Title: Zootopia?
Post by: Ashleg on January 05, 2016, 02:33:47 AM
I don't know about you, but I love animal cartoons. Is anyone else excited for that new Disney movie coming out?
(The one with the fox and the rabbit--aka Zootopia.)
In my personal opinion I think it looks adorable and kinda funny. ;D

Here we can talk about what we think of it and stuff...Ehe.
In case you don't know what I'm talking about you should look up the trailer. ;)

I lucked out on my reserve of enjoyment for animal movies a while back, but the Secret Life of Pets has gotten me pumped!

Oh yess that one too!
I love the part in the trailer where the poodle turns on the rock music. XD

Every time I see the poodle bit, I feel obligated to recognize the fact that I am literally that poodle.  As soon as I'm home alone, on goes the loud music.  Example:  Last time I played Skyrim, I had my phone next to me, so I started playing twenty øne piløts.  Soon enough, I'm fighting dragons while singing quite loudly along to the songs.  :P

And I'm really excited for Zootopia.  I don't care what anyone else says; the sloth preview had me sold.  ;D

What do you call a three-humped camel? ;)

(About the Skyrim and TØP, I think Skyrim's music is great in its own. Jus' saying. But with FO4 you already have awesome 60's music to listen to. ;D)

Yeah, I absolutely love Skyrim's OST, it's just that I was home alone and whenever I'm home alone I really like singing.  Add the fact that my phone was conveniently located close to me because I'd been using it prior to getting on the computer, and you get the reasoning behind why I was listening to hip hop instead of the actual in-game music.  :P

Looks funny. :)  I'll probably wait for a dvd release to rent it before I'd plunk down a lot of money to watch it.  Disney hasn't exactly made stuff I've wanted to see as of late.

Surprised.....99% fresh on rotten tomatoes and really good reviews.  Might be worth seeing on the big screen after all.  I was kind of worried it be heavy-handed on the political/social discrimination jokes but it seems that isn't the case.

I literally got out of the theater five minutes ago and I would definitely go and see it again.  I'm genuinely surprised at how much I enjoyed the film.  There wasn't a single moment where my mind wandered; I was engaged the entire time.  If any of you guys are thinking about seeing it, please do!  It's really good.  ^-^

You mean "Duke Weaselton"?  (I really enjoyed that little Easter egg.  ;D)  Yeah, that guy was awesome.

And yeah, I knew nearly nothing about this film going into it (other than the DMV scene, of course ;)), so it was nice to not know what was going to happen.  Made it much more enjoyable and much funnier, 'cause we all know that they put the funniest bits in the trailers.  ::)

Mm, yeah, I remember seeing the trailer for The Fifth Wave and going, "Well, guess I don't need to see the movie."  It's really annoying when the trailer spoils the whole thing.  Trailers are supposed to make you interested in seeing something, not give you the entire plot, all the plot twists, and show every single punchline.  -_-

...In the process of typing out this post, I suddenly remembered a Studio C video that describes every single annoying trailer ever:

There's some blood in this, so if you don't like blood, you've been warned.  ;)

I recently saw the film and I was surprised at how good it was. Good for an anamorphic animal kids cartoon at least. It looks like they really spent time with the animation and writing.

And boy, those racism themes pointing a big finger right at first world countries. I am doubly surprised a kids movie covered so many big, important problems.
Title: Re: Zootopia?
Post by: Wylder Treejumper on March 29, 2016, 06:57:43 PM
Indeed. I was dubious about the prospect, but Disney played it well and sensitively. It was, overall, a very good movie; more realistic than almost all of Disney's others.

The thing I was most surprised about: DISNEY DIDN'T KILL ANY PARENTS IN IT!!!

My siblings and I had a good time with the snappy dialogue. It provided us many hours of entertainment. That is the hallmark of a good movie.

It would make a pretty good Role play. But it'd have to have a pretty solid story behind it otherwise people get bored too fast.

I expected the movie to be decent (it was by Disney for crying out loud  ::)), but I wasn't ready for it to be as good as it was. I went and saw it again a couple days after the first time. The story was solid, and well played out, the animation was fantastic, and the world was very unique. It's biggest selling point though, was it's characters, they drew me in, they felt real, and they really made you care about their individual stories. My biggest problem would be with the political propaganda they laced through the entire thing, but aside from that, it was a very good movie.

They've always gotta add something, like environment saving, feminism, anti-racism, etc.
Title: Re: Zootopia?
Post by: Wylder Treejumper on April 18, 2016, 10:03:30 PM
True. However, I think they played it delicately and deftly enough that, if you choose, you could consider it solely a plot device and not a social critique. And while it's always good to consider the relevant social critiques, whether you find them accurate is a different matter- but I, at least, try not to dismiss anything out of hand. That may just be my addiction to thinking, though.
Title: Re: Zootopia?
Post by: Wylder Treejumper on June 23, 2016, 01:19:44 AM
So... my family has become a bit addicted to this movie. We preordered it, and since it was released, we've watched it an average of .75 times per day. That means we've watched it more than 5 days out of every week, possibly more (my calculations could be off). I know at least two days where we actually watched it 3 times. For a family that doesn't usually watch movies, that is a huge amount of time. I'm pretty sure we could quote the whole thing verbatim, and we reference it a lot.

And yes, I am watching it as I write this.

I just saw it a few days ago, and it was pretty good. I really liked the whole world and people in it, and how there were somethings that little kids wouldn't get (Try explaining Zuber to a four year old). Along with Finding Dory (which was sooooooooo good) Disney has the animation for this year by a long run.

