Title: Owl City!
Post by: Kitsune on June 08, 2013, 03:33:57 PM
I didn't see a topic like this, so.....
Anybody here like Owl City? I know Rainy does.

Yes, but I like Owl City more than Rainy.  Rainy's more into watering flowers with his watering can.  ;)

I'm a pretty big fan of Owl City. I own four albums, multiple singles, two Owl City T-shirts, and a mini-poster of Adam Young. I think I've officially crossed the line from fan to fanatic.  ::)

LUCKY!!!!  I only own TMS and ATBAB!  I don't even have a T-shirt or a poster!  *Sigh*  Well, I guess that goes on me Christmas list!  ;)
Anyway, which albums do you own?  (I am, of course, including Of June as an album, even though it's called an EP.  It's long enough to be an album for me ;))  Also, which singles do you own?

Well, I used to be on Goggle+, but no one else I knew was on there, so I got off.  ;)  And I follow Owl City on Twitter, (https://twitter.com/owlcity) even though I don't have an account.  I just kinda stalk the Twitter page, lol.  Also, I read his blog, (http://www.ayoungblog.com/) which unfortunately is down at the moment.  And finally, I look at his Instagram (http://instagram.com/owlcityofficial) from time to time, mainly because he takes really good pictures.  :P  Yeah, I guess you could call me a fan.  ;)

I own Of June (I didn't know this was considered an EP! I always thought it was an album.), Maybe I'm Dreaming, Ocean Eyes, and All Things Bright and Beautiful. As far as singles (though some of them are just songs off the deluxe album editions), I own...

- Hot Air Balloon
- How I Became the Sea
- To the Sky
- Speed of Love (not a single, but my favorite off of The Midsummer Station)
- Oreo Wonderfilled Song (this is available for free download on the official Oreo website)
- Garden Party (this is actually a cover of a '70s song, which was originally pretty great, but I of course like Owl City's version better)

Well, technically, Owl City's been around since he was born in 1986, but if you're talking about the project, I believe he started it in 2007.  At least, that's when he put out Of June (if I'm correct, that is).  Funny little fact for ya:  Adam Young started Owl City by putting music on MySpace.  He wasn't really a band, just a kid in his basement making music.  Kinda cool (at least, for me).

Nice!  Have you seen the music video for that?  It's not my favourite (my favourite is probably either Deer in the Headlights or Early Birdie (don't ask me why I like Early Birdie so much, it's a long story :P), but I still like it quite a bit!
Title: Re: Owl City!

Owl City (or Adam Young) is pure pop music, with a lot of auto-tune.  I see auto-tune as simply a gimmick to cover up for untrained singing because it basically gives you a computerized voice.  The songs that I do listen to from time to time are "To the Sky" and "Fireflies".  Other than that, not too interested in Mr. Young's stuff.
Title: Re: Owl City!
Post by: Rainshadow on June 15, 2013, 12:53:34 AM
Actually, if you listen to the songs, his voice doesn't sound at all computerized.  There are some occasions where there'll be a slip-up, but most of the time, he just uses enough to cover up the missed notes.  Not too much to make himself sound inhuman.  (Unhuman?  Inhuman?  Eh, spell check ain't workin' too well for me.)  And as for actually using auto-tune, from what I've heard, many musicians use it nowadays (some a bit TOO much), so he had to use it to keep up with the others.  Sure, it could be thought of as a form of 'cheating', but I don't view it that way.  Eh, that's just my opinion though.
Title: Re: Owl City!
Post by: Kitsune on June 15, 2013, 01:36:44 AM
Inhuman is used to describe an act that is so extreme that it seems unpossible for a human. Example: Hitler's ideas were just inhuman!

Unhuman is something that is not a person's. Example: His digitalized voice was robotic and very unhuman.

.....or so I think. ;D

Actually, Owl City's genre is more suitably classified as Electronic.

Yes, he does use a bit of autotune, but his pure natural voice is quite nice, too. While I've never had the privilege of going to an actual Owl City concert, I've seen videos of him performing live, and he sounds fine to me.

(By the way, Lutra, I love your profile picture! I'm a fan of the original Franklin TV series.)

