Title: My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic Discussion
Post by: Wisteria Wild Cat on July 21, 2012, 12:29:15 PM
I can't belive that there wasn't a topic for this!

Seriously, try it out! It's AWESOME!!!
This is for you Pegasisters and Bronies. So discuss MLP here, post videos, talk about ponies, and all that fun stuff.

My favorite character is Pinkie Pie! She's awesome, and lover to see her friends happy, as I do. I'm not sure why lost of MLP fans like Rainbow Dash the best. She can be rude, and mean. She's also way to proud and full of herself for me.

So who's you're favorite character? What episodes have you seen? What's your favorite episode?

I was waiting for this topic to show up at some point---its hard to avoid.  Even Fox News had something on bronies in the armed forces wearing patches on their uniforms to signify that they like the show.

Sorry to say I'm not a fan of this show.  I've watched an episode or two, and couldn't see what all the fuss was about.

I think the Bronies are more about proving it's ok for grown men to like light hearted things, and that message I can get behind, being a twenty year old guy who still loves Redwall and other books for young people.  But I watched the show and I found it boring, to me.  But that doesn't mean other people can't enjoy it :)

Flandor, Redwall is one thing, MLPFIM is a whole different animal. ;)  Fantasy book series generally cross all age barriers and gender barriers--many people like them.

When you tv show about girl ponies with names like "Pinkie Pie" or "Fluttershy" and you have guys that go and legally change their names to something based on this show, you do have to take a step back and go "Okkaaaaayyyy...."  :o  There is a difference between liking something and a flat out obsession.....this show, I see more things that tell me this is an obsession with people rather than just something they like.  To bring up the article I just saw about the military, these men and women that choose to put this pony badge on their uniforms could actually find themselves in trouble because its an unofficial badge, and its not approved.  Its part of the policy of being in the armed forces.  If they want a pony badge they ought to get it recognized and not go about breaking policy because they want to be publicly seen as bronies in the military.....

I don't have so much a problem with the show as I do with the way people are constantly taking this obsession to the extreme.  I've a feeling a lot of people will look back on this the same way we've done on a lot of things from the past and exclaim, "What were we thinking?"

Ah, I suppose I didn't realize there were people changing their names and going to other lengths like that... Time for Flandor to hit Google and get a little more informed.  Since I dropped out of college I find I miss a lot of these kinds of new pop culture items.  I guess I sympathize a little because I catch a lot of flack for my interests and taste in entertainment, but then I'm not about to change my name to Cornflower and obsess to the extreme.

Not to offend the original poster in any way, of course.  I'm guessing a lot of people like the show who aren't obsessed to that degree.

I'm not crazy about my little pony shows, (I love the 80's though, and those were a big hit during that era). My sister used to love the older show when she was younger. If one of our members likes it, I'll respect that.

Well, because there is a topic for this...

I'm a brony. I admit it. At first I was a pony hater because I thought only trolls watched the show and I don't like trolls (for the most part that is, some trolls are really clever). Then I decided to watch an episode (the first one) to see what the fuss was about and... Yeah. I ended up enjoying it (but I wouldn't admit it at first). I liked the animation, character complexity (sort of), voice work, pop culture references and just the fun vibe to it. So I kept watching it. And then I found out one of my friends was a brony, and then met heaps of other friends who are bronies at school from him.

But for me it definitely isn't an obsession. I just enjoy watching the show. I would NEVER change my name to Fluttershy or whatever and I wouldn't even buy one of the dolls. I can't really see why people would change their names, that is taking it WAY too far. And the people wearing th badges in the army as well. That's taking it to the extreme.

For the record, Rainbow Dash is my favourite. :)

FTR: Kinda completely lost interest in this show, if you're reading back on this. Not exactly a "brony" anymore.

No.... it's just that they're shows that are off air, so I figured they wouldn't be as popular. But I like shows and movies from the retro years, so...,

Must admit, I almost made a topic for this myself. I'm way behind, sadly, having not watched anything since near the beginning of season 2 (not that I lost interest, but I was watching it with someone and we haven't had chances to watch it together, and have been watching other things).

I think it's a little unfair to judge a fandom by its most extreme members, since pretty much any fandom is gonna have people that take it to those lengths. I'm certainly not obsessed with the show, but I'm definitely a fan and call myself a brony (or pegasister, though I usually hear brony used regardless of gender). The animation is great, the show is amusing, and I LOVE the idea of making a "girl's show" that appeals to everyone based on humor, interesting stories, an actual fantasy world with mythological creatures and compelling villains, and good lessons about friendship that almost always apply to people of any age or gender.

