Title: World War 1 CYOA
Post by: Hickory on October 24, 2016, 06:30:31 PM
It's not an addiction! I can stop anytime!

So... I know that this is probably going into "TOO MANY CYOAs" territory, but we need some variation, right? Anyway, after playing Battlefield 1, I decided a sort of medium for the Cellars RP was needed. Not to old, but not in the far flung future. Enter World War 1. This will not be as often as the Star Wars one, probably being updated once or twice a week, to allow for multiple people to have time to think and vote. Also, this will be very realistic, so no Call of Duty antics this time around. Hopefully this gets a good amount of attention, besides James.

<O>

Spring, 1917. The fringes of the Argonne forest.

"Wilson! On your feet!"

You awaken to the smell of mud, gunpowder, and stale food. Lieutenant Thomas's angry face hovers over yours. The hole you're sleeping in is dug into the side of a trench wall, the "floor" covered with your overcoat. Something digs into your side when you move, and you pull your bolt-action rifle out from under you.

"The regiment is preparing for a charge," says Thomas. "Gather with the others by the infirmary."

Wiping dirt and grime from your eyes, you slide your bandolier over your shoulder and head for the infirmary. The war has been raging for 3 years now, and the new battleground in the Argonne forest marks yet another area devastated by the artillery shells and endless battles in no man's land. The allied forces are losing in many areas to the Central Powers, and you are part of hundreds of thousands of men deployed to perform a massive counteroffensive against the enemy.

Thomas moves to the front of your regiment as you join in the back ranks. Your buddy, George, shifts slightly so you can fall in. A few more soldiers are awoken and brought to the assembly before Thomas begins with his orders. "Our forward scouts have reported that the Germans are moving into the trees of the forest. Information from the Admiralty tells us that there's a crashed train in the forest, carrying valuable code books and equipment. If the enemy gets their hands on the train, we'll lose a valuable asset in the war. We're going into the forest to repel the Jerrys and try and secure the train. Ready?"

You join the regiment's cheer. The mass of men begins to move towards the front lines. You decide to check your equipment on the way.

Wilson's inventory

Bolded items are equipped.

1 SMLE MkIII bolt action rifle. (30 rounds)0
1 pair of field glasses. (allows you to spot targets at farther distances)
4 armor piercing rounds. Fires from your rifle.
1 trench knife
2 stick grenades
1 pack of cigarettes.
1 flip lighter.
1 sandwich
1 canteen of water.
[close]

Satisfied with what you have, you follow George into the forward trenches. The distant sound of artillery cannons firing now reaches your ears. You load 10 bullets into your rifle and switch off the safety. Luckily for the forest, little to no rounds have hit the trees, so it looks untouched next to the obliterated battlefield behind you. "Ready?" yells Thomas. "Charge!"

The entire regiment climbs over the trench walls. The ground thunders as other regiments run across the field into the forest. A bullet pings off a rock by your feet, and you start to zigzag to avoid enemy fire. Your fellow soldiers are cut down as the Germans spot the army enter the trees. You see a cloud of smoke raise above the German lines. They've already reached the train. George and you take cover behind a large boulder to decide a plan. "We need to take out the Jerrys on the machine guns," says George. "Any ideas?"

Use your field glasses to spot enemy machine gunners.
Shoot over the rock with your rifle, and hope your bullets hit something useful.
Try to get closer to the enemy lines.

Field glasses for the win. Running at machine gun nests you can't see doesn't sound like my idea of a good time.

Poll up.

I've changed my policy, once every two days should suffice, but often I will update it each day should I have the time. I'll give it a few more hours before updating.

EDIT: Feel free to discuss in the thread if you want.

You unbuckle the leather case attached to your belt. The pair of binoculars inside have served you well on several different occasions. Now, you peer through them towards where the machine gun fire is coming from. With the aid of the glasses, you pick out the Germans on the guns. Two Madsen MGs, one of the heralds of a new age of automatic weapons. You duck back behind the boulder, and tell George everything you saw. The both of you contemplate your options.

