Title: Roleplaying Questions
Post by: Rose of Noonvale on July 01, 2011, 06:58:50 PM
I have a question. I belong to the warriors cats forums, and there, I use parentheses when out of character. May I use those as well?

Technically, if you want to require good grammar in your rp, that is fine.

Yes, I suppose so, if it is your RP.

We could do this too, but the descriptions for each RP are usually at the top of the sign-up for the RP.

I might get around to creating that, but I'm lacking the time for now. I'll take any suggestions on how to lay it out via PM.

And in general, proper grammar, or at least attempted grammar, would be the way to go when roleplaying. Effort in doing so would always be an encouraged function on this forum.

I was just thinking, wouldn't it be cool if someone wrote a story of a finished RP, so the people who didn't join can see how it went without having to follow it?
Title: Re: Roleplaying Questions

I've seen that attempted before, never finished. The rp I refer to was something like 14000 replies in length...

Post by: DanielofRedwall on November 30, 2011, 09:14:38 AM
If the leader decides that someone has done something so bad on their RP, it is their decision if they want to kick them out. I would first tell them they've done something wrong either by personal message or the OOC page. Probably alert a Moderator as well. If they're unhappy with their response or just keep doing it, kicking them out is a fair option.
Title: Re: Roleplaying Questions
Post by: Taggerung_of_Redwall on November 30, 2011, 09:28:28 PM
If it violates forum rules, then it's purely the staff and the offender's issue. If it's troublesome behavior relating directly to the art of roleplaying and/or roleplaying in the thread (i.e. godmoding, powerplaying ect.), it's the creator and offender's issue.

If you want to start one, you can create a thread for it.
Come up with a plot and then wait for a few people to sign up some charries.

Title: Re: Roleplaying Questions

You don't need to ask the same question to two different topics. You'll be seen just fine with one, and for certain that way you won't waste anyone's time.

Have you went and asked to join the roleplay? If so, you should get a response fairly soon.

Title: Re: Roleplaying Questions
Post by: Mad Maudie on January 11, 2012, 12:08:22 AM
Well normally you have a signup page where you tell them the storyline and they put down a made up or real character and tell you about them you let them join and they do it with you if you wanted to do it yourself basically Write the story then you do it in Redwall fan fiction
Title: Re: Roleplaying Questions
Post by: Tiria Wildlough on January 11, 2012, 05:43:16 AM
We only use made-up ones though. ;) But if you want to make a RP where people use canon characters, that's fine.

Title: Re: Roleplaying Questions

I suppose if the RP masters wants, the RPers can do a scene over again.
Title: Re: Roleplaying Questions
Post by: BrookSkimmer on February 15, 2012, 05:48:44 AM
Sure, you can redo a scene. It's easiest if it's just to change a post you wrote. You can always click the modify button and change what you wrote. As far as doing a lot of posts over, you can just ask the other RPers in the story to jump back and re-write as you go.

Since the primary goal of the Directory topic was more or less negated by the advent of the Finished RP's / OOC child boards, it was removed to reduce clutter. :)

I think he means that he wants to add music to the battle scenes.  That would sound sort of cool, but I don't know.  It would take longer because you would have to listen to it, then post.  Also it would take up a lot of space.  Though, if you want to add music, you could do what AbbotAlf does.  He puts a theme for the RP in the OOC sign up.

I usually use common words, such as Dusk, Rain, Shadow, Jag, etc.  Another thing I use is names of fictional cities, like Linhir and Valmar.  I use normal names and words from different languages as well.  There's a bunch of ways to come up with names.

Yes, like Chelonia Mydas, is latin for Green Sea Turtle. And Featherwood is a type of tree. Hillack was just random (as was Muchlik). Stonefeet and Deathtail just fit their characters.

So just put words to getter or add more letters to words or take words in another language.

