both derivatives of Modified (with Default having only one background, and Castaways being based on Modified's Castaways background).

Hang on. So does that mean that you're gonna give Castaways the old buttons?
Plz no.
Castaways already has the old buttons. The reason why you can't see them is because you're not using the same theme; you're using "Core" instead of "Core Theme". Core Theme is where all this stuff is happening; Core is the pre-button theme, with no planned future updates. I've renamed it to more clearly show this distinction.
All these choices you have created are making me shy away from trying them. :P
Not really; if I didn't create them, you couldn't very well try them either. ;)
It's not so complicated as it sounds. There's two themes, the pre-button unupdated one for Chipster (until the theme or his browser are debugged), and Core for everyone else.
In Core, there are basically four styles. When I'm done, they will be as follows:
Default: The theme everyone will get unless they choose otherwise
Modified: Features different backgrounds for different boards, and other select changes that I like; sorta seeing the forum through a gryphon's-eye view
Castaways: Modified's theme for "Other Works" applied to the entire forum
Classic: Designed to mimic the RAF extremely closely
Classic and Modified are in progress; when they're ready, I'll make an announcement. In the meantime they're usable as Experimental and Modified, respectively. The other two styles (Default and Castaways) will be left basically as-is until those two are ready for prime time; Modified will then be used as the template to make the new versions of Default and Castaways that match it.
Thanks.

Experimenting with the brick border in Modified; take a look and let me know what you think.
I like it so far, my only real gripe is that it stands out a bit too much.
Nitpick
I can see where one part of the brick texture begins and ends.
Would getting into a fight with one of my fellow classmates off school grounds still get me expelled?
Not if they don't find out...
;D
(I'm not actually going to fight someone. I'd take it to the principal before I'd even consider taking something to a physical level)
If it's serious enough, at that point I wouldn't care.
Made major changes to bricks and the background in Modified; let me know what y'all think.
I'm having some issue figuring that out. I changed all my theme things to Modified and it all shows up the same as what I usually see, which isn't with bricks.
it doesnt appear in the cellars for me, but its everywhere else
You can always try refreshing, if there's graphical glitches. Here's a couple of previews, though, for the index and Cellars.

The bricks are nice, but I've grown too attached to the background. Plus, on my phone and such it never looks good. The formatting goes askew along with the boxes.
I like it too, James, especially the first one.

The one for Default?
I don't know about it being blurry, but it is different from how it was. To make a long story short, there was a documented bug that made having a fixed background (like the old RAF, and the old Loamhedge themes) intolerably slow for some users. I could turn the fixed background off, but then it would be clearly messed up, from being badly tiled. So, I made tweaks to it so that it should be a repeating texture, with seamless edges.
I changed it a little while ago today, and was curious whether anybody would notice. Apparently you did.
Ah. I'll get used to it.
Well, I'm not married to that particular implementation of a seamless Loamhedge background; I'm willing to look at it again when I have the time and try to come up with something that looks better and more like how it was before.
Alternatively... I didn't spend a huge amount of time on this, and maybe one of y'all would like to take a shot at it and see if you can do it better than I did. If you do, here's the links to the background images (pre and post-change).

Good luck with that, mate. Hope you come to enjoy them as much as I. :)
Cool, Sierra! Good luck!
Thank you! I'm gonna hit the first one tonight :)
I'm almost done with "Redwall".
I know it's easy pickings at this point, but I gotta say it anyway: If I didn't like it the first time around (and by that I mean, I was ready to set it ablaze) it's all because of the Spanish translation. It was a very odd translation and it had a rather "unique" use of the language that never felt right for me... but I guess that at the time I thought that that was their way around it, considering how they had to pull some tricks in order to keep it faithful to the original. I was wrong.
Now that I have access to the author's true intentions, it has become super enjoyable all of the sudden (and hey, having to stop every eighth sentence to look up words isn't fun at all, but isn't the true purpose of literature to learn from it?). Still not my favorite book or anything -more like a flawed work at best-, but I do appreciate it in a whole new way.
The first Redwall book isn't my favorite either, but I'm glad you're enjoying it more than you did the first time. :)
Hey

Anyone see the Front Lawns or the Cellars in the Modified style recently?
I did. It is an interesting change though it might take a bit of getting used to.
What happened?
Unless I'm wrong, it's not like you people can't see it. ;) If you've switched theme styles and it doesn't show up, try refreshing.
To sum it up, though, some boards are sporting different-colored interfaces. I'll probably talk more about it in an announcement later.

Well, there was a good reason for it; we hadn't actually planned on doing a big board/theme change then, and I only changed it to appease you. ;)
I can say that whatever we do tomorrow will probably not entail changes to the theme. I've been doing a lot of that for real lately and don't have the time or inspiration to go all-out on a short-term difference. The ideas we have, however, don't look like they'll require that.