I guess I'm going to have to see if there's a more natural sounding Adam Young out there somewhere.  I think the only reason auto-tune became a big hit is because Cher made it a big hit with "Believe". ;)  Lets see how many of these kids can sing when a computer doesn't fix all the problems.

And yes, Oricono, Franklin does rock, at least the original anyway. :)

Well, if you want a LIVE song (one of my favourites, actually (so purdyful! :') )), then here ya go:

It definitely sounds natural, and actually, at one part, it sounds like he was about ready to cry.  But yeah, I believe this song is about a girlfriend of his that he really loved, but she moved away for college and they lost touch.  Or something along those lines.  Quite a few people claim that Annemarie died, but no, she just moved to some out of state college or something like that.  It's still a very pretty song, though.  And it shows off some pretty darn amazing piano skills!  Man!  If only I could play that well!  And on that piano.  ;)  Those keys are so clean and new-looking as compared to my piano.  They keys are all chipped and dying lol.  And my piano is pretty battered and scratched up (it's really old ;)).

I don't mind some auto tune, but it gets weird if there's a lot.

Ah, here's a vid that most likely has no auto-tune in it:

I have no idea why, but I crack up whenever I listen to it.  :P  (And yes, this is actually Owl City... well, Adam Young.  Apparently, he just recently shaved his head.)

I know!  I loved his long hair!  (Lol, though my sister would tease me that I only got my hair cut so short so I could look like him.  ::))  He just recently almost grew it out to the longer length, but I guess he wanted it short for the summer or something.
And yes, those glasses are quite awesome.  ;D

Lol!  Yeah, when I talk about Owl City to people and tell them that his actual name is Adam Young, they're like, "Um, why doesn't he just go by Adam Young then?"  I say, "I dunno.", but what I mean is, "BECAUSE IT'S AWESOME AND COOL AND MYSTERIOUS, THAT'S WHY!"  :P

I know, I do quite enjoy the live versions of most of his songs (though, sometimes I quite enjoy the studio version), but in order to keep up with the pop stars of this generation, he has to step up his game.  It's quite sad, really, that people have to turn to 'cheating' to keep up with the crowd.  :(  Still, I enjoy Owl City for the music and the creativity, not the fact that he may be 'cheating' by using auto-tune.

I enjoy a couple of the songs he did before he released Fireflys and did a song with Carly Rae Jepsen. :P He does have a few good songs, though I prefer The Postal Service, to whom Owl City owe quite a bit too.

Yay!  ;D  And that's not even his best song (in my opinion)!  My personal favourites are probably Umbrella Beach, Early Birdie, To the Sky, Paper Tigers, I Hope You Think of Me (or at least, what I've heard from that (ugh, why won't he release the full song in studio?  D: )), and a few others that I can't think of at the moment.
Random fact:  Did anyone know that yesterday (July 5th) was Mr. Young's 27th birthday?
And another random fact:  Apparently, on July 30th, he's gonna release an acoustic Midsummer Station EP, featuring Good Time, Shooting Star, Gold, and two unreleased tracks.  I sincerely hope those two are I Hope You Think of Me and Hey Anna!

And as for the hair, I don't know why, but I really like that look!  To me, his hair looks best in this pic:

How did you get them so quickly?!  I've known about Owl City since last summer, and I only have two albums and a couple extra songs from the movies!  :o

Ooh!  Did anyone hear the news?  Apparently, at the end of the month (July 30th, to be exact), he's releasing a new EP.  It's gonna be an acoustic The Midsummer Station EP, with acoustic Shooting Star, Gold, and Good Time, as well as...  Drum roll please...

THE FULL STUDIO-RECORDED SONGS, HEY ANNA AND I HOPE YOU THINK OF ME!!!!!!!!!!!!  *Cheers*  Finally we'll get to hear the studio versions of the songs!  :D  It's only been over a year since he released the teasers!  ::)

EDIT:  Oh, by the way, apparently Live it Up (from the Smurfs 2) was released today, so yay!  We got a new Owl City song today!  :D

Heard it... like... three times already.  Pretty darn good, if I do say so myself!  But then again, that might be because I've never heard it before today (well, except for that short little Instagram vid that he was singing along to), so any new Owl City song is bound to be nice, simply 'cause it's new!  ;)  (If I'm rambling, sorry, I need to sleep.  :P)

He actually have over 78 now.

