Title: Sandpaw's Duel Chat with Ashes: And now Groddil
Post by: LT Sandpaw on September 30, 2016, 03:11:24 PM
 @Flor@Ashes

How do ya'll want to do these? Anything specific or unique that's come to mind? I would like to do very story driven battles, with lots of substance; focused less on the separate moves and more on the characters interactions.

I personally want to do a duel of wits with one of you, and maybe a more standard fight with the other. ;)

(Thank heaven for Mentions.)

A duel of wits sounds fun, but I've never been very good at coming up with witty comebacks. So, if Ash doesn't mind, perhaps you and I can do a more standard battle?

Comebacks are perfect.
Yiss yiss. ;D

@Flor@Ashes

Alright cool,

So Flor, any character you want to see fight in particular? I know you like to use squirrel characters, maybe we could do a friendly bout between two squirrels from our RPs, or the original books. Do you remember Martin's fight with the Gawtrybe leader? We could something like that. But I'm open for suggestions.

Ashes we could do this, lots of clever come backs and fiendish tricks, maybe where the characters are competing some sort of brain challenge. Where the one with the better intellect lives and the lesser one dies. I was wanting to use Slagar but there are a lots of cool characters to potentially use. This of course would be a shorter duel, but we're not being judged by length.

One thing I thought was worth noting is that your duel doesn't even have to happen at one time. If you wanted the 'duel of wits', it could be split into several separate scenes, over the course of some time, like with Ublaz and Rasconza in Pearls of Lutra. You could also use characters in addition to your main ones, as flunkies or to fill it out.

Slagar vs.... Vilu, maybe?

@James
Good to know.

SO.
Title: Re: Sandpaw's Duel Chat with Flor and Ashes
Post by: LT Sandpaw on October 05, 2016, 10:20:50 PM

Sorry I was waiting for Flor to respond.

But yeah, Vilu would be fine. I was thinking more along the lines of Lantur, or Ublaz, maybe I could use one of them while you use Vilu... So many good choices...

Now as for what we're going to do.

So going off what James said we could have them competing in a fight of assassinations attempts, or just a raw game of wits. Each one trying to outsmart the other in some way to get the upper paw. This'll be a little more difficult to plan, but lets start with the basics.

Where should this take place? I was thinking we could have them both on an island with their own personal guards, and they could be trying to take control. Maybe our characters were visiting some powerful vermin lord at the same time, who conveniently dies and they're both trying to use the opportunity to expand their personal empires.

What do you think?
Title: Re: Sandpaw's Duel Chat with Flor and Ashes
Post by: Ashleg on October 05, 2016, 11:57:26 PM
I think that's great!!
And Ublaz vs. Vilu would be cool. ;D
Title: Re: Sandpaw's Duel Chat with Flor and Ashes
Post by: LT Sandpaw on October 06, 2016, 12:34:24 AM

Awesome. The Pine Marten Corsair Emperor of Samperta versus the Stoat Pirate King of the High Seas. Both struggling to gain the advantage over the other, using any means necessary. Poison, assassination, trickery and vicious backstabbing diplomacy.

What should be the rules?

By the way Ublaz has his trident rats, lizards, and magic eyes. While Vilu commands the most dangerous dreadnaught on the ocean. Should we be able to utilize these advantages? Since its not going to be a battle, per say, but they may still have an impact.

@Flor

Have you thought about any of the suggestions I've listed above?

Title: Re: Sandpaw's Duel Chat with Flor and Ashes
Post by: LT Sandpaw on October 06, 2016, 02:23:52 PM

I was thinking they should arrive, go inside, and then as they're waiting in the audience chamber they receive the news that Corsair King Foulder, a great wildcat pirate, has just died in his sleep, and move on from there.

*Wails* My Mentions didn't tell me!

Anyway. I was thinking of using Arya? Is that okay, Sand?
Title: Re: Sandpaw's Duel Chat with Flor and Ashes
Post by: LT Sandpaw on October 08, 2016, 02:53:56 PM

@Peony, yeah that's fine. Arya is an OC you've used several times in RPs before right? Maybe I could dig up one of my old characters named Kasta Longeye and use him. Or maybe I could use Bracklew...

Anyway what should this duel be about. Would you rather it be a training session, or an actual fight? I do want it to take place in a squirrel tree village, like what the Ewoks in Star Wars have. If its going to be a squirrel duel they've got to be doing aerobatics through the treetops. ;)

@Ashleg

Sure, I'll make the thread and first post.
Title: Re: Sandpaw's Duel Chat with Flor and Ashes
Post by: Cornflower MM on October 08, 2016, 03:11:08 PM
Several times is an understatement. :P
I like the idea of a training session, with some fancy tumbling thrown in. And I was thinking about James' idea of it not happening all at once. It could be a small short duel, then a rematch (And rematch and rematch. :P) Thoughts?
Title: Re: Sandpaw's Duel Chat with Flor and Ashes
Post by: LT Sandpaw on October 08, 2016, 04:00:29 PM

That could certainly work. I'm certainly down with doing several rematches, but how would you want to do them? We could have one character win, and then skip to the next bout, or RP a bit in-between and return to the next bout for the loser to try again.
Title: Re: Sandpaw's Duel Chat with Flor and Ashes
Post by: LT Sandpaw on October 09, 2016, 05:59:32 PM

@James Gryphon  Do we post the duel on the duel board, or in the Tournament Board? I suppose you can move it if you need to, but for now I'll be following Sage's example.

@LT Sandpaw: Looks great so far. Barranca's a stoat, though, not a fox.

