Title: What do you think about zoos?
Post by: Izeroth on December 24, 2014, 01:49:07 AM
What do you think about zoos? Are they good? Are they bad? Are they both good and bad?

Supporters of zoos would say that they save species from extinction and help fund money for conservation, but those opposed to zoos would say that they're cruel to animals.

There okay I guess. But it really depends. In developing countries they can be terrible concrete things but some are actually luxurious enclosures. So it's good and bad I suppose

I think they can be good and bad as well. They can be really bad, with awful sanitation and lack of space for the creatures... But at the same time they can be really good. Most of the zoos in the United States are pretty good, I think (though there are a few bad ones). If done right, zoos can be very important (as in the case of the zoo near where I live, which houses multiple critically endangered species). If it weren't for zoos, many species of birds and mammals would likely have gone extinct by now.

They can actually be dangerous :o This guy got eaten and mauled by a white tiger in an Indian zoo a little while back. But it was his own fault, we ignored the signs and jumped all the barriers.

I think wether or not a zoo is good depends on the zoo and culture. I think most Western cultured zoos take pretty good care of animals. However, in countries like India and if they exist there, the Middle East probably don't have good treatment of animals.

Ok...I typed Danflor then changed it to the Mask. :P
Anyway, back on topic:
The zoo we have here is nice. They had these two little leopards that they nursed to health. They do a lot, mostly for the clouded leopards.  Now, I recently saw a documentary called Blackfish. It's about the Orca whales that are in captivity in like SeaWorld and stuff. It's deep, moving and intense. If zoo animals are treated like that, then zoos should be investigated and punished.

That Blackfish thing was mere propaganda. It wasn't even that bad! (As I remember it.)

India's zoos in general are pretty terrible. When I mentioned concrete things, I had an Indian zoo in mind. But I've also been to a really cool zoo in China. It was like three kilometers squared and all the enclosures were great.

I believe some people got killed by a tiger at the San Diego zoo, but if I remember correctly, they had been taunting the tiger and throwing stuff at it.

Did the zoo you went to resemble the one in the movie Life of Pi?

As long as the cages are a good size, the animals are treated well and there's the conservation (and education) behind it, zoos can be a positive thing. Still, some places I've seen animals in I have felt very sorry for them. One place had a, not huge, glass cage for a snow leopard and everyone was snapping away with their cameras with the flash on and it really didn't feel comfortable. I guess safari parks are better in some ways for more roam land. Zoos must just ensure the animals get the very best for their needs, and if they're not, then they should be moved to somewhere they will feel better.

I have been to the Singapore Zoo, Night Safari and River Safari. The animals live in enclosures and there are relatively few bars. But one of the white tigers died recently. *sob*. My mum recalls from her childhood that there was a zoo in India and all the animals were starving and malnourished and the cages were made of only iron and in the hot indian summer, ouch.

Wow, cool.
I've been to a bunch of zoos, but only one has ever had a cheetah. Fort Worth Texas zoo.

I was just at Toledo Zoo, some stupid rabbit got stuck between the human fence and the tiger fence.

:D

Revive! Wow, rabbits, hmm.

There used to be an albino peacock at my local zoo. It ended up wandering into the tiger exhibit.

Fun for the tiger, not the people watching.

Yikes. I thought zoo exhibits were supposed to be fairly secure. If a random peacock can accidentally wander in, what's the chances that a tiger could accidentally wander out?

A couple of lions wandered out of one over here recently :o  :o it was one of those open range type zoos. Thankfully no person or animal was harmed...unless you count someone likely getting fired º-)
On peacoks, I'm assuming it's common for zoos to allow them to wander around amongst people? I followed around one at the Melbourne zoo once, I'm guessing they're pretty chill around peeps?

My local zoo has an open-range greenhouse sort of thing where humans and peacocks can walk. They're fairly passive, plenty of wild ones around where I live. There's a flock that hangs out by where I get off my transit

Yup. The zoo I go to (CMZ) has a bunch of animals that just walk around, including peacocks, Wallabies, and penguins. The tiger enclosure is the sort of thing that's easy to get into, but difficult to get out of, and I can kinda figure out what happened there.