And to answer how I got them all, I downloaded them in mp3 here (http://www.mp3ye.eu).

The search engine doesn't work there, so I'll post the list of the songs, and you just have to type this: "(Owl City Song Title) owl city mp3ye.eu" in googl(or whatever you use).

Owl City Songs
1. Air Traffic
2. Alligator Sky
3. Angels
4. Beautiful Mystery
5. Bombshell Blonde
6. Butterfly Wings
7. Captains and Cruise Ships

'26. He is We' should be '26. All About Us'.  ;)  Oh, and '55. Sky Sailing' is actually another project of his, not a song.  ;)  And I don't believe I've ever heard '75. When was the Last Time?'.  Could it possibly have been 'When Can I See You Again'?

What is your favourite Owl City song?
Title: Re: Owl City!
Post by: Rainshadow on July 21, 2013, 02:49:43 PM
That's a cruel question.  ;)  Um, if I had to pick, probably either Early Birdie, In Christ Alone, If My Heart Was a House, Bright Eyes, Lonely Lullaby, To the Sky, Swimming in Miami, Designer Skyline, Paper Tigers, Beautiful Mystery, Umbrella Beach, Alligator Sky (no rap version), Air Traffic, or The Airway.  (Yes, I'm a big fan of the oldies.  ;))

Yes, this is what happens when someone asks me which Owl City song is my favourite.  :P

Alligator Sky is absolutely awesome! Except for the rap edit, which I didn't take.

I like the rap part of Alligator Sky. I didn't at first, but the more I listened to it, the more it grew on me. Now I sing along with it every time.

Update: I recently bought Lonely Lullaby and Gold, and I now have an extreme obsession with Silhouette and Paper Tigers.

 Story of my life.  ;)

And as for Alligator Sky, I love the rap in it, I just like the non-rap one more.  The tune and the lyrics in the verses are great!  And I, for some reason, find the music video to be one of my favourites.

EDIT:  Not the best version, but I found I Hope You Think of Me!  Should make me stay a little sane whilst I wait for the 30th.  ;)

And while I'm at it, I may as well post the good version of Hey Anna.

  Sadly, that's the best I can find quality-wise.  :-\

I fail to see what is so cool about owl City. %75 of all my friends listen to them, but why are they considered so cool? There just another rock band, or whatever style. Why doesn't everybody listen to people like Above & beyond, Tiesto, DeaMau5 and, of course, the Cosmic Gate? There style of music are so much cooler that Owl City's in my opinion. Why doesn't Trance music take the craze for a while?

Wow, so many questions! ;D

He, not they.  ;)  And I suppose it just depends on the person.  For me, I like pop music, (some) hip hop, (some) rock, (some) electronic, and instrumental, not necessarily trance.  But that's just me.  There are a bunch of people who like trance music, I'm sure, just not a lot of them are on this forum.

So I leave for two weeks, and when I come back I see that there are folks who think Owl City is uncool? I'm shocked! Haha, that's okay, we all like different kinds of music.

Anyway, I finally got my paws on the full copy of The Midsummer Station! I'd actually never heard a few of the songs the whole way through, so it was a real treat for me to finally do so.  :D

From what I've heard, Mr. Young started off by posting his music on Myspace, and apparently people liked it.  He really took off when he made Fireflies, though.  Not sure why, but that's one of the most popular songs.  I mean, I like it, but it's not my favourite.  I like his sad, slow songs more, like Lonely Lullaby and Silhouette (which I'm learning how to play on the piano!  So fun!  :D).

Lol, I wouldn't blame you if you played piano mainly for Owl City songs.  I myself have already learned two (Honey and the Bee, which I played at a recital, and Silhouette, which I've almost learned.  I've got a good portion of it memorized from just playing it, lol.  :P), and I printed off sheet music for Meteor Shower because I find that song very pretty.  ;D
You can almost play Silhouette?! I'm so jealous! :D That is probably my favorite song by them!!  ;D It's really pretty but it's really sad too...

I know!  I saw sheet music for it online and, seeing as it has a great piano part, decided to print it off.  It's pretty hard, but sounds so cool!  There's a very deep left hand, and a delicate, chord-filled right hand.  So awesome!  :D

I feel like a failure as a musician... But then, it's cool to see people who really love playing music. Even if I don't love to play it, I love to see people who do, because they are 'the music makers and the dreamers of dreams'. So cool! *Admiration*

  Revive!

