Title: What year are these books based in?
Post by: Redwallfan7 on February 17, 2012, 08:21:16 PM
I'm guessing the Medieval times?

Yes, they were based around Medieval which is why they use swords, bows'n'arows ect

Although they do wear some varieties of clothing that weren't invented for several hundred years after the traditional Medieval era.

Medieval style, but it takes place over hundreds - possibly thousands - of years.

Does it matter? (we are talking aoubt when Redwall took place right?) but I'd say Redwall took place about the time of the Renaissance era.

No, it doesn't really matter, but one could say Redwall itself doesn't matter, since it's fictional.  The point is that we're curious.

I try not to think about it too much, but when I get going I picture an early medieval era (saaaay... 700 AD onward) with a good handful of Italian Renaissance (1400 AD -ish) and a slight pinch of present day England. :D

I'd say Renaissance

Age is relative.  Maybe Osu is 75 and deserves to call you a kid.  ;P  No offense to Osu, naturally, you don't sound that old.

Pfft, I just realized that's totally not what Osu just said to do.

I think I'll be an 83 year old man. >8D You are correct, of course. Back on topic.

Who's to say the books don't take place in the distant future, long after man/civilization have run their course? I recall some minimal discussion on this a while back, something to do with something Riggu Felis said about being the only wild cat...

That's actually a really interesting theory.  Which book is Riggu Felis in?  I forgot.
Title: Re: What year are these books based in?

Riggu Felis is in High Rhulain.
Title: Re: What year are these books based in?
Post by: Osu on March 31, 2012, 10:41:49 PM
I am 93.44% positive there's a topic for this exactly somewhere, I'll see if I can find it.

Mean time, there was a point in High Rhulain where Kaltag said something to the effect of, 'We're all wild cats here,' and Riggu told her, 'No, your ancestors came from distant lands where they served greater masters' or something like that. I just can't for the life of me recall the quote.... lessee if I can find the original topic. XD

I have a feeling that there are humans out there somewhere. The horse and cart from Redwall (not to mention the town dog) as well as Riggu Felis tirade, make it seem like there is something bigger out there.

treu it also had a mixture of many new ideas from when Brian was a kid. i know this becase my grandma is about as old as he and has read some of the books and I've asked a bout some of the crodials and she told me how sometimes her grandmother would make elderberrry cordial and stuff like that too.

I believe what you're searching for is "medieval".

As a point of interest, you can get squash or cordial mixes in British specialty shops around the U.S.

Fortified buildings imply the medieval era, where the manor system offered protection to the inhabitants due to a lack of centralized law.  You hear of wandering groups, though not of any real small towns, which would imply after the medieval period (in or around the Renaissance era with city states).  So I still stick with my original post, these are probably based before what we know as 1300.

I think they have there own era. It's alot like Medival/Renissance but they are somewhat advanced in military tactics and dress code.

I agree. The Redwall books are placed in the Medieval times mixed with something else.
