Title: What do redwallers wear in the winter to keep warm?
Post by: Edraithel on May 07, 2014, 06:12:04 AM
I was wondering since a basic way of staying warm in medieval times was to wear fur or fur lined things but seeing as the people of redwall are animals it's barbaric to them to wear animal skins. So what do you think they would wear in the winter time to stay warm? To me mere cloaks and linen wouldn't cut it.

...Heavy cloaks? Thick woven linen? Keep in mind that they have fur lining no matter what they wear. Animals are built to endure cold weather without clothes- Humans aren't.

They also might have many fireplaces that are kept running all day.

What Rus said ^^^

They probably have thick linen or some source of thick clothing like cotton or such.

Do Redwall creatures wear shoes? 'Cause their footpaws might get cold.

We know that at least in the animated series they do since they were sandals and could easily change them to shoes. I don't really imagine them wearing shoes though.

In the animated series, Winifred the otter wasn't even wearing. . . anything. :P
So, you could conclude that they simply don't need it like we do.
And clothes would drag otters down when they go into water.

If they did wear thick sock-like things, wouldn't they get soggy in winter?

Do you ever see animals running around in clothes outside when it's cold out?  :P They don't need it, they're covered in fur! The reason we wear fur is because it's quite warm due to the fact that it holds heat extremely well. If their bodies are fur, then it only follows that they'd be warm. Now they are portrayed as being susceptible to the cold, but only to a certain extent.

The length of the hairs that make up fur tend to change seasonally to allow the creature with said fur to be relatively comfortable in any given temperature, which would explain why they generally don't need to change what they're wearing beyond adding or reducing some material.

Aye. Matthias in Redwall had sandals that were too big, and in Loamhedge Bragoon and Saro baked the Foremole's sandals in a loaf of bread.

Heavy cloaks, is my thinking. And, Dan, we're talking Redwall...Not real life. No offense meant. But, really, anything can happen in Redwall!

It's a bummer that they don't wear fur cause it looks so cool. Well some vermin where fur/hides of their enemies.

Forgive me if I am wrong, but isn't there some instance where a character is mentioned as shedding their winter coat?  If my memory serves, it was either a hare or a vermin- perhaps one of the wolverines?

Well the hares in Lord Brocktree have patchcoats because their shedding and changing the color of their coats.

Well, besides the hares, I do remember some from Rakkety Tam. I'm pretty sure the white-furred vermin are really just regular vermin with winter coats.

The foxes were actual arctic foxes (whose fur does change to a brownish color in the summer) not red foxes. However, the ermine were just stoats in their winter fur. Too bad there weren't any lemmings

Animals have fur, as others have said, so I assume any sort of clothes they wear are merely for decoration. Also, woodlanders don't wear fur cloaks because you have to kill animals to get fur and woodlanders don't do that. Woodlanders would probably think of fur cloaks as barbaric and cruel...

The redwallers probably had cloaks, coats, etc.

I assume that any sort of clothes were purely for decoration. The moles and the mice might've needed something to keep warm, but most animals would not have a problem surviving the cold. (That is, of course, assuming that the animals in Redwall are like animals on Earth)

You know I'm tired when I almost answer "fur" to the question, and then sit back and realize the answer could potentially be "they wear nothing" as they are already covered in fur and supposedly are plenty warm.   They'll just be like Winifred and walk in the nude. ;)

Now I can't stop staring; thanks a lot, Lutra. ::) ;D Actually, I'm more curious as to how her right foot got into that position. . . :P Looks painful. (Need some ice, Winifred?) :P

As to the topic, I feel the question "Do they need to keep warm" should be answered before "What do they wear?". I feel like some creatures might need to stay warm, or some don't actually need to stay warm like others.
Also, clothes might not be only meant for warmth or protection, but might also serve as a means of chastity, assuming they are tempted as humans are. ( :P )

I think more compact and thicker snuggies, because thats what they wear normally (Please see what do redwallers where to get this)

Most animals shed so I don't see why they couldn't have fur coats.

All they would have to do is collect the fur off the floor or something.

As for keeping warm that shouldn't be too much of a problem, probably cotton or something.

Yes, but the fur that the animals shed couldn't be made into a coat. It would just fall apart. (Unless they have sheep in the Redwall world, but I highly doubt that)

Probably anything they had was made from plants, like cotton. Though I don't think they had cotton in Europe before to discovery of the Americas.

I think that it says members of the rogue crew wore vermin pelts, and I know that many vermin leaders wore fur pelts.

Habits? they may not have wool, but they have linen and maybe cotton, but they also have fur. Check out Chibb's outfit on one of the chapter illustrations in Mossflower.

Since it takes place in England I like to think they would have used Cotton Grass as their source of fiber since they didn't have access to wool etc. Cotton Grass was used in medieval times not only to create fabric, but also to make a wide variety of textiles. I think fire, fur and good ol'October Ale helps a great deal too :)
