Title: The Arena OOC
Post by: James Gryphon on January 14, 2015, 04:56:21 PM
Talked things over with Faiy, and we're making a slight change. The Arena (http://redwallabbey.com/forum/index.php?topic=7294.0) is going to reside in Forum Games (http://redwallabbey.com/forum/index.php?board=2).

Here, though, you can make comments about the game -- how things are going, etc. Spectators especially are welcome.

Wanted to comment on the PPing thing -- I think you have to phrase it as "so-and-so attempts to hit so-and-so with the blower", or "so-and-so swings their shovel at so-and-so", like in a RP. You can't just say that your attack hits or does damage, though.

Oh and in response to Sunpaws question about the wand, That is for you to find out.  ;D You have to figure out how it works (Just remember that I control all magic in the game so you cannot say weather or not your attempts succeeded.)  ;D
Title: Re: The Arena OOC
Post by: Tiria_Wildlough on January 14, 2015, 11:17:46 PM
so I would say like,

*waves the wand trying to grow a flower*

Then what would happen?
Title: Re: The Arena OOC
Post by: Faiyloe on January 14, 2015, 11:55:29 PM
Then I would say weather it worked or not and what happens as a result of your attempt.

Can we pretty much do anything we want? (Within reason, of course.) :P

Yup, your course of action is up to you, within reason and within the rules of course.

Um, how would one fight with silly putty?
Title: Re: The Arena OOC
Post by: Izeroth on January 15, 2015, 04:05:50 AM
Well, you could try to stuff it into someone's mouth... Or you could always use it to block a magical attack, creating magic silly putty in the process. Silly putty golems  ;D A giant silly putty blob that swallows everything, including you! ;D Well, it'd be fun for the audience at least.

Sorry to post so much, but I had an idea. If someone is defeated, can we use thumbs up and thumbs down to decide whether they live or die?

So how do we determine if a player is eliminated or not? Just by Faiyloe's judgment?
Title: Re: The Arena OOC
Post by: Faiyloe on January 15, 2015, 04:53:11 PM
Basically yes. If they are in a situation in which they cant get out of, are properly cornered and no way of escape then they are out. If they have received enough hits etc... then they are out. For example if a player is covered in shaving cream from head to toe and is drowning in the ball pit then I would take them out.

Title: Re: The Arena OOC
Post by: Faiyloe on January 15, 2015, 06:49:47 PM
@ Skarzs: Wait for them to react. If they don't react in a decent amount of time I will play the out come for them.

@ Soren: Absolutely that is what the mirrors are for.  ;D

Thanks Faiyloe and whoever sent me the gift :D When does my gun run out of water and need to filled again?
Title: Re: The Arena OOC
Post by: Faiyloe on January 16, 2015, 05:41:25 AM
Well now You don't have to re fill it you just have to wait for it to recharge itself. Just use your better judgement as to how long it takes but I would say that when fully charged it can hold about the amount of water found in a large water bottle. Not the little store bought disposable ones but the refillable kind.   ;D

Would it be PPing if we break or use things in the arena? It's not controlling other people's characters, but I wanted to ask.
Title: Re: The Arena OOC
Post by: Faiyloe on January 21, 2015, 02:47:54 AM
go ahead, just so long as you don't say that there are things in the arena that I didn't already say where there like saying that there is a refrigerator or a sandwich, or a couch. (It is ok to specify on the stuff in the Jungle gym if it makes sense to be there same with the other arias in the arena)

With accessories like that magic wand, who needs enemies? It seems the best use of it would be to give it to one of your opponents and watch them kill themselves with it.
Title: Re: The Arena OOC
Post by: Faiyloe on January 21, 2015, 04:39:59 AM
Unless you learn how to control it, there is a set way, until then however I will use a random generator to determine if the out come of your attempts are good neutral or bad. Oh and Dell is out so I have just reset the poll. Much good all Dell's vote's did him...  ;D :P
Title: Re: The Arena OOC
Post by: LT Sandpaw on January 21, 2015, 02:46:19 PM

