Title: Amazing outdoors photos
Post by: Izeroth on February 03, 2015, 04:05:02 AM
You can post any picture here, so long as it's outdoors and complies with the forum rules. If you can, please post where the photo was taken.

How do they happen?

I'm pretty sure it's when a tornado crosses a significant source of fire, like an exploded oil tanker.

Just curious, do you know why the ice formed like that?
Title: Re: Amazing outdoors photos
Post by: The Skarzs on February 09, 2015, 11:48:10 PM
That's not ice. It's mineral buildup composited by centuries of the mineral-rich water, acids, and/or bases common of most hot springs.
Title: Re: Amazing outdoors photos
Post by: Mhera on February 10, 2015, 01:23:05 AM
No, it's ice. Pamukkale is a hot spring, so ice just formed around the pools.
Title: Re: Amazing outdoors photos
Post by: Izeroth on February 10, 2015, 01:26:49 AM
I'm pretty sure it's a buildup of calcium, but I don't know. Considering that the country around it is arid, it wouldn't make a great deal of sense for there to be ice on it.

It's the color, I believe. The resemblance ends there.
Interesting thing to know about banana slugs: if you get stung by stinging nettles, rub the slime of the banana slug on it and it helps. That or you can use the spore side of a sword fern.

The brine shrimp get everywhere and the bottom of the lake is squishy. Not to mention I got salt water up my nose and almost drown. Also the brine flies (I think that's they're called) stick to you after you get out of the lake, and the bathrooms are full of giant spiders. Not the best experience...

Quote from: Izeroth on February 14, 2015, 04:00:34 PMThe bridge was formed over millions of years as a result of erosion.

According to Rand McNally (in the map, atlas and globe business for travel and educational purposes for nearly 160 years - to me, a credible source), "the natural bridge...was formed by wind and erosion consistently over millions of years."  These aren't the only factors that often go into the making of natural phenomena, but it doesn't seem that Izeroth is speaking incorrectly or inventing 'facts.'  His description is almost verbatim the original.  (Source: http://blog.randmcnally.com/2011/04/29/natural_bridge_state_resort_park/)
Also, the continental ice sheets of the last glacial period, ending 10-12kya, never reached as far south into Kentucky as the state park.  I just googled some maps for that.

So, *looks pointedly at you all one by one* if you see something you question, fact-check, and if you want to explain something, cite your source.  All right, guys, thanks for the fun.

@Banya yes, Mask is right. Our "problem" is that while we also believe in science, we interpret it through the framework that the Bible provides (i.e. the earth was created by God in six days, a world wide flood did occur, the dispersion from Babel was a real event, etc.). I too would love to talk about this, but you're correct in saying that this is not the place. PM me or start another thread, I am absolutely open to discussion on this topic :).

Yeah, these columns, called columnar basalt, were formed when a lava flow contracted as it cooled and created those cracks in the shape of tall columns. It really is an amazing formation.

This is the Cave of Crystals in Mexico, which contains some of the largest crystals in the world. The cave is so hot that it's dangerous for a person to stay in the intense heat for more than 10 minutes without protective equipment.

I'm glad that you both liked my hometown, girls :)

That's amazing, Banya!

Bariloche is a dream come true. Incredibly snowy and whitey on winter, almost selvatic on summer, the city is placed in the exact borderline of civilization... if you keep going to the south you will eventually find another towns and even a large province, but you can't really walk nor drive further than this point. It is just magical.

Also, did you know that the students on Chile and Argentina (the city is placed within the Argentinean limits, btw) have made a tradition to go there on their last year of high school?

Are you from somewhere along the Appalachian range?  You don't need to name your state if you don't want to, though I'm curious.  I few years ago I took a long road trip and visited countless waterfalls throughout Maryland, West Virginia and the Carolinas.  It was the best trip I've ever been on.

Awesome!  That's a gorgeous state!  I've been to Kentucky several times and I love driving through the mountains and seeing limestone ridges that border the highway.  I spent two nights in Kentucky earlier this month while I was on spring break, but both times we drove through the state at night, unfortunately.  Oh, and congratulations on Kentucky's bracket success!

No, bluebonnets are wildflowers. They pop up in Texas during the spring (they're the state flower), but I can't say fields like that are common. This is more typical:

Good to know, @Rillbrook the Wanderer. Nice to see ya around again, too.
