Which do you think were better in the books?
I liked them both, but I'd have to say that river otters were my favorite.
I wish Sea otters had been mentioned more though River otters are my firm favourite.

While I don't mind the sea otters, I really like Keyla, Skipper, Tagg, Grath, and Inbar, so that's why river otters got my main vote.
Personally, I loved the River Otters the best.

I had to stop and think who actually was a river otter and who was a sea otter. Sea otters are far more prevalent. Given that Keyla and Grath are river otters, well, river otters get the vote. :)

Hard choice! I get the impression sea otters are more rough around the edges than river otters, and go on more or wider-ranging adventures. Kroova was a sea otter, so they got my vote. XD
I don't think Shogg was ever named a sea otter or a river otter specifically, I think he could really be either...

I'm a river otter fan, they were friendly. Sea otters were a bit too rough for my taste (take the Rogue Crew as a very far-sided example). The river otters just seemed to have a better hold on themselves.
I like that about them but they just weren't all warlike.

River otters got my vote, btw. I like the sea otters a lot, but I just like the river otters a little bit more. Besides, Skipper has always had a place on my list of favorite characters.

There seems to be two very strong camps....heaven forbid you find yourself on the wrong side in the other camp! :D
River otters. So many of the Skippers were river otters. And Rillflag, Filorn, Mhera and Deyna were all river otters. Then, correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Keyla a river otter? Folgrim? Bragoon?
This is going to sound off, but it... might just come down to statistics for me. There were awesome sea otters. Leatho Shellhound and all of the otters of Green Isle are great characters. But there are just so many more river otters in the books that the number of wonderfully-written characters I'd have to vote against by favoring the sea otters far outweighs the number of characters I'd have to vote against by favoring the river otters.

A very broad generalization, but I felt the river otters were less predictable as characters than the sea otters. That made them more interesting.

Usaully because there aren't any seas near Redwall.
But the otters always go down to the sea in the summer I think.

The otters living at Redwall are often river otters, given the abbey is near streams and the abbey has a pond. The sea otters only visit. You see someone named "Skipper" (usually a different one every book) well you at least know he/she is a sea otter. Haven't seen a river otter named Skipper yet. :) Hope that helps.

I think the reason I chose sea otters was because of the otters in High Rhulain like Banya(of course!), Leatho, and Big Collen.

I'm not sure if I could choose between river otters and sea otters. Both species have some really awesome characters that I really enjoy reading about. The first river otter that pops into my head is Mask, and the first sea otter is Leatho Shellhound, who are both amazing characters, and there are many others that I haven't mentioned. So I don't think I could choose between the two.
Guys, come on. I have a hard enough time picking my favorite species, let alone subspecies!
A few of my favorite otters never had their subspecies specified- Keyla, Tullgrew, Shogg, Elachiam and Borrakul from Marlfox, Flandor, Inbar Trueflight, Zaran.
I haven't read Rogue Crew yet, but I read High Rhulain. Leatho's cool, but I especially love the Galedeeps- Kolun, Lorgo, Finnbarr, Deedero and Toobil. Also, there's Brogalaw, skipper of a sea otter holt from Lord Brocktree. (You should all be ashamed of yourselves for leaving him out!) And of course, Kroova and Sleeve.
But river otters just appear more often. As such, there's a ton of awesome ones. We have Winifred, Warthorn, Folgrim, Tungro, Riverwyte, Starwort and Marigold, pretty much every Skipper that ever lived, Rab and Iris, Bragoon, Thrugg and Thrugann, Churk. I'm probably forgetting a few hundred.
So, my conclusion:
Can't we all just agree that otters are the best and throw a big Hullabaloo?
*Seriously, tho. Brogalaw. Since no one's mentioned him, Imma vote for the Sea Otters*
But I still think we should just throw a Hullabaloo and get along. :) I'll bring the 'otroot!

Nice summary Shieldmaiden, you are right that I failed to remmeber Brogalaw. Now that you bring him up though it sparks up my memory of that worthy otter.
I my self am all round otter fan, but these topics help us discuss about the victories and loses (as in good or bad aspects) of both Sea and River otters.

@ Leatho- To me, the sub-species seem pretty much the same. Sea Otters tend to be wilder, but they aren't all like that. Of course, I'm in the process of re-reading,so I could be wrong. *Though if I recall correctly, there seemed to be tension between the two races- at least in High Rhulain.
