Title: Video Games
Post by: Gonff the Mousethief on February 24, 2016, 04:27:21 AM
I know a few of you here play video games. What is your favorite genre? What are you playing right now?

I myself just beat Shadow of Mordor, and it is either my second or third favorite game behind Ocarina of Time. Right now I am playing Fallout 4, Dark Souls 2, Desiny the Taken King, and Battlefront, along with a few others. And I gotta say, Dark Souls is not for the faint of heart I tell you. I have put a couple hours in and have died at least 100 times.

Hmm, 7 days to die, Deus ex Human Revolution, Skyrim, Fallout 3 (don't have 4), and Tomb raider 2013.

My favorite types are Strategy Games (I think that's what it's called) like Age of Empires.
Currently I am playing Empire Earth, which is similar to Age of Empires.

My favorite games lately have been Animal Jam and Feral-Heart. They're both really fun animal roleplay games for the computer.  ;D

Bioshock: Infinite is my favourite.  Though I prefer watching the games as my brother plays them over playing them myself.  He's a much better gamer, and I like the games with a good story and good visuals; I don't care for the challenge myself.

I haven't played Bioshock: Infinite in a while. I've never actually played 1 or 2. Need to rectify that.

Halo is definitely one of my favorites. Especially Halo 3. Bunjee really did a good job on those games. Tomb Raider (the newest one) is also a good one, though I haven't finished it. Fallout 4 is fun too, though I've not played much of it.

A member after my own heart.  *Clutches chest*  (DA:I and Skyrim just happen to be two of my favourite games of all time.  ;D)

Who's your Inquisitor?  Who did you romance?  Did you choose the templars or the mages?  Have you played any of the DLCs?  (Sorry, I just don't get to talk to a lot of people who've played a Dragon Age game before.  :P)

If you ever get an inkling to take screenshots of your characters, please send them my way so that I can fangirl over them and probably doodle them.  ;D  And as this is a video game topic and you have no way to stop me, I shall share about some of my Inquisitors:

Kestrel Lavellan: (http://i1352.photobucket.com/albums/q656/MoonfishParachutist/f06d3bd2-6b5e-4c51-9cb0-f80da50c4af4_zpsj3kbynyv.png)  My "first" (technically second, but I didn't like my first so I got rid of her) Inquisitor and the only one I've completely beaten the game (and Trespasser DLC) with.  She's a mage who lost her memory when she got the mark and is genuinely very confused with everything going on around her.  She romanced Solas, though.  (My sweet, sweet egg who's actually pretty annoying now that I think about it.)

Kenira Adaar: (http://i1352.photobucket.com/albums/q656/MoonfishParachutist/def1cd34-6f66-42a2-b77b-6b6a17429ba5_zpsrieredei.png)  A dual-wielding rogue who's actually fairly sweet for being a towering, terrifying person.  She believes the best about everyone and is currently dating Iron Bull.  (I don't like his romance as much as Solas'...)

Anya Lavellan: (http://i1352.photobucket.com/albums/q656/MoonfishParachutist/a4e21c37-153c-4e81-9b50-b4e186739cc9_zps31bfxuoy.jpg)  One of my other rogues, this time an archer who really, really hates her clan and wants to go see the world, but not in the way the Inquisition has her seeing it.  She just wants to get this whole mess over with so she can go adventuring (and visit every tavern along the way).  She also kinda really likes Blackwall because he's a challenge (and his beard is really cool).

Silas "Si" Lavellan: (http://i1352.photobucket.com/albums/q656/MoonfishParachutist/96497b71-da1a-4ee3-ac8c-7f86408818b9_zpsvx1efwk0.png)  My second favourite Inquisitor after Kestrel, Si's a dual-wielding rogue (I really like rogues, okay?) who is just happy to be apart from his clan, who he finds no kinship with as he believes in the Maker and not the elven gods.  (Hence his lack of vallaslin.)  He has a major crush on Josephine.

  ...I really like making Inquisitors.

Quote from: Inquisitor on March 11, 2016, 03:49:57 AM
2. no romances, yet

;A;  Do you have any idea who you might want to romance?

Quote from: Inquisitor on March 11, 2016, 03:49:57 AM
3. both, but i chose templars first

Mm, yeah, my brother and I played the game at the same time, so we agreed that he'd go with the mages and I'd go with the templars and we'd see who was better.  While I really liked the templar quest (because Cole is amazing), now that I know more of the lore of the franchise, I pretty much go with the mages every time.  :P

Quote from: Inquisitor on March 11, 2016, 03:49:57 AM
4. fraid i havent played any dlcs

Well, if you ever decide you wanna get one, go with Trespasser.  It's the official ending to the game (kinda annoying that they made you pay extra to see the end...), and it's really good.  Make sure you're high level when you do it, though; I was level twenty-something and I still really struggled with it.

