Title: School Returneth!
Post by: Matthias720 on August 25, 2011, 02:17:35 AM
All across North America (and other continents, I suspect) school/college is either starting or about to start. What are you looking forward to, and what do you dread?

Personally, I'm wrapping up a Associate's Degree in small business this semester. It's both exciting and slightly nerve-wracking.

I'm the teacher not the student....

I'd like to continue to see parent participation in their students successes and help them through their trying times.  I'd like a greater sense of respect in my classroom, and if it goes like last year, it won't be half bad. :)  A couple of students I'll just really have to keep my eye on what they do because they are definitely a challenge!

I'm going into my second year of college; I'm double-majoring in two computers majors.  I'm looking forward to the fact that 3 out of the 4 classes I'm taking are computer-related.  I'm NOT looking forward to three-hour long class periods (I will have two of them, once a week each) or the difficulty of chemistry.

I'm looking forward to school. I'm not sure what I'm not looking forward to.

Huh. You know I'm homeschooled, which means that we can work even on really-super heavy days of snow. I usually finish school for the year ahead of all of the public schools. I'm looking forward to Science and English, but not Math. Science, because I just love science, English, because I know it all already, so it'll be easy, and Math I'm not looking forward to, becasue it's the year I start to learn Algebra.  >:(

Agh, I start algebra this year, too. :P I'm going into 7th grade. I'm kind of excited to start school and see all my friends again, although I'm not excited for P.E., or math.

^ That's nuts you guys start algebra so early.  Sign of the global times I guess...I didn't remember seeing algebra until I got to high school.  One of my cousins is going into 8th grade and needed help.  I even had a bit of trouble with some of the questions!  :-X  What do you take by high school then...advanced calculus or are you done?

Same here, it doesn't matter what the weathers like. I'm starting pre-algebra this year too, but I've already taken Geometry (Go figure ::)) in which we went over some of it and I've looked though the book and it doesn't look too hard.

Math was made for me to doodle, English is boring, so I do it, then forget it as soon as can. Art and music is FUN! My favorite part of school is drawing mice, squirrels and otters on the back of my paper.

As a student I'm finishing up my associates at a community college and gearing up for the big leagues after - getting financial aid, letters of recommendation, stuff like that. As a teacher, the Sunday school semester is starting up at my church and I hear I'm getting more students, which is always nice. Last year I only had two. XD

Like Lutra, I'm the teacher not the student. I'm looking forward to playing more English games with my little kids and hopefully having more conversations with the high schoolers. Most of my interactions with my older kids go something like this:
Me: Good morning!
Student: *Giggles, says good morning in Japanese and runs away*
Me: :'(

I'd like to change that!

Ah, back to school time. I remember those days...

Considering I'm not in school any more, what I'm most looking forward to is the end of October. That's when farmers market ends and I will have two day weekends rather than only Sunday off. I will also be working less than 60-70 hours a week once frost hits sometime in October and a lot of our crops stop producing. Unlike just about the rest of the non-farming world, things slow down in the fall and winter for me. It's lovely.

Its always awesome to buy local whenever possible.  Farmer's markets are good for that. :)

Just make sure you ask the vendors where their produce comes from. At the main farmers market we sell at, 95% of the vendors get their produce from California :/ There's no restriction on whether or not you have to be a grower at this particular market. We're one of two vendors who grow all of our produce ourselves. Because we're among the few actual farmers at the farmers market, our prices are higher because we have to support ourselves on our sales, rather than buying the stuff wholesale and selling it for super cheap just to get some extra cash like the rest of the folks there. It helps that we're the only organic vendor, but people still ask why our prices are so high. We have to explain that they're actually on par with overall market value, but they seem expensive because everyone else is so dirt cheap. If you're going to be cheap about something, don't be cheap about your food. In the long run, you'll pay for it, as will everyone else on the planet.

Stepping off my soapbox now...

*coughs*

So, school, eh?  :D

WOW! Two of the hardest days of my life just happened!

No, the two classes I have this semester aren't that difficult. It's the fact that I work at the same college I attend, and I just spent the past 48 hours helping dozens of people reset their email passwords to conform to the latest security settings. I must have rest over 150 passwords. O_O

My mind is now numb. *faints*

Let me see if I can put all this down...

I have three chapters of a classic to read, write a report on the author due Thursday, work due the same day for marine biology, music theory work sheets and reading, annotate a few poems that I cannot get anything out of and research around for some of that, read eight passages of scripture in Genesis and write a few paragraphs about allusions for each, a quiz on vocabulary and Greek and Latin roots, a test for world history, five math lessons, four algebra problem sets, more literature to read, biology and a test for that.
Besides all that school, I'm working with the CryENGINE 3 SDK Editor, writing a novel, working in Blender, Gimp and Photoscape, Civ3Q Editor and juggling around with a few ideas for some activist compilation work.
I feel a little bit swamped.

All the students were bouncy with energy the first day back...very trying day trying to explain rules and policies when they won't stop talking.
