I doubt there's anyone on here who loves LotR as much as I do!
Oh Sure! :P Wanna bet!? I LLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOVVVVVVVEEEEEESSSSSSSSS it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D
Looking forward to the Hobbit!
Don't worry people, the mayens were just counting down to the Hobbit movie. I just know I'm gonna Die before the second half comes out...

Who's your favorite character? Mine are Eowyn and Faramir.
I like it, but I've never finished Return of the King. I'm re-reading them now, and this time I'm going to finish them.
My dad holds that his favorite character is Faramir, but I don't want to form an opinion until I've finished them.
I only watch the movies ;D
I've seen the movies and have them on Blu-ray and DVD. As for my favorite character I like Gimli and Legolas and Gandalf.
LegoLas!!! ;D

You haven't read the books?!?!?!
SHAME!!!!
I read the Hobbit which is why I'm so fired up for the movie :P
You can be a fan of The Lord of the Rings movies and still say you're a fan of the series. There's a difference, to be sure, but you can still be a fan of the series. For instance, I'm a true Redwall fan but I don't like the TV series (much).
The Lord of the Rings movie series is it's own beast, considering all the merchandising and fanbase that branches off from it.
I'm a fan of the movies and the books. The books are my favorite, because they have Tom Bombadil in them.
I read the Hobbit and it was awesome!
It is possible to be a fan of the movies and still say you're a fan of the series, but you're missing out. They totally make Aragorn less awesome in the movies for one thing. Too many elves died in the movies. Arwen. :P That's all I'm going to say about that. And no Tom Bombadill! That's got to be the worst strike against the movie.
Good job, Danflorreguba!
For what?
I agree, they did make him less awesome in the movies, but I think they actually did that on accident. I felt that the movies focused too much on Aragorn, and made him seem better than he was, which then spread into overkill and almost made you get tired of him.
The movie wasn't as dramatic as the book, wich really buged me.
Sometimes you can't portray the same emotions through a screen as you can through a book.
I know, but I really liked the dramatic parts:(
Like I already stated, you can't portray the same emotions
I know *sigh...*
Lord of the Rings is beast.
GET OFF MY TOPIC!!!!! how ya doin', bro?
Don't hate me cos I'm cooler than you.

Your brain kicks in at 9:00 A.M. You must REALLYYYYY be sleep deprived to not be able to have a snappy comeback (So much for TLOTR) :D

I do my best to make intellectual responses as opposed to snappy comebacks. Snappy comebacks can be funny on the surface, but tend to be base and hurt peoples' view of a person.
I have not read the books, but I have seen all the extended versions and played some of the games.

Yes, same here.Although if you say things the right way it isn't even a snappy comeback but just a humerous observation... That is my style.
Just a warning guys, let's keep things nice and on topic. If you want to be random, go to Kotir's Ruins (aka, the Cellars). It's important to be respectful and nice to other forum member, even if you don't like them.
I actually saw the movies before reading the books, so I don't have many complaints regarding differences. . . Sorry!

I'm half way through The Hobbit and have watched the first film. So, while I'm new to the series, I can already guarentee I'm going to love this series. Anyone else collect the models? My brother does and I might start doing it as well.
I just saw a trailer for the first part of The Hobbit...I can't wait! I'm going to have to reread the book again before the movie comes out!
Maybe I'll watch the cartoon version of the hobbit tomorrow.

I like the music in LOTR
Ditto.
Yup, the music is awesome.
Here's something interesting, The Hobbit movie will be shot at 48 frames per second. All movies since about the 1920s have been shot at 24fps. The human eye sees at about 60ish fps. So this means that the movie is going to look exceptionally life-like. It will also reduce the headaches and sore eyes caused by viewing films in 3D.
While this may sound awesome, there are quite a few negatives. For instance, the animated parts will look more noticeably fake than they normally would. Also, quite a few cinemas might not be able to show it at 48fps anyway (they'll show it at 24fps).
This article (http://www.forbes.com/sites/anthonykosner/2012/04/28/the-hobbit-at-48fps-too-much-information-and-the-science-of-eye-movement/) is the best one I've managed to find which explains all this.
This is all pretty revolutionary. It's never been done before. Some are comparing it to the step in to colour TV. James Cameron says it's "the future of cinema". We'll see. I, for one, will probably see it at both 48fps in 3D and 24, just to compare the two.
Interesting! :o

Yeah! They look pretty cool! I'm not really in to legos, but i may buy a set just for LOTR. And yup, they are pretty accurate, except for the fact the helm's deep is only two lego people tall. XD
One other thing, They got that Urak-Hai with the torch wrong, he had oodles of armor! :D
In one of the games the torch bearer has on armor.
I'm looking forward to the LotR Legos, and hoping fervently for a Meduseld to go with all those Rohirrim.
I lovvve LoTR I just started the first book but, I've read the Hobbit. Where I live they just did a play on the Hobbit and my brother and I went and saw it. They did great!!!!!!!!!