Oh, okay, I won't spoil too much.  (Cullen is the real villain, Dorian is secretly plotting to steal your power and use it to rise above the other magisters in Tevinter, and the dragons are actually quite friendly if you feed them elves.)

A Female elven archer, since I'm horrible at naming things she just has the default name.  Not romancing anyone, sided with the templars.  I've played through both of the pre-endgame DLCs, I'm trying to complete everyone's personal quests before I finish the main game, so no Tresspasser yet.  I don't have any screenshots right now, but I can probably take some if you want.

On a different note, it's Bard's first birthday today!  Chiming Noises!

Why you gotta side with the templars?  D:  (Sorry, I'm just very anti-templars.  If they were less of a corrupt organization and actually protected the mages instead of making their lives pure torture, maybe I'd sorta like them, but as it stands, the templars kinda suck in my opinion.  :P)

As the institution stands right now they're pretty corrupt, but if the templars sympathized more with the mages, accepted them as people and actually did their job properly I think having them around is better than not.  They just need a reform and a good vetting process for recruits.

Ooooookkkk.

So, recently I got Final Fantasy XV, which has turned out to be an amazing game. It looks great, play great, and the story is so rich I just love it. And I've never played a Final Fantasy game before, so this gives me hope for future titles. Anyway, so I way playing this once boss fight, and I swear it was the most mixed emotions thing I have ever played. If you don't plan on playing it, then read the spoiler, but if you do, I advise you to not unless you have gotten past Chapter 9

Spoiler
So you have to face this leviathan type creature right? Well, to awaken it this girl who you were supposed to marry goes and summons it so you can take it down and get its blessing. But when she goes to summon it, this guy who has been following you around the whole game straight up STABS HER and leaves her to die as you are fighting this thing. And before all of this you come flying in on this rocket and feel so cool, but NOPE. Go ahead and kill one of my favorite characters, THEN have her give me ultimate power to kill this thing while she nopes out. SO yeah, then once you kill the monster, she find her and you fall into this dream to when you two were young and she was captured by the enemy, and it is such a touching scene, but then she says she has to go away again, and this whole valley pops up and you can't reach her and OH ITS SO HORRIBLE. Then you wake up and find one of your three friends blinded, one hates you, and even later that the guy who stabbed the girl full on captures your other friend! But what makes it so sad is there is this book which you two communicate by by writing messages and transporting them by dog. Well, when you wake up the book is there with the dadgum flowers where she died in it. WHY DO YOU HURT ME LIKE THIS GAME!  WHY!

So, I've been playing through the games I got mor my birthday and Christmas, and I have really enjoyed them. Here is a list of the ones I've beaten/enjoyed very much.

Bioshock Infinite. Very good game with easy combat, a super engaging story, and some of the most iconic characters to come out of the last generation of gaming. Elizabeth is just like, the best. Plus there is a twist which makes everything connect.

Final Fantasy 15. Easily my favorite game of 2016. Loved every second I played it. Basically, it was meant for me in every way. Such good combat and story I could not put it down for weeks.

Watch Dogs 2. Now this game isn't the most family friendly one out there, but it is still good. I find most of the enjoyment in the hacking rather than the story, which is great because the world is built around that concept.

Pokémon Moon. This game took everything great about X and made it ten times better. All the things changed for the new region were fantastic. I especially love the new moves that came with the types. Plus the region of Alola is pretty dang nice.

The Arkham Games (Arkham Asylum, Arkham City, Arkham Knight). These three games are a perfect trilogy. The first one starts out like a comic book made into a game with a nice open area and fast paced story. Then things start to change in the City with new villains and schemes, until finally in Knight you are faced with multiple threats spanning from all the way back to the first game. I mean, it is Batman after all.

Skyrim: Speical Edition. 'Nuff Said.

Stardew Valley: I love this game with a burning passion. From the moment I planted my first parsnip seed I knew I would be hooked. This game sucked the life out of me but it was worth it. There is just so much to do!