If you're still having difficulty with names, you could just go to a name generator website, like Seventh Sanctum. They have generators for ALOT of things. Lovecraft names, elven names, 1800-sounding names, evil warlord names.. you name it :)

Title: Re: Roleplaying Questions
Post by: W0NWILL on January 11, 2013, 09:09:19 PM
Well, there's loads of ways you can do it. It can be something as simple as Redwall defending itself from a vermin attack(there aren't many of those), or something complex, and involves a cave that the band gets trapped in, as well as vermin invading Redwall while their in there, and when they get out, they find Redwall has been taken. That's one of my RPs that didn't go so well.
Title: Re: Roleplaying Questions
Post by: Something Horrifying on January 11, 2013, 10:00:45 PM
I mean, I have no shortage of ideas! My problem is usually too many! lol I just don't know how to effectively run a RP. Like giving players enough structure/plot without railroading, dealing with issues that arise, adapting the story to the actions of the characters, etc.
Title: Re: Roleplaying Questions
Post by: BrookSkimmer on January 11, 2013, 11:36:32 PM
Once you get going its not much of a problem giving structure and plot. I usually scaffold a basic plot but keep it open to changes and development. It's up to you how much you want to structure. As the host of an RP you get to decide all of that. The best way to figure it out is to just start one and see how things go. You can continue to adjust as the role play rolls out.

As far as adapting the story, you won't need to adapt if you design the plot enough. You can ask players to stay within the boundaries of the plot you set out.

My last note on this; just try it and adjust as you go. That's how I learned what to do and not do.  ;D

The reason why there isn't many ofthose is because it's become too stereotype. Almost every book by Brian has a vermin invader.

I think we removed it.  It wasn't up to date, and at the rate new RPs were being created / finished / modified, we can't keep up with every little change.

Hey, Are RP's generally done in the course of one or a few days, or do people post on them just as they would normally on any random forum thread?

Hey, Are RP's generally done in the course of one or a few days, or do people post on them just as they would normally on any random forum thread?

Do you mean done as in finished?  Because no, most of them take quite a few days, weeks, sometimes even months!  (Well, maybe not too many months, but some could!)  One that I started awhile back, The Quest for Romance, took a really long time to finish.

If you mean done as in people playing all the time, then it varies.  Sometimes they have members playing in them who are on often, so the RP goes by quickly.  Other times, the RP goes quite slowly, because the members don't post a lot.  That's the case in some RPs that have a minimum of so many sentences in each post.  I quite enjoy those, though, because you go more in depth with your character (at least, that's what the idea is).

So, pretty much, for both answers, I guess it varies on the RP and the members playing the RP.  Did that answer your question, or was I totally off?

:D Neither! Well, partly. Is there usually a scheduled time that we say like "Ok, we're gonna play x rp at x time, join us then!" And I did not mean done as in finished, more along the lines of played. :)

Lol, well, I was a bit off!  ;)  Um, usually RPers just RP whenever they're able to do it.  There's really no set time on most.  Maybe on some, but mostly it's just 'Hey, whenever you want to post, do it then'.  The reason for that (in my opinion) is that some of us are in way different time zones, so it'd be rather hard for all of us to be on at one time.  So pretty much, we just do it whenever we can.

Did that answer your question?  ;)  (Lol, try two!  :P)

If you go into the OOC/Discussions childboard (http://redwallabbey.com/forum/index.php?board=22.0) you'll find RP's that haven't started yet; find one you like, read the GM's rules, and then ask about joining it. You can also start your own RP in the OOC board. Just make a new thread and lay out the rules and requirements for your roleplay and then sit back and wait for other players to sign on.

