Not aware if there's another topic for this and frankly we could always use a new one, so here we go!
What are you guys' thoughts on the Redwall Graphic Novel and do you think they should make more for the other books? It's still a possibility.
I personally haven't read it, though I've flipped through the copy that my library has and I must admit it looks kind of interesting.
I took a look at it one time, but that was years ago. From what I remember it was. . . Mostly accurate? Some changes for the sake of expressing in pictures, but still fairly close.
I wasn't a huge fan of it, for some reason, though I couldn't say why, now. Maybe it was because it was not what I had envisioned in my mind, and I didn't want it to change my own mind's image. I don't know.
As far as other books being made into graphic novels. . . Not sure what to say about that either. I'd certainly be game to take a look at them.
I think that Taggerung or one of the more seafaring books like Mariel (especially Mariel, who'm I kidding would look super cool as a comic.
But yeah, that's the same reason I had for not snagging it.
But if you say it was mostly accurate then I may just have to go find it somewhere.
I didn't even know there was a graphic novel version. :o
Yeah, it looks really cool!
It's very well-done, with beautiful artwork.
Alas, at this point I highly doubt we're going to see any other comic adaptations. I'm fairly certain this was a one-off.
Petitions exist...
It must not have gotten enough interest to warrant more editions.
Or it's because perhaps it wasn't promoted; seems like not a lot of you guys know about this.
Perhaps.
Now I feel like getting it to take a look again.

I'm someone who would be very receptive to a new graphic novel. But this was published a decade ago. The time has passed.
I think it just simply didn't receive enough interest, as the promotion was there. 2007 was the 20th anniversary of Redwall, and it was published for that, along with Eulalia! and the 20th anniversary edition.
There is some cool news now though: up until very recently it was not available in eBook format. If digital books are your thing, one can read it that way.
I think I remember enjoying the graphic novel. It's been so long since I read it. The style was darker than the animated version to be sure!
The animated version always seemed stiff and unappealing to me but a lot of people like it.

Oh, definitely. Come to think of it, that may be part of what put me off on it at first, me being about 10 at the time.
I must look out for this novel for sure. Would be a fun edition to my collection (which is only made up of the 21/22 novels, but oh well :D). Suspect it's not easy to find online, but you never know...
I think they sell it on the official store.

An ebook version of the graphic novel? I'm intrigued...
GO GET IT, TIGER.
Hmmm.... I can't find it on the Redwall Store. Has anyone else spotted it?
I haven't tried looking there myself but don't search the whole title.
Just part of it.
When I ordered from there, what I wanted did not come up until I only searched a fragment of the title.
Got this through the post today! :D Didn't know it was all in black and white, not that that matters.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
How is it?!
Yeah do you you like it?!
I haven't got to reading it yet! Want to finish another book first. Soooon.
Read it!
Not remembering everything that happened in the novel, I can't compare it properly and point out what was left out and changed, etc. I don't think it came out realllllly exciting in graphic novel form. I enjoyed the original book, but seems somehow this version didn't translate in such an intriguing way. Maybe I'm too familiar with the story to appreciate this version on its own?
To the imagery, I liked the traditional, charcoal-look. I think some of the panels don't read so well; if you're not already familiar with the story, a few scenes might be confusing... actually, read or not, still were confusing. Some of the sizing didn't seem quite right to me and varied within the comic: one time Silent Sam is tiiiny compared to Matthias. I think Matthias himself doesn't look quite right; maybe a bit wide and not youthful enough. Basil having lop-ears didn't seem right - too rabbit-ish. The foxes are a bit small compared to other animals that would be smaller. One scene I had to go back over because I got confused if it was the fox or Cluny in it. A big scene of (I think it was) Cluny whacking another vermin with his tail, didn't seem to look like it had much impact, despite the stretched panel and sound effect in large writing. Whilst mentioning the sound effects, I wasn't keen how they had been slapped on top of the traditional-looking pieces when they looked so digital. I obviously accept this is one guy's depiction and can't all be right to my eye! It's fine and dandy enough for the most part.
In spite of this, a lot of it really is no major problem, just little thoughts to extend my opinion of it as I was asked, and I am glad to add it to my collection, and certainly more graphic novel versions would have been/would be great to see!
Mmm! I still want to read it. In fact, that makes me want to read it more, so I can judge it for myself.
I am going to admit that I didn't know that Matthias was a teenager in the first book until...well, I think I was at least halfway done with Mattimeo.
I thought he was an adult.

This seems to be a recent misinterpretation. "Teenager" is a concept that didn't even exist until the past century. The TV series casts Matthias as a "young teenager," however in the novels, it's quite clear he's older. People seem to be forgetting shortly after he defeats Cluny, he gets married and has a son.
Hmm.
I think I still see him as teenagery age in the novel. This 'unlikely hero' being more relate-able to the target audience with his youth for the first book. Didn't the TV series have him at 13? I would say older than that, though. And no reason he couldn't get married 17, 18, 19, or whatever equivalent in this non-modern setting. :)
I actually find it easier to relate to characters older than me (I am a teen). I just...think it's hard to imagine kids my age being able to do these things.
Yeah, it is really... I just meant that Brian might've chosen Matthias to be a 'teenagery' age thinking it might be interesting to readers for him to be closer to the main target age, or something.

Which is why I said "young teenager." There is quite a dramatic gap between 13 and 17-19, which is more along the lines of "older teenager/young adult."
Well he could be 14 or 15 and get married. Don't forget that this is basically set in medieval England in quite a few ways so while that age would be somewhat unusual it wouldn't be unheard of. Throw in that they are mice and that could alter the age of marriage. Of course that's why I tend to use equivalent age, while they may be the equivalent of 17 they could actually be eight to twelve seasons old. Throw in that animals speed through adolescence then slow down somewhat and that could explain quite a lot. As is I am definitely favoring him being the equivalent of 16 or 17 perhaps going to 22. He'd likely be considered an adult however he also probably wouldn't have full duties yet.
Although it takes out a lot of the plot, I adore it mostly for the art. There's some really awesome panels!
Speaking of other redwall books, the cookbook has amazing art too; its considerably softer and more cutesy.
Cutesy and Redwall just...should stay separate. For a cookbook, though, I guess it's fine. Don't wanna look at some ghastly faces while you make muffins. That'd be odd.
And slightly cool.
Actually, no, just cool.
I read the graphic novel even before I read the actual book.
I read the book first, but I also have the graphic novel. It's pretty neat.

I read the Graphic novel in either 2016 or 2017 and then I read the actual book in early 2019.
