Title: how does cornflower die?
Post by: mattimouse20 on July 20, 2012, 08:12:30 AM
What happens to cornflower? Does she die of old age?

It's presumed (and possibly mentioned in the Pearls of Lutra, but I am not certain) that she dies of old age, yes.

That's sad.  :'(she was so pretty in the series.

It was inevitable that she would die at some time. However, she had a good life (despite problems caused by Cluny, Slagar and Ironbeak), so I'm sure she had no regrets on her deathbed and she could pass away peacefully, knowing that he Abbey and her loved ones will have happy and safe lives.

It would have been far more sad if she hadn't died of old age.

if you watch the intro of the third season to redwall, martin the warrior, look closely at the scene where matthias speaks and you'll see cornflower for a brief second. she's actually aged quite a bit since the last two seasons.

I don't find her getting old and passing away disturbing.  That's nature, and it's the most peaceful way somebody can go.  Anyone is lucky to live to an old age and pass away gently.

It was old age, the same with Martin and Matthias.

Yes, I agree, aging is not disturbing. It is a continuing opportunity to learn and give of your ever-improving self. I believe that is what Cornflower did throughout her life. She died peacefully because of her efforts, and the efforts of others like her, to maintain peace for the future. It's all good.

Well, let's see... it's a dagger we're talking about right?  ::)

There's the eyes which really have nothing between them and the brain, and then there's the blood vessels on the neck... shall I continue? ::)

Erm, there are no ghosts in Redwall. Martin's spirit, yes, but he has no physical form, and only speaks in people's heads. He's a spirit, not a ghost.

Here, HeadInAnotherGalexy, let me continue the story in a way that will make you happy:

Matthias all of a sudden felt a sudden rush of pain, causing him to fall to his knees. He turned to see three arrows sticking out of his back. He was put out of his misery by another arrow that thudded in his neck. Cornflower screamed. A huge wave of weasels were in the abbey! And they all had daggers and bow and arrows!
Cornflower started running. She could feel arrows zipping by all around her. An arrow caught her in the footpaw, which made her yell "FLICHEYE ATTACK!!!!!"
Constance came running into the room. "What in the name of Martin is going on arou-uggg!"
The big Badger fell dead, twenty-seven arrows sticking out of her.
All of the commotion brought all the Redwallers out to  Great Hall, were all the weasels were. Instantly, a quarter of them fell to the ground, looking like pin cushions due to all the arrows.
A rather tall weasel, who appeared to be the Flicheye leader, stood up and yelled "We Kille 'em all, make 'em alle dead, oof!"
He fell to the ground, silenced by a stunning blow from Basil Stag Hair. But as Basil brought his foot down, he was surprised to find that It was full of arrows. "Why, those bally weasel chaps have ruined by best fooagggg!!!!"
He was instantly silenced by sixteen well-aimed arrows.
The Redwallers fought the Flicheye the best they could, but they were no match to the weasel's great numbers and all there bows and arrows. Abbot Mordalfus was about to yell retreat, but as soon as he opened his mouth, it was filled to the brim with Flicheye arrows.
The Redwallers tried to get to the front door of the Abbey, but those who didn't pull back in time were each hit with dozens of arrows. They then knew that they would have to fight on and try to take as many Weasels with them.
Cornflower, who looked more like a pin cushion that herself, came up to Tess Churchmouse, who had only been hit six times with arrows, and said "Tess, take all the Dibbuns and take them out of here! We'll distract the Flicheye while your at. Now go!"
Tess, who had been hit with another three arrows while listening to Cornflower, ran off and collected all the Dibbuns. Thanks to fates, none of them were hurt. They then ran off out the main Abbey gate, but halfway through the lawn, she realized that she was missing a young Otter from the group. "You Dibbuns, stay here!" She yelled, running  back into the Abbey to get the other Dibbuns. She returned a few minutes later, though she had been hit with a lot more arrows when rescuing the little Otter. She collapsed to the ground, then yelled "You Dibbuns, run into the woods! I'm not going to make it, I've been hit with too many arrows. Now go!"
The Dibbuns ran out the main Abbey gate. Tess watched them until here eyes closed forever.

Back in the Abbey, the Flicheye had done there work. There wasn't one Redwaller alive. The Flicheye leader, as much as he was banged up from the battle, smiled over his work. Redwall was his! Though, it wouldn't be called Redwall anymore; It would be called Flichwall! And to think, he would be high ruler over it!

I know, its a eye gruesome, but hey, its an idea! ;D What do you think, HeadInAnotherGalexy? What about the rest of you guys?

Erm... My opinion is, it wouldn't happen. How would one sneaky weasel turn into an entire horde? And I don't think the Flitchaye even had bows... And Hiag, I'm just talking about violence to that one weasel. I have nothing against weasels in general.

He didn't turn into a giant horde! He was the one who snuck into Redwall and opened some door. But we was taken out by Matthias. But that was not the case for the rest of the Flicheye...And it is possible that they could have made bows and arrows.... ;)

Erm, my complaint is that you have written EVERY SINGLE ABBEYBEAST dying. Like, in war, not one by one of old age. At least you didn't directly kill the dibbuns, though, really, what chance do they have, out alone in Mossflower?