So yeah, those are the games I've beaten and recommend highly. Hopefully this year I can find even better ones (Except Scalebound... THE ONE GAME I WANTED TO PLAY)

I'm currently playing Baseball on NES:

Spoiler
I don't know why, but for some reason it just keeps being the best baseball game that I have ever played. It's as primitive as can be, but it turns that fact into its biggest advantage... it doesn't try to sell fancy camera angles nor over-complicated fielding (like games such as ESPN Baseball Tonight) and that just makes it the perfect time killer -although, I gotta admit that sometimes playing the outfield is a little awkward and the AI is the meanest in the history of anything, kinda like the offspring of Skynet and Josè Canseco, but I digress-.

It's not that it's hard, it's just... mean-spirited. Let me try to illustrate my point by the means of a direct example:

At one point I had taken down the first two batters of the computer, but the third one just barely got to first base. Since the game's flow was so overwhelmingly on my favor, I decided to tease the thing by passing the ball around all the in-field players (thus delaying the next at-bat). I did this twice, and... while the ball was going from first to third... the darn thing went and stole second! I was like "WHAT?! HOW DARE YOU?!"

On another game, I had completely shut down the game's offensive; I hit a HR off my first at-bat and struck out the top of the order with remarkable ease... then, on the very bottom of the ninth inning, the thing got hits off my every pitch and completely stole the win for me. And the thing is that this happens on every game, it will ALWAYS put up a fight and you will sweat to come on top. I have won more than I have lost, but no game ends with you winning for more than three runs... it's super challenging.
[close]

I have also been playing Bases Loaded (also on the NES) and, while vastly superior, it lost a lot of playability and charm. Kinda like... "Nice! Now I can change the line-up, see the stats, watch the pitcher's throwing motion and the number in his back (among a ton of other things); This is really cool! But... uh-oh, the sudden change of camera angle after they have gotten a hit off me made me lose track of the ball and now the batter got to a scoring position with no effort whatsoever". I'm sure I could eventually get used to it, but the problem is that I already know better.

And I have been trying to push my way thru LUNAR: Dragon Song. What a waste of a great name and franchise.

@Sierra: You ever play Backyard Baseball (the original, or at most the 2003 version, not the later ones or the PS games, which are inferior)? It's also known for its simplicity, while having a charm and personality to it that other baseball games lack. Both me and Matthias have played it.

It depends on what you're looking to get out of Skyrim. You won't find a deep narrative or particularly clever writing, but you will enter a wonderfully interesting world that provides hours of little diversions and hidden tidbits. That's my experience with it.

I found the world slightly disappointing. But my favorite part was that Dwemer cavern, I forget the name of it though but it ran underneath most of Skyrim.

Interesting.

Right now I started the game as the Duke of Dehubarth in Wales. I took over Ireland relatively quickly and allied myself with the Holy Roman Empire and France, then I requested an invasion of England from the Pope, I took over England with the help of the Holy Roman Empire and became Emperor of Britannia. Shortly thereafter I took over Scotland. Then I allied myself with France and requested an Invasion of the Holy Roman Empire from the Pope. Now I have most of Greece, the Holy Roman Empire, and the Empire of Britannia. And the year is 1301 I believe.

Ok, so I just found my fourth favorite video game: The Witcher 3. Oh my GOSH the game is so good. I have played it for a month now and still have not beaten it. The world is so big yet full of stuff to do, and the story is one of the best if not the best in any game I have ever played. All of you choices matter, and each character becomes a part of the overall narrative in ways you could never expect. I just love it so so so much. Plus it is based off a book series and I picked up the first one a few days ago, and it is already as good. Gah, I wish I had found out of this came earlier!

Well, that's debatable. There are other games series out there like Halo, Fallout, Dark Forces/Jedi Knight, Skyrim, Deus Ex...

Unless you mean best children's* game, which makes more sense.

What Zelda has that most of those other series don't is consistency. Nearly all of the home console Zelda games are fantastic.

Those other series aren't anywhere near that level. Fallout 1, 2, and NV are some of the greatest games ever made, but on the other hand Brotherhood of Steel is pretty terrible and Fallout 3 and 4 frankly aren't very good. It carries over to the rest of the games you mentioned.

Zelda has over twenty mainline games, and I'd say the worst (Phantom Hourglass) is still at least an 8/10, most being 10/10. I can't think of many series with that kind of track record.

Oh yeah, Zelda games are my all time favorite, especially both Ocarina of Time and Breath of the Wild. Another good series that is consistently good is the Uncharted franchise. All 4 (about to be 5) are above a 9/10 and are just enjoyable.