Last year for Halloween my friends and I were doing human MLP cosplays, but it fell through at the last second because my pink wig (I was Pinkie Pie) would NOT hold a curl, and my best friend had a problem with her Applejack wig too. I've seen some AMAZING cosplays though--Rainbow Dash usually particularly stands out, though I've seen some gorgeous Fluttershys and Raritys too.

If anyone is a fan and likes D&D, too, I recommend the comic Friendship is Dragons (http://friendshipisdragons.thecomicseries.com/comics/1/)--MLP:FIM done as a D&D campaign. XD

There's also a hilarious and ADORABLE comic on tumblr about Princess Woona (tiny adorable Luna) on the moon called Moonstuck (http://woonastuck.tumblr.com/page/115). I recommend this to everyone! The concept of how it's done as a choose-your-own-adventure style thing with text commands is a bit of a Homestuck reference, but don't worry, this comic is totally appropriate for all ages.

As for my favorite pony...oh man, I don't think I could even choose. Can I choose Woona from Moonstuck? XD

Title: Re: My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic Discussion

My Little Pony was a big hit in the 1980's. They were a line of pony toys, with a t.v show, and other merchandise. Not they're bringing them back in this new show that some people (including Wisteria Wild Cat) likes. I never got into them, but my sister did when she was younger. Of course, that's long gone now, since she's 24 now.

I enjoy MLP:FiM.  I'm more of a casual fan - I really don't see the appeal in buying all the toys and stuff, I only talk about it among fellow bronies/pegasisters.  It's a fun show; it's feel-good and lighthearted, the animation is pretty good (it's actually made in Flash, which I particularly appreciate, having taken two classes on it in the past year... in fact, one day, one of my friends brought up a fan-made MLP clip and a bunch of us crowded around the computer pointing out what sorts of animation the person used) and of course there's lots of shout-outs to other things that adults will appreciate that kids may not catch.

And it's fun to see just what fans will come up with online.  xD  And Hasbro has accepted the fanbase, too - they gave a shout-out to the male fans, Bronies, in a commercial, and they've decided to allow fans to use clips and post the whole show without taking them down for copyright.

Anyway, examples of some pony videos (note, there may be language/etc):

One of the most-viewed music videos; a song sped up to kind of sound like the character's voice:

One of my favorites - a song from a Saturday Night Live skit put to clips of MLP:

Screw Attack does "Death Battles", where they come up with two characters, list the pros and cons if they were going to get into a fight, and then animate their own pixel-battle of the two characters:

*high-fives back*   I really am surprised by how widespread the fandom is.  I didn't become a fan until the last couple episodes of the first season; I'd only heard about it a bit online and initially shared the same doubts as most people.  It was only after some people on another site convinced me to watch it, and I watched several episodes and the enthusiasm of the online fanbase, that I got into it.  I know a couple people in real life now who like the show too, and now you hear about it in news articles and stuff.

I was curious about this, so I tried an episode.  I agree that the animation, and voice acting are terrific, but I don't understand how grown men can watch a televison show geared for little girls.  I don't have anything against bronies, I'm just not one.

Welcome to the herd, MatthiasMan. :) I was a bit like that: I thought it was really cheesy, but I couldn't stop watching. BTW, Wisteria, I doubt that video is legit. They made another one with McCain, and that was obviously fake. Also, you don't even see an angle of them facing the screen so we can see what they're watching. It'd be cool if it is real, though. 8)

Here's a hint for everyone: whatever you do, do NOT read "Cupcakes". I read a bit, worst decision of my life. *Shudders*

Age is non-existent when it comes to enjoying something you love. As long as you are not hurting anyone, do whatever makes you happy and love it as long as you can. I am probably the oldest fan in this community and I abso-bally-lutely don't care! Brian wrote the series from middle-age on. If he hadn't, we probably would not know each other or have a forum as nice as this one to enjoy.

Exactly. Even though iCarly is mainly written for middle schoolers, I found out that it  has a lot of college viewers, like me. I don't think I want to get involved with My Little Pony, but it's cool that you and Rain are fans. I prefer classic Disney and  Looney Tunes for my cartoon style.

