I'm guessing most people will've seen their own Martin mouse scuttling around at some point, or maybe even a rat or two. I realise that I don't think you can get the hedgehogs or badgers described in the book in North America and possibly not Australasia either, and you can't get wild wolverines in Britain, etc.
Have you seen all or many of the animals mentioned in the wild yourself?
Or any in captivity?
Any interesting stories behind these sightings?
In the wild, I've definitely seen:
Mice, rats, shrews, rabbits, hares?, foxes (the closest I got to an urban one was a matter of centimetres away), various birds including buzzards, hedgehogs, bats... possibly a badger from a distance.
Not in the wild:
Seen a pet ferret being walked in a town centre! I've seen otters in captivity and also a cute event at a gallery-museum years back with a talk about two baby otters and I was allowed to touch one! Seen seals at various wildlife parks.
I have not, unfortunately, seen weasels or stoats (can't remember if ever seen them at zoos), bank voles, wildcats, wolverine, beaver (unless at a zoo?)...
I've probably forgotten lots of animals!
Ok, well I had several run-ins with foxs, some came so close I could almost touch them.
I've seen and held rabbits and hares, in fact I saved a baby rabbit from my dog this last spring.
I held a hedgehog before as it was crossing my back yard (When I lived in Europe).
I've held and played with many a shrew.
We had at least 4 brown mice in are garage, and I saw several in a castle in France and switzerland before.
I have seen a few rats in my time as well.
I've seen Red, white, grey, brown squirrels aswell.
We had a few bats come into are house once.
I've seen snakes of plenty.
Wildcats have also crossed my path.
I've seen a few moles as well.
When I went to North Carolina I found 3 turtles.
We have at least 4 frogs in are fountain at the moment, and I used to find toads as well.
At my Uncles house there are lots of lizards.
I've seen many birds as well including european sparrows.
So that's all I've seen that was in the wild. ^^
I have seen many more in zoos, and other places.
We used to own several chickens and one day I was out with them and a mouse came running into the chicken coop. Before I could chase it out again the chickens killed the mouse. That was rather sad because I never like to see animals get killed.
Another Redwall animal I've encountered before are lizards. Where I live we have tons of lizards and our old cat was an outdoor cat. He loved to chase and catch the lizards. Several times I had to go outside and bring him back into the house to let a lizard he was chasing escape.
We also have a family of squirrels that live under our shed. They love to come out and eat all the birdseed I set out for the birds. I don't really mind because I love watching the squirrels just as much as I love watching the birds.
Some other Redwall animals I've seen are rabbits, toads, turtles, buzzards, otters, and many others that I'm forgetting at the moment.
That's great!
Oh gosh, I forgot about squirrels! What an obvious one! I've seen plenty of grey squirrels, but only seen a red in captivity.
I've seen the odd snake (not sure if it was an adder or a grass snake), frogs and toads and lizards (the latter while in Malta and Spain).
When I used to have a blow up paddling pool in the garden, twice a frog found its way into it! I actually played with it a bit before it got sent away to a proper pond.
Ve are alvayz findin' frogz in ze mornin' at our zummer pool. Ve'd 'ave a group o' kidz runnin' around fizhin' frogz oot o' ze vater!
We have hedgehogs where i live and ive seen a few
european sparrows
bats(never seen one)
owls(only heard one)
And a few lizards
Oh yes, and I've seen some owls up quite close. :)
I've seen gray squirrels, rabbits, bats , hawks (from a distance), and foxes allot. I have also seen Shrews and a mouse but the were all dead. The were killed by bug killer. I have seen snakes, otters, and owls in captivity. That's about it.
Once I saw a redtail hawk REALLY close! I was hiking and it flew right past my head! Also, once I was camping and a mouse came into our tent :o There was also a stuffed stoat at a hotel, and I've seen plenty of domestic ferrets in pet stores :D
Has anyone ever seen a badger IRL?
QuoteOnce I saw a redtail hawk REALLY close! I was hiking and it flew right past my head!
There are tons of Redtail hawks were I live. I think they nest somewhere near my house.
QuoteHas anyone ever seen a badger IRL?
When I was at wilderness camp this year some of my counselors and and some campers saw a badger. Unfortunately I was out on a mini hike with one of my counselors and a camper so I didn't get to see it.
I forgot to mention that I have seen some Great Horned Owls. A couple of years ago they biuld a nest quite near my house and I was able to watch the babies grow up. It was fun.
I've seen several of these animals out in the wild. A friend and I even caught a wild ferret and he kept it as a pet for several years before finally selling it. Having lived in the Midwest of the US for most of my life, most of these animals (minus probably the otters) are quite common to see.
I think the rarest think I saw was an adder, in the wild, or a weasel I saw. Ive practicly seen all redwall animals in zoos, but you can never beat seeing something is the wild!!! :)