Oh look, Owl City himself posted new music on his blog! (http://www.ayoungblog.com/post/80431167535)  Lol, the title of the song is Floppy Fish.  Odd.  It sounds cool, though!  And I heard a rumor that he might be releasing either news or a song on April eighth.  On his Instagram he said something about SOON and said "040814", which all of the people I've seen are thinking is a date.  Then he said "041514", which I'm thinking is the fifteenth of April.  So, possibly new music (besides Floppy Fish) soon?

Well, there's a new-ish song (it came out last month, if I remember correctly) that features Lindsey Stirling.

From what I've heard, they're currently making a music video for it, so I'm pretty excited about that.  :D  Also, I read that there's mostly gonna be EPs from Owl City this year, and that we might maybe possibly have a small chance of getting one around June.  (At least, that's what he said in the tags of a post on his blog.)

Yep!  To the Sky was used in Legend of the Guardians: Owls of Ga'Hoole.

Also, new song!  It's called Wolf Bite, and it's from the Ultraviolet EP that'll be released on the 27th.  Yay!

I love Owl City! Adam is my favorite pop artist and Christian singer, too! He has a nice voice, and his songs are generally inspirational. They just kind of pick me up and put me on cloud 8. Yup. They make me feel happy.

I wholeheartedly agree.  Adam's music is something that I can listen to when I'm down and it's familiar enough that it just lifts my spirits and makes me happy again.  And the fact that he gave away a free song for Christmas is pretty awesome, too.  ^-^  (In case anyone didn't know, he sent out Kiss Me Babe, It's Christmas Time to everyone on his email list before it was on iTunes.  So, yeah, I got it for free, and that was awesome.  ;D)

I am completely OBSESSED!!! Searching Pinterest for Owl City quotes, loving all Owl City songs (okay, except for Galaxies, it is rather repetitive of a phrase I don't appreciate), this guy I know has taken upon him to mentor me in being an Owl City fan, I am staying up late listening to Owl City, man, if I could just go to an Owl City concert I could die happy.

Now you know how I feel.  ;D

Oh, by the way, guys, there's a bunch of random Owl City songs that Iunno if y'all've heard yet:

Listen to What the Man Said

  If I Stand

Those are two covers, the first being from The Art of Paul McCartney album, and the second is just a cover he did of Rich Mullins' song; Adam just randomly posted it to SoundCloud a week or two ago.

And these next two are pretty old (October for the two of them, I believe?), but they're two collabs that aren't really part of any album or EP or anything:

You're Not Alone (feat. Britt Nicole)

  Tokyo (feat. SEKAI NO OWARI)

Words cannot express how much I like Tokyo and its visualizer.  :D

Honestly, words can not express how much this music has changed my life. It's something that I just love so much. I've been listening to his music for years, like since 2009. Everyone here has said how much they like his style already and so I guess it would be obvious if I said it, but his music is something that most peoplebdont understand because it's different.

*Revive!*
(I'm still inactive, by the way, but I just need to spout out my random Owl City discoveries/thoughts.)

It looks like, from their website, Owl City is planning on releasing a new album in 2015 or 16!!! And there are rumors of a worldwide tour at the end of 2016 which will be FREAKIN' AWESOME if it happens!! I cannot describe my happiness! But I think I'm getting an earache from listening to so much music with headphones, oh well, small price to pay. ;D

My favorite songs (in no particular order):
-Metropolis
-You're Not Alone
-How Deep The Father's Love For Us
-Deer In The Headlights
-This Isn't The End
-Hospital Flowers
-Ummm, aaaand...When Can I See You Again. There we go.

Great, maybe this time I can actually see him in concert! Last time he went on tour he came to a city near me but I was 15 and my parents didn't really want me to go...

Of course, I don't know how I feel about his new album. I've only heard a few songs, and I liked about half of them and wasn't sure about the rest. He's definitely exploring new sounds.

Yeah, some of his new ones aren't as great as his older ones. I really like Lucid Dream, New York City, and Cloud Nine, though.

Anyway, the Artist Presale is about to start right now! If you use the code "CLOUDNINE" you can get tickets a few days early. The general sale starts on April 27th.
