Title: the 'what if' game
Post by: Vulpin on August 02, 2011, 10:31:12 PM
something my friends and i played on tribal wars and on thread sites similar to this... Its very simple. it starts with a what if question, and then the next person awnsers and gives another for someone else to awnser.

[example:

player1: what is spiderman got stung by a radioactive scorpian?

player2: he wouldnt be call spider man
what if books was never invented?

       And so on]

Since this is a site from which the series of redwall is revolved around, the only rule is that you keep it redwall based.

I'll start, and hope you all have a good time...

[taken from the first book]
What if the pitch black rat, 'Shadow', lived threw the fall and escaped?

What if Slagar had tried to attack the abbey rather than kidnap the kids?
Title: Re: the 'what if' game
Post by: James Gryphon on August 11, 2011, 05:25:25 AM
Well, it depends on his method of operation.

His basic premise of sneaking in under the guise of players was a good one, so if we assume the plan works as before up until then, everyone would have been knocked out, and from there it should have been simple for him to kill everyone off.

However, I have the feeling that if Slagar was about to kill everyone in Redwall Abbey, Martin's spirit would intervene and wake up Matthias, and with his sword, he would easily make mincemeat out of Slagar and his entire band.

What if Martin didn't somehow survive at the end of Mossflower, and died as a result of the wounds inflicted on him by Tsarmina, thus resulting in a double-kill? How would this affect Redwall history?
Title: Re: the 'what if' game

There would not be half the Redwall books there are now, I guess.  :o

What if Ungatt Trunn had kept Salamandastron?
Title: Re: the 'what if' game
Post by: James Gryphon on August 11, 2011, 07:57:05 AM
If Brocktree perished fighting for Salamandastron, then Boar the Fighter's life and times would have been substantially different. As he would have gone to Salamandastron, there would have inevitably been a massive conflict waged between the Fighter and the aged wildcat ruler Ungatt Trunn, which would be a story too long to tell here. If we assume his eventual victory, Redwall history as we know it is virtually unchanged, except that Lord Boar, not Lord Brocktree, would be the best-remembered badger lord of history, and it would be his story that we read about, "Lord Boar", the tale of how Boar came to Salamandastron and recaptured it from the wildcats, instead of "Lord Brocktree". ;)

If, however, Boar perished in this conflict, this spells disaster for Redwall history. If Boar isn't at Salamandastron, then there is no quest to Salamandastron for Martin to go on; hence Martin's sword will never be reforged, and the heroes will never capture Bloodwake, which means that Timballisto would not be freed, which means that Kotir would be just as invulnerable and immovable as Tsarmina predicted. The Corim would do their best, but in the end they would either succumb to the Thousand Eyes Army, or leave Mossflower country. There would probably still be an Abbey built by the Loamhedge mice, but it would not be located in Mossflower country, nor would it be known as Redwall (since they wouldn't have access to sandstone to build it with). The descendants of King Mortspear would rule over their domains, at Salamandastron and Kotir, into perpetuity.

What if Klitch survived (by not drinking the poisoned water), and escaped Salamandastron?
Title: Re: the 'what if' game
Post by: Taggerung_of_Redwall on August 12, 2011, 02:12:45 AM
He probably would have escaped while the victors were busy. After that, he would have gotten himself some sort of vermin gang/horde and done some damage to plenty of creatures.

What if Slagar hadn't killed Vitch? Always an interest to me ever since I first read Mattimeo
Title: Re: the 'what if' game
Post by: Icefire on August 12, 2011, 08:44:41 PM
Well, Vitch would probably have still unintentionally alerted the warriors to his presence and either Matthias or Orlando would have killed Slagar......Of course Slagar would still have had his weapon...He'd probably let it fly at Orlando (as he would seem the bigger threat) and, while Orlando was ducking it, Matthias would have had a short struggle with Slagar that would end in Slagar's death. And Orlando would then argue that he had prior claim to Slagar, but they'd make up in the end again because Slagar was already dead.

