I have a little question, and I was wondering if anyone could help. Vilaya is called the sable quean, but her name is not spelled like queen (Quean not queen). Why is this?
Please excuse me if I make no sense, or if this is a weird question.
And if you have anything else to say about the sable queen, feel free to post is here.
Quean is an old English word for "wicked lady".
The book had a unique feature of containing a mole warrior, Axtel Sturnclaw.
And it had an array of freelance warriors; Bosie, Zaran, Axtel, Buckler. Pretty cool really, different from the more normal groups of fighters and pronounced warrior theme.

Post modified.
I absolutely LOOOVE Zaran!!!! She reminds me of Ranguvar Foeseeker, in a sense. Have you ever noticed how Zaran is the only black otter in the series, and Ranguvar is the only black squirrel in the series?
Yep. Also I believe Rake Nightfur is the only black hare and Farran is the only black fox.
It's cool how Brian put a black character of that species in ever now and then. ;D Zaran is the otter, Ranguvar is the squirrel, Rake is the hare, and Farran is the fox! Any other Redwall characters with black fur?
Shadow from Redwall.
I don't remember any others, but back on the sable quean topic: axle Sturnclaw is AWESOME!
Did Zaran end up marrying another otter??? I can't remember but it seems like she did......
Yes, she mated with Skipper Rorgus.
Isn't Zaran is from Doomwyte, not the Sable Quean?
I think the two books have been discussed here, and the characters of Doomwyte moreso. But yes, Zaran is from Doomwyte.

The disadvantage of speed reading.
daskar pointed two characters from Doomwyte.
In the Sable Queen they have:
Buckler (who I like soooo much)
Vilaya
Zwilt
Ambry
Axtel
My favorite character in the Sable Quean is Axtel. He is awesome
Axtel was great - now if only I could see a mole as an abbot/abbess, my life would be complete. *whistful sigh*
I'm never quite sure what I think of Buckler, but right now I really like him. His situation was an interesting one, and it spoke volumes about the culture behind the hares at Salamandastron. Fascinating.

when I read the book I wondered the same thing I looked it up in the dictionaryit says:bold, impudentgirl or woman;hussy(a bad mannered or pert girl 2. a worthless woman! that pretty much summons up vilaya :P
My fav character in the Sable Quean was Zwilt. I was angry when The SQ was alive after Zwilt almost killed her. >:( I also liked Buckler. And Vilaya took my signature weapon, a poisoned dagger! D:<
I know this is dredging up an old topic but I just reread Sable Quean and wanted to comment.
Flib is awesome.
I loved her character this time around. She reminds me of an even more awesome Storm Gullwhacker. She's fearless, and when she defends the two dibbuns from Thwip and his mate, stabbing one of them, I thought it was really brave and a nice change from young ones who can't defend themselves. I also thought it was funny that she insisted on being called Flib. It fit her personality perfectly.
I didn't like Flib. She is just too forceful.
Flib is awesome she has a strong spirit and is determined to do anything her way like a wanderer or warrior
Flib was just a mix of Spingo, Mariel, and some unknown horrifying character.
true ;D and diggs is pretty funny always liking food and such
It was hilarious when he thought he was Colonel Crockley Sputherington. :D :D
At first, like Buckler, I would have sworn Diggs was pulling Buckler's leg with the Colonel thing. I think Mr. Jacques executed that scene particularly well.
I was disappointed how The Sable Quean didn't have a big riddle in the story like every other book (not including the Rogue Crew 'cause I just started it.)
however, lack of boring characters practically made up for it. I wonder why he didn't use warrior moles before?

What's wrong with Spingo? Doomwyte is my favorite book.

um yes I read "Quean" in another book that I am reading called Kim and your def. fits there too. It is a very hard book to read (by Rudyard Kipling) but I am used to a harder read, I read a lot of Jules Verne books.
I liked flib after a couple of chapters after meeting her, not so much in the beginning. I found it very funny when Digg's thought he was another beast (name?), I laughed even harder when Dymphnia Witherspyk told of when Oakheart Witherspike had the same thing hppen to him and how he thought he was a owl.

Nothing, it's just that Flib seems to have all of Spingo's bad traits. ::)
What kind of animal is Vilaya??????? My little eight year old friends have been asking me what kind of animal she is!! They see the picture and ask who Buckler is, and what kind of animal is he, and who the Sable Quean is and what kind of animal who she is. All I can tell them is that she is a bad person....
She's a sable, which is a species of marten:

That looks kind of creepy.
Then again, Vilaya is creepy.
Naw, I think they're cute! But that particular picture suits Vilaya quite well.
Thank you! I thought "sable" meant black, because in King Arthur, there's a sable knight. Now, it makes sense...
she is a very evil sable. and supposedly beautiful. *creeeeepy*
I hate her, she kiiled Flandor! >:( >:( >:(
(She's just a coward, couldn't fight a properly armed beast)
I was annoyed cause I liked her at the beginning, then I hated her because she killed Flandor. :-X
Anything that uses poison is just not cool. I hated it when she killed flandor, even if he could have recovered the blade was poisoned and he didn't have the chance.
Whoah! I just got another crazy idea for my ENORMOUS series of fan fics comin' up! (it's going to be AWESOME!)
She is pretty good except for all the bad things shes done. Kinda reminds me of me
HAHAHA!
That made my day!
My favorite charecter is Flibb I really do not know why
Isn't that that annoying hedgehog that is really reall (x200000) mean?
No the shrew Logalog's oldest daughter
I hate her even more than the annoying hedgehog! :D
I know but for some odd reason I still like her ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? :D :D :D :D :D
Fie on you! Outrage sah! :P
;D ;)
Actually their's a another black here in 'High Rhulain' his name is captain 'rake grandon' I like I know is name is rake something...

Rake rake rake, when will it ever stop? :D
That was kind of funny... Two hares that are both black are both named Rake. :)
yeah, lol... maybe they're related!! :o

That is an interesting theory... somebody go start a thread for the Captain Rakes! XD" This one is about Vilaya, so let's keep it on topic. ;)
The part where she says 'Be silent, or I will eat you!' cracks me up every time I read it. ;D
How is canibalism funny!? (Which part was that again?)
okay, sorry. :) *goes to start new one for rakes*

Well, I knew she wasn't really going to eat them. She's too refined for that. ;)
I haven't read The Sable Quean yet. What is it exactly about?
You should read it, you wouldn't want us to spoil it for you. ;)
But it focuses around Buckler Kordyne, a blademaster in the Long Patrol, who hasn't learned to show respect and responsibility.

NO, and I repeat, NO vermin is to "Refined".... Except Blaggut of course!
I liked Buckler and Dotti's relationship, I found it a little more interesting then some of the other Redwall relationships. I don't know why, exactly, but I do.
(Was Dotti in that book?)
(I can't keep my haremaids strait, so I think so?)
The only Dotti I remember is the one from Lord Brocktree.
If I remember rightly, Buckler was too busy being the best swordsbeast in the world to have a relationship.
Twenty two books is a lot to keep track of, okay? I don't remember who's from which book, or who had a relationship with who. I could be thinking of someone entirely different.
What Jack said XD

That's incorrect, google was not lying about the meaning of Quean, Jacques used a old definition of it that has been out of use for decades.

I agree.