Rasconza was the fox. Barranca (http://redwall.wikia.com/wiki/Barranca) was Conva's (another stoat) brother.

One more thing: I might reconsider the designation of Sagitar as his "right paw"; if memory serves me, Ublaz referred to Lask by a title not dissimilar to that in the book, and he (as Monitor General) certainly seemed like a more feared and valued asset than the chief trident rat.

@James Gryphon  So just to confirm, are you going to take over for Peony, and if so does that mean I get an automatic win?

On who takes Pny's place, quite possibly. I'd like to ask someone if they'd like to take her place in the tourney, but the most likely answer to that is no, and in that event I'll likely take over her immediate duels (although I'm thinking about asking a few prominent RPers if they'd like to do one duel here or there, in the stead of the people who dropped out; not as much work as a full-time tourney player, but enough to be a little involved).

As far as "wins", that's not how I imagined the scoring working. Your scores are independent of each other's play and the outcomes of the duels.

Finally, I hate to sound like a broken record, but this is something that'd bug me if it stuck around (and something I'd probably grade on), so I do want to emphasize the importance of Lask and Sagitar's relative ranks.

Quote from: Pearls of Lutra, chapters 2 and 3Lask Frildur the Monitor General stood before the Emperor, flat reptilian eyes unblinking, scales making a dry rustle as his heavy spiked tail swished lazily against the marble floor. Ublaz nodded approvingly. The Monitor General had never let him down; everybeast on Sampetra knew and feared the reputation of Lask Frildur.
"Does all go well with you, my strong right claw?" Ublaz said, as he poured wine for them both.
...
Sagitar Sawfang was bigger than most searats, lean and sinewy with a mean disposition. She was second only to Lask Frildur, the Monitor General.

Besides Lask's unrivaled power and reputation, I think Ublaz would especially appreciate him for his absolute loyalty, something which the corsairs and other wave vermin are much more loathe to give.

Ok, ok, if its that big of a deal I'll change it. It just made more sense at the time due to reasons. :-\ And then I didn't want to bother changing it because I was to lazy to fix the paragraph. :P

One nitpicky detail: according to the intro, Ublaz didn't style himself as Mad Eyes; that's just what he was called out of earshot: "though none ever called him that to his face and lived".

There's also one minor typo, where it was "Bowfly" instead of "Blowfly".

That said, though, things look great so far!

Well, we didn't really have much planned other then what we're doing.

I suppose we could do one of James' suggestions, I like Greeneyes vs Barkstripe one myself.

Or maybe one of my ideas like Denya vs Gloomer or Orlando the Axe vs Dramz.

I've also been itching to write a story about Lantur for some time now, maybe I could use her and you select a character yourself from the series.

Honestly the options are pretty limitless. Heck we could even do a eating competition between two hares, like Dotti and Bucko's first competition.

Just take your pick. ;)

Younger gives you more flexibility and room for writing in the other Marlfoxes if you want. Book time period would be quicker.

They gonna go at it? It doesn't seem that Ublaz is likely to back down from that kind of a challenge, and with his scarf gone, and being a good duelist himself, I'd think he'd believe he has good odds.

@LT Sandpaw: Hey, the original plan sounds good, but what're we gonna do it about? I haven't read Marlfox in ages, so I'm kinda short on ideas.
Title: Re: Sandpaw's Duel Chat with Ashes: And now Groddil
Post by: LT Sandpaw on November 13, 2016, 11:00:27 PM

We could do something simple, like sibling rivalry when the foxes are in their teens. Or we could have them duel in line with the book.

Like instead of Mokkan pushing Lantur off the cliff, Lantur manages to avoid that particular assassination and they instead try to off each other in different ways.
Title: Re: Sandpaw's Duel Chat with Ashes: And now Groddil
Post by: Groddil on November 14, 2016, 12:24:43 AM
I like the second option. Maybe we could have them try a few simple tricks to get rid of the other, then ultimately just resort to brute force at the end. Or maybe one of the plans could succeed.
Title: Re: Sandpaw's Duel Chat with Ashes: And now Groddil
Post by: LT Sandpaw on November 14, 2016, 12:33:58 AM

Seems good, the brute force in the end when the other attempts don't work sounds fun. We could have them try a few things, and then have them do a short battle of sorts. It'd be kinda cool seeing Marlfoxes using their natural skills of stealth and trickery to try and gain the upper paw.

Do you want to start it?

Guja was the steersrat of Freebooter, so he would have served under Barranca and Rasconza, respectively. He was never known for his loyalty to Ublaz.

There's a list of non-Sagitar trident-rats here: http://redwall.wikia.com/wiki/Ublaz%27s_Corsairs
The only trouble is that these are the ones that Ublaz appointed to captains and gave to Rasconza. It's safe to guess they're loyal, but that's it: "Do you think I gave you valuable fighters to captain these ships? Like Orlug, whom you slew, those five are worthless fools."

Some other options you have: You could make up a name and personality for a new trident-rat commander, or, if you want to stick with known characters, you could simply let Ublaz or Lask lead them directly.

Guja is just going to be used so that I'm not RPing by myself when Ublaz and Vilu aren't together.

That, and the events of the books haven't happened yet.
So technically Guja is still with Ublaz, loyalty out of the picture.

Out of curiosity, where's the other ships in Ublaz's fleet? It's mentioned he has three at this time, but only Freebooter's in the picture right now.

Well I didn't want Ublaz being overpowered with three full crews, so I just left the other two out. Story wise they're out looting and raiding, and would meet up with Ublaz at some later date at a preset location.

Vilu Daskar? Guja's one of Ublaz's pirates.