What if Martin's sword hadn't been reforged?
Title: Re: the 'what if' game
Post by: Taggerung_of_Redwall on August 12, 2011, 09:10:00 PM
Then someone doesn't know the use of good hard fallen star I guess. For the future though, Martin would have used a different sword. It's a weapon, and it can kill fine enough, regardless of its heritage.

What if the dibbuns in Marlfox hadn't taken to playing as 'Marmfloxes'?

What if Verdauga had poisened Tsarmina instead of the other way around?
Title: Re: the 'what if' game
Post by: James Gryphon on August 13, 2011, 10:32:10 PM
Well, that's kind of implausible since there's no reason for an adult, male wildcat to poison his daughter -- we can safely assume he's larger and stronger, so if he wanted to dispose of her, he could easily just kill her himself, or have his troops put her in prison just like they did with Gingivere.

That said, if Lord Greeneyes' reign continued and Tsarmina was out of the way, we wouldn't have had anything like what we saw in Mossflower. Martin would have been released from prison at the proper time, and with his nemesis Tsarmina taken care of, would have no need to seek vengeance on her. He may or may not have left the country. The Corim would likely not have had as much of a cause to revolt in the first place, since with only Lord Verdauga and Gingivere ruling Kotir, it's likely that their reign over Mossflower would be fair and relatively benevolent. If the Corim was still to fight, though, it's likely that Verdauga would put an end to it -- as it was Tsarmina already nearly won the war with what she had, and we know that under Verdauga, the army was much more disciplined and orderly, ready and suitable for warfare. Ashleg would not have needed to leave Verdauga's service, and would have probably remained distant second to the wildcat ruler.

So the revolt would not have happened, or if it did, the woodlanders would have lost the war just like they did the first time, and be forced to either leave the country or sue for peace.

Eventually, Lord Greeneyes would pass away and Gingivere would ascend to his father's throne. Under Gingivere's benevolent rule, and that of his descendants, the once menacing fortress Kotir would gain a reputation like Redwall's, and it's quite possible a new Abbey would never be built. Generations later, Lord Julian Gingivere, the last of the cat rulers of Kotir, would successfully defend Kotir and the country from the great warlord Cluny the Scourge. Martin's sword wouldn't exist as we know it, but there would be a very nice tapestry of the first of the good cat rulers, Lord Gingivere, hanging up in Kotir's hall.

What if Matthias didn't think to chop down the Bell, and instead went down the stairs to continue the duel with Cluny?

What if Cluny had managed to keep Redwall?
Title: Re: the 'what if' game
Post by: James Gryphon on August 15, 2011, 06:51:11 AM
The situation seemed dire as Cluny's surviving horde was ganged up on by an incredible number of sparrows, shrews, and Redwallers. It would take a massive change of fortune for the as-of-yet undefeated army to win the day.

That change came when Cluny the Scourge came back down into Great Hall, equipped with the shield and sword of Martin.

As the massive rat came roaring into the battlefield, the meaning of the warlord's new armament was immediately obvious to both sides. Cluny's horde took heart; the defenders battled on with grim determination.

However, as great as the army was, they were unable to combat the great rat as his ill-acquired sword tore through them. With the death of the Log-a-Log the Guosim were routed and fled from the Abbey. The sparrows and the remaining Redwallers put up a legendary battle, but at the end of the day the Scourge emerged triumphant, albeit with less than two-score rats left to his command.

Cluny's Castle became the most feared and notorious building of all time. The Scourge ruled over Mossflower with an iron claw. Those killed as a result of his reign included a certain fox going by the name of "Lunar Stellaris" and his entertainment troupe. When the infamous General Ironbeak came down from the north several seasons later, and attempted to conquer the Castle, they were decimated by the ruthless rat warlord.

While the Scourge had no blood descendants, his chosen successors reigned over his Castle for many seasons to come. One Rat King infamously stole the Pearls of Lutra, and then eradicated the Corsairs of Sampetra after their Emperor, "Ublaz Mad Eyes" launched an expedition to reclaim them.