Question: For example, if I say something that someone else doesn't like, then they sort of get on to me about it, (Just for example!!) and that person gets on to me about stuff in other RPs, what happens? It's really not nice :( I was in a good mood when I got on, and now it's gone after looking at some RPs I'm in. :( :(

Such a personal issue can't really be handed a formula like you would for Science or Calculus. Each situation is different from another and must be dealt with appropriately. The best thing you can do is try to see things from the others position (pretty sure I know what's going on here BTW, if you want to talk more in-depthly then just PM me, I'd be more than happy to help you on this). Also, try to understand that other people have bad days too, and try and think of times where you've had a bad day and might've said something that you later regretted. I know I sure have plenty of these things to look back on myself. Finally, don't let it get to you. There was a member here a long time ago (not going to name names) Him and I were at each others throats over EVERYTHING, we rarely ever agreed and I've had far too many bad memories. The long and short of this last one is, don't let want for a good RP become a selfish desire that you would seek over the friendship of a member, I goof off a lot, yet in some of my less-than-friendly moments... I've lost potential friends. Believe me, it's not worth it.  :'(

Hope that helps.  :)

If you're comfortable with it, you can always contact the other member through PM and talk it out. Otherwise message a mod. You can also report whichever posts are bothering you and explain why in the comments field.

If you're feeling very emotional just go straight to PMing a moderator, better not to post until you've had a chance to cool off. The best way to keep a conflict from getting out of hand is to avoid feeding the fire while the forum staff look into it.

Title: Re: Roleplaying Questions

You ask, that's the only truly definite way to tell.... Assuming someone replies.  ;)
Title: Re: Roleplaying Questions
Post by: Osu on December 14, 2013, 05:30:21 AM
Make sure there's nothing in the OP or subject line about the RP being closed to new players, then go ahead and post in the OOC thread as per the GM's rules, or PM the GM if you don't want to post in the thread. If they don't say, there's no way to tell, so potential players will have to ask one way or another.

If an RP is only open to a select few players, by name or number, GM's will typically say when they are no longer accepting new applicants in the OOC thread. Look for words like "closed," "username only," or a listing of usernames such as in the Dueling Roulette threads.

Whatever the case, don't be shy! The worst anybody can say is "no," right? And you can always start your own RP if you can't find one that's open or that you're interested in! :)

actually I don't think that is a good idea we put ours in the cellars before we realized that it was going to turn into a real RP I am currently trying to get it moved... Or not trying as hard as I should. I think Those would be best to go in the RP board like any other Redwall RP and you just put closed in the title.

Hello, Jasper, and welcome to the forums! If you make a topic in the Front Lawns, you'll be properly greeted and introduced there.

As to your question: Some of them are not really possible to be joined, but if you do really want to, then you should talk to the person who started it. There is a new RP that will be starting that is directly after the events in Wildcat Attack, so you can talk to Cornflower MM about that. ;) My two cents is that you should look for newer ones and talk to the GM (the person who started it). Other than that, I'm afraid I can't really help. :-\

Welcome to the forum Moss. You'll find the specific Form in it's OOC (Out Of Character) topic in the OOC board. From there, you can find the form on the OP (Original Post). Just fill that out and wait to see if it's accepted by the GM (Game Master/Almost always the first poster). If it's accepted, then you should be good to get in on the action. If the GM asks you to make a few changes, or just downright denies your character, then just try again... Unless the RP is done taking players, but that hardly ever happens.  ;)

Post by: The Skarzs on May 15, 2015, 03:36:40 AM
How to complete one? Okay, well there's a sub board here called OOC Roleplay Discussions, and in there you can find threads for RPs. On the first page the game master should have how he wants the character sheet to be filled out, and you just have to give the information asked as it corresponds to your character. The GM should accept it. :)

EDIT: Thanks for the 7-second earlier post, Dan.

There's nothing stopping you from using the same characters, I use a similar mold for the vast majority of mine. If you find something you like, I wouldn't stop you from recycling. That having been said, exercising with different characters is a great way to build your RP'ing skills as it forces you to think differently in interactions, speech, combat, etc.

TLDR: Absolutely, but trying other things is strongly encouraged.

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.

- Zen Cho

While you can certainly drop a character, be willing to try improving the character first. Try different angles, rewrite backstory, expand on minor details, etc. Don't give up simply because it didn't work out the first time! My original-character-turned-fan-character Sylvia Johnson wouldn't exist if I simply gave up every time the story ended up bad (I've scrapped every original story with her, and now she's a Sonic fan character, simply because I couldn't let her go, and honestly, this one's turning out pretty good!)
