Title: Redwall in Two-Dimensions
Post by: SoranMBane on April 03, 2015, 10:06:09 AM
So we've got those two Redwall Minecraft maps, and those are great. But there's more than one buildy-crafty-type game on the market, you know? So, uhh... Here's the thing that I did:

Yep, I built our beloved Redwall Abbey in Terraria, along with several other notable locations from the books (and one technically non-cannon but still thematically-appropriate location). All of it took approximately eleventy-billion hours to build (give or take), and aside from a Steam friend helping me wire up the teleporter from the Abbey gate to Salamandastron, everything was built by me alone (and all legitimately, too, aside from exploiting the old chest duplication glitch to get money for paints and whatnot). It's an on-going project, so I'm constantly adding new things and tweaking various details, but if you want to see some more screenshots of the work that I've done so far, you can find them in this Imgur album here (there's 45 screenshots all-told, with descriptions on each image): http://imgur.com/a/0cP2s#0 (http://imgur.com/a/0cP2s#0)

But here's a few more sneak-peaks to give you a taste:

And if anyone who owns Terraria wants a chance to explore what I've done themselves, then I suppose I wouldn't be averse to hosting a multiplayer server on occasion. Just message me so we can work out the details and exchange the necessary information. In addition, I may eventually look into ways to share the world for people to download and check out on their own time, but that seems a bit more complicated, so it'll have to wait for now.

Anyhow, I hope you guys enjoyed this. I certainly enjoyed building everything. ;D

Woah, that's a really impressive work, Soran!

I'm actually tempted to shake the dust off Terraria and give it a try :)

I don't know what Terraria is, but I agree with Sierra here. That looks great :)

Cool! I'll have to dust Terraria and get back into it someday.

Thanks for the compliments, guys! I worked pretty hard on this, so it's nice to know that other Redwall fans like what I've done.

And, yeah, now (or at least sometime in the next couple months) would be as good a time as any for someone to be getting back into Terraria. The next big update is supposed to be coming out in June, after all (ever wanted to help defend Redwall Abbey from an alien invasion?).

And, hmm... Redwall is supposed to have an attic above its dormitories, isn't it? Well, I guess I'd better go get on that.  ;)

WOW! Amazing job! I don't have terraria (I know plenty of people that do) But if I get it I'll definitely want to see it! ;D

Thanks! I would definitely be glad to show everything to you if you do ever get the game (I actually wouldn't be surprised if Terraria goes on sale around the time that the next update comes out; maybe that would be an opportune time?).

And, uhh... Oh yeah! The attic! Here it is!:

It's been years since I read Pearls of Lutra, but I followed the description from the Wiki as close as I could and I think it turned out pretty well.

In addition to building the attic, I also make a couple other tweaks, most notably to a part of the Abbey that I've been meaning to renovate for a while now; the loft (the old version was kind of boring and tiny):

[close]
Besides just making it bigger and prettier, I also made it so that getting into the loft requires either a pair of wings or a climb across the rooftops, and I added scattered piles of hay (the last remnants of the Sparra that used to live there).

And, while it's not a huge change, I moved the Abbot's quarters to a slightly larger room above the library:

But I'm still not sure what to do with all that empty space between the Abbot's quarters and the loft; maybe I'll just add some more dormitories up there.

And, of course, the map of the whole building:

The higher-resolution screenshots have been added to the Imgur album linked in my first post, if anyone wants to see them.

I did some stuff with that empty space:

Now, it's not entirely clear to me from the books whether Abbeyschool takes place in its own dedicated room or not, but I figured that it would be nice if it did in my version of Redwall, so that's what that bottom room with all the little desks is. I also put an apple on the teacher's desk for good measure (well, okay it's not actually an apple; it's just a pumpkin block painted red). Those two smaller rooms above are not really based on anything from the books, but were something I thought would be nice anyway; just a secluded space where the Redwallers can hang out, take their tea, or simply relax and look out at the countryside through those big windows.

Here's the updated map of the building:

Those with sharp eyes may also have noticed that the Abbey has a few secret chambers underground. I haven't really talked about or shown pictures of those because, well, they're supposed to be secret, right? Anyone who's read Redwall or Mattimeo may be able to guess what two of them are just from looking at them, though.

Another little update, here; this time to the Kingdom of Malkariss:

For the longest time, I had a normal reaper statue acting as a stand-in for Malkariss' statue, which was spooky-looking and all, but just didn't quite cut it. But now I've finally gotten around to building a proper one, similar to how I built the Doomwyte idol. It's been quite a long time since I've read Mattimeo myself, but I did what I could following the Redwall Wiki.

Here's the updated map of the whole place:

Another update on my Kingdom of Malkariss; it's gone through a good bit of renovating lately.