I recently bought the Lego set "Gandalf Arrives" because it was really cheap (well, for a Lego product). I've forgotten how fun it is to play with! It is pretty accurate as well, although I still don't understand why there is a carrot... Anyway, love the set and hope to buy more. Eagerly anticipating the game, I've seen parts of it which they showed at E3 on YouTube and it looks really awesome. Can't wait.
Yeah, I really want to play the Lego game! But the one creepy thing about it is the fact that the characters talk. That's really different.

If I remember correctly, some details about their ancestors can be found in The Silmarillion in the Tale of Beren and Luthien.
Elros, the first king of Numenor, and Elrond are brothers. Elendil is descended from Numenorean Kings and quite a few KoG and Dunedain Chiefs are leading down to Aragorn.
They are also related to Eärendil, the morning star.
Er, I don't believe you can be related to a Silmaril...
Yeah, but Eärendil pilots the ship that has the Silmaril on it.

Speaking of Which,
Am I the only one who knows this exists?
(You can find the full movie in parts on dailymotion)
I've seen those! (Don't know if I *technically* finished watching them since I tuned out from time to time while the siblings watched... but yeah.)
(By the way, double-posting is frowned upon in boards that count posts. Just so you know in future. :))
Yes.
What do you think it's going to be about? Are they going to have him tell some of his stuff, and "illustrate" them, while at the same time showing his life?
Good question. The IMDb synopsis says: "Tolkien explores the formative years of the orphaned author as he finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a group of fellow outcasts at school." I'm afraid they're going to try and draw too many false one-to-one comparisons between his life and his works, though. *sigh* Oh well, I'm still more excited for this than Endgame right now. ;D
I keep wishing that the movie will turn out to be like The Man Who Invented Christmas and have Tolkien's characters being played by real people and talking to him. Oh my word, I'd SCREAM. I'm giddy just thinking about how cool that'd be. Silmarillion characters on the big screen?! Shut up and take my money!!!
What would be more possible, imo, is there being fantasy sequences as he writes, showing how his stories go. Which would still be flipping awesome 'cause we might possibly get glimpses of Silm characters.
Whatever happens, I'm gonna be freaking out over the Silmarillion references that'll exist. Maybe this movie will get more people to read it. ;D
You're weird yo. :-|

yeah its Tolkien's best work in my opinion...
Technically the book itself wasn't done by Tolkien, but all the stories were. They were compiled by his son, I believe.

FOTR is a hard book to read honestly :P I don't blame you for wanting to stop it in the middle. I believe it is the kind of book that gets better on the second reading, because when reading 5 pages that feel like fluff, you realize that they are actually setting up something.