The gunners are occupied firing on easier British targets, so there's a chance you could sneak up using natural cover in the forest. Or, you could use a similar tactic and circle around the side, which would have a greater success rate, but less chance of survival if spotted. George listens, then suggests his own tactic. "We could just stay behind this boulder and see if we can pick off the Jerrys from here."

Try to get closer from a frontal direction.
Try to get closer from the side.
Take potshots from behind your cover.

If they're close enough together, could we use a grenade once we got closer?

Flanking them would be a lot smarter, the German's are busy holding off a frontal attack. It'd be kinda dumb actually to go right at them. And taking potshots would give away our position.

I say go around from the side, maybe with a grenade at the ready. Make sure to stick by George and move up tactically, one person ready to provide covering fire if its needed at all times.

Oh forget it, I'm too into this stuff to wait a day or two. :-/

With your rifle ready, you creep around the other side of the boulder. Beyond the mossy rock lies a large amount of other stones to use as cover when advancing. You and George take turns covering each other as you advance on the Germans. Finally, you reach a steep ledge and behind to climb over, so you can get a good shot on the Germans.

After you crest the ledge, the German gunners are unaware of your presence. You ready a grenade to throw... but you could also save the grenades and take out the gunners with your rifle.

Use the grenade.
Use your rifle.

You pull out one of your stick grenades. The weapon is designed to be thrown, and the wooden handle is meant to be made as light as possible to facilitate it. The metal head is full of explosive, and you pull the pin before tossing the weapon into the midst of the gunners. Over the sound of the guns, they don't notice the grenade. You cover your ears quickly and crawl behind the ledge.

Boom!

The gun position has been eradicated. You join the rest of the British troops into the forest, towards the train. German forces put up similar resistance, but you take them down easily. A German soldier charges you, but gets stabbed in the back by George. "Let's go," he says. The battleground expands into the forest as the two opposing sides get used to the battlefield. Right now, you could do a few things.

Stay behind and pick off German stragglers with your rifle.
Continue towards the train.
See what you can see with the field glasses.

Ignoring other battles, you continue towards the train. The British are starting to win, barely. The passenger train comes into view - an ornate string of white and red carriages, lead by a red engine. You descend into the small dip that the destroyed bridge had crossed - it looks like the Germans blew up the bridge to get the train.

George jumps across the river to the side with the train. You follow him, and the sounds of other soldiers following you give you sufficient motivation to continue to head towards the train. George pulls open one of the doors on the end, and you enter. Inside, you can smell burnt wood, and a few bodies. It seems as though the Germans took most the passengers as prisoners.

Finally, you reach car 9, the one with the precious Allied cargo. The big doors are closed, keeping the windowless car in darkness. As your eyes adjust, you can pick out a few trunks, and weapon crates. A few other British soldiers enter the room, and you all make sure there aren't any traps or hiding enemy troops. "I suppose we can open some of these chests, and check them," you suggest. The nearest one is short and stout, and locked with a simple clasp. Inside are some weird, shiny parts that seem to match your rifle. You scoop them up, and they fit easily inside your bag.

Wilson got SMLE MkIII modifications.

Before you can start opening the other chests, the door slides open, revealing grey clothed German storm troopers. In the lead is someone who looks a lot like an officer, with a cloth cap instead of a helmet, and a pistol holstered on his leg. "Hands up!" he shouts in broken English. You and the other soldiers drop your rifles, and the Germans pick them up.

Wilson lost the SMLE MkIII.

"Don't resist, or the Kaiser's troops will show no mercy."

You and George exchange looks.

(No poll, post your response.)

Try to convince the officer to let you go unharmed.
Try to bargain with the officer.
Curse the officer.

Well I don't think reasoning is going to do much, and he's surrounded by his fellows, so bargaining with him wont work. Personally I want to know why Thomas didn't place a lookout, he ought to be replaced.

