I haven't, no. Actually, the only Andrew Lloyd Webber show I've seen live is The Phantom of the Opera... six times...in four different cities.

Have you seen it? I'm going to guess... yes.

Shrek was a good movie (the first one, anyway, the second one was okay), but the thought of it being a musical, well... Eh. I'm not so excited about it. Mostly, I like twisted fairy tale stories, like in books and stuff. (Gail Carson Levine and Patricia C. Wrede are good authors for that sort of thing.)

Back on the subject of musicals- what are your opinions on The Wiz?

Here's the ones I've seen professional (not just high school/college) performances of:

Wicked
Saw it when they were on tour.  It was on the day of the worst blizzard of the year, and the smoke alarm went off in the middle of No Good Deed.  The actress (an understudy, not even the main one) didn't even skip a beat, just kept singing until they came on the loudspeaker telling us to evacuate the buliding.  So we stood outside in the hail for half an hour until the fire department came and declared the building clear.  They just restarted it in the middle of the song - had the stage dark and the actress come out of the darkness and restart in the middle of the song.

101 Dalmatians the Musical
I was fortunate to see this as it was short-lived; the actress playing Cruella left for family reasons and they didn't think they could get someone as perfect to replace her.  I saw it on about its 5th day of performances - I have pictures of the theater marquee saying "World Premiere".
It's based more on the book than the movies.  The sets are big and the people playing the human characters are on stilts and wearing bright colors, while the people playing the dogs look more "normal" to us.
This is my favorite song from it, "Twilight Barking".  I like it for the melody and I also thought it was a cool way to represent the Twilight Barking spreading across the country.  (The music starts at about 58 seconds into the video if you want to skip the talking till then.  The rest is all the song, it's a good long one.)

I didn't even know there was a 101 Dalmatians musical. Those stilts look difficult, props to those actors for walking around like that all night!

I've also seen Wicked, though I never experienced a fire alarm during one of the most dramatic songs in the show. Yikes! I saw it twice in Melbourne and three times in Japan. Ebata Masae is my favourite Elphaba, she was phenomenal live.

The quality isn't great, but you get the idea. :)

I can't stand musicals ... like Shakespeare, it's partly because I was forced to study Annie in school and partly because I find them rather silly (normal people don't go around bursting into song in real life, so it breaks any kind of illusion of the story) ... BUT I do quite like the old movie musicals like the original Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Mary Poppins, Doctor Dolittle, etc.  :)
Title: Re: Musicals
Post by: Lily on April 16, 2013, 07:56:43 AM
I can definitely see why musicals aren't everyone's cup of tea. I certainly get weird looks when I tell some people that I like them. I usually find that the things people find silly about musicals are what I like about them! It doesn't bother me that people randomly break into song because I know it's not real life I'm watching. Also, I just really like music. I think my favourite place to be is in a theatre watching a musical.

Haha, I wish real life were a musical. An Australian satirical TV show used to have a segment called, "If Life Were a Musical". This guy would go out on public and sing about how he needed a hammer or something.

Romsca, good luck with your audition later this year!

I do like musicals, now that I come to think of it. My family watches lots of musicals, but sometimes we skip some of the songs. :)

These are some of the musicals that I've seen

Plays: Beauty and the Beast, The Man of Lamancha, Hello Dolly, The Scarlet Pimpernel, and The Wizard of Oz.

Movies: Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Kiss me, Kate, The Sound of Music, Fiddler on the Roof, Mary Poppins, Guys and Dolls, Calamity Jane, and Annie Get Your Gun

I just got back from Tokyo where I saw Ocean's 11 as a musical. I'm not a not a big fan of the actress that played Danny Ocean, but I still enjoyed it.

Here is a video to prove that it really does exist. What will Japanese people think of next? ;)

Title: Re: Musicals
Post by: Rusvul on April 28, 2013, 11:45:15 AM
That's pretty crazy :P. Are there only women in that musical? Interesting. I would have never thought of turning Ocean's Eleven into a musical, I've only seen part of it, but from what I've heard it's very heist-y.
Title: Re: Musicals
Post by: Lily on April 28, 2013, 03:50:14 PM
Yep, all women. Takarazuka is an all-female theatre troupe here in Japan. They've done adaptations of all kinds of western works as well as completely original pieces. I'm not sure what made them turn Ocean's 11 into a musical, but it's probably not the strangest thing they've ever done!
Title: Re: Musicals
Post by: Maudie on May 08, 2013, 06:30:14 PM
I was just thinking about musicals. Well, some people say that they are stupid 'cause people just don't go around singing songs all the time. I must say that that is not true for everyone, 'cause I break out into song all the time (it's usually a Redwall song). But I must agree that people usually don't converse through songs unless they are playing a game. Did any of that make sense?

^ Ooh, cool! I've been to quite a few over the years. I like to see one a year if I can at least. :) Which ones have you seen?

