Title: The Walking Dead
Post by: Ungatt Trunn on February 11, 2017, 06:09:22 AM
I know as this is a more "family oriented" forum on account of it being dedicated to a more younger-audience series like Redwall that maybe not too many people that are into this, but I want to know if anyone else is into or at least watches/watched The Walking Dead? If so, thoughts/discussions?

Right now I'm on episode 8 of Season 4 (I know I'm a bit behind, but I'm working on it  ;D ). I know this may sound strange as my profile pic is Negan, who doesn't appear until like Season 6... but hey, (POTENTIAL SPOILER INBOUND) everyone knows by now that Glenn is dead, and or course everyone also knows who finished him off... and I'm liking the sound of Negan, so why not use him as my profile pic?

Anyways, any fellow Walking Dead watchers out there?

and now your personal text just made sense to me...

I'll discuss when it comes back on in February.

I have been reading the comic on-and-off since issue 1 and I found it very enjoyable (especially around the Prison, which has since become my favorite part of the story).

I can't say the same for the TV show, though. I watched the double-feature showcasing Episodes 1 and 2 (and I remember them being quite good, actually) but then I got immediately thrown off by the delay between each new air date of following episodes and never watched the series consistently again.

Netflix keeps recommending me the series and I have since watched some episodes on Fox... maybe it is time for me to pick it up again.

Lol I should probably change my personal text - could be taken in the wrong way by someone who doesn't understand the context :P

Wait, waddya mean "come back on in February"? It's February 10 where I am, and isn't it every Sunday?

I've never actually read the comics... I just started watching The Walking Dead on a whim and discovered I really liked it lol

So how far have you actually gotten? I can say that they shouldn't disappoint ;D

On the comics? I read up to Issue #117, I believe. I have since lost track of it, though. Those are definitely great and well-worth your time, specially early on with their rough-draft drawing style and colorful yet dark covers.

I might check into them - I've watched interviews from the makers of the show, and it seems like the show is pretty different from the series, so I could probably get a lot out of reading the original story

I'd totally recommend you to do it. I believe that several key characters from the comic never made it into the show (and vice versa). Plus, there's something utterly rewarding at reading the story unfold at its own pace.

Yeah, though the TV show's story unfolds in a darn nice way itself... but yeah, I'll definitely give the comics a shot sometime.

Yeah, but she wasn't a nurse and she didn't necessarily betray the Governor.

She betrayed Rick and the group and didn't really play a huge role.

I'm not entirely surprised, considering how Alice's contribution was rather small and that she was forgotten about very soon.

Still, it would have been nice to see her around during that part.

Really now? I find that hard to comprehend... I mean, when you say "more horrible", was it in the sense that he showed less humanity? Because that's the one thing I love about the Governor in the TV show: he does (or at least tries to do) all these terrible things - but underneath it all he still has positive human emotions. Like his bizarre attachment to his zombified daughter (Penny), which made him a possibly psychotic shade, but at the same time it made you sympathies with him because it was a basic but powerful affection (similar to how Hershel viewed the walkers as "sick people" rather than mindless animals). And even though I haven't gotten too far into his story in Season 4, he does some pretty terrible things (murder  :P ), but he didn't do it for his personal gain: he ultimately did it to protect that family he had "taken under his wing".

All of these contrasts of humanity, insensitivity and even sadism, I think, have crafted him into a very deep, complex and, best of all, understandable character in the TV show. He isn't just a "bad guy" - he's a human, like the rest of the survivors are. He just sadly leaned the wrong way in the end...
Title: Re: The Walking Dead

No, I don't mean he's a better villain in the comics, I mean he does worse things. :P
Now, I've not actually gotten into the comics, but I have heard what he does. Which is pretty horrible.

But the real question is... should I stay up until 1 in the morning to see the new episode, or do I wait until tomorrow night to see if I'll have the time to watch it?.... hmmm.... ;D
Title: Re: The Walking Dead
Post by: Luftwaffles on February 13, 2017, 05:31:49 AM
He does have some -barely noticeable- traces of humanity on the comics... but is an all-around horrible person, just as Eul said.

In all honesty, he's written in such a way that you kind of end up rooting for him after a while. The man is crazy, but he's not necessarily a psycho (well, except for him sitting on a room which has a fish tank full of severed zombie heads in it... that's kind of messed up) and all his crazy planning and willingness to spare no lives to accomplish his selfish goals -one of them turned into a wholesale on-slaughter of his own people due to a grudge with Rick's group- makes him a super engaging villain.

When the daughter was brought up for the first time, it looked like a possible redeeming factor for him, but nah... of course not. It's been a while since I read that part, but I believe that the very next thing he did after feeding his daughter was to head out to torture some more people who have fallen into his city.

I'm also in love with the fact that he wears full anti-riot gear while on the front line... even though he had a tank to begin with ;D

True, though they still had Hershel loose the lower part of his leg (though starting in season 4 he wore like a fake foot so...)
Title: Re: The Walking Dead
Post by: Andy on February 14, 2017, 04:36:33 AM
Possible spoiler to anyone intending to read the comics; Hershel didn't lose his leg in the comics, though. :P

I've read most of the comics (up to the start of the Whisperer War, which has recently been concluded, I believe?) and am just waiting for a chance to buy the newest volume whenever it's out.  I don't bother buying individual issues.  I don't own all of the comics, despite having read them up to this point, though.  I'm slowly working on expanding my collection.