I'll probably have them wander unto Squire Julian Gingervier's land, were he takes care of them until they grow up and come back to reclaim the Abbey.

I think these are some of the funniest parts of Ungatt's story!

Quote
Constance came running into the room. "What in the name of Martin is going on arou-uggg!"
The big Badger fell dead, twenty-seven arrows sticking out of her.

Quote
He fell to the ground, silenced by a stunning blow from Basil Stag Hair. But as Basil brought his foot down, he was surprised to find that It was full of arrows. "Why, those bally weasel chaps have ruined by best fooagggg!!!!"
He was instantly silenced by sixteen well-aimed arrows.

Quote
Abbot Mordalfus was about to yell retreat, but as soon as he opened his mouth, it was filled to the brim with Flicheye arrows.

Yes, I realize they're all the gruesome parts, but they're hilarious!  ;D

So, I think you're all wrong.

This is what happened, gather 'round the fire young ones, whilst I tell my tale of epic proportions...

It was a sunny day, and Cornflower was picking flowers, when suddenly, a horde of vermin comes into sight. Throwing caution and fate to the winds, she snatched up Martin's sword and slew the lot. THEN
She died of old age, because she was 80 seasons when she slew them, and her old bones couldn't support her sword arm much longer...

Nah, a sneaky weasel came in the abbey one night, and creeped through the window, drew his dagger and.......
Was confronted with the abbey warrior, Matthias, who proceeded to beat his brains out with the flat of his sword, with each blow, shouting another word. "DON'T! YOU! HURT! MY! CORNFLOWER! OR! ANY! OF! US! EVER!" By the time Matthias had spoken the word "Cornflower" the weasel was already dead.

Ah object!

Still, it's a possibility. Perhaps not the best for mentioning, but a possibility nonetheless.

Mod: I'm a little disturbed that you would post something like this. When she's recovered and is online again, that's one thing, and I'm sure everyone would get a chuckle out of it then, but it's inappropriate to make light of this situation right now. Use common sense, people -- if you wouldn't joke about something like that in "real life", then don't post it here either. Consider this an official warning.

I think that the Ungatt style FICTIONAL Cornflower death story could be like this:

When Matthias leads an attack on a vermin camp just inside the tree line, Basil accidentally leads them into a trap, (an expert vermin tracker made false tracks). Once they reached the vermin camp they find it deserted except for a ferret, dressed in strange robes with black and red paint all over his face he is sitting at the entrance to a large tent obviously the quarters of the leader of the vermin, with strange smoke floating out of the entrance in great wafts. "What the dickens went on here?!" asked Basil, after seeing rat, stoat, fox and weasel bones strewn all about the campsite, there were mainly weasel bones lying about all over the campsite and hanging outside of tent entrances, strung onto jewelry and also formed the staff of the strange ferret. "I am the great sorcerer Nagthu." said He, "I am sorry that we did not get to know each other more, but I have business to attend to." With that he spoke words from some unknown language and the bones came together to form new, immortal vermin. The Redwallers stood there ground for a while, until Constance was brought down with at least seven stab wounds to her chest, and then they began to give ground but fighting for it as hard as possible. Until at last Matthias was shot in the shoulder, then they were routed, Basil carried Matthias as fast as he could but he was gravely wounded and died once he reached the abbey. Cornflower rushed to the gate and saw the Redwallers being hotly pursued by some devilry, the otters shut the gate as quickly as possible, and locked it. But it was too late for Matthias, he fell into Cornflowers arms, with her weeping vehemently and said: "Now, now, this won't do! I'll be all soggy for my funeral!" said Matthias trying to cheer her up. But this just made her cry all the more. He breathed his last just as the undead broke into his beloved abbey. The otters made a last valiant stand in the orchard, but to no avail. They were quickly defeated and the Redwallers ran for their lives out of the deathtrap that used to be their stronghold. Cornflower died shortly after Matthias, no one knows for sure how she died but most say that it was grief that killed her in the end.

And to the REAL Cornflower, I'm glad you're feeling better!

I keep seeing Guests view this topic, and for a split second I think it's about me. ::)

Anyway. Any theories on how I die?

Illness or old age. If Cornflower was murdered, it would be mentioned and probably written about in one of the books.

Most likely in Pearls of Lutra, since Martin son of Mattimeo was alive.

Or she never died and now haunts the woods as an anti-spirit.

There is no evidence to that. Sounds like a ghost story.

There's no evidence to her dying of old age or sickness, so this is where my ghost story comes into play!

You know that Occam's Razor isn't actually a real razor, right? It's a logical principle.

Hi kids, do stay on topic.

I admit to being fond of the Flitchaye arrow story, but I don't think there's any reason to suppose that anything special happened relating to Cornflower's death, or that of any character whose passing wasn't mentioned on page.

That's why she's an antispirit in Mossflower Woods.