Is the wand like an opposite gun where if you try to do something with it, it does the reverse because that would be really cool.
Title: Re: The Arena OOC
Post by: Faiyloe on January 21, 2015, 03:26:53 PM
Nope. it's not opposite, just random. some times it will do something useful for the user and some times it will do something bad, and some times it will do something neutral.
Title: Re: The Arena OOC

@Sam: Yes. I've noticed x)
Title: Re: The Arena OOC

Title: Re: The Arena OOC
Post by: James Gryphon on March 07, 2015, 04:47:41 AM
The transmogrifier gun should be as good, but I admit the wand does seem to have more potential than most other people's tools.

Still, that's the tradeoff -- just go back one page, and you can see everyone talking about how useless it was.

Title: Re: The Arena OOC

before that you has sustained several hits from a shovel and shots from Sky's water gun and shaving cream to the face. the rubber bands where just what brought you over the top. By them selves they would not have been enough to take you out.

And really it was a level nine. If it had been a level eight then I might have been able to just squeeze you threw but then anything else even the slightest thing would have taken you out any way... If you where wondering I have been using a random number generator with numbers on a scale of 1 to 10 to determine the severity of the magic attacks.

Just two left.

Sky's a walking arsenal, but I believe that the transmogrifier gun, if used correctly, is the single strongest item in the game. Both players should have a fair chance.
Title: Re: The Arena OOC

The final two!  ;D Part of the reason I think Russa has survived so long is that she has kept out of the reach of every other player and let them eliminate each other for her.  ;D

Sky was deadly without the wand, almost unstoppable with it. I admire Sam for taking it out, but I don't think Russa has the fire power.

If there is a next round I don't think there should be something as overpowered as the wand. It takes away all need for strategy and imaginative thinking once you've cracked it.

It's like Overlord's Orders; it's all about the creativity. Sky has practically a ton of weapons, but the gun can turn all of them against her. I like Sky's position, but with some creativity I like Russa's even better -- and that's even if Sky can use the wand. If it's broken for good, that's just icing on the cake.

If there is a next round I don't think there should be something as overpowered as the wand. It takes away all need for strategy and imaginative thinking once you've cracked it.

You have got to remember for a while there it tended to back fire on the user.  ;) It is up to the host weather they wan't to include something like a wand or not.

I realize that. But it still isn't quite as fun when you are basically running in terror from the Lord of the Wand.

I checked out the kills; in order, this is how the eliminations went, by primary item involved.

1) Leaf blower/magic wand
2) Water gun/magic wand
3) Water gun/barrage of attacks
4) Magic wand
5) Magic wand
6) Magic wand
7) Leaf blower
8) Magic wand

So, the wand was directly responsible for at least four of those eliminations. In the case of the shared kills, the leaf blower did the damage, but the leaves came from the wand; in the second case, the water got Delthion out, but (from my understanding) it wouldn't have hit him without him misusing the wand.

I agree that the wand is a bit too OP for its own good. Giving it a half-chance of backfiring every time, however, would even things out.

Am I the only one who's worried that getting the items of every person you kill might be OP?

This is coming from the player who became a weapon-loaded freak last round.
Title: Re: The Arena OOC
Post by: Faiyloe on July 29, 2015, 02:28:41 AM
I think taking out gifts from viewers will help fix that problem. Also we never found out who won the last round. Do you want to finish that?
Title: Re: The Arena OOC
Post by: James Gryphon on July 29, 2015, 02:56:11 AM
We could say you can only carry so many things at a time (so that you'd have to drop things you can't carry, leaving them open for other players).
Title: Re: The Arena OOC
Post by: Skyblade on July 29, 2015, 06:25:39 AM
That's a good and practical idea.

We could balance the viewers' gifts by putting restrictions on them. They shouldn't be allowed to donate really powerful things (AKA Russa's tras-whatever it's called gun). That could turn around the whole game and we don't want that. I think it's better if the players have to take advantage of the resources they already have.

