#actually "#" is the number sign, as in "#1". It's also erroneously called the "pound sign" in America. Twitter stole it and butchered the meaning ... again.

#It probably says what "pound" means on that Wikipeadia link. I'm guessing it somehting to do with weights (pounds, ounces, etc.) since America still uses ye olde non-metric systems.

#By a strange coincedence, the # is shift 3 on a standard American / Australian keyboard, but on a UK keyboard shift 3 gives the £ pounds sterling currency symbol.
