Question: Favorite Reptile?
Option 1: Snakes
Option 2: Monitors
Title: Favorite "Other" Species
Post by: Ashleg on October 10, 2017, 12:06:25 AM
We have topics for your favorite vermin and Woodlander species, but how about those that do not fall under a bracket? Birds, snakes, lizards, frogs, seals, bats, whales, fish, an' all that.

My favorite "non-bracketed" species to read about would have to be the frogs, specifically the frogs in tribes. As a frog lover, they're cool, and I like how they are portrayed as this horrendous kind of swamp cult the characters must get away from.

I like the adders. I also liked the golden hamster that showed up briefly in one of the books.

The adders are my favorite. They're kind of a force of nature.

Seals. They were the very species I wondered about possibly existing in the books when I first read through them, and was quite happy to have an appearance. Probably not practical for a real, serious plot role, but nonetheless fun to have.

I forget--were there narwhals in the books?

Not if we're talking about Redwall.

No, but I think there was a dolphin.

I don't remember a dolphin.

Porpoises?

I think there were dolphins yes. They had a grand ol time trolling the seagoing vermin in The Rogue Crew.

So where did these alleged dolphins come into play?

As far as I can remember, there was only ever Kweekum and his crowd, in the Legend of Luke.
I cannot even remember what his speech attributes were, if he ever spoke at all.

Yeah, the LoL. They helped push that craft to give the seal a rest.

Definitely bats. Not only are bats my favourite real-life animals, but the ones we see in Redwall are just so cute and nice. I wish they'd shown up more, shown up more.

As for evil critters, the use of adders and other snakes as the Redwall world's equivalent to dragons was pretty cool and clever.

They pulled the raft to meet the red ship in The Legend of Luke

I would say frogs/toads because they are my favorite animals in real life, but in the books they are bad guys and seem hideous lol. So I'll have to go with bees! The beefolk are hard workers and provide the Redwall creatures with honey to make all kinds of desserts.

The bees are slaves...
Yeah froggies are always fun. I liked the solitary beaver and hamster too.

I think Monitors were pretty cool. (Too bad they only made an appearance in only one book... Oh well)

Not necessarily, the Redwallers aren't forcing them to do anything and they can leave whenever they want.

The shrews could apparently talk to the bees in one of the books, so I'm guessing that the bees are smart enough that they probably aren't being kept in the abbey against their will.

Are they being payed for their work?
Vermin slavemasters could talk to their slaves, couldn't they? Still slaves...
(Please note I'm not really being serious here...)

Sure are!  Redwallers like flowers and plant gardens, giving the bees a handy food source.

Though honestly, besides growing flowers and providing nice safe nest boxes for them to build their hives in, I'm not sure how one would "pay" bees.

An argument could be made that food and shelter (however poor) is given to slaves XD

Like I said I don't *think* it's slavery (even if I did say that)- since bees aren't *as* sentient as the mammals of Redwall. It's kind of like keeping cows for their milk.

Title: Re: Favorite "Other" Species

I dont- and I doubt Redwallers would kill bees for food. Like... who eats bees?
Title: Re: Favorite "Other" Species

Hedgehogs.
Title: Re: Favorite "Other" Species

Fair enough- but I suppose you have to dispose of dead bees somehow. Eating the working ones hardly seems productive (and will result in bee stings)
Title: Re: Favorite "Other" Species

There were a couple characters, at least one hedgehog, that ate insects, like wasps. He may not have liked bees, if my memory serves me right. But I think it would make sense for them to be smart enough not to eat bees that were still alive and useful.

No, he said he liked bees best. (or something along those lines, anyway) A meal of wasps was almost as good as a meal of bees.

My favourite of the 'other' species would have to be birds. Chib, Rulango and Skarlath (ESPECIALLY Skarlath!) are all great examples of the awesomeness of the winged ones. Second would be bats.
