Title: The Quest for Romance: Land
Post by: Rainshadow on October 27, 2012, 05:27:05 AM
Tempest was sitting in her room, nearly asleep as she relaxed in her chair.  It was mid-afternoon at Redwall Abbey, and it couldn't have been a better day.  It was nice and warm, and the Redwallers wandered around peacefully, enjoying the beauty of the day.
Tempest decided to go outside.  She wandered up to the battlements, looking out into the woods.  She saw a rather grey-ish white otter staring at her in the distance.  "Hello!"  She waved to the otter.

Avalanche was walking up to Redwall, hoping he would make it in time for supper.  He stepped out of the forest and looked up at something moving in the battlements.  He saw the most beautiful sea otter standing up there.  He froze.
"Hello!"  The otter was waving at him!
Avalanche slowly recovered from his shock and waved at her.  "H-hello!  May I come in?"
The ottermaid disappeared beneath the walls, only to reappear in the doorway.  She held the door open for Avalanche as he walked in.  He smiled at her, and she smiled slightly.

Featherwood was fishing on the side of the river Moss, taking in the worm sun that was poring in on him threw the tree tops.

Terra was enjoying the day too. Decding to take a walk in the afternoon sun she smiled. Everything was peaceful as usual. The Dibbuns were frolicking in the pond laughing, Elders relaxing in the shade, and other Redwallers talking and genrally having a good time. The Abbey's goings were very predictable. It was a good thing for beasts who needed routine in their life but Terra was one for more adventure.
Her walk was taking her to the battlements as she looked over the battlements to the outside world. She sometimes longed to be out there; seeing new beasts, exploring new places, finding unknown valleys and streams. Sighing she looked back out at the Abbey. Peace and safety were in abundance, and order reigned.

After pulling in his 4th fish he started back to his little den near the river, as he was walking across the path he stopped. Which he normaly didn't do even though he has walked across it many a time because their was more fish up stream. He stood there for some time thinking to him-self what was down that road of dust, he had his lunch and water why not take a picnic down there. So Featherwood went down the path, it was very peaceful the only sound was a bird singing in a tree.
As the sun was high in the sky he saw a tower than a wall.
"So this is whats down the path." he said.

Avalanche looked at the otter who had let him in.  Her dark grey fur was beautiful, and she had sparkling blue eyes.  Avalanche guessed that she didn't even try to make herself beautiful, she already was.
"Uh, hi," he said.  "Thanks for lettin' me in.  Th'name's Avalanche."  He smiled a little.
The pretty female smiled at him as well.  "Hello, I'm Tempest.  Welcome to Redwall, Avalanche."

Rikkendo strode out from the abbey's great hall. He had been spending his morning gazing at the tapestry of Martin. It always made him feel good to look at what he hoped he would be like some day. Martin was so strong and courageous. The young mouse patted the long knife at his side. If need arose perhaps someday the abbot would ask him to wield the sword of martin.

The mouse strode out onto the lawn and glanced around. Perhaps he could find Tia. He had always enjoyed the mousemaid's company. Maybe they could go pick some fruit in the orchard.

Acorn was sitting in a tree above Featherwood. She dropped down closer and smiled.

"Lo there! Nice day for a picnic lunch eh?"

(OOC: @Brookskimmer, do you mind if I make it out as if Milo and Acorn have already met?)

BIC: A red furred shape raced across the abbey-battlements, bounding from parapet to parapet. The squirrel thought to himself, 'I'm sure to win the walltop race this year. That friar's trifle is as good as mine!', he jumped up to where Terra was standing.
"Good afternoon Terra! Lovely day isn't it?" He took a candied chestnut from his pocket and chewed, he offered one to Terra, "Want one?"

"Sure!" said Terra energetically. Milor had always been a good friend of hers and she took the nut happily.
"It is a lovely day isn't it?" she looked in to the Abbey grounds, "I see you're trying hard for that race aren't you?"

Avalanche looked around, seeing many creatures going about, enjoying their day.  He had been to Redwall once before, and that time he had been naught but a young Dibbun.  Now, being a full grown sea otter, it felt much different being here.
He turned back to Tempest.  "It's a beautiful day, ain't it, Ma'am?"
Tempest nodded.  "Yes, it sure is.  Would ye like somethin' to eat?"
  Avalanche's eyes widened.  "Would I?"
Tempest took this as a yes.  Without saying a word, she led the way to the kitchens.  Avalanche followed her.

Elay tore across the ground, feet whacking the earth, always with the same intervals between the thumps, like clockwork. Elay was a learned rabbit, but that made her all the more cautious. She traveled all over, this time it was out to the sea. Her right paw suddenly shot down a hidden hole in the ground, sending her head over heels, "Embleer hraka!" She cursed. Elay spoke the language of those of the far northern rabbits, for every northern species had a language, but she could barely manage the universal language of the creatures from the south as well. Well, at least the sea wasn't far, she picked herself up and started towards the tree line.

As she burst from the trees, she stopped dead, "O, voith los!"(Oh, most water!) The sea stretched in front of her as far as she could see. The sea always took your breath away, no matter how many times you saw it. She had seen it once before, when she was little more than a dibbun.