Weasels!!!An' aye, nozin' beatz zeein' ztuff oot in Nature!
Well I've seen....
A Weasel. We went to New Jersey on vacation and one was on a rocky beach.
A Fox. My brother had to shoot it though cause it was killing our chickens.
Moles. Our Neighbor's dogs killed two of them :(
Squirrels. They are ALL over the place!!!!
Lizards. Same thing as the squirrels - All over.
Ferret. Our neighbor had a ferret and we went and saw it and they let us name it. We named it Romsca ;D
A bunch of birds that are in redwall are around our area: Crows, Owls, Vultures, Kites etc.
I think that is it.
Every time I see a squirrel (which there are a lot of around here), I'm like, "Hi Dann!" "Hi Tam!" "Hi Girry!" and so on.
There's a rascally little squirrel who continuously gets into our garbage...Chugger, perhaps?
^ Sweet! It's interesting to hear when people had these sightings if they were reminded of certain Redwall characters! :D
I saw a snake in our tomato protecting net, heard wan in our front porch, saw one in a hole that I accidentally run over sometimes, and one in the front yard. All before I read redwall.
Theres lots of cats and squirrels in our neighborhood

I've never seen a badger
But I've seen ferrets in captivity
And a dead wild mouse or maybe it was a vole
And captive mice (alive)
And squirrels(all the time)
Never seen a shrew
Never seen a hare just rabbits
Not a hedgehog unless u count seeing them on TV
Captive otters I've seen they are awesome
I've seen a fox
No stoats or weasels
Captive rats I've seen
Bats I've seen (captive and wild) though I could just see the shape in the dark for the wild one
Various birds in Redwall I've seen I think...umm someone said something about a red tailed hawk were they ever in Redwall? Those I see all the time (but not as often as squirrels!)
I've held a few shrews, mice and voles in recent times, because of my male cat bringing them in, to take them back outside to safety while they still can. Fast little critters!
My cat even brought a bat in a few weeks ago! :o A long-eared one which I haven't seen in the wild before. Unfortunately it was dead.
There are a lot of squirrels in our neighborhood. In fact, some got in our attic so my dad has been shooting them with his pellet gun.
I do that all the time ::)
I once saw a mouse that looked like Martin. (At least, I thought so.) And I've seen otters goofing off just like the ones in Redwall. ;D
I've seen all the animals in the Redwall series in real life, except for the Wearet, but that isn't real. ;D

I just saw a bat today, it flew out a cave...pretty cool, though it gave me a fright!

I LOVE BATS ;D
in london there are foxes everywhere... i'm not a city person, and i really hate london, but one of the true joys i have with living here is being able to go out into the tiny little park behind my flat and watch the foxes playing with eachother.
when i lived in cambridge, i could feel confident that after just a couple of minutes walking, i would see a hedgehog... perhaps the most beautiful of the redwall animals?
there's a pine marten in mossflower, i forget his name now, and the book is too far across the other side of the room... i heard some pine martens being attacked by herons in a forest way up in the north of scotland.
His name was Ashleg.
I am a girl but that's Ok and your welcome.
I'v seen otters at the zoo and one time there were mice in our house
I've fed Fox Squirrels by my door. Once I saw a Least Weasel at a local park. I fed cabbage to a backyard rabbit. We had mice at a workplace. A few years ago, a beaver chewed down several trees at the same park as the weasel lived in, before he was moved by the wildlife control people. Sparrows nested in my gutter and one lone sparrow slept under my awning during a very rough winter. I saw a Northern Goshawk kill a pigeon outside the patio door. There are several Eastern Pipistrelles that hunt insects near my living room window. They catch bugs that are attracted by the outdoor light. I once rescued a fish that had stranded on the beach at Lake Erie. I often see Red Foxes as I'm driving to work.
Forgot to say: I've seen water snakes in local streams and Garter snakes hatching in the spring. They are non-venomous but I keep clear of them anyway.