I'll have to go through it again when I have time but I'm a little confused.
Are these pre-made characters? Characters already set up for the RP?
What do you mean?
There was only one character I needed filled who I already figured out. Everyone else is custom-made by players.
I can't click on 'Modify Profile' in mobile. Do you have any idea how annoying that is? It's almost as annoying as someone using a font that blends perfectly into the background.
It doesn't blend perfectly. It DID take me a while of waiting for an image to load that wasn't there, but it's not impossible to read.
But he could be referring to "me" as himself, in which case he could say that he won. If I say "you", obviously he would win as well.

Depends. Are we trying to find clues to a crime/murder/disappearance/something else in the medieval Redwall setting? Because that I might like.
If the GM would direct people through PMs as to what clues their characters find that could probably work out well.
Yeah, I was thinking about something along those lines. Something along the lines of there being a huge storm outside and the Redwallers have retreated to Cavern Hole, and some crime happens that they need to solve.

Starting work on the Loamhedge forum that's intended to transfer over to the RAF when it's done. It'll involve some significant changes to the theme and other forum files, intended to make the forum easier to maintain and more mod-friendly going forward. I'm also hoping to log the changes I make so that it will be easier in the future, in case of SMF 2.1, for people to figure out what needs to get done to make the forum ready to upgrade.
Wait, why're you saying it like that?
What's the Loamhedge forum? I've heard it mentioned a few times in all my lurking
It's the temporary forum we all used for a little over a year while this forum went down. In some way or another the forum wasn't being supported anymore, but we all gathered on another forum that was designed like this one and called it Loamhedge. Now that this one's back up Loamhedge has been archived, but its history is still pretty recent and strong for active members.
Edit: Now James uses it for tests with background code so he doesn't mess anything up here. Oh, and the two forums were merged, so you won't find anything there you won't find in the history here.
Okay. Thanks!
It's also a backup, if need arise.
James did a lot of work for the community.
The shoutbox was a fun addition to the forum.
Maybe we should bring it back. ;)
Well, it was removed for a reason. :P I believe there are some discord servers as an alternative to it. :)
(Yes, I'm technically supposed to be gone, faded away, and retired, all simultaneously, but what can I say. A bird-lion's got to have at least half as many lives as a cat.)
Some of you asked about server trouble earlier today, which eventually culminated in all the PHP-related things on the site going down with an "Internal Server Error".
From what I can tell, this was the product of a major bug in the new version of SMF, 2.0.16. Some problem with the 2.0.16 RSS/XML news feed is said to, at least in certain cases, result in 'eating up CPU usage', which apparently manifested itself in the delightful error screens y'all were able to enjoy this evening in place of your regularly scheduled programming.
Fortunately, as you can see, the trouble's been worked through and the site seems to be in good order again. Thanks for y'all's patience during this difficult situation.
Thanks for the update, James!
Also, good to see you can still communicate after all this time of silence. ;D
On that note, I have (with some help from James) updated some of the forum security stuff, so we should see a decrease in spambots for a little while. :) (Feels odd announcing this on the Cellars but hey while we are on the topic I guess. :P)
Thanks for the updates and fixing the issue that quickly guys! :)