Firstly, I realized that this place was supposed to be located under a big wooded plateau, so I kind of went and built that. I don't know what's wrong with me either. Anyway, here's the new entrance:

I replaced some of the sandstone that made up most of the structure with other block types (mostly stone slabs and green dungeon brick), and painted the rest grey to make things look more depressing (it took a lot of grey paint):

Alright, Terraria update 1.3 is finally live! And, as I predicted, there is even a small sale going on (the game currently has a -25% discount on both Steam and Good Old Games). (EDIT: The sales are over, it's back to full price at the moment)

So, in light of this long-awaited batch of new content finally being released, I wanted to detail my immediate future plans for the Redwall world:

-Add one more landmark to the world (there's a nice little cave just east of the Abbey and I was planning to build a nice little mole village in there).

-Finish up some terraforming. It's pretty mind-numbing work without resorting to things like TEdit, so I've been neglecting this. :P

-Update the existing structures with any appropriate items added by 1.3. Chances are good that a lot of stuff is going to have to be imported in from another world.

-Once all of that is done and the world is more or less to my satisfaction, that's when I plan to make the map available for people to download.

-After that, I wanted to take a copy of the world and use third-party world editors like TEdit to turn it into an adventure map, with a little story, challenges, collectibles, and boss fights.

So, yeah, that's basically it. This update has been a long time coming, so go play and enjoy!

I have no idea, but definitely a lot. ;D

Though, to be fair, I had hundreds of hours in this game even before this project would have been possible (namely, before the paints were added), and the majority of that time was still spent just building stuff. All working on this map has done is give my building more direction.

Because that's a thing that... Happened.

Oh, and fun fact about this new update; now, whenever there's a pirate invasion, the pirates will occasionally attack in a flying ship named the Flying Dutchman. So, Redwall Abbey could get attacked by the Flying Dutchman.

Well, it's brown-furred rather than black, but it is indeed possible to get a pet puppy. Otherwise, I suppose you could just force a friend to dress in a black wolf dog costume.  ;D

Anyway, that mole village is pretty much finished now. Here it is:

I suppose I may as well just name it Moledeep, since that actually is a place from the books. The whole thing was built out of a natural cave located just east of Redwall. That purple stuff used for the doors, stairs, and some of the walls is granite, which is a new material added by 1.3.

Alright, I've got some more updates.

The first thing is related to a nifty new feature added by 1.3 called Camera Mode, which allows me to take screenshots of very large structures in their entirety, and more-or-less as they would appear in-game. So, here's Redwall Abbey and Salamandastron in their full, pixelated glory (these are very large pictures; it' highly recommended you follow the Imgur links to see the full-resolution versions):

I'll share more Camera Mode shots of the other structures once I've ironed out the details to the point that I'm satisfied.

Another feature 1.3 apparently added is the ability to dye pets whatever colour you want, so, uhh... Here ya go:

Yeeaaahh... I kinda hung those up in the Party Girl's room as a dumb little joke. ;D It's definitely not as bad as when I had a bunch of paintings entitled "Living Gore" hanging in the infirmary. Also those lanterns in the dibbun's room are literally from the Underworld (because children).

... Look, it may be Redwall, but this is also me that's building it; I can't function without throwing a few morbid jokes into the mix.

But, yeah, I probably will take those pelts down. Eventually. In the future. Plus pixels are totally vegetarian anyway.

Erm.. Uh.. Erm...

*Coughs awkwardly*

Actually, The reason the server has not been up is because of the server host.. And the news isn't to good...

The most recent payment did not go through... Even though I paid for it.. It somehow didn't go through. Long story short... the server has been deleted by the are host...  :-\. That means everything is gone.. Well, not exactly everything. Just everything that has happened since we made the new server.. Were not exactly back at ground 0, More like ground 40? At least we have the original map of redwall.. But everything else.. Is erm.. gone...

Gonff and I are still committed to getting the server backup, Helping everyone out with the stuff they lost.. And adding lots of really cool new features and ways to keep the server popularity going. With special events, Castle sieges, fun minigames, and some really cool other stuff! We will also implement new ideas to keep the server always new and exciting. We will also have set "Roleplay times" for minecraft Redwall roleplaying. At the moment Gonff and I are both starting up school again so it will probably be 2-3 weeks before we can start working on the Redwall Minecraft Server 3.0? I know many of you are probably upset... And we understand this. But we promise we will try to make the new server better then the first. (Now I'm gonna go copy and paste this into the NEW redwall minecraft server thread.. Because I'm too lazy to type a specific one)

Now, for what this topic is about:

This is turning out really great Soran! I love how you made Ben and Ned! I'm considering getting Terraria on either the xBox One or PC what did you make this on? Also, Is there a price difference?

This is on PC (and on Steam specifically). Terraria costs $9.99 on both Steam and Good Old Games (and potentially a good bit less than that if you can catch it on sale), while on XBox One it appears to cost, uhm... *Googles* Somewhere between $14.99 and $19.99. So, yes, there's a bit of a price difference.

@Rocktree: In future, it's definitely a good idea to save backups to your computer regularly.

Also, as for your PC/XBox question- Pc is pretty much just better than Xbox. Not only is the platform superior, the Pc version and the console version of Terraria are NOT identical, and the Pc version has more content. It isn't a graphically demanding game, if you run Minecraft alright then you should run Terraria just fine. Join the Glorious PcMasterRace! Glory to the 60FPS Revolution! *salutes*
