Here is a topic where members can share optical illusions for everyone's enjoyment :D Just please try not to post anything too flashy or dizzying, or at least insert a warning or spoiler. Thanks, y'all!!
My teacher pulled this on my class. If you try it in real life, it really works. Draw two lines of the same length, then add those weird things at the ends. You may be amazed.

^^WARNING: This picture was deliberately edited, so it's not accurate. But the actual illusion works. Seriously, try it out. Draw two lines of equal length, then add those weird things at the end. It's pretty cool!
That picture doesn't work -- I looked at the lines in a graphic editor, and even cut off the arrowheads, and the one on top is definitely longer.
This one is a classic:

Whoa!!! That's so weird! *mind is blown*
What!! :o Oh, I'm really sorry then. The Internet lies.
The illusion itself does work though, it's just the artist goofed for some reason.
Yeah.

Hey cool topic, I used to be very interested in optical illusions, maybe someone will post a new one ;)

Look at her ear and her necklace. That's really an eye and a mouth.
It'd be more accurate to say that it's also an eye and a mouth. ;)

Not exactly an optical illusion, but it's a nifty bit of architecture, so I figured I'd throw it in there.
Oooh, I've always liked optical illusions. :D I'll try and find some good uns.

Oh! I see it! Thank you :)
James, that's awesome. I don't think I've ever seen anything like that.
I love the sidewalk chalk art that some artists are amazingly good at. If you look closely, you can see the lines of the pavement, but their drawings made the image look so real. I tried to attach a photo, but it didn't work. I'll have to figure that out some other time. Just Google '3D chalk art,' that should do it.

If you don't believe it, put your finger over the white bit in the middle.
Stare at the gray dot in the center and move your face away from the screen and then towards it. The circles will "spin."

Wow, these are really cool! I'll see if I can find one...

An example of those 3D chalk drawings. I know there's nothing there but pavement, but that doesn't mean I'm willing to walk across it. (http://www.webdesignai.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/3d-chalk-art-1.jpg)
:o
That is SO COOL!!
Am I the only one who thinks that lava looks like a Batman logo?
No lol ;D
I think it's supposed to.
I've always wanted to do 3D chalk drawings. They are so epic and everything, but I just don't know how. . . . .
Yeah, that pavement drawing is so cool! :o

That was being talked about all over my school! What is the explanation for it?
ITS BLUE AND BLACK! How could people see it differently?! I'm so confused!
Agggggggghhhh my brain ;D!!!!!!!! I see White and Gold. I'm confused too!
No, it's blue and black!!! I can't see white and gold, why?!?!
I don't know :D
It was white and gold when I saw the picture earlier, but now it looks blue and black. Apparently, your eyes see the color differently based on the light and angle you're looking at it from, or something like that. Wierd stuff.
@Eulaliaaa!: Try tilting your screen forward or back. At first I saw white and gold, but then I tilted my screen back and I could see blue and black. Now it is blue and black. :P
...light blue and gold.

It's not working! ???
The dress is blue and dark gold. There's a difference between perception and using photoshop to isolate colors. I think some different variables in the lighting when the picture was taken account for the illusion of gold being black and blue being white.
Apparently I have photoshop eyes.
These are awesome! But that dress one isn't really working...
I still don't get how one sees white and gold. I can maybe make out the blue and gold, though...
I can't see how anyone see's that as blue and black honestly.
It's an optical illusion. Our eyes see it differently because of light and position.

Really?
Really.
EDIT: So I looked up a video about it, apparently it's how different brains view it. The dress is actually blue and black ???
Yeah it's blue and black, you view it differently depending on how the rods and cones in your eyes work. I see silver and gold
I tend to see light blue-violet and dark gold.
I can't even escape this debate on Redwall :P
I just don't know how it's not blue and black ???
Well, that's what an optical illusion does.
I see a ugly gold and purple but I'm fairly sure its black and blue.
I see white and gold, or light blue and gold, and can't see it any other way even when I move my screen.
Here's a SciShow video explaining the dress:
I first saw it as white and gold, but now I can't stop seeing it as blue and black.
Here's a WIRED article about it:
http://www.wired.com/2015/02/science-one-agrees-color-dress/ (http://www.wired.com/2015/02/science-one-agrees-color-dress/)
I see the middle one, and the third one looks like a brightened version of the middle one. But how could anyone see the first one?!
This dress is famous. Everyone I know is talking about it. I see blue and black.

The middle is the original. The other two are edited to either extreme.
Cool. Thanks for sharing, everyone :D
I see black and blue.
White and gold...
Originally white and gold, but now mostly blue and black.
I just can't see anything different to the light blue and darkish gold! But I think I will say no more about that dress now. ;D

I've seen this one in other places before, but how does it work? What is the explanation?

Apparently, the shadow proyected by the cylinder contrasts the lighting on the picture and makes the square "change" its color.
Thanks, Sierra :) That's interesting.

Whoa!!!! That's so weird and cool!
I've seen "the phenomenal power of the human mind" one quite a few times. The triangle, though, threw me off. I hate to admit it, but I actually stared at it for quite a while, couldn't see anything wrong with it, and wondered if it was broken, or else, why it wouldn't work on me. Then...
::)
Ja, I have seen that a few times before. It is sooooo weird, and yet, strangely funny.
I wonder if it works in every language *runs to to Facebook to use his friends as lab rats* :D

It has two "the's".

I fell for the triangle. I read through it, and didn't notice anything wrong, then I reread slowly through it, and realized that there are two 'the's'.
I didn't get the triangle until I read Jukka's post. ;D
I read it pretty well at first, but the word "porblem" threw me off.

What is wrong with the top one?
Look inside the word "good" ;)
I've looked many times! But I can't see anything wrong.
EDIT: Got it!
I like the teach:learn one.
I love the top and bottom ones (although, I'm not sure how much of an optical illusion the learn/teach one actually is... great picture nonetheless).
I don't know what I'm supposed to be looking at on those pictures above. Is a picture meant to form within the words or what? :s

Most of them are words with hidden meanings on them (and I mean that quite literally). I can't figure out what the second one is supposed to be, though.
The first one spells out "Good", but there's another word written within the lines.
On the second one, if you look at the spaces between the letters, you'll see it also spells the word 'You'.

Ohhh! Thank you :)
Finally 'saw' the writing in the third one - that one's particularly good. :)
I then saw the second and finally worked out the first one by blurring my eyes and sensing a pattern emerging with them... :D
I don't know if this
exactly an optical illusion but this logo from the game Deus Ex forms a "D" an "E" and a "X" while is spinning and zooming in and out. Shame that I couldn't find an animated version with a decent size.
I re-discovered Mr. Gonsalves (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rob_Gonsalves)' works thanks to Yahoo, and recommend them to anyone who's interested in this sort of thing. I don't think it's inaccurate to describe them as Escheresque, for anyone else who's a fan of that great artist.