WEASELS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've seen squirrels and rabbits! :D And probably other Redwall animals at the zoo or something.
i went back to my parents' place this weekend and went for a walk around their village and between a church and a small green area, there were bats flying everywhere. bats really are one of the most magical animals to watch doing their thing, as well as listening because they make their beautifully subtle clicks to echo-locate. if you have good hearing, then you'll be lucky enough to hear them.
I've seen rats in real life. Touched them, too. They're actually not evil or disgusting like most people seem to think.

of course not! i love rats... i was planning on getting two of them as pets for a while, but then two guinea-pigs were offered to me for free by my boss, so i figured it would be better to take them.
alas... no guinea-pigs in redwall. at least i doubt there are any in the books i haven't yet read

We have red squirrels where we live
Also I'd seen foxes, hares(different species from the books), beavers, mice, rats, voles, every type of bird in the books, toads, frogs, snakes, and lizards
Awesome!
We lack many animals from the books here. . . No red squirrels, no foxes or stoats, no badgers, no wildcats (we have lynxes and cougars. . .) and no hares.
We have all of the animals you listed as not having.
Where I live we have mice. And cats. ;D
We have a tree in which an owl and a rat live together.
Wow. How has the rat managed to live this long?! ;D
I have no idea, I see it scurry up the tree in the mornings; and the owl hoots at night from the same tree. Anyone have an idea why?
The owl is allowing the rat shelter and in turn the rat is doing errands for the owl.
Iiiinteresting! :D
I don't often see rats in the wild, but my cat brought in his first a few weeks back... dead (thankfully. Don't really want a big rat scuttling around the house!)
Since my original post, I have seen a weasel and a stoat in the wild. Woo! The weasel up a hill in Scotland, and a stoat was running across a main road a bit nearer to where I am. Fortunately made it across safely! :D
I have about five rats in my garage. . . Big ones, too.
Yikes!
I love rats. Take a picture of them, Skarzs.
. . . Probably won't. Unless I catch them in a trap. In which case they will be dead and you will be sad.
Alternatively, poison works well.
(We have rat traps but no poison. :P Otherwise I would use it.)
It is pretty obvious where Brian got inspiration for his animals. But what places was he aware of that had the other animals, like the ones on islands? The monitors, the sea snake, the hamster. . .
Well, they all exist. Chances he saw pictures of them and liked them. And Mokug wasn't Brian's creation.
Was Mokug the hamster? I wondered why there was a hamster in the book. His parents, or just him, must have travelled pretty far.
Mokug was the hamster. I'm almost 99% sure I read that he was submitted by a fan in response to a contest and Brian chose him.
For real? Wow! That would have been cool.
I do feel like I have heard that before, some time back, actually. Where's that fan now, eh? Possibly not all that deserving if they aren't even fan enough to be on this forum all these years on! ;D
I wish it was me.
But then again, I was probably five or something and didn't even know what a "character" was.
Come to think of it, this one time I saw a dead weasel on the side of the road. Which is kind of weird, since I've never seen any others in the area before or since.
Also, I have no idea whether weasels are indigenous to Utah or not. :P
One time, I was driving in the middle of nowhere, and the road had no traction so I ran over a squirrel... so I just thought to myself, It's okay, it's just Araltum Squirrelking..."
I liked Araltum Squirrelking. >:( :P

Sorry for that Ash, but Araltum is a "fool".
He is also "awesome". ;D
But... all he is is a simpering, pompous coward who literally does nothing for the entire book.
He does.
Spoiler
He gets the squirrels killed.

He gave me feel like Doogy.
He made me want to wring his filthy neck with his own tail.
As a king, I'll have you know his neck was probably very clean.
Perhaps. But it won't be for long.
...Skarzs shouldn't read Mistmantle.
o_o
It's pretty much about squirrel kings.
Are they worthless, Araltum-like squirrel kings? If not, I doubt there'd be any problem.
The main villains are.
Wot.
Sounds interesting.
It's great.
But if you want to strangle Araltum you'd probably get annoyed.
I get annoyed at a lot of things. I will manage.
I'll check it out
I read the first Mistmantle book. They're interesting...similar to Redwall but at the same time not...
So helpful, I know. ;D
They're goooooood.
They're okay.
You're okay. >:(