We might also want to limit how many gifts each player can get.

About last round, I don't even know anymore...
Title: Re: The Arena OOC
Post by: James Gryphon on July 29, 2015, 06:37:06 AM
The transmogrifier gun was my fault (though I sent most of the gifts, actually). In all fairness, though, Russa had been one of the most creative players up to that point, and Faiy did put extra restrictions on it (I suggested it in its original incarnation from Calvin & Hobbes, which would have allowed her to also transform herself or other people; that obviously would have been unstoppable).

I think the gifts are a good idea, and liven up the game. It all just depends on how the host uses them. I'm thinking about not giving them away for free, but instead giving them as prizes for performing challenges -- or maybe just drop the item somewhere in the building and let y'all race for it.

---

Room description isn't final yet. I'm making some tweaks to it, to make it easier to picture and more manageable. I actually began work on a map earlier; I'm not sure if I'll post it up here for y'all to look at, or just use it for reference in designing the room. I want to leave some scope for imagination on y'all's part.

As a note to players, to help y'all get an idea of how the engine works, I'm showing the final die results that determine the outcome of your actions. The displayed numbers are after bonuses or maluses are accounted for.

Does everything we do have to be attempted or can we say *Run across the room and climbs the taller diving board* Or does it have to be *Runs across the room and attempts to climb the taller diving board*??

If we don't have to attempt everything what kind of things are we allowed to do without the GM making the final decision?
Title: Re: The Arena OOC
Post by: James Gryphon on August 12, 2015, 04:22:23 PM
The rule I'm going with is that things that require dice rolls are attacks of any kind (whether on people or the environment), and actions that inquire about the environment (like when Sky searched for things on the desk).

Whether something qualifies as an attack against the environment (attempting to change by force some part of it), I'm guessing I'll figure out myself based on how logically difficult it should be. After all, putting out a small fire with a big fire hose is one thing, stopping a big fire with a small fire extinguisher is something else. If Ash had attempted to stop the fire by stomping it out, that probably would have involved a roll.

If it's something trivial, like climbing a ladder or putting a coin in a coke machine, no dice. ;)
Title: Re: The Arena OOC
Post by: Faiyloe on August 12, 2015, 04:59:36 PM
I also had an idea to help fix the I have to many items and becomes OP problem. What if the player has to logically come up with a way to carry their things. if they can't they have to leave something behind.

Remember that if you're eliminated, you can respawn with different items and a different color, so long as there are still spots left in the game.

Update: I think it's fair to warn y'all that repeated attacks (like Soren trying to beat everyone over the head with his shovel last round) will receive maluses for lacking creativity. It's better to try to mix things up a bit, even if that means hitting someone without a weapon, than it is to do the same attack again and again.

2nd post: Uploaded the maps I made for Arena II onto my Photobucket account. After the game is over, I'll probably post them up here. I don't want to do it now, since it might damage y'all's creativity (and since the course the game has taken has already made them inaccurate).

Things are progressing in an interesting fashion. I'll be gone for a few hours, but I might be able to respond to any actions late this evening.

---

Hate triple-posting, but I like commenting on this game and my own posts.

I keep finding myself writing in 2nd person, instead of the customary 3rd person. It's a natural affectation for a text adventure aficionado, but it isn't proper to use it to convey ordinary actions and events. My convention is 3rd person for things that are happening, and 2nd person only for things that are seen from one person's perspective.

OOC: Why did that end so badly? I'm just curious.
Well, when you first dove down and attempted to get the chest, you rolled a 1 ("catastrophic failure"). I could think of two possible catastrophic results; either something would happen to the chest, or to you. Well, anything involving the chest seemed either implausible or too good of a result (considering that the last time somebody got such a low roll, they dropped what they were holding and nearly set themselves on fire), so I figured it'd have to happen to you. Then, it being underwater, the most obvious thing was that you'd start to drown somehow.