Who are your guy's top ten favorite lotr characters and why?
*Glorfindel, because... I've read some really cool fanfictions with him and, in them, he has a fantastic sense of humour. (that and he's the perfect target for pranks)
*Halbarad, because, again, there are some cool fanfictions about him and because he's a very minor character that most people don't care about.
**Elladan and Elrohir, because of their close sibling relationship and the fact that they actually care about humans, which I appreciate. (and 'cause of fanfictions)
*Erestor because he's a scholar and would be able to tell me lots of stories. (if I spoke Sindarin fluently, which I don't)
*Lindir because he writes songs and looks after horses, both qualities I respect in a beast.
*Radagast (spelling?) because he's... well, himself.
*Namo, because I have to involve at least one of the Valar in this list and she's the only one I can remember the name of. (Plus she was generally quite a nice person and there's a really cool quote involving her)
*Eru, because he created Middle-Earth, Valinor and everything else within that world.
*Durin, because there is a really cool song about him.
*is pleased that I managed to list ten characters without choosing the 'typical' ones*
Radagast the brown! is so typical! he is like one of the coolest characters! like, ever!
Whatever. He can't be overlooked, even if he is liked by everybeast.
What are your guys' thoughts on the Hobbit movies? Personally, I can see why the hardcore book fans might dislike it, but I thought they were pretty good. But maybe that's just me. ^-^
why do they dislike it? I really loved the movies, and I think most of my family do to, sure they missed some bits, and added others, but over all they are very good!
The extended versions are good, the cinema versions aren't really worth seeing when the extended version is available.
The second Hobbit movie is one of the worst things I've ever seen. It would be completely unwatchable if it didn't have the bits with Smaug in it. It's just a bunch of action scenes clumsily strung together with no connecting plot, the romance is the worst, and Alfrid's character is completely pointless.
how so? I don't think any of the characters are "pointless", maybe week, but not pointless.
His only purpose in the story is to menace Bard for a bit. After that he does literally nothing, has no character arc, he's just there for comic relief. Which would be fine if he was actually funny, but he isn't. (Alfrid is the sneaking weasel servant of the Master of Lake Town).
I never thought about it that way, but he is an example of what not to do! XD
It's certainly not the best movie in the world but it's not the worst either. Even if it is basically action all the way through, the action has been pretty well done. Romance is not the point of the movie, story or any other part of it so it doesn't need to be perfect. (In my opinion, it doesn't need to be there at all) As for Alfrid, I agree with you wholeheartedly. He's a completely useless fop and I don't even know why he's there. Still, he's a minor character and his incompetence shouldn't detract much from the movie.
The action scenes are not well done at all imo. And actually the romance is a point of the movie, though it shouldn't be, and that whole plotline is completely stupid and poorly done.
One of the only problems I have with The Hobbit films was the CGI. For movies that were released not very long ago they looked quite unreal every other minute.
The thing with The Hobbit movies is that they made changes to make it relevant to LotR, whereas many of the things either weren't major parts of The Hobbit, or weren't there at all. And The Battle of the Five Armies was only two pages or something in the book, but a lot longer in the film. Not all the changes were bad, and I suppose that part of the point was to make it longer, but some were unnecessary.
I actually don't think the movies were that bad.
nor I. I really enjoyed them, though, some parts did irk me.. buuut, over all they are great movies, not as good as the books, but that's just my option..

Who would ever want movies or TV when there are books?
Whilst I agree that books are preferably to both of those alternatives, there is a place for movies and TV.
I agree with Teer. I like movies and TV shows, when they're interesting and done well.
Although I can't say I enjoyed the first Hobbit movie, so much so that I never finished it and I haven't seen the other two. (There's a chance I watched the first one and couldn't get through the second, I can't remember exactly now that I'm thinking about it, but that in and of itself says something) I was just..... Extremely bored with all the violence and action. There was too much for my tastes and not enough plot. Shame, really, I liked The Hobbit more than The Lord of the Rings. (Bookwise)
I think it would be hard to make the movies better, though. There is a lot of action in the book, but it's different because, rather than just seeing action, you know what people are thinking and why they're doing what they're doing. In a movie, you can only see what's going on on the outside, so it just seems like unnecessary violence and a lot of yelling. The movies could have been a lot worse.
indeed, and at lest they tryed to show what was going on..
That is simply not true. The majority of the boring action in the Hobbit films was added into the movies to pad out the runtime and justify having three parts, it was never in the book. And most of it is just ridiculous and over the top.
nonsense, they had to cut allot out, and that still left three parts, and as for pointless actshon, in the book it could be summed up in a paragraph, but in the movie they needed to bring it to life, and give the characters more...well character...
This could become a rather heated argument. Maybe we should just talk about Radagast or something.
it's fine, I don't think anybeast is in any way upset...

For the first movie: Everything with Radagast and being chased by orcs doesn't happen. Fight in the goblin cave is much less... video game-y. "Out of the frying pan" scene has no fight.
Second movie: Barrel scene has no fight. Battle in Lake Town doesn't happen. Battle with Smaug doesn't happen.
The third movie is the only one that's somewhat justified, because the battle happened in the book, we just didn't see it because Bilbo was unconscious.
Yeah, in the book The Battle of the Five Armies was probably not even two pages.
One thing to remember is that movies and books have different story structures and such. Each can get away with certain things, and sometimes film makers need to add/take out scenes while making adaptions. Not saying The Hobbit films were perfect, but some changes were understandable imo.
Any update on the LOTR TV show?
I'm the star of the show! Just kidding. No.
I think LOTR is one of the best movie series of all time. I adore all three, but Return of the King does have too many rousing speeches and the ending lasts 30 minutes (or at least it feels that way). Also, while I like The Battle at Minas Tirith, the last battle is boring. But the characters are great, it's satisfying and does have many amazing moments.
Sounds about right