The end of Cluny's Castle would come some seasons after, when the south wall began to crumble. Normally the rat inhabitants would have had time to rebuild it, but the Rapscallions, who had taken to traveling in-land, posed an imminent threat to the castle's defense. The final Rat King took his horde to battle with the Rapscallions near the place that would become known as the Ridge of Dead Rats; it was a bloody affair, but the battle was relatively even, and could have gone either way, had Lady Cregga Rose Eyes and her Long Patrol not come in and destroyed all of both sides.

Having won a massive victory, the Badger Lady proceeded on to Cluny's Castle, once known as Redwall Abbey, and completely demolished it, taking only the few things that were left of the building's original inhabitants. Generations later the site of the building was still empty and uninhabited, and its memory lived on only in the records of Salamandastron.

After successfully helping Gonff, the Prince of Mousethieves and his friend Martin the Warrior escape, the Corim deliberated as to its next move. At length, they decided to work on establishing a spy network to get information about everything going on in Kotir.

Gonff proposed they hire the robin Chibb. Though initially offending the bird, they were eventually able to arrange a payment of eight bags of candied chestnuts in exchange for his services.

Much later, a team of moles broke into Kotir and devised a plan to sink the fortress through several flood tunnels. When Gonff and his company returned from their quest to Salamandastron, they scuttled Wuddship and used it to assist in this effort.

As Tsarmina escaped the ruined fortress, Martin the Warrior confronted her with the now-legendary Sword. He prevailed over the wildcat, but at a great cost; the former Queen's teeth and claws had nearly ripped his body to shreds. Bella of Brockhall and Goodwife Stickle did the best they could to preserve the Warrior's life, but in the end it just wasn't enough and Martin passed on to Dark Forest.

Taking possession of his friend's sword, Gonff tarried in Mossflower for a while, but eventually he grew restless and went on several thieving journeys, taking such items as the Doomwyte jewels. In one adventure down south, he stole the heart of a young mousemaid by the name of Columbine, and persuaded her to return with him to his home in Mossflower country. They settled down into St. Ninian's.

Many seasons later, the horde of Swartt Sixclaw came into Mossflower country. As they posed a certain threat to St. Ninian's, the Gonfelin tribe (of which Bryony was a part of), ambushed the horde and convinced the warlord to take his forces elsewhere. Swartt Sixclaw's son was discovered, and eventually taken to Brockhall.

Veil became a villain and was killed by the Skipper of Otters after poisoning Myrtle the hedgehog. With no son to bother him and without Bryony at hand to rescue Sunflash the Mace, Swartt Sixclaw managed to get his revenge, only to perish in battle with the Long Patrol shortly afterwards.

Many seasons later, a young mousemaid by the name of Storm Gullwhacker came down to Mossflower country and came to reside at St. Ninian's. Graypatch the rat and his crew came by shortly afterwards, but were defeated by the Gonfelins and their allies. Meanwhile, Gabool the Wild crushed a slave rebellion on the isle of Terramort, built a new and very large fleet, and besieged Salamandastron. With no resident Badger Lord, there was a massive battle, but the hares of the Long Patrol, at the cost of almost their entire number, were able to repel the invasion and defeat the searat king.

Far south, Storm and Dandin help save Castle Floret from the Urgan Nagru. Cap'n Slipp and Blaggut stumble across St. Ninian's, but the mice there aren't interested in taking in stray rats. Slipp is killed trying to steal from them, but Blaggut lives to settle down in Mossflower country, and eventually discovers his talent for building boats.

Many seasons after that, Ferahgo the Assassin decides the time has come to conquer Salamandastron. Dingeye and Thura aren't able to get into St. Ninian's, and so continue on down the road. The legendary Sword is never stolen. The spirit of Gonff appears to a Mossflower squirrel, Samkin, in a dream, and they set out on a quest that saves Salamandastron from destruction.

