Guosim, ahhh, they are interesting. I noticed we didn't have a topic about them. And I wanted to talk about them.
So do any of you have a favorite Log-a-Log? I think my favorite would have to be the first Log-a-Log in Redwall.
Also, in Lord Brocktree they refer to Log-a-Log Grenn as a girl. Is she the only girl Log-a-Log?
I really liked the Log-a-log in Marlfox.
My favorite Log-a-log is the one in both Redwall and Mattimeo. I also like the one from the Long Patrol too.
I liked Lohg-a-Log Grenn
Wot aboat Log-a-log Dandy Cloggz?
I was never really a fan of the gousim. I always thought they were annoying, yet they were key to the success of the stories

Aye, me neither. Juzt be glad they werenae pigmy zhrewz!
Log-a-log Dandy Cloggs was cool! I also like the Log-a-log in Rakkety Tam. :) I don't like how the Guosim talk in the tv shows, though. They seem a lot more annoying on tv than in the books. I also don't like that they have about 3 outfits, and all of them wear one of the three outfits. :P
I assume we're speaking of Guosim the group, not Guosim the character.
As a group, I didn't find them as particularly necessary. I always felt with otters in the stories, you had the natural water-animals already present to handle water travel. Yeah, I smile when I hear "Logalogalogalogalog!" but as a group, I don't see how the shrews as a group, were much different than the Long Patrol or any other group of Redwallers. The sense of difference with Guosim law (the pebble thing) was lost after the first few books.
All the Log-A-Log have been great in all the books! :)
I like Log-a-log Grenn, and the Log-a-log in Marlfox. ;D
And, yeah, I think Grenn was the only female Log-a-log.
I quite like Log-A-Log Big Club. It was really funny when he whacked that newt on the tail and it fell off!
Yeh, that was amusing. ;D

Me and my siblings have contest to see who can shout log-a-log the best. So we sound like:
"Logalogalogalog....."
I like the two little Guosim in the Sable Queen.
My favorite Log-a-Log? I would have to say Log-a-Log Togey from Rakkety Tam is my favorite. He tried to be very serious and stoic, but he was just a big Dibbun at heart. :D
And he had awesome facial hair.
My favorite Log a Log would be either him or the Log a log from Redwall and Mattimeo.
I never had a favorite Log-a-Log, but I always preferred the guosim from the first Redwall book - like a soviet union type group. Hilarious and cute all at once! ;D
I like the Log-a-log (Togey, I think?) in Loamhedge who made Horty work really hard for insulting him. Serves Horty right. But it was great when Horty won the bragging contest with that other Guosim guy. :)
my favorite log a log is probly the one that saves the dibbun then dies and his son and the gousim start singing that bloody song at their foes in eulalia! And I think shrews are essential but their numbers die the most :'(
I thought there was already a topic for this

That's too bad. :-\
I know, one time he hid all of my books!
I'm afraid I cannot sympathize; I'm bigger and stronger than my older brother, who doesn't like the books, and I'd mop the floor with him if he hid me books.
The Gousim have always seemed to me kind of annoying (more so in the animated show) and unneeded. Seems like Brian saw it as well, 'cause I don't remember any of the main, main characters who were shrews.
I hated the Guosim in the TV series! THEY WERE HORRIBLE! They were so unsympathetic to Mathias and Martin that it was.....just terrible!

That was a great Log-a-log he play a key part in that book.
I like the one in Mattimeo the best
I really liked Log-a-Log Grenn and the Log-a-Log from Marlfox.
Which book was Log-a-Log Grenn in?
Has anyone ever wondered why some log-a-logs are just named Log-a-Log and others have a surname thing?
well the Log-A-Log is the chief. once that chief passes it to another shrew he becomes Log-A-Log
Guosim are given a distinct look which I like. Like in a few of the books there are characters that seem a bit unnecessary, like that mole that goes along with Dotti and Brock, so I don't think that the shrews are less needed than other characters. The way they are sets them apart some more, their attitudes aren't just one set type, from Doomwyte we know some can be particularly nasty. I have made a Guosim character even (see avatar!), so yeah, I feel enough that they have some value. :D
I've never been a fan of the Guosim. I find them kinda annoying and just like most of the hares they all pretty much have the same personality(well the Log-a-logs do). But, I haven't read all the books, so... But, if I have to chose a favorite Guosim shrew, it'll be Dippler from Marlfox.

Grenn was from
Lord Brocktree. I think she was the only Log-a-log who was female.

I like the log-a-log from Rakkety Tam.
That's the way to settle things, with democratic and sensible debate.
Aye. It looked so democratic and sensible, I thought they were all going to knock each others heads off!-Log-a-Log and Tam!
So, I know people have been curious on the log boats that the Guosim use, and look what I found:
Logboat!
I always saw The Guosim as Brian's subtle way of poking fun at America. With our democratic debates (Arguments) and policies that make no sense.
And even a American has to admit that its hilariously similar.
^^Well, that was beyond me.
@Skarz: Uh, that may be how Brian first envisoined them but later on in the books they start getting described as proper boats, especially in Loamhedge. Just saying, it's still a nice photo.
*Grabs Sage by the shirt.* It'safreakinglogboatsodealwithit.
Hate to break it to you Skarzs, but "true" logboats don't have afts or prows.
You lot are impossible.
It also states multiple times that the logboats have seats in them. Well Skarzs, looks like this one won't work, you're gonna have to find another photo ;D
How does that work? I tried drawing them.
Well, in
Marlfox the Guosim actually replace their logboats with new boats:
Quote from: Dippler at the end of Marlfox[...] No more logboats fer us, we're goin' to build new vessels, light an' swift an' easy t' carry overland. [...]
Maybe before that they actually had true logboats, but afterwards they've actually been using regular boats, but just kept calling them "logboats" out of habit?

Not to be nitpicky, but those "seats" were just planks wedged in the hull.
I know that they were just planks, it's not like they were big, cozy chairs with armrests and cushions. :P
::)
What else would you use for a seat in a boat? A beanbag? ;D
Maybe they did do that somewhere later ;)
The seats could have been made of webbed cane or a strong fabric and attached to the logboats after they were made, instead of being built into them. The seats of two of my family's canoes are made of webbing.
I was only a fan of the Guosim in a few books. Other than that, I never really liked them for various reasons
I liked the shrews as shrews, not as Guosim. They seemed to sometimes get along well, other times endlessly arguing. Either way, they were inconsistent, and I didn't like that.