Might as well curse the officer in our strong British accent.

"Go to hell," you shout. George and the other soldiers nod appreciatively, and add a few jibes of their own. "You couldn't kill a rabbit," said one of the soldiers. "Yore ugly mug would scare it off."

Infuriated, the officer pistol whips the soldier down flat, then raises his gun to do the same to you.

Fight the officer off.
Let yourself be hit.
Dodge the blow.

The pistol swipes by your ear as you dodge to the side. "You...!" the officer yells. He prepares to strike again, but several things happen at once.

The crack of a rifle splits the air, and the officer is suddenly the past.

Five shapes emerge from the surrounding shrubbery, all armed and with hats folded up on one side.

Trees come crashing down, and an armored jeep smashes into the clearing. A projectile hits the side of the vehicle, and it promptly explodes.

The remaining German soldiers are cut down by the figures. You pick up your rifle as one of the figures descends.

Wilson got the SMLE MkIII.

"Got you out of a right jam," says the soldier. Australians. "Good to see our cousins are alive and kicking," says George. The Aussie smirks. "Anytime. Let's get you out of here. The Jerries grabbed most of the loot, and we're going after them. Command allowed us some tanks," he says, breaking into a full grin. "I'm Frederick Bishop."

The soldiers grab a few crates from the train and you all head up the side of the dip and into the road going through the forest. Quite a few motors are going. The first vehicle you see is a tank. The Mark V landship. You've seen a few of these behemoths crawling towards enemy trench lines in the distance, but this is the first time up close. Behind it is an unarmed jeep - obviously the transportation for any cargo recovered from the train. Another landship, and two more jeeps, each with a gun mounted. "You, take the gunner position on one of the jeeps," Bishop orders you. Something occurs to you. "What about my CO? Thomas?" you ask. "Don't worry, he's okayed the move," Bishop waves his hand. "Just get in the jeep."

George takes the passenger's side of the jeep you get in. The gun you now wield is a Browning light machine gun. Powerful, heavy, and invincible, mounted guns like this could fend off waves of attackers easily. You have some time before the convoy gets on the move, so you take out the gun mods you discovered earlier. A closer look shows you what they are.

-2x scope.
-Weights to balance out the weapon. Makes it harder to wield in CQB.
-Suppressor. Makes it harder for enemies to detect you, but makes every other stat of the gun go down.
-Bayonet to attach for charges at enemies.

Equip which attachments? (Suppressor and Bayonet go on the same slot, so only one at a time.) Note that you need to be in non combat areas like this one to be able to make complex changes like the weights.)

Heck yeah, 'Straya to the rescue!

I'd say attach a scope, weights, and suppressor. I can't imagine getting in close-quarters is a good thing, so let's try to avoid doing that and focus on being able to take enemies out from afar without being noticed.

Timeskip.

You exit the woods and into the German lines. It looks just like the British ones - a wartorn, muddy wasteland. You can spot the German lorry carrying the stolen British goods, and the convoy pursues it. A few shots from the land ship immobilizes the lorry, and the convoy stops by it. You can see helmets moving about in the German trenches. Bishop does too. "Wilson, George, take your Brits and cover the trenches while the team secures the truck."

You look around for a plan. You could climb into the nearby tower with a good view into the trenches, or you could descend into the trenches themselves and hunt for enemies.

Get into the tower.
Descend into the trenches.

A quick climb up the ladder puts you in a perfect place to shoot down at the German troops. Peering down your sights, you see a lot of targets.

Target the machine gunners.
Target the anti-tank soldiers.
Target the medic.

Its more useful to target someone who will be able to shoot back. I'd say the anti-armor soldiers would probably be a smart first target, as they probably have the more accurate rifles. Those heavy WWI machine guns would be more difficult to turn around and aim up at a tower, even if they bothered to do so.

