Why? That sentence wouldn't make sense given the context. He is not a professor, he's a detective

  Makes me think of a Shel Silverstein poem about a boy who wore headphones all the time and he'd hear trumpets instead of ducks, flutes instead of the wind, and while he's walking along the train tracks, he hears the rumbling of the timpani instead of the train.