I don't seem to get tired of those kinds of games, but then again I know why that is and most people aren't unfortunate enough to relate to that, so I get that you got burned out of them.  It does seem like the kind of thing people normally would need to be in the right mood to play, besides.

I use a second age HP laptop that shuts off when a being unplugs the power cord. There are many other physical disadvantages as well, such as the loose hinge that gives the screen two points of articulation. The webcam, unless exposed to extremely bright environments, refuses to even pick up the full silhouette of a figure. Not nearly all of the keys work, so naturally the next decision for this old broken but strangely sage computer was to plug in a separate keyboard. A while back I was making plans for obtaining a far greater, more powerful computer. But like many plans, and many ideas, this was forgotten. But I still feel the happy sensation of hope. Hope for something that just might be around the corner.

It was on sale for 1,099 US

I don't think that's too bad, honestly.  I've been thinking about building a computer (and I still plan to), but for a rig with more or less the same stuff in it (I don't know what type of 2060 is in the laptop, or the motherboard, or anything like that), the prices I was seeing were coming out to more than that all put together.
Title: Re: Video Games
Post by: Kolman on November 21, 2019, 08:47:39 PM
the 2060 is the laptop equivalent to the GTX 1070 Titan which is for the gaming desktops your card has more shaders but features a lower clock speed to help it stay cool because it is in the laptop and doesn't get the efficient cooling that desktops get the I7 as long as it is a 8th gen or higher will be sufficient for you to play just about any game you want. an nabbing it for $1100 is actually on par with the cost parts so not a bad buy at all.
Title: Re: Video Games
Post by: Kade Rivok on November 21, 2019, 08:52:19 PM
The i7 is actually 9th gen, but I doubt I'll be pushing it to it's limits anyways.  The only kind of workout it's going to be getting from me is games, and having 30 tabs open at once -_-

As for the GPU, since I'm a newbie I'm not really too focused on overclocking right now, so it's good enough for me  ;D

@Kade Rivok There's a discord for the forum period. I can send you an invite tomorrow when our internet isn't about to die. Out of curiosity, what do you plan on playing? I7 and 2060 should be fine for most things, but that processing's going to bog on some higher-demand stuff (also, how many cores?).
Title: Re: Video Games
Post by: Kade Rivok on November 27, 2019, 02:16:51 PM
As far as gaming goes, I think an i7 should be fine, right?  An i9 would kinda be overkill (strictly for gaming, I mean)

It's an 8700 so it only has six cores.  I would have preferred it being an 8 cored 9700, but it'll still do the job.  And I definitely would have preferred something stronger than the 2060, but it's a decent mid-range choice.  (I don't need everything running at ultra anyways, this is my first real step into PC gaming after all).  As for what I'm going to play... dunno!  I need to build my PC games library after all but, from past experience, I tend towards co-op most of all.  I'm not really into heavy PVP.

Oh, and my discord username is Kadeworks

If you're not doing anything too big or intensive, you're probably fine with what you've named. I'm using I7 as well (might even be the same one), and I can play Destiny 2, Dark Souls 3, and For Honor without any issues.
Title: Re: Video Games
Post by: Rusvul on November 27, 2019, 09:56:25 PM
An i7 should be just fine. I have a fairly old i7 (6 cores, 3.5ghz) and I have yet to come across a game it can't handle. In almost all cases, the bottleneck will be your GPU (for most things) or your RAM (for Minecraft and a handful of other poorly-optimized games). That said, upgrading your GPU is very easy, whereas upgrading your CPU is a whole ordeal. If you're building a PC, I'd recommend buying a more-than-sufficient GPU that will last a good few years, and then putting a little less money into your graphics card under the assumption you'll have to replace it in a few years.

Not sure if anyone cares, but the actor who played the voice of the Soldier in Team Fortress 2, Rick May, died a few days ago from the Covid-19 virus.
He is also Peppy Hare from Starfox I think.

My good sir. How the heck am I supposed to get more "skilled" if I let a pro player play for ME. Not to mention the fact that you don't get much out of achievements in OW2...

Maybe they meant that the boosting unlocks or ranks up in game skills?  Do you level up your skills/abilities/ults in OW2?  I haven't actually played it lol

No. The only time it helps is early game when you have to unlock characters, but that dosent matter cause you just have to finish a match (win or lose)to earn them. It's def a bot but I don't know who would even by that product....

I mean if u get platinum or whatever the highest rank all you get is clout...Cause you can't play because you'd be stomped by people who actually earned their way to the top sooo...