We didn't get that many musicals where I grew up in Australia, so I haven't seen as many as I'd like. I made a list. I like lists.
- Les Miserables (Amateur production in Canberra)
- My Fair Lady (Opera Australia)
- Chicago (Sydney)
- The Phantom of the Opera (Melbourne, Sydney x3, Osaka, Kyoto)
- Wicked (Melbourne x2, Osaka, Fukuoka, Nagoya)
- The Sound of Music (Osaka)
...and a whole bunch of Takarazuka shows that no one outside Japan (except other Takarazuka fans) has ever heard of, probably. ;) I've been... 8 times this year alone.

I have tickets to see Romeo and Juliette (again) and Dracula in August. I am so excited about Dracula, I love Frank Wildhorn and I haven't had a chance to see any of his stuff live yet. ;D

What have you seen, MeadowRabbit? Your list is probably a lot more varied than mine. I've just seen the same shows over and over again because there's generally only one or two big shows touring Australia at once. And I kind of followed Wicked all over Japan. Eh heh.
Title: Re: Musicals
Post by: MeadowR on July 24, 2013, 01:02:33 PM
That's a good list there! :D I haven't seen The Sound of Music at the theatre, but the 1965 film is my most favourite live-action film.

I'll only list musicals I've seen that were 'official' touring shows. In other words, I won't get in to amateur and school productions of musicals I have seen because it gets confusing! I'm bound to forget some so I'll have to keep coming back to it...

Blood Brothers
Cats
Doctor Dolittle
Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde
Footloose
Hairspray
Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
Mamma Mia!
Miss Saigon
Oliver!
Phantom of the Opera
Starlight Express
Tell Me On A Sunday
The Lion King

My favourite Musicals are Phantom of the Opera Les Miserable ( which I went and saw on the stag in London  ;D )
I also like Wicked and Cats  not as much as the others but a bite I also like some older musicals like  Seven brides for seven Brothers and Calamity Jane and a few others which I can't remember  ;D

Ohhh, Jekyll and Hyde? That's one of my favourite musicals that I haven't seen! Just listening to the concept recording was powerful, it must have been awesome on stage.

I love the Sound of Music film too. I wore out the VHS tape I had of it as a kid! I went to see it with a friend who has also loved it since she was little and we had a really great time reliving our childhoods and wishing we were Maria.

Rachel, I remember you mentioning somewhere else that you saw Les Mis recently. I'm jealous, someone I really like is playing Eponine at the moment!

I must admit Jekyll and Hyde I don't remember being hugely impressed by it. It was well done but just not memorable enough, I suppose. :o To be fair... this was 2005, I believe, and at that point it was new. So I'm sure they've advanced it since!

Miss Saigon I wasn't too interested in, either. 'Tell Me On A Sunday' isn't so exciting story wise, but it's so impressive that it's just one actress as the whole cast, singing continuously! and it was not boring. :)

Wow, there was a 101 Dalmatians musical? Haha, fun. Shame it didn't last then!

The revived it on Broadway recently, but the production closed after only 29 performances and 15 previews. Apparently it sounds fantastic (to me, anyway) but doesn't do too well on stage!

I love the animated Disney classics too. Beauty and the Beast is my favourite.

Aaayyy, musicals! I love musicals. Haven't seen very many, but I do love them.

My current favorites are Beauty and the Beast (2017) and Les Miserables. My favorite song from BatB is Evermore, and my favorite song from Les Mis is Bring Him Home, with ABC Cafe/the Red and Black song as a close second.

Also, I really like this Les Mis medley by Peter Hollens.

I've actually been really into Disney musicals lately as well. I love Moana and Hercules especially.

Hercules is really good.

I honestly love musicals, but my all time favorite one is The Rocky Horror Picture Show (which... I'll go ahead and advise the majority of you not to ever watch, let's put it like that...). I also wanna see the Broadway version of The Lion King sometime; I've heard all the songs and seen some of the performances and it's beautiful (and The Lion King was my favorite film for most of my life, if it isn't to this day).

I've been to more at the theatre since that 2013 (probably incomplete) list of mine:

Billy Eilliot
War of the Worlds (brillianttttt experience!)
Mary Poppins
The Sound of Music
Something Rotten (on Broadway!)
The Buddy Holly Story

All very well done!!

Obviously I've also seen a lot of musicals through their film versions (such as Disney's many Classics!). The Rocky Horror Picture Show, as Andy mentions, is good! But, yeah... not everybody's cup of tea. XD

I do keep hearing about Hamilton. In fact, that was one we were considering going to see when we decided to go and see Something Rotten instead (which was good and amusing). Perhaps Hamilton will come to the West End at some point. Even better if it were to tour. :)

My fav musical is Hamilton. It's incredible. It's something different. The lyrics are incredibly well-written and the hip-hop pairs extremely well with the orchestra.