Made a long-overdue security tweak to the forum, setting it up to redirect all HTTP traffic to HTTPS. Then, in case you somehow nevertheless manage to get to an HTTP page anyway, there's a notice that allows you to switch to the secure version. I thought about phasing this change in more gradually, but since practically every page on the internet uses HTTPS nowadays, and only old browsers are generally incapable of accessing it, I figured that it would be unlikely to have an impact on any regular members. As always, if you notice any unusual problems, be sure to let us know about them.
He's like a benevolent ghost...
*Ahem* Thanks James!
Thanks, James. :)
Thanks, James!
Thanks, Charlie!
Lately, as a consultant for the staff, I have been working on a series of under-the-hood tweaks and changes to fix problems with the forum as it stands, to reduce both site and user trouble. Unfortunately, one of those changes involved killing off the Anonymous posting mod.
This decision wasn't made flippantly or unilaterally, but any decision that is made concerning a number of people, especially those who now use the forum much more frequently than I do, bears a reasonable explanation.
The forum had been generating millions of errors for months on end, mostly notices that such-and-such was deprecated in the current version of PHP. ('Deprecation' means that although the feature is supported now, it will be removed in a future version.) Although not apparently having an impact on the forum's performance, these millions of errors made an error log that could be many gigabytes large. This kind of constant writing is a Bad Thing, reducing the life span of solid state drives, and requiring mechanical hard disks to work all the time (also reducing their life span, albeit not in a statistically predictable way). You will see how this played into this decision shortly.
As mentioned, most of the forum's errors were deprecation notices, so I installed a mod that is supposed to improve PHP 7.2+ support, which apparently fixed all of the problems with the standard forum software. This meant that the only problems left were problems caused by old mods that hadn't been updated.
After making other adjustments, the only mod left that caused substantial problems with deprecation notices was the Post Anonymously In Topic mod; its creator Doug ("dougiefresh") used the deprecated "create_function" three times. Although my programming skills have advanced over the last few years, I freely admit that I couldn't begin to untangle or understand how those functions worked, so it was beyond me to fix them:
// Precompile our MySQL decisions into functions in $smcFunc:
$smcFunc['PAIT_id'] = create_function('$tbl = false', '
$tbl = !empty($tbl) ? $tbl . (!strpos($tbl, ".") ? "." : "") : "";
return "' . (empty($user_info['id']) ? '" . $tbl . "id_member' : ($see_mine ? 'IF(" . $tbl . "anonymous ' . ($see_all ? '> 0' : '= ' . ((int) $user_info['id'])) . ', " . $tbl . "anonymous, " . $tbl . "id_member)' : '" . $tbl . "id_member')) . '";
');
$smcFunc['PAIT_an'] = create_function('$tbl = false', '
$tbl = !empty($tbl) ? $tbl . (!strpos($tbl, ".") ? "." : "") : "";
return "' . (empty($user_info['id']) ? '0' : ($see_mine ? 'IF(" . $tbl . "anonymous ' . ($see_all ? '> 0' : '= ' . ((int) $user_info['id'])) . ', 1, 0)' : '0')) . '";
');

Not only can I not fix it, Doug hasn't been active in SMF modding for the last couple of years, and when he was last active, he was known for being stressed and overworked, so the chances are not good that he will be back to fix this mod anytime soon. If he isn't working on it, it is uncertain whether anyone else will, so the mod's future is doubtful.
If the mod was very popular and a key part of what the members were doing, it would be worth rolling the dice and waiting on it, perchance somebody did fix its problems. I did an investigation, however, and found out that since the mod was most recently installed (in 2017), there were less than 400 Anonymous posts. The majority of recent ones had been in the "Anonymousity" thread; the last time it was used for another important game was "Mafia: Lie or Die", almost two years ago. By any reasonable standard, 400 posts in 3 years is neither 'popular' or indicative of particular importance.
Meanwhile, in spite of being used for such a small number of posts (probably less than 0.1% of posts a day), the mod called its deprecated functions every time any page was loaded, writing multiple lines of text to the error log.
I didn't think about it months ago, but it dawned on me during this process that it is irresponsible, wasteful, and possibly actually immoral, to let the forum go on constantly writing this text to the disk - disks owned and operated by the server's hosting company. If it was for a legitimate purpose (doing things that really need to be written) or if the members were getting exceptional benefits from this mod in spite of its flaws, then perhaps it could be justified, but it cannot be justified for something that was hardly being used.
Based on the statistics, I know this change won't inconvenience most of you very much ;) , but I do apologize for the loss of a cool mod which should have had a lot of potential. I don't like to remove things without adding or changing something to compensate for it, so if you have suggestions for ways that things can be improved, whether by fixing something or adding it, we'd be happy to hear about it.
Thanks for reading.
Thanks for the heads up, James!

Spoiler
$tbl = !empty($tbl) ? $tbl . (!strpos($tbl, ".") ? "." : "") : "";
return "' . (empty($user_info['id']) ? '" . $tbl . "id_member' : ($see_mine ? 'IF(" . $tbl . "anonymous ' . ($see_all ? '> 0' : '= ' . ((int) $user_info['id'])) . ', " . $tbl . "anonymous, " . $tbl . "id_member)' : '" . $tbl . "id_member')) . '";
');
$smcFunc['PAIT_an'] = create_function('$tbl = false', '
$tbl = !empty($tbl) ? $tbl . (!strpos($tbl, ".") ? "." : "") : "";
return "' . (empty($user_info['id']) ? '0' : ($see_mine ? 'IF(" . $tbl . "anonymous ' . ($see_all ? '> 0' : '= ' . ((int) $user_info['id'])) . ', 1, 0)' : '0')) . '";
');
$smcFunc['PAIT_ts'] = create_function('$tbl = false', '
$tbl = !empty($tbl) ? $tbl . (!strpos($tbl, ".") ? "." : "") : "";
return "' . (empty($user_info['id']) ? '0' : ($see_mine ? 'IF(" . $tbl . "anonymous ' . ($see_all ? '> 0' : '= ' . ((int) $user_info['id'])) . ', 1, 0)' : '0')) . '";
');
