Title: The Wearet
Post by: Galedeep on July 09, 2011, 06:58:51 PM
In the book Mattimeo, the wearet is a vicious creature that almost kills Matthias. What is this fellow? Is he the only one of his kind? So many questions, I felt he deserved his own thread.

Weasel+ferret.
There's also a wearet in Loamhedge (altho I don't see how he could have "blood of the wearets" since hybrids are usually incapable of reproduction)

Razzid Wearat was the villain is Rogue Crew. His name (wearat) is spelled differently then wearet. But I'm guessing he is the same. Just a guess.

Kharanjul from Loamhedge was a wearet.
As for Razzid, I haven't read the Rogue Crew but I'm assuming he's a hybrid between a rat and a weasel.

Yes he is, now that I think about it.

Nobody really knows for sure what a wearat is. That's what makes them so mysterious. I think Mr. Jacques never told us on purpose so it'd keep the subject more interesting.

All of the above! I find it especially interesting that wearet and wearat seem to be two different subsets of the same monster. And always, always, weasels are involved. They must make the best villains. ;)

Anyway Wearet/Wearats are really some of the ultimate big villains.  Even though we don't know what they are, its always good to see heroes such as Matthias and Bragoon and Sarabando triumph over them.

Wearet=creepy. I am not sure how a weasel+ferret hybrid could occur, but it is still interesting.
Sure, I don't know how Kharanjul or whatever could have 'blood of the wearets'. It might be that he was just another one.

So what IS the difference between a wearet and a wearat???  ???
Title: Re: The Wearet
Post by: Osu on July 19, 2011, 08:31:33 PM
I think what we've decided is that one was thought to be a cross between a weasel and a rat, and the other was thought to be a cross between a weasel and a ferret.

Okay, I was randomly thinking about Shadow (from Redwall). If I remember right, the book said something like this about Shadow: "No one knew if he was a rat, a weasel, or both."
In the TV series they make him look like a rat. But if he were really both rat and weasel, Shadow would be a wearat. Just thought that was interesting.

EDIT: Yep, Redwall Wiki agrees with me, Shadow's Wiki page. (http://redwall.wikia.com/wiki/Shadow) Look at his species.

It was said later in the book by Matthias that Shadow was a rat.Not sure if he is though.

I just assume Shadow's a rat. Maybe my opinion's a little biased, because I saw the show before I read the book, but that's how I see him. :-\

Interspecies marriage does not necessarily mean interspecies reproduction.  Needless to say if what we're saying is true (wearet = weasel + ferret & wearat = weasel + rat) I don't really want to image how the latter two got it on to have a kid.  :o

But maybe its more common than we suspect:

Good point, Musician! I never thought of that. But then, I haven't read Redwall in a long time. ;)

I kinda half read it a while ago. I remember that part was interesting at the time. Then I forgot it completely. It wasn't until I started doodling pictures of Tiria, Gurven and Shadow, did I remember it. My mind is random.

The Wearet was very...odd. I could never quite picture him clearly when I read the book. How could he have virtually no neck or ears? Very odd indeed.

As a side note, it is possible for a female ferret to successfully produce offspring with a male stoat, but I'm not sure about a weasel and a ferret. Of course, weasels are very closely related to stoats, so it might have worked.

This is off-topic, but as for Razzid Wearat...I really don't see how he came to be. Weasels and rats aren't even in the same family (Mustelid + Rodent makes absolutely no sense).

The reason it worked is because Jacques wanted it. ;)
