Title: First Person Shooters
Post by: Hickory on July 29, 2015, 04:33:53 PM
I decided to make a thread dedicated to FPS.

I don't want any arguing over the "best" FOS, they are all equal and this is a discussion thread.

I'll include a few quotes from each franchise, please don't say stuff like "Really? You picked that quote?"

Halo

"Don't make a girl a promise, if you know you can't keep it."

-Cortana

"Sir, permission to leave the station."
"For what purpose?"
"To give the Covenant back their bomb."
-Master Chief and Lord Hood

Call of Duty

"Right...what the hell kind of name is "Soap", eh? How'd a muppet like you pass selection?"
— Captain Price's first words to John "Soap" MacTavish.

"Good news first, the world's in great shape. We've got a civil war in Russia, government loyalists against ultranationalists rebels, and 15,000 nukes at stake."
–Gaz

Portal

"Momentum, a function of mass and velocity, is conserved between portals. In layman's terms, speedy thing goes in, speedy thing comes out."
-GLaDOS

Crysis

"This isn't a war ordinary humans can win! This is the future - death's an inconvenience now, nothing more. We are all dead man walking."
–Jacob Hargreave

I know that I didn't get near all the popular games, but it's a start. Feel free to post more quotes and facts, whatever. Just no third person stuff, sorry. The Last of Us does not belong here.

I don't play many first person shooters, but I am so dadgum excited for the new Star Wars Battlefront. I mean, who wouldn't like to battle and fly on Hoth?

So true. I'm saving up for an Xbox.

Wait, wait. Playstation 4, I meant. Although I could play Halo on Xbox... but there's also Battlefield for PS.

Halo 2

"Well whadya know. . . For a rock, he flew pretty good!" ~Sgt. Johnson.

"Wort wort wort!" ~The Elites.

Fact about the Elites' "wort wort wort" from the games; it was originally the audio of Sgt. Johnson saying "Go go go!" played backwards.

I wouldn't call Portal an FPS, it's a puzzle game.

"Please note that we have added a consequence for failure. Any contact with the chamber floor will result in an unsatisfactory mark on your official testing record, followed by death." ~ GlaDOS

Some of Sgt. Johnson's best quotes are in Halo 2.

"When I was in the regiment, we didn't have any fancy schmancy tanks! We had stick! Two sticks, and a rock! And we had to share to rock!"

"Thanks for the tank. He never het's me anything."

"Oh, I know what the ladies like."

But this is my favorite.

"It just says, 'Regret, Regret, Regret.' Catchy. I wonder what it means?"

"Dear Humanity: We regret coming to Earth. We regret being alien [dogs]. We regret that the corp just blew up our raggedy-[butt] fleet! OORAH!"

Whenever he says stuff like that, I just go, "Awwww yeah. Go Sgt. Johnson."

"I believe that one person can make... or break... a nation." ~ The Courier, Fallout: New Vegas - Lonesome Road

I love New Vegas so much, it's one of my favourite games. I recently started my "murder literally everything that breathes" playthrough, and it has been ridiculously fun so far (especially since the oblivious Bethesda AI has led to multiple NPCs sitting or sleeping inside the corpses of their murdered peers).

"I am the Voice of the Covenant!"
"And so you must be silenced."
- Halo 3

I like the Elites. Pretty cool. (check out my profile pic)

I hate to be a nerd, but by Halo 3 he had left the Covenant and changed his surname to Vadam, to symbolize his departure.

It's really fun, you can kill people with various medieval weapons in gory ways.

How gory? And what time periods? What wars? Or is it just set in the medieval technological time-period and not actually historically medieval?

Anyone else played any of the Borderlands games?  I own both the first and second games, although I've only ever played the second, as my brother and his friend didn't want to play the first (it's a co-op game, so we were all playing it together).

Quote from: Claptrap, Borderlands 2Man, this is great!  Now that I've met a mighty Vault Hunter, I can finally join the resistance in Sanctuary, take vengeance against Jack for killing my product line, and repair my central processor so I can stop thinking out loud!  I wonder what it's like to have a belly button.

Quote from: Dr. Zed's Meds (medical vending machine), Borderlands 2Next time you're bleedin' to death, just think, 'Dr. Zed!'

  Did I mention I don't have a medical license?

Who needs a medical license when you've got style?

I'm legally obligated to tell you that I ain't a real doctor.

Quote from: Sir Hammerlock, Borderlands 2Spectacular -- first Captain Flynt's bandits attack, then Claptrap shows up!  I must have been horrifyingly cruel to puppies in a previous life to deserve this kind of treatment.

When Claptrap speaks, I feel my brain cells committing suicide one by one.

Borderlands 2 is awesome.  I seriously need to finish that game.

Of course I play Fallout 4! The game is so friggin' awesome. I like Dogmeat as my companion though. He doesn't mind of I just blow people's heads off instead of clearing bugs out for them.

I'm considering Brotherhood of Steel, but at the moment I am hooked with the Minutemen.

BOS gives you T-60 power armor, you can fly around.... I sided with them. But the Minutemen are ok.

So Gonff, how is Fallout 4? I wasn't really interested until I read this thread. Would you be willing to list the pros and cons?
Title: Re: First Person Shooters
Post by: Gonff the Mousethief on January 15, 2016, 06:28:47 AM
@Sage: I'll inform Danse!

@Del: Oh, it's great. Here is the list:

Pros:

Overall story is interesting

Graphics seem very nice

World is full of stuff

Weapon and Settlement creation alone are amazing

It can really keep you engaged for hours

Cons:

Some people have reported glitches and bugs

CPUs and conversation seem to be lacking

Doesn't give clear instructions on how to use major functions in the game

You could feel overloaded with the amount of missions

Story gets bland in a few areas

So yeah, major pros, little cons. I could say it's like Skyrim with guns, but that would be an understatement.

Disclaimer: I have not played Fallout 4, my information comes secondhand.

It's a Bethesda game, so it's really buggy on launch but has a massive world. The biggest complaints I've heard about it are that, one, it has very poor inventory management (there's a mod to fix it) and that it drops the classic Fallout roleplaying mechanics and chat options in favor of more basic communication and more of an FPS play style. If you like Fallout, you should probably buy it. If you don't, you should read reviews and watch gameplay videos.

@Ashenwyte: Vermintide looks cool, if a little more gory than I'm comfortable with. Not really sure it counts as an FPS, though, with its focus on melee.

@Gonff, sounds great! But how is the language/gore/suggestive themes. I have never read the ratings Fallout 4 so I have no idea if any of these listed even exist! ;D

Never mind...Xbox One. I didn't know much about the game except what was mentioned on here. ;D

FO4 is rated M for mature... Here we go, the ESRB rating. "Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Strong Language, Use of Drugs "

It plays like an FPS, so I'll classify it as such. There is probably a setting to reduce the gore, but it's part of the experience. (Keep in mind that I haven't played the game yet)