I'd say target the most legitimate targets first, and then move on to the machine gunners, and probably just leave the medics alone. Maybe as a precaution make sure George doesn't open fire, his unsilenced weapon will be a dead giveaway. Just have him stand ready.

I voted for the macgunners, but it was a toss-up between that and the anti-armor. The main reason I was thinking the machine gunners was because I thought they'd be the biggest threat to all of our infantry running around, but the anti-armor could be trouble too (especially if they figure out where our fire is coming from).
Title: Re: World War 1 CYOA
Post by: Hickory on October 29, 2016, 08:46:57 PM
(The logic behind attacking anti-armor is that they'd destroy your tanks and transportation)
Title: Re: World War 1 CYOA
Post by: LT Sandpaw on October 29, 2016, 08:52:05 PM

Yeah but they aren't just armed with explosives and mines, they'd have rifles too, which in this situation would be more dangerous then a machine gun which is facing the wrong way.

Still James made a good point about helping out our buddies who are running around in the trenches, a machine gun is worth any five hundred rifles, so it could be smart to take them out.

You land a few shots on the three machine gunners, sending two to the grave and the third into immense pain as your bullet decimates his knee. The anti-tank soldiers and the medics continue on unheeded, too close to the tanks for them to get a bead on the troops. You need to stop the soldiers from destroying the vehicles, and at the same time, your lifeline.

Throw a grenade at the soldiers.
Fire your rifle at the soldiers.

Nearby the convoy, about 40 meters at most. Your bolt action rifle is well suited for longer distances, though, and you have a scope on it.

Bad idea. 40 metres is pretty bloody far to throw anything, and I doubt we're an Olympic athlete. Besides, the stick grenade isn't very aerodynamic, and even if we are in the tower, 120 feet is still pretty far for something like that.
Title: Re: World War 1 CYOA
Post by: James Gryphon on October 30, 2016, 01:00:24 PM
I did a search of the dynamics of WWI grenades before I made that post. Soldiers were apparently expected to be able to throw them quite a distance, from 30 to as many as 50 yards. (http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?/topic/166971-grenade-throwing-how-far/) Wikipedia suggests German stick grenades specifically could be thrown from 27 to 37 metres, and the tower's height should give us a little extra distance.
Title: Re: World War 1 CYOA
Post by: LT Sandpaw on October 30, 2016, 01:28:21 PM

Well its one thing to know that we can throw a grenade that far, but another to actually expect it to be good first throw.

Honestly I don't see why we don't just shoot at them with our rifle. 40m is an easy shot, it'll be like shooting fish in a barrel. We still have seven rounds loaded.

Oh BTW we need to prioritize getting Wilson a gasmask, he doesn't have one for some reason and that's suicide out on the Western Front.

Rifle. I still don't trust the grenade that much, and wasting them now is probably a bad idea if some tanks or other situations show up where we'd need them. If Wilson also shoots with us, then we can take them out a lot easier.

(You're Wilson, George is your sidekick.)

You and the other British soldier in the tower and in the ground open fire on the German soldiers, gunning them down. One, however, manages to pull the pin on an anti-tank grenade before dying. The tread on one of the landships is blown open, and the side gun is destroyed. You climb down from the tower to help, and notice that your gun is empty.

Yeah best reload, also we should remove the weights, and scope so that we can use our rifle at close range. Maybe remove the silencer and equip the bayonet instead.

You can switch the bayonet and scope, but the weights are complex mods that require a safe environment to switch. ;)

You pull back the bolt on your rifle, emptying the last cartridge and leaving the rifle completely empty. A grope behind your back gets you two strips of bullets, which you press into the rifle. Before any Germans appear, you push the bolt back and remove the silencer and scope, sticking the bayonet on the barrel. Now, you can help out the tank.

The driver, a man by the name of Edwards, is standing by the damage. "Well, looks like th' tread's been broken apart. One of the hull platings was blown off, an' the gun's mechanism has been all but destroyed. We'll still be able to move, as long as you fix the tread."

