Option 1: Woodland orphans that the Abbey took in
votes: 11
Option 2: Their parents went looking for adventure
votes: 3
Option 3: Many young ones don't survive the winters.
votes: 0
Option 4: I don't have any idea!
votes: 4
Option 5: The parents just aren't mentioned.

Have you noticed that there seems to be a lot more dibbuns in the abbey than olderbeasts? Where did they all come from?
The better question may be where are the younger animals that are breeding them? We always seem to hear of the older, elder animals in the abbey, but are these the parents? They sure don't speak as if they are the parents of the dibbuns.

I've always thought a lot of them were woodland orphans that the Abbey took in.
I thought so too!

They are, I think it was in Redwall that he said that.
This is a darker way of thinking it, but usually there's several of these creatures born, but usually very few survive or there's some runts. Do you think that's why there's so many dibbuns and so few old?
Maybe.
There are some things that creatures in real life do that Redwall animals don't. I don't think that that would happen to Redwall animals. That's just me, though.
Maybe they move away.
Not tryin' to be rude, but who would move away from Redwall?

Young ones looking for adventure out side the abbey walls, Then when they are old they come back to redwall to spend there last seasons.
maybe sounds correct
I'm going to make a poll using all of the ideas you have.
Parents gone for adventures is very improbable.
How come?
Because, when there was one, he talked about it.
Okay, just gathering info so I can make my decision.
I have been reading, and there are a lot of parents in the books, they are there.
Add to the poll that their parents just aren't mentioned in the books. That's what I think.
I think that they went out adventuring... if you were living in Redwall for all your life, you would get REALLY bored by the time you are older. But if you came to visit Redwall, you might want to stay there forever. That's my take on it.

There are a lot of animals that are not mentioned. SO, it may be that they have parents, but they just aren't mentioned. OR, they might be orphans. Good question, though.....