What I really like about cartoon movies this year is that they're mostly animal themed, which is something we haven't seen in quite a while.

I saw Zootopia when it came out in theaters, and it was really good! I thought it was well portrayed by the characters, and much better than some of Disney's other recent (not so recent by now) films. I also went out to theater's to see Frozen, but the movie had already been completely spoiled for me by YouTube clips I didn't even watch, but that had spoilers in the title! It was basically a waste of money. Zootopia was definitely better, and I have been wanting to go back and watch it again soon, or when it comes out on instant play on Netflix. My favorite character has got to be the chinchilla with Nick in the beginning. ;D

Is water one of the easiest? Lots of old movies have really real looking water!

Title: Re: Zootopia?
Post by: Wylder Treejumper on June 24, 2016, 10:07:00 PM
Well, I think the idea is that because there are no humans, there couldn't be any domesticated animals. Dogs and cats are just domesticated versions of wolves and wildcats, after all.
Title: Re: Zootopia?
Post by: Ashleg on June 26, 2016, 04:53:55 AM
See, that would make sense, except in Disney's other "no human" movies, like Robin Hood, there are dogs and cats aplenty.  ???
Title: Re: Zootopia?
Post by: James Gryphon on June 26, 2016, 05:03:18 AM
Robin Hood was made 40 years ago, and while the characters were zoomorphic versions of Bretons, the film wasn't about that distinction. It wasn't a rigorous "no human" world. Anyway, the new film's called "Zootopia", not "Animaltopia". I'd expect the creatures to be more exotic. ;)

Got predator. I wonder how Zootopia classifies animals that eat other animals but are mostly prey? Like shrews. And how do they distinguish between animals whose main diet is predatory, and eat things like insects or snakes, such as mongooses and anteaters?

And what the heck do all the predators eat at this point? If they don't eat prey animals, is there massive productions of farming and herding of fish and insects?

What I love most about Zootopia (other than its obvious appeal to me as a Redwall fan) is the interaction between Nick and Judy. Of all main characters I know off the top of my head, their dynamic is the best I can think of. They are much fun to write about. Throw in the fact that you can do some great fun plots (because Zootopia is, at its heart, a cop show) and that's why I love it. Nothing weird except the fact that I love writing.

I simply adored this movie.

I honestly thought that it was one of the sweetest and more clever flicks put out by Disney in an actual while (just second to Inside Out -which, then again, cannot be beaten-). I'm not saying that it was perfect, but it left me with a sense of satisfaction that's rare for me to get from modern films... and I appreciate that a lot.

I haven't seen Moana yet. Wondering if I should wait until the DVD becomes a little cheaper. I really don't know very much about it, other than its setting, and so it will be quite a surprise to me when I watch it. I do try to see - and collect - as many Disney animated 'classics' as I can. Much prefer the older films, but at least some decent modern ones, such as Zootopia, are presenting themselves now.

Haha.

Zootopia would have been better had it followed a more traditionally "Disney" route, I feel.

Last night, after I saw the MLP movie, driving home with my mom I commented how I liked that it had a real villain and not somebody like Bellweather.

To prove my point, she went "Who?"

Yeah, no. I liked how the movie took a more subtle- and ultimately more interesting- route. Zootopia is not a musical, its a buddy-cop movie, and I like it that way. Musicals are all well and good, but this one would be a bad fit. Chief Bogo said it best:

Zootopia is the best Disney movie I've even seen, and I've seen The Lion King hundreds of times. This movie was refreshing, in so many ways. Sure it could have been even better, and yes maybe the villain wasn't the best villain, but it was an amazing movie and it didn't need a villain musical number. Also Mr. Big being the villain would have been way too obvious and I definitely prefer the shades of gray and how he worked with Judy and Nick.
Title: Re: Zootopia?
Post by: Wylder Treejumper on October 14, 2017, 01:34:29 AM
Personally I think Bellweather as a villain was brilliant, because you can see why she became a villain. I mean, the inscrutable Voldemort villains can be well and good, but in Zootopia you can understand Bellwether's motivation. She's pushed around by Lionheart, and is basically a laughingstock and puppet. It's easy to see how she could have started off believing she was doing the right thing, and then it slowly devolved into her simply taking power. So yes, definitely not the most intimidating villain, but in my opinion scarier for it. Because in real life, villains are not usually mob bosses or faceless evil folks. They are folks like me and you who have not made the tough choices necessary to live a moral life and have thus been corrupted.

Plus politicians make great villains, because they pretty much are implicitly ::)

Whereas I had no problem with that reveal, I do think there can be too many 'shocking twist! this person's a baddie' outcomes these days (Disney having done it a few times now). I'm ready for a sort of villain for villain's sake again. ;D Or a Claude Frollo 'believable character with depth yet still clearly a villain' styled one.

MR.BIG SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE VILLAIN AND HAD A VILLAIN SONG.
...

Okay I haven't seen Zootopia, but from what I've absorbed about it from this forum and also pop culture, Bellweather as a villain seems perfectly fine and makes a lot of sense? And it ties into the movie's core themes?

I'd be bored if the mob boss turned out to actually be the villain. How much more obvious can you get?

Red herrings and fake-out villains with shadowy figures manipulating everything from behind the scenes have been a staple of fiction since fiction had a name. I do not understand your problem at all. It's definitely not a recent thing. For another animated example, take Hoodwinked, one of the greatest films ever.

I had typed something out, but I don't feel like getting into another argument with you, so I'll just say that my opinion still stands.

And yes, I love Hoodwinked, but Hoodwinked did it right.

Okay.
No argument. Don't have the time nor need for one.