You nod. Sticking some metal pieces back together can't be too hard. "Have a look through the Jerry's stuff," remarks Edwards. "Should have something useful."

The anti-tank soldiers do indeed have some useful items.

You got a P08 Luger, and three clips of ammo.
You got a flask of liquor.
You got 3 sticks of dynamite, and a detonator.

Turning back to the tank, you kneel down by the broken tread. A quick fix is all that's needed, just like the driver said. But how should you do it?

How will you fix the tread? (remember, you have multiple options as to what to do.).

Wilson's inventory
Bolded items are equipped.

1 SMLE MkIII bolt action rifle. (20 rounds, 0 rounds loaded)

P08 Luger. (three clips, 1 clip (8 bullets) loaded.)

Note: Your sidearm allows you to quickly finish off enemies if your main weapon is unable to. Some sidearms have advantages, like powerful revolver's distance abilities. Most, however, are equal in most ways.)

1 pair of field glasses. (allows you to spot targets at farther distances)
4 armor piercing rounds. Fires from your rifle.
1 trench knife
1 stick grenade.
1 pack of cigarettes.
1 flip lighter.
1 sandwich
1 canteen of water.
SMLE MkIII mods.
-2x scope.
-Weights to balance out the weapon. Makes it harder to wield in CQB.
-Suppressor. Makes it harder for enemies to detect you, but makes every other stat of the gun go down.
-Bayonet to attach for charges at enemies.
3 sticks of dynamite.
1 flask of liquor.

Check for tools and spare parts in the back of the tank.

And/or closely inspect the damage to the tread.

A closer look at the tank's tread gives you a good understanding of how it works. Steel plates are riveted together in a flexible manner, but maintain a strong link and can hold up the tank on the ground. You look around at the back of the tank, in the storage compartment.

You got - two pistol mags. (requires modification to fit into pistols)
You got replacement plates.
You got a monkey wrench.
You got a screwdriver.
You got a hammer.

You return to the broken tread.

How should you go about repairing the tread?

Remove broken plates with wrench and screwdriver, then attach new plates with screwdriver and hammer?
Title: Re: World War 1 CYOA
Post by: Hickory on October 31, 2016, 08:45:22 PM
You cover your hands with mud and slop some on the broken links, so the hot metal doesn't burn you. Then you set about taking off the plates and setting new ones in place. A quick job with the hammer and screwdriver fixes them, so nothing except an artillery shell can break them apart. Levering the treads back onto the tracks on the tank, you mentally pat yourself on the back for a good job, before putting back the tools you took.

You lost the monkey wrench.
You lost the screwdriver.
You lost the hammer.
You used replacement plates to repair the tank.

Now, what to do?

Fix the other breakdowns on the tank - broken hull plating, and/or the cannon. (Remember, these are not necessary for the tank's operation)
Check on the stolen goods.
Other (specify. This could range from checking over your inventory to walking around the immediate area.)

Pulling out the flask of liquor, you unscrew the cap and take a gulp. The fiery German liquor warms your throat in the chilly wasteland. You feel a little tipsy and your vision blurs a little, but it quickly clears up. The warm, fuzzy feeling still remains, however. Before heading back around to the side of the tank, you set the half empty flask back on your waist.

The 6-pounder cannon on the landshap is manned by a Scottish man with a thick mane of hair and an equally thick accent. "Ach, it's the repairman," he half jokes. "Names McManus." He holds out his gloved hand, and you reluctantly shake it. "What's the problem with the gun?" you say. "Well, the firin' mechanism's been blown to [weasel], an' it's virtually impossible to load a shell in th' tube, since it's blocked. You'll have to clear the tube, then find a way to make the cannon fire a shell without killing all of the crew."

He pats you on the back before leaving to check on the other crew members. The gun is indeed devastated. How in the world will you fix it?

How will you fix the cannon?

You look into the tube. It's been jammed up with debris; loose metal, mud, and other identifiable objects. You start to reach into the tube.