I've seen every episode of the TV series, though, and own all of the seasons except for 2 and 5 on either bluray or DVD.  I've also watched the two currently released seasons of the spin-off, Fear the Walking Dead, and have read two of the novels that tie in with the comics (I got sidetracked after starting on the third).

Since we were discussing The Governor, I want to say that I think he was a better villain on the show because of the fact that he wasn't obviously evil all of the time.  In the comics he just straight-up announces it, and despite the novels giving him more character depth, he was more difficult to like as a villain in the comics for me.  I don't think his TV incarnation would have worked in the comics, however.  He was more suited for the actor they cast and specifically, for being on a screen.  The comic version was much better suited for the comics.  The different tones of the two and stories not being exactly the same makes it more logical that the villains aren't quite the same, too.

On that note, I'm going to say this (comic and TV spoilers ahead):
Spoiler
I do like the TV series' way of handling Negan better than the comics so far.  TV Rick is much more awesome and likable than comic Rick, and having kept Morgan alive to push for the sparing of Negan rather than having Rick come to that conclusion somewhat randomly is something I'm really grateful for and excited about.

Netflix is pretty good, as long as no one else is like uploading a 10-hour video to YouTube. I don't watch TWD on it (the rest of my family doesn't care for or really like that stuff), but we've watched other long TV shows and stuff on it with little to no problem.

I watched the series on Netflix until I was caught up and since then have been watching all the new episodes as they air on AMC. Watching Talking Dead after is a lot of fun, too. I also buy the seasons on bluray or DVD later, as there are often extended episodes, deleted scenes, and interesting commentary from the cast and crew (I've always wanted to be in entertainment, so this stuff REALLY appeals to me).

I have to say, season 4 was unquestionably my favorite. I'm really liking some of what they're doing now, too, though some of it is kind of weird (maybe I just feel that way because I've read the comics at this point). Either way I'm eager for tonight's episode. :)

So far I consider Season 4 to be my favorite as well - it's the most intricate and attention-grabbing of all of them so far, and despite having the same length as most of the other seasons, it feels a lot longer (which is a good thing!), probably because of just how much big and crazy stuff happens in it.

I'm glad they had Morgan kill again, especially the character he ended up killing, but I wonder how this is going to affect him as he moves on in his character arc.  How awesome is it that him and Carol and Ezekiel are ready to fight now? I mean I knew they'd be ready eventually because obviously having read the comics I know that Negan's going to be fought, but anyway, this episode was a really good one.  It really made up for some of the slower ones earlier in the season, that's for sure.

Anyone been reading the comics? I read the latest issue a few days ago and something pretty big happened. Everyone was real upset on social media. Something of this sort was due, though. Anyone else read it?

Haven't read it since number... 120? But please PM me those details (or post about them in a spoiler) because I would like to know what upset those people.

I'll post it here in case anyone else wants to know or has read them and wants to discuss it. For anyone avoiding spoilers regarding The Whisperer War and its immediate follow-up, steer clear!

Spoiler
The Whisperers have steered a massive horde of roamers towards Alexandria.  Some of the people who live there are leading them away on horseback, trying to divert the horde into the sea and save the settlement. They encounter some difficulty in doing this, and Eugene stays back a ways with a horn to draw their attention to help the others escape. He's not slept in at least an entire day at this point, and ends up losing his horse to the roamers. Andrea goes back for him, and manages to fight off the attackers and get him onto her horse, but she is bitten on the neck.  The wound is minor enough that she gets Eugene out of there and they return to Alexandria, the imminent danger of the horde past, where Rick and the others learn the news. In the years it has been since All Out War, she had become even more important to the group than she was before and many people say their tearful goodbyes as she lies dying in bed. Rick nearly gives up, but she gives him a final pep talk about all the good he's done and reminds him that he's needed. She eventually turns and he has to put her down, he and Carl having now lost a second wife/mother to this world, and Alexandria having lost one of its best citizens. It was very emotional, and it looks like trouble is not done brewing just yet either.

I was honestly expecting way more.

It seems that TWD's glory days are long gone now.

I had a similar reaction once I'd read it myself. People online were very upset, so, I caught up on reading it to see what was what.  Definitely expected more than what I found, though I did understand why people were emotional.  I obviously left out many less relevant things (to the current upheaval, at any rate),  but the story as a whole isn't the same quality it used to be. I still enjoy it, but something is... lacking. There were definitely other things even in this arc that had a bigger affect from my point of view, but oh well.

I honestly haven't been able to get some genuine investment nor reactions since The Prison arc. Everything that followed that seemed so bland, so uninspired in comparison. I enjoyed a bunch of the side-stories since, but never the arcs as a whole past that point.

But I guess that, if anything's gonna get you emotional after all this time, that's probably the thing that's gonna do it.
