This topic is about those villains who ain't just in it for plunder. These guys is in it for the EVULZ! 'Cause they are PSYCHO!
Please list the villainous vermin, and then the reason you think he (or she!) is nutty.
First up: Gabool the Wild, full stop. "How do I hate thee? Let me count the ways!"
First of all, this guy cuts off the head of one of his best captains, for no legitimate reason other than the suspicion that he'd betray Gabool. (granted, a legitimate concern since Corsairs are a pack of thieving schemers. BUT that's why it's first on the list; and the point still stands!)
Secondly, Gabool steals a bell. That's the point; This dumb vermin steals A BELL! Forged, btw, by a Badger Lord who hates vermin. ??? For no other reason than to say "Hey, I stole a large, valuable, possibly cursed SHINY DING-DONG THINGY! COME TRY AND TAKE IT! PFFFFTHBBT!! NYAAAAA-NYAAAAA!! (raspberry and cat-call added) ;D
Third, Gabool throws the one beast who can build his belltower (a monument to self-importance that would make Caesar Caligula blush-look him up one of these days, you'll see where Brian got the inspiration for character) OUT A WINDOW! When torture could still possibly have broken Joseph into compliance.
GAAABOOOOOOLL!
(Bonus points to any Redwaller that caught that reference!)
Cluny, Slagar, or Tsarmina
Cluny, and White one, your post stretches my screen.
yes, please don't stretch the screen
I don't think he's quite Caligula level but he was indeed raving mad.
Queen Lantur from Marlfox was pretty crazy.

what does caligula mean?
Roman guy guessing by the name.
Cluny :)
Definetly gaboon :)
Well, lessee...
Silth was crazy. Crazy enough to be frightened half to death by a pretend ghost. It would have been interesting if Lantur had just left her to stew instead of poisoning her.
@White One: Gotta agree on Gabool. He was about the most insane Redwall villain. Remember the part where he thinks some other vermin is Graypatch? :-\
I'll think of more later.
Wait, remember in sable Quean? There's a hedgehog that's about as mad as gabool :P
You're thinking og Aggril. Not exactly a villain, and not exactly mad, but certainly possessive.
Idk he was crazy, he captured all the slaves after freeing them and then tried to make them build a house, and he was bad, toads served him
Ah, I meant Silth, not Lantur.
And Aggril appeared in Martin the Warrior. Triggut was the very, very insane hedgehog who kept the group of escaped youngsters as slaves on his little island in Sable Quean.
This person isn't a villain, but also doesn't play favorites with any character, good or bad. The squirrel Madd from Taggerung is a total nutcase....even more than some of these villains I think that have been mentioned. She didn't care who you were, what your business was, she fits the definition of "we're talkin' NUTS people!" ;)
Sawny Rath. What was his problem?

Madd? You mean maid?
No, Madd, she's from Taggerung.
oh... Okay.
For sure Gabool and Cluny! But don't forget Gulo!
Madd was the one with cloths made out of other creatures fur, she had issues :P and thanks, it was trig I was thinking of :)
Definetly Gabool and Slith they were pretty crazy o and at the end Tsarmina.
Cluny was kind of crazy in some parts, but he picked up at the end.
What's that squirrels name in Mariel's book?. . .Patakugg. He is a crazy old fool. He almost starved Mariel, and Gabool is a nuthead too.
I agree with MatthiasMan about Pakatugg and Gabool.
Gulo too. He eats his enemies! I don't think you can get much crazier than that. But then towards the end he murders one of his 8 remaining creatures and starts telling inanimate objects, "Tell him that I am coming!" and things like that.

Correct, Dannflor! Caesar Caligula was a Roman Emperor whose madness is now a byword for violent insanity. He once elected his prize horse (seriously, look it up) to the Senate, because he thought the rest of the Senate was going to turn against him.
But back to topic.

I am more than willing to do that having gone through all sorts of English, writing, college classes where you have to write endless paragraphs. I gave as much as I could for my answer...Madd wasn't a major character in the story, but certainly fits the description.
I would suspect a majority of our members here are not versed in writing very lengthy paragraphs about one thing, simply due to age and experience. Give them time. :) I know you want more, but it'll take time.
I like to write, but I have trouble making lengthy paragraphs. I run out of ideas. Any suggestions?