Ssssss!

"OW! MOTHER OF-"

Your hand has three new scars - The tube is still searing hot from the last shell fired, and the metal inside is also incredibly hot, meaning that you have some burns on your hand. Cooling off your hand in the mud by the tank, you consider. You need to find a way to get the debris out, without injuring yourself.

How will you get the debris out?

You retrieve the tools you used earlier, and a couple of the oil rags, which you wrap around you hand. After shoving in the hammer, you pushi it in further with the wrench. The debris grinds against the tube, but it comes out eventually, plopping into the mud. Pulling out the tools, you return them to the compartment. Another job done. You're getting better at this engineer thing. Now, what to do?

Fix the remaining broken part of the tank - dislocated hull plates.
Check on the stolen goods and Bishop.

(Let's just finish the tank.)

McManus steps back over to you. "Don't worry mate, I'll finish the gun. You fix the hull."

A close inspection of the hull plates tells you what happened. The explosive knocked loose some rivets and the metal piece is hanging loose. You need to find a way to get the plate back into place, firmly. So... how?

How will you fix the hull plate?

You use the wrench to twist the rivets into the metal, then hammer them in firmly. The plate rattles when you push it, but it stays in place. As you return the tools to the compartment, you notice something among the oil rags. Seperating the greasy scraps of cloth, you find a weird leathery sort of hat. Once you inspect the piece, you find that it's got a cylinder and two glass circles. It's a gas mask.

You got the gas mask.

The gas mask allows you to walk through gas attacks. As you wear the mask, though, accuracy is lost and you can't exert yourself as much. It's well worth your life, though...

What should you do now?

Check on the stolen goods and Bishop.

The leather mask fit over your head alright, and you leave it ready to pull down whenever you see gas. Now, you head over to the German transport with the stolen goods. The crashed lorry is being emptied off its goods, and the executed Germans are laying underneath their cloaks. Bishop nods to you as he stands by the recovery site. "All of the crates are here," he says. "Why don't you look through them and make sure their contents is safe? You might even get to keep some..."

He winks at you, and you walk over to the pile of crates. Which one should you open?

Cracking open the medium sized crate, you shove away the top and look inside. It looks like some sort of miniature cannon, with small shells. The contraption looks simple enough, but weighs a ton. You might be able to keep the device, but you'd have to drop some of your own inventory.

Drop your armor piercing rounds and the dynamite, and gain the device.

Bishop wanders over to you. "Well there, that's the rocket gun. The doughboys invented it cause they were tired of artillery an' all that."

He pulls back the "bolt," opening up the chamber. One of the shells fits right into it, and he closes the bolt. "This thing can put a dent in one of the German's Fortresses. A few shells will totally destroy it. Useful for staying at a safer distance, but not really a quick weapon, since you need to use the little stand to keep it stable. Your amor piercing bullets could serve the same purpose, but don't do much damage to those tanks."

Pick up the rocket gun, in exchange for losing your dynamite and armor piercing bullets.

Deciding that the rocket gun isn't worth it, you move on to the next crate. This one is much smaller, and you wonder what could possibly fit inside. Opening the lid reveals a weird, pineapple-shaped metal... thing, that fits into your hand. The label on the crate says "FRAG GRENADE". Evidently, this is some sort of grenade that work differently from your stick ones. These grenades look larger than your others ones, which means they could be more effective against bigger targets, but the size means you couldn't throw it nearly as far.

Note: Changing out your equipped grenade is not permanent. If you find another crate with a different grenade, you are welcome to take that one. Picking up the frag grenade will replenish your grenade inventory to 2.

Pick up the frag grenade.
Leave the frag grenade.

You exchange the two frag grenades for your remaining stick grenade. Now, you only have the large crate left. Taking a crowbar, you pry off the lid and peer inside. A strange rifle lies within. The engraving on the side reads "Cei-Rigotti Semi-Automatic Rifle."