A long time later, Cluny the Scourge comes to Mossflower. Taking the Gonfelin thieves by surprise, he easily conquers St. Ninian's, and takes the sword with it. In the ensuing war with the otters and squirrels, Cluny burns out much of the forest, turning Mossflower Forest into the Mossflower Plains. Eventually the rat, having achieved his objective of destruction and mayhem, and having destroyed much of what made the country appealing, continues traveling on. General Ironbeak and his army comes down from the north, seeking warmer and easier territory to inhabit. They find the ruins of St. Ninian's and take up residence there.

Seasons later, Emperor Ublaz Mad Eyes sends a ship to steal the Pearls of Lutra. Graylunk escapes with the Pearls, and seeks refuge in St. Ninian's, where the inhabitants steal the Pearls of Lutra from him. However, Conva's trackers soon discover their whereabouts, and wage a short, bloody war with the jackdaws, ravens, and other birds. In the end, all six of the pearls are brought back to the isle of Sampetra, to adorn the pine marten's crown.

By the time of "The Long Patrol", the Mossflower Plains still have a long way to go to recover from the Scourge's rampage. The main significant place left in the country, and the only one that has survived since Gonff's time, is Camp Willow, which is home to an otter holt.

---

Those mice may not have seemed to make much of a difference in Mossflower, but you can see that the country really changes without them in the long term. ;)

What if Saltar succeeded in defeating Gabool in their swordfight?

I started writing this before Nightfire's response, and it seems a waste of time to just throw it away, so I figured I'd post it anyway.

---

Countless seasons after The Rogue Crew, when the names of legendary conquerors like Cluny the Scourge, Ferahgo the Assassin, and Damug Warfang had long since been forgotten, the Sword of Martin had become mere mythology, and even Redwall Abbey had long eroded away, the final Badger Lord of the Mountain of the Fire Lizards passed on, alone, entombed with his fathers.

Salamandastron remained unoccupied, but none of the sea vermin who passed by dared to near it, for not long after its master's death, the mountain had begun to glow brighter than they had ever seen it before, and ever would again. A geologist might have predicted the crisis ahead, but the uneducated masses who would be affected by it knew nothing of the technical details.

Late one evening, it finally happened. The earth shook and the night sky was lit up as bright as daytime. Salamandastron violently erupted, expelling countless tons of materials to the nearby shores, killing everything within twenty miles, and notably altering the world's climate for about four seasons.

With time, the land recovered. Salamandastron became known for its lava flow, and for being a useful source for minerals, many of which the eruption had revealed. The treasures, tools, and graves of its former rulers, however, remained forever buried and inaccessible by any beast who still remembered their existence.

---

As far as Nightfire's question, I don't think it would really change all that much... I can understand it fine myself. If there was some molespeak thrown in there, then it might become a problem.

What if the corsairs and monitors on Waveworm managed to tolerate each other long enough to sail back to Sampetra?

Traveling a ways distance after the destruction of Goreleech, Ranguvar happened to stumble across the army of Badrang the stoat, who intended to begin styling himself as a tyrant.

Going into a berserk rage, Ranguvar fought Badrang's army, nearly killing the Tyrant, but was ultimately killed in the effort.

Because of this, many seasons later, Badrang felt a certain sense of deja vĂ¼ when Felldoh offered up his challenge, and thus prudently declined the duel. Thus, the mad squirrel continued his guerilla campaign up until Martin's army stormed Marshank. Fully consumed with Bloodwrath, Felldoh ran down the Tyrant and violently killed him, thus saving Rose's life in the process.

Martin and company returned in peace to Noonvale, and the warrior mouse soon married Laterose. They had two children and lived happily ever after.

Meanwhile, down in Mossflower Woods, Gonff, the Prince of Mousethieves succeeded in escaping Kotir with the help of the Corim. Bella of Brockhall asked the mouse for a favor: to go on a quest to Salamandastron and bring back her father, Boar the Fighter, to deliver Mossflower from Tsarmina's tyranny.

Gonff accepted the request and went on the journey, taking Dinny the Mole with him. After many trials, and after meeting Log-a-Log Big Club, they finally reached Salamandastron. Boar welcomed them, and forged two very fine daggers for Gonff, each one made out of the metal of a falling comet, invulnerable and incredibly sharp.