Hahaha! Yes, thank you, Lutra. I'd quite forgotten how young some of our compatriots are. Some of them write so well for their ages, though! It's easy to forget some times that most of these guys are ten or even fifteen years younger than I.
I'm older than 13
Redwallfan7: Sometimes it can helpful to outline a post if you want to expand on your idea. Say I wanted to talk about why Gabool is the most insane. I could outline my post thus:
Gabool: Most Insane Villain
Reasons-
1) He was speaking with inanimate objects (the Bell)
2) He was seeing ghosts and calling creatures by the wrong name, thought that one rat was one of his dead captains or Greypatch.
3) His went days without sleep, which will make even the sanest person start to break down.
Etc. It helps me to organize thoughts and think of new things to say. Also, I like to read Wikipedia articles about subjects to help give me a more rounded understanding of the topic I'm discussing (in this case, insanity). Wikipedia isn't always 100% correct, but it is a good resource to learn basic information about lots of different things.
Yay! that is who I said.
Yeah, to kill Gabool would have been to put him out of his misery. He was constantly thinking that the bell, or Rawnblade, or Mariel, or one of his captains was out to get him. (He was kind of right.)
Quote from: Tiria Wildlough on July 22, 2012, 07:03:29 AM

Well, justified paranoia is still
paranoia. ;D
I'm not disputing that. ;)
Cluny wasn't that crazy...
Slagar was crazy. Wearing a mask that he never took off, and selling slaves to a wearat kingdom. Pretty crazed in my book.

Well, he did have a purpose for the mask. It hid his horrible injuries.
Gabool is over all the craziest I've ever read about. I mean his eyes were completely bloodshot, and he thought he heard a bong from the bell. He nuts. I mean really, a bell haunting someone? He has some major mental issues.
slagar or cluny.
Gabool's definitely tops, but Cluny was going wacko towards the end of his life.
Gabool was probably the craziest of them all but there was also Gulo, Queen Silth, and Tsarmina.
I put Gulo before, but Gabool is wacko. He starts hallucinating after a long time of no sleep. He thinks Mariel tried to kill him and throws her off a cliff. And he set up a trap involving a hidden room and a scorpion.
Gulo was savage and only started to get insane near the end of the book. So my first choice would be Gabool. Also would Major Cuthbert Blanedale Frunk count as being insane?
Well, Cuthbert was a hare and one of the hares of Salamandastron, so he's not really a villian.

i put slagar or cluny before but now you mention this i agree gabool is the craziest.
Looking back across the years of Redwall reading that I have done, Gabool is still Brian's most "fleshed-out" villain. He has the best characterization.
I'd put Vilu Daskar on this list, but he wasn't really insane. He was just E-V-I-L.
Gabool and Gulo.

I'll think of more later.
Silth was crazy, Lantur was crazy (After taking the throne), *Sigh* Mokkan (My favorite villain :() went power mad after taking the throne, Gabool was crazy (I mean, he talks to a stinkin' bell, and when it doesn't answer him, he cries with rage and kicks it. Can't get much more insane than that), Gulo was crazy, Badrang went a little insane, Clogg just never was sane, Yah.
Most of them went mad. Even Cluny!!!
No Spoilers please, but Korvus Skurr looks pretty mad to me where I am.
I'm at the very start of Chapter 27 where Dubble jumps down from the tree to grab Zaran's sword and a mysterious beast jumps on him.
Tsarmina, sertinly!!!
Tsarmina was always crazy to me
Yeah, Tsarmina was pretty crazy.
I say Gulo the Savage, he was so stark raving mad and after his brother and the amazing walking stone, also known as the only turtle in Redwall history, sort of like the Beaver in the First Book, he threw his men right into the Ravens Den and the rapids, not knowing when to stop and listen to reason, his mind was obviously in deep trauma, I figure another reason why he is crazy is cannablism, its not normal at least not in this World for creatures to eat other creatures that can walk, talk, etc, All that meat probably got to his mind.
Baliss went nuts.
Well, having several hedgehog spines in your head would probably make you go cray :P
crayfish!
What?
In your post you said 'things that make you go cray', so I said "Crayfish!"
Martin the Wild! ;D
Sorry, I meant Gabool the Wild.
Haha Martin the Wild....that's a good one!!!
Well, there's also Gabool the Warrior, if you believe in him. ;D
Errr, I think that Tam was finding it funny that you called his sister wild...
*Facepalm*
Oh, yeah...
That makes sense.
Lol I was just saying it sounded interesting...Martin the Wild! And I have read about Gabool the Wild ;)
I would say Gabool is craziest.
I'm not sure about the craziest villain, but many of the Abbey dwellers are nuts! They think a long-dead mouse watches and talks to them from a tapestry hanging on the wall. ;)
You weren't serious, right? 'Cause he does talk to them and visit them in their dreams! :o
Tsarmina was nutty... so was Cluney, big time.
I still think Gulo was really Crazy!
I agree!
I think Slagar was one of the most insane. He twisted the facts into unrecognizable shapes, and believed that they were true. It's like if you took a stick of celery, ran it through the garbage disposal, and mixed it with a glob of peanut butter, then gave it to your friend and said, "This is a whole, undamaged celery stick. Ain't it pretty?" (I'm not saying he's not still cunning and such, but he's pretty delusional.)