The Cei-Rigotti is an Italian rifle with a semi-automatic firing mode. This means that with each pull of the trigger, one bullet is fired. The bolt is automatically moved, allowing for a faster firing rate. Semi-automatic rifles have permanent modifications of a bayonet and iron sights. The Cei-Rigotti has a magazine of 10, strip-fed. It performs better in close quarters, but less effective against more opponents and in longer ranges.

Pick up the Cei-Rigotti in exchange for your SMLE MkIII bolt-action.
Leave the Cei-Rigotti.

Feeling bit hungry, you take out your wrapped cheese and pork sandwich. With the German liquor, you thoroughly fill your stomach. The German counterattack has halted, for the moment. Your fellow soldiers finish loading up the crates for the return trip to your trench lines. "Let's get going," says Bishop. "Soon the Germans will overrun us with another attack."

Boom!

One of the landships explodes as artillery shells smack down directly onto it. "Load up!" yells Bishop. "The Fritz has our coordinates! We HAVE to leave!"

Find a way to survive the artillery barrage.

Hunker down in a artillery crater, its a very small chance that a shell will hit that same spot, and it'll provide decent cover. Also it would probably be smart to place on the gas mask as Groddil says, just in case.

Yanking down on your mask, you stare about wildly. The jeeps start to drive away, and the remaining landship will surely be hit soon. With George nowhere in sight (admittedly, the gas mask restricts your vision), you decide to use your brain and jump into the crater made by the first shell. Your eardrums are pounded by the continuous explosions, your shallow, adrenaline filled breaths heard by yourself in the mask. Eventually, the barrage stops. You hear German being spoken in the distance. There seems to be enemy soldiers coming to check out the remaining friendlies.

Attempt to masquerade as a German.
Leave the crater.
Stay in the crater.

Evidently the Germans aren't totally sure what you can do, because you manage to whip out a grenade and have your finger hooked in the pin. "Listen up Jerrys', I've got a grenade ready to blow you to hell," you say maliciously. The Germans seem to recognize the danger and start to back away, keeping their guns trained on you.

Pull the pin.
Don't pull the pin.
Fake pulling the pin and throw it at them.

Walk towards them. Don't let them get out of blast range, or they'll shoot. Similarly, if we actually throw it, there's a 50/50 chance they'll shoot us before they leap to cover.

You always kept a pack of the finest front-line ration cigarettes on you, and, pulling your Luger out of its holster, you fumble for a second to manage the Luger and put away the grenade, and manage to do so as well as pull out the pack of cigarettes. Taking a couple out, you offer them to the Germans tentatively, and they hesitate before taking them. You provide your flip lighter, and they light their cigarettes, blowing out puffs of smoke.

Plenty of time on the Argonne front has perfected your aim, both of the soldiers fall dead with two less rounds in your Luger. The threat taken care of, you holster the weapon and turn back towards the forest.

Continue to the forest and attempt to return to your lines.
Delve deeper into German territory.

You realize that this is a good chance to perform observation on the enemy lines, while they are preoccupied dealing with the retreating British/Australian raiding team. The thunder of artillery is still heard, but the accompanying explosions grow farther and farther off. You grab your SMLE and wipe some of the mud off. Perhaps some of your soldiers survived the bombardment...

No mans' land is full of chunks of metal, barbed wire emplacements, and countless trenches interrupted by artillery craters. And, naturally, bodies. Lots of bodies.

One of them twitches as you walk by, and you cautiously kneel down by it. A few prods with the bayonet on your rifle prompts it to roll over, revealing the face of George.

"George?" you ask.

George coughs up a little bit of blood, and you immediately drop your rifle to prop him up against a chunk of concrete. "Wilson," he grunts, clearly in substantial pain. "Shrapnel. Left side of my chest."

You pull aside his jacket, revealing the metal in his chest.

Attempt to remove the shrapnel.
Leave George to die.
Put George out of his misery.