I used to love MLP (the eighties version) when I was ten, I remember I begged my parents to buy me a coloring book of it at one of my favorite book stores. I only colored in it a few times before I lost my interest :P. My older half sister grew up near the 80's/90's decade and she collected a few of the original toys.

My mom had toys upon toys that she collected years ago. They're all gone, thank the Lord. Now my brother is a huge brony fanatic for the new MLP.  ::) I like the series I think it's all right.
Haha! My little brother won't watch it yet, but my BFFFL's brother watches it. You should encourage you brother and watch MLP together, hahaha!
Anywho, I'm going absolutely insane waiting for season three. It's not fair! They won't air the stupid episodes!  :'(

Apparently there's a My Little Ponies: Friendship is Magic movie coming ... sort-of ... BUT don't get too excited because Hollyweird and Hasbro have done their usual silliness to make sure it's as far away as possible from the original.

The fools in charge have decided to change the little ponies into human high schol girls and call it Equestria Girls.  ::)

This is from (http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/13/business/equestria-girls-a-my-little-pony-offshoot-in-its-movie-debut.html?_r=0)The New York Times ...

Quote
A New Direction for a Hasbro Stalwart
A film titled My Little Pony: Equestria Girls will introduce Hasbro's teenage offshoot of its popular pony brand.

Hasbro, the toy company that brought its Transformers and G.I. Joe properties to movie theaters, has set its sights on its next summer blockbuster: My Little Pony.

The ponies, a Hasbro staple for 30 years, have experienced a resurgence of popularity lately, thanks in part to the TV series My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. Hoping to build on that interest, Hasbro recently revealed plans for brand extension called Equestria Girls.

The new property will get the red-carpet treatment when it premieres as a full-length animated feature at the Los Angeles Film Festival in June. The movie, created by Hasbro Studios, the company's production division, will then be released in more than 200 theaters nationwide; its trailer will start appearing in theaters on Wednesday.

"We are responding to the desire by our fans to experience the brand in more ways," said John A. Frascotti, Hasbro's chief marketing officer. "They imagined themselves as which pony they would be or which pony they identified with the most."

So Hasbro created Equestria Girls, a parallel world in which the My Little Pony characters were reconceived as teenage girls in high school. To maintain continuity, Hasbro retained the same creative talent, animation style and message of friendship.

"Our goal is to stay true to who those characters are," said Meghan McCarthy, the head writer for the movie, adding that the high school setting allowed for new storytelling possibilities. "It's new but still an extension of our mythology."

The movie — titled My Little Pony: Equestria Girls — will be released on DVD later in the United States and other markets worldwide, followed by a television debut on the Hub network in the fall.

"It is a major strategic initiative for us," Mr. Frascotti said, one that will feature toys, apparel, publishing and accessories. Multimedia components include an interactive Web site, content on YouTube and a partnership with Stardoll.com, a fashion Web site for girls.

Hasbro does not break out revenue for My Little Pony, but in its earnings statement in April, the company said its girls' category rose 23 percent in the first quarter compared with the same period last year, growth that was helped in part by the My Little Pony brand.

Equestria Girls offers an opportunity to build on that growth, said Michael Vogel, vice president for development at Hasbro Studios. "This is a bold new direction," he said.

Note: Aparently that image is concept art. In the movie the girls are normal humans and don't have horse ears and wings.

In reality of course the change has been made simply so Hasbro can sell a whole new range of toys to girls.  ::)

Supposedly Disney cancelled The Clone Wars (and the entire LucasArts gaming company) because they wanted to concentrate on the new Star Wars movies ... but the reality is more likely that they didn't want to be making a show that plays on a rival channel (Cartoon Network) and the style of the show doesn't fit with the Disney channels. This is further proven by the fact that there seems to be a new animated Star Wars show now in the early stages of development.

Too late. Disney already cancelled the show about a month ago. Many episodes from Season 5 were already completed or nearing completion. It's unlikely those episodes will ever be seen in public, although the guy in charge of them is trying to get something done, whether it's a DVD-release of the season or a combbled together DVD-movie.

Disney today announced a new animated series called Star Wars Rebels that will start with a TV-movie and then be followed by a series (on Disney channels). It's due in "Fall 2014" and the stories are set in the time period between Episode III and Episode IV.

QuoteI won't be suprised if Mickey Mouse is the new hero in the next Star Wars movie.