Umm... Rom, you're not a villain, but I think you might be a little insane...
Personally, I think it's a threeway tie between Slagar, Cluny, and Gabool.
Slagar, as somebody said before, was clever but delusional. Mostly delusional.
Cluny was also a mastermind to begin with, but he mentally deteriorated over the course of the book. And towards the end I think he became schizophrenic. (Redwall page 327: "The voices had told him he would never again see the warrior after the sun set upon this day.")
Gabool, judging by White One's reasoning on the first page, was definitely and undeniably insane. It's been too long since I read Mariel of Redwall to give much real evidence myself, but I do remember parts such as Gabool throwing his one and only possible maker of the bell he so desired out the window.
But these are just opinions. I think a lot of Redwall villains were never straight in the head.
Edit: *belltower, sorry. I told you my Mariel of Redwall facts are rusty.

A trilogy? What three books? Where did you get that from?
At first there were supposed to be only three books... Redwall, Mossflower, and Mattimeo.
We're only counting main villains, right? I think it's easier to ask which villain was the most sane! Just about all of them went bonkers by the end. I suppose the term insanity has to be well-defined because it can mean so many things. I'd have to make a list to really give an answer.
Insane:
Cluny- Spent most of the book hallucinating
Tsarmina- Spent most of the book hallucinating and became obsessed with killing Gingivere
Slagar- Went insane due to Asmodeus's poison and believed his own story that the Redwallers sent him and Sela to their deaths
Gabool- Hallucinated and started talking to the Joseph Bell
Clogg- Badrang gave him a nasty crack on the head, after which he spent his last scenes talking to corpses
Ublaz- Open to interpretation, but I believe he was so confident in his ability to frighten he really did believe he had a magic ability
Mokkan- Went mad with power, Lantur and Silth were pretty out there as well
Raga Bol- Became obsessed with escaping Lonna
Gulo- Ate other creatures live and became obsessed with killing Askor
Kaltag- I wasn't sure whether to include her as a main villain, but her son's death cut her ties to reality
Vizka Longtooth- I'm a bit fuzzy on him, but it sounds like he was killing his crew for no reason at the end
Sane:
Ferahgo- I can't remember him doing anything particularly out there
Badrang- He never seemed to panic until Martin reappeared, a fairly rational fear in my opinion
Swartt- Same as Ferahgo
Urgan Nagru- Same as Ferahgo
Damug Warfang- Same as Ferahgo
Vilu Daskar- I do remember him being sane to end, his defeat was in believing Luke's treasure story
Ungatt Trunn- Brocktree's visions shook him, but he was lucid enough that it never affected his cunning
Kurda- Her fault was in not being as good a swordfighter as she thought she was, she never fought someone that would fight back
Riggu Felis- Same as Ferahgo
Korvus Skurr- He wasn't so much insane as he was stupid and open to suggestion
Vilaya- She was always fairly cunning
Zwilt- He was pretty grounded in reality
Razzid Wearat- He was unintelligent, but not stupid like Korvus
Overall, after taking a look at the villains I'm going to have to revise my thoughts on Redwall villains. I guess my view of insanity led to the villains being split just about down the middle. I'm obviously a bit shaky on some villains, but it looks like Redwall villains aren't just insane. They have character flaws that the heroes can exploit. My vote for craziest villain has to go to Slagar. Tsarmina's a close second.
Hehehe, Ungatt was a pretty cool guy, right, TW? ;D
I agree. He's definitely up there among my favorites with Slagar, Tsarmina, and Clogg.

Those are some of mine also. Along with Gulo....
ya
Gulo. He kills more of his hoard than his enemies do.
Gabool is much more insane than Gulo.
I haven't read his book in a while. Was he in Bellmaker or Mariel?
Mariel.
Thanks!

I agree that Gabool is the most insane...
He talks to bells. XD
I talk to myself and say; "Why didn't I think of that?" ;D ;D
Clunky or Silth. But Gabool was insane as well!
Hmm. I think Gabool was most insane myself. He tried to kill a bell with a sword, for heavens sake.
By the way, welcome to the forum Marthimeo (cool name, too!). If you want, you can introduce yourself in the Introduction Topic in the Front Lawns.
Gabool.
Me, I am not insane
I just having my way hehehahaheeheehoho...
what?
Fabiola was insane but he was a good strategist and he was a searat king you must be smart and or just very good at fighting to rise to such a high position.
Who?
wow gabool and then cluny and then tsarmina or maybe reverse
Gulo the savage!
Gulo wasn't crazy like every second, but after Gabool got the bell, he couldn't think straight for any amount of time.
Gabool the Wild went literally insane. I know a few others did but not as much as Gabool. The only one who came close to being as insane as Gabool was Baliss.
Baliss wasn't really insane, though. Just delirious. He still had enough presence of mind, but he had to treat his wounds in order to stay conscious of his surroundings.
Gabool was pretty insane for sure. And there was that one squirrel in Rakkety Tam, as well.