After fighting Ripfang's horde, Gonff and his party took control of Bloodwake and returned to Mossflower. With help from the veteran warrior Timballisto, the Corim constructed a catapult that destroyed Kotir. Tsarmina Greeneyes fled to the North, back to her grandfather Mortspear's domain, in the hopes of claiming the kingdom or whatever remains of it might exist.

After the Loamhedge mice built Redwall Abbey, Gonff went on several thieving journeys, capturing such prizes as the Doomwyte jewels in the process. After he died, his daggers remained in his family for a time, but were eventually left at Redwall Abbey, in the gatehouse.

Dandin acquired them, along with his ancestor's flute, and wielded them to great effect during his journeys with Mariel. What became of them is unknown.

Many seasons later, Redwall was besieged by the great warlord Cluny the Scourge. Matthias, a young mouse who greatly admired Redwall's legendary hero, Gonff, went on several thieving journeys, helping demoralize Cluny's horde. The most valuable and important item he stole was Cluny's own war helmet.

Around this time, the Shadow attempted to open up Redwall's gates, but Matthias became aware of this by the help of the spirit of Gonff, and helped prevent the creature from succeeding.

In the midst of yet another attempt to besiege Redwall, this time by siege tower, the infamous Scourge was killed by a very well-thrown stone from the young mouse's sling.

Like his hero, Matthias became known as a carefree, adventurous mouse. Not content with the life of the Redwall Order, he went on some journeys around the country. In his most famous one, he met the Guosim, who informed him that an evil adder, Asmodeus, was devouring shrews around the country. With Matthias's help, they eventually found a way to kill the evil adder Asmodeus. Eventually he returned to Redwall, married Cornflower and had a son, named Mattimeo.

Slagar the Cruel, masquerading himself as Lunar Stellaris, came to Redwall Abbey. However, Matthias' sharp vision caught sight of the fox slipping sleeping draught into the Redwallers' drinks. The fox and his crew were summarily taken care of.

Eventually Mattimeo had a son of his own, Matthias II. This Matthias participated in the rescue of Abbot Durral from the Corsairs of Sampetra.

Wow. Interesting. :o :D
But you didn't ask a question. And by the way, what does deja vu mean? ???
What if Chickenhound had been killed, and not become Slagar?
Title: Re: the 'what if' game
Post by: Redwall Musician on September 02, 2011, 03:31:12 PM
(Well deja vu mean a feeling of having already experienced the present situation)

Mattimeo would have never been kiddnapped. Orlando and Auma would have never been to Redwall. Mattimeo would have probably been a brat forever. He may have never married Tess, which means Martin Jr. would have never been born. Ironbeak would have still attacked Redwall, but with Matthias, Basil, and Jess there he would not have held it so long. And Cheek would never had come into the picture.

What if Martin had died in battle?
Title: Re: the 'what if' game
Post by: Icefire on September 02, 2011, 04:44:27 PM
Which battle? If at Marshank, it's possible Tsarmina would not have been defeated. If in Mossflower, I believe James Gryphon already answered that and he can articulate it far better than I can, so go look for his answer. :D

What if Rose couldn't make eagle noises?
Title: Re: the 'what if' game

Interesting.......however, the question was "what if Ranguvar Foeseeker had not died?" You changed it so that she wasn't killed fighting on the Goreleech, but she died anyway. That doesn't really answer the question, because she just dies anyways. NEXT QUESTION!!!!

What if Martin the Warrior had not recieved his awesome sword made from a falling star??
Title: Re: the 'what if' game

He would have fought Tsarmina with another weapon, and maybe lost the battle. :(
What would have happened if the above situation had occurred?
Title: Re: the 'what if' game
Post by: Nightfire on September 03, 2011, 06:41:48 PM
The world of Redwall Abbey would immideately crash out of existence without the beloved Martin the Warrior.