He already was. Disney released a trailer on April Fools Day with Mickey Mouse and friends taking over the roles in the movies. It's probably on YouTube somewhere.  :)

It was only an April Fools joke.

Disney-fied versions of the Star Wars characters have been around for years - there are Hasbro figures with Mickey Mouse as a Jedi, Donald Duck as a Stormtrooper, etc. plus various posters, badges / buttons, soft toys, etc. I've got a soft toy Jedi Mickey Mouse in my collection. There's also a "Build A Droid" shop at Disneyland where you can mix-n-match Hasbro droid parts to build custom astrodroids, and some of the parts include things like Mouse ear hats.

I finally got around to watching Equestria Girls. It actually wasn't as bad as I was expecting! It was definitely different, but the plot was good and it wasn't that difficult to get used to the rainbow-coloured humans (not as difficult as I expected it to be, anyway). The songs were also very catchy, as usual. And I think  Snails  (http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130727074454/mlp/images/7/79/Snails_ID_EG.png) was adorable as a human. :D

I think the plot will go bad after or mid way through season 4, how much can you do with.. Well... A alicorn main character.. Unless they make all the other ponies alicorns.. But that would be stupid.

~granny smith, the alicorn

I watched Equestria Girls about a week ago.  I thought it worked if you're a MLP fan, but people just taking their little girls to the theater, who knew nothing of the backstory or all the characters, probably would find it rather unimpressive.

Recently, on a site I moderate (an Elder Scrolls fansite), one member joked that since there's six moderators, we should become the Mane Six.  One of the admins (who is not a brony) and I were the only moderators online at the time, and we gleefully agreed.  He became Pinkie Pie, I became Twilight Sparkle, and we edited the other mods' avatars for the other ponies.  It was pretty hilarious, and a bunch of the other members, even non-bronies, joined in.

The other moderators' reactions when they next came online and discovered their changed avatars were:
"Don't touch my _______ avatar."
"Okay, I know this is going to shatter the realm of "Avron never curses," but seriously:  Why the ___ am I a pony."
"What. The. ___. Happened. While. I. Was. Gone."
"Oh....NO PONIES...please Musicman take them down I know this was you!"

At least most of them played along with it and kept them a few days (and even admitted that their pony had grown on them, even if they initially didn't like it); only the grumpy first one there changed it back right away.

Yes he is! And sometimes they even use a very similar version of the flash on Star Trek.

I actually don't dislike MLP. I watched a few episodes and it was alright. Nothing special but for a show about magical ponies it was good.

The old My Little Pony movies from 2006 or so are horribly stupid.  But the newer show My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic is way better.  It's often quite hilarious and generally amusing.  I haven't seen it in ages, though. :P

I have precisely zero part of the online MLP presence (aside from reading Dash Academy and a few other things) but I enjoy the show greatly. It's basically the Simpsons for a younger audience.

Same, I do nothing for it online except mention that I watch it.

I admit that I've fallen behind in the show but it is a very good show and I hope the movie turns out just as good (I'm waiting for reviews to pop up before I go see it, though. Might use it as an excuse to go to the drive-in again, or this one theatre near me that gives out FREE UNLIMITED POPCORN REFILLS.)

It is.

And it's a really obscure theatre that we found by accident when looking for places that were still showing POTC 6 after its initial decline in theatres (so we could see it again).

It is like a very well-kept vintage 80's theatre where hardly anyone goes, the screens are modern though, and the popcorn is awesome.

Oh, and drinks are free refills too.

I like to call it the Jackpot Theatre.

Maybe tomorrow.

Even if the movie's bad I should at least give it money so it does well and more HAND DRAWN ANIMATION is out in theatres.

(Yes, I know it's digitally animated. But it's not CGI. It's hand drawn digital art, and I can appreciate that. They could have easily taken the 3D route.)

What do you mean? Discord's conversion? I love Discord as a character, but again I haven't kept up with the show steadily since the season 5 finale, so I don't know what they did to him.

She encourages him to be himself. There's an episode from season 7 where he hosted their tea party in his Chaos Dimension and so he tried very hard to make sure his house and himself would be just like Fluttershy to try to make him comfortable but she was actually very weirded out by it all since it was not like him at all and she was looking forward to seeing how crazy his place would be and everything. She even got quite alarmed when the lack of chaos actually started to make him start to fade away and disappear.