That itself wouldn't have been a decisive disaster, but then, when you attempted to swim back up, you rolled a 4, which falls into the "marginal failure" range (if it had been a 6, you would have broke the surface on your own). I considered having Faiy have to roll to save your life, but figured that since your life was already in her hands, she could save you or not as she saw fit. If not, your character might have died, from a very unlucky couple of rolls.

If you're in dangerous terrain, like the pool or the fire, you need to be careful, and try not to do too much -- the trouble began when you started trying to exert strength and move the chest. If you'd swum down and just tried to open it, that probably wouldn't have resulted in a roll (or if it did, the worst thing likely to happen is that it'd be locked).

Title: Re: The Arena OOC
Post by: James Gryphon on August 16, 2015, 07:16:23 PM
OOC conversation should be here (it makes it easier to read the story, and also for me to comment on things without double-posting), but so long as it meets that criteria, I don't care whether you post it in color or not. I think it'd be a nice touch, as it would help associate you with your chosen color even more strongly, but that's just my preference, not a rule.

On whatever happened while I was gone that isn't there anymore: alliances can be broken, "just like that". From what I can see in the rules, nothing in the Arena compels you to be honest any more than in real life. If you gain a reputation as somebody that breaks your agreements without warning, though, that's going to stick with you, most likely through more than one game.

On taking back moves: If I don't see something before you edit it out, then by default you can take it back. If I do catch it before you edit it, then maybe my post will include it and maybe it won't, depending on how nice I'm feeling. Every unedited post I see, though, that includes an action, is going to be accounted for.

Finally, try not to make assumptions about what people can or can't do. This seems to be causing a lot of trouble. Figuring out where all of y'all are in relation to each other, and how the environment works is what I'm here for. Just use your own best judgment for you. If somebody is way off course (like they think they're someplace where they aren't) and it can't be reconciled with the rest of the story, I will take that into account when I post my updates.

Mostly it's bad luck. People have rolled at least two 10s against you, and that has a way of adding up the damage.

I wouldn't say that you're worse off than Ash, though. Getting hit with the chair in particular was a pretty devastating attack, whereas once your eye's feeling a little better, you're still pretty much good to go.

Why not try the elevator?

Now that somebody's been eliminated for the first time, it's time to remind y'all: Eliminated players, or new players who want to try the game, can join, even though the game is already underway. There are three colors and three sets of items left. Pick one of each and you'll spawn (or respawn) in the center.

Also, I haven't updated the items and alliances and things in a while; sorry about that. I mean to do so soon; I'll re-read through everything tonight or tomorrow and see if I can get the first post up to date.
Title: Re: The Arena OOC

Double-post:

I did my best to update the alliances and inventories. If I missed anything, please let me know so that I can update it.

Some notes on carrying and using items:

If you use something that you aren't already carrying (like a chair) in an attack, and want to continue carrying it after the attack, please note this; otherwise I'll assume that you mean to drop it once you're finished using it.

Also, if you mean to retrieve fired projectiles (like the ice balloons), please note this in one of your posts; otherwise I will assume you left them where they fell.

Finally, if you pick up an object (again, like the chair) and attempt to wield it, and you're already carrying a lot of objects, you may be required to first drop some items. If you don't specify which items you want to drop, I will choose for you. Items that a player has dropped (or thrown) are free game. The only items that are "safe" are items that you're holding and/or are on your person, and items belonging to an eliminated player that you haven't been able to pick up yet.

I know there's a lot of fine print here; I hope it's not too difficult to understand. If any of y'all have any questions, feel free to ask.

I'm more than a little disappointed and irritated with how Arena II has turned out. I understand that a lot's been going on, but it doesn't require that much involvement to stay active. It's like a minimum-requirements RP.

If you're still active, post here. Otherwise, I'll kill you in a dramatic fashion in my next post. Then I'll try to recruit one or two non-players to take what's left and help any of the players that are left to make a game of it.

If nobody is active, then everybody dies and I win, and I'll write a post saying such.