What if the woodlanders had not destroyed Kotir, living there instead of in Redwall Abbey?
Title: Re: the 'what if' game
Post by: Tiria Wildlough on September 04, 2011, 05:15:11 AM
I dunno...they might have renamed it Redwall, but if they hadn't destroyed Kotir, they might not have been able to oust Tsarmina from it, so the war might have been a lot longer.
What if Martin had not been captured by Badrang, and had been there to meet his father?

Then I would be very happy.  ;D I'm still lacking Doomwyte, Eulalia, Sable Quean, Marlfox, and one other...

What if Salamandastron didn't exist?

(anyone can answer, but I'm kinda hoping for one of James Gryphon's essays. ;) That was a hint, by the way.)
Title: Re: the 'what if' game
Post by: Tiria Wildlough on September 07, 2011, 09:37:14 AM
There would probably not be a book called Lord Brocktree, Martin's sword might not have been forged, Sunflash the Mace would have had nowhere to go, Lord Rawnblade wouldn't have helped to defeat Gabool, there would not be a book called Salamandastron, Lord Russano would not have arrived with help at the end of Taggerung, Lady Melesme would not have sent the Redwallers a drum, Tiria would not have gotten her armour, Maudie wouldn't have been sent to find Gorath the Flame...and that's all I know.
I'm no JG when it comes to essays, but it's clear that a lot of things depend on Salamandastron. ;)

What if Vizka Longtooth had killed Gorath?

(again, hoping for one of James Gryphon's essays)
Title: Re: the 'what if' game
Post by: James Gryphon on September 07, 2011, 08:47:59 PM
This one's not as long as some of them, but I hope it'll still be enjoyable. ;)

Well, the destiny of Luke the Warrior remains essentially the same. Sayna would still most likely be murdered by Vilu Daskar, and Luke would still go on his quest -- but having no heir, and knowing he would be the last member of his family line, Luke would take his sword with him on his journey. From there it would end up forever lost in the northern seas.

Some time after this, Badrang the Tyrant would begin to construct a dread fortress, Marshank, from which he would impose his rule over all of the northlands. Laterose of Noonvale and Grumm Trencher manage to help Brome and Felldoh escape from their ##:1162, but they are soon separated.

Rose and Grumm, unfortunately, stumble across the so-called "Highbeasts", a tribe of pygmy shrews, and are taken as slaves. Dinjer, the shrew queen's son, is eaten by a gannet, and the would-be questers are stuck in the shrew camp for many seasons.

Felldoh and Brome have somewhat better luck, and eventually, with the help of the local Rambling Rosehip Players, found the "Fur and Freedom Fighters". However, the group takes a massive blow when Felldoh is killed after making a single-pawed effort to kill Badrang. In the end, the Fighters attempted battle with Badrang's army. Badly outnumbered, they were easily crushed, and the few survivors were taken back into captivity.

With nobody left to oppose his rule, Badrang eventually finished building Marshank and set to work on expanding his empire. By the end of his life, he controlled practically all of the Eastern Coast, although his forces never got as far as Noonvale.

Within just a few seasons of his death, however, Badrang's infamous Empire began to collapse, as his bloodthirsty children and former subordinates descended into a violent civil war. By the time of The Bellmaker, all that remained of the Tyrant's rule were the crumbling ruins of Marshank itself.

The history of the Mossflower Woods, and of Redwall Abbey, can be found here (http://redwallabbey.com/forum/index.php?topic=543.msg21124#msg21124), since Martin never left the north in that timeline either.

What if badgers were evil, and all wildcats were good?

Zalamandastron wid be a vermin fort.

Title: Re: the 'what if' game
Post by: Icefire on September 08, 2011, 12:17:38 AM
It's possible (and in fact probable) that's it's worth would have been unknown and would have been wasted. Martin's sword would have never been reforged and he would have fought with a lesser weapon which possibly would have let him down in battle and he may then have been killed by Tsarmina.

What if Rose couldn't make eagle noises? (since no one answered last time I asked!)
Title: Re: the 'what if' game

Martin would've been eaten messily and gruesomely in front of the other slaves, and then the aforementioned from James' essay would have happened, minus the bit about Luke.  :'(