Tia and Leisa were walking on the walltops. Tia looked up at the sky and took a deep breath. 'It's's a nice day, isn't it? I feel like lying down on the grass and going to sleep.'
Leisa giggled. 'Somebeast might tread on you. Anyway, why would you want to sleep on a day like this? It's too beautiful to laze around.'
Tia shrugged. 'I'm going to do it anyway.' She bounced down the stairs, taking them two at a time, and landed on the lawn in an undignified heap.

OOC: @Wonwill: Do you think you could move posts about Elay to the sea thread starting with your next post? I'm going to have Raven ask Birata to send out a small party to gather some slaves. This would be a good way for Elay to end up aboard the Lashkeel. What do you think?

BIC:

Yes very nice, do you live in that big place?

Acorn shook her head lightly.

"No, but I like to visit there. Would you like to visit too? Or do you live there?"

After speaking she bounded up further into the tree, keeping an ear open for Featherwood's response. When she was high enough she could see over the battlements. Suddenly her heart jumped. It was Milo! Truth be told she visited Redwall for all the kind beasts and food, but mostly for Milo. He was a good squirrel and she very much enjoyed his company. She watched him leaping about the parapets and smiled. Then she called out.

"Lo Milo! Lovely weather for leaping battlements eh?"

She called down to Featherwood.

"So, would you like to pay Redwall a visit?"
_____

Rikkendo was startled as two creatures came tumbling out of the stairwell and onto the lawn. It was Leisa and Tia! How fortunate, just who he was looking for.

"Are you two alright?" He asked and then chuckled. "That's some fancy tumbling skills you have there."

"Yep!" that race is in the Haversack for me!" he puffed out his chest proudly. "I'm bound to win it this season!" he raced up and down the nearby parapets, just to show off a bit. Then when he had reached the corner he stopped, and nearly fell off! It was Acorn!
He stumbled then regained his balance, "Hi Acorn! I'm practising for the walltop race! I'm sure to win it, unless you take part, I've never seen anybeast as swift as you at tree hopping!" he flattered, as he threw her a wink. "I'm just off to ring the bells for supper, care to join me? It can be so strenuous doing it by myself!" he put on a look of mock pity, hoping the pretty squirrelmaid would accompany him.

Avalanche was standing in the kitchens, feasting on some scones.  "Mmf," he said to Tempest.  "These scones are delicious!"
Tempest nodded her head in agreement.  "Yes, I'd 'ave to agree."  Tempest had to get out of there.  She felt strangely awkward around this otter.
"Well," she began.  "I'd better get back to me... um... Abbey duties."  With that, she walked off.

I'm just off to ring the bells for supper, care to join me? It can be so strenuous doing it by myself!

Acorn watched Milo preform his wall top jumping skills and smiled. She thought possibly he was doing it to impress her. She was impressed. For an Abbey beast he was quite talented. Only those who grew up in the woodlands like herself might possess more prowess. Even if she did, she wouldn't flaunt it in front of the male squirrel. She batted her eye lashes at him as he winked at her. How nice of him to ask her to join in bell ringing. She was impressed that Redwall had chosen him to be the bell ringer. It was an important job!

"Strenuous eh? I should think a champion wall jumper like you should  be able to manage by yourself." She smiled again, toying with him. "However, if you think you need help,' She leaned back and then launched herself forward. The athletic squirrel flew through the air and landed, gripping onto the outside of the battlements. She quickly scurried over and stood in form of Milo, dusting off her paws. "I'd love to join you!"

'We're fine. At least, I am. I think Tia's sort of lost her tongue.

'Well the, we best look for it." Rikkendo pressed on the long knife at his side so the handle would not hit him when he stooped down to check the lawn. "No tongue here... or here..." He stood up and nodded towards the orchard. "Do you think perhaps it may have fallen off in the orchard? Maybe we should go look?" He offered his arms to escort the pretty females to the orchard and winked at Tia. "Don't worry fair maiden, we shall find your lost item post haste!"

Tia laughed and took Rikkendo's arm. 'You should ask Leisa about that. I think she was the one who said I lost my tongue!'
'I know her pretty well,' said Leisa. 'It's pretty obvious to me when she's too shy to talk...which is most of the time.'

After he had finished eating, Avalanche walked back outside.  He saw several creatures standing, talking, running, doing many different things.  Then he saw the pool.  He ran up to it and dove in.  "Woohoo!"

Tempest was hiding in her room, trying not to be seen by the sea otter, Avalanche.  She didn't know why, but she just felt rather awkward around him.
"Wot's wrong wi' me?" she asked herself.

Silverstorm the badger was a solitary creature. Ever since she had discovered and moved into the abbey half a season ago she had eaten most of her meals in a quiet place by herself. Today was no exception. She was presently eating her huge supper on the ramparts, her sharp eyes overlooking the woodlands. A bowl of hotroot and watershrimp soup, two sandwiches stuffed with cheese and mushrooms, a flagon of cider, and a slice of plum cake disappeared into Silverstorm’s mouth.

Lusiphi was wandering..... like always, but this time, unlike others, he had a destination. He had spent the night at the drey of a kindly old squirrel family, and they had directed him to Redwall Abbey just up the path aways. The beasts in these parts seemed to be a whole lot nicer than any others he had met. What was it they had called this place? Mossflower woods right? Oh well, he would find out soon enough... When he made it to this Abbey built of Red Sandstone.

OOC: I'm in! Hooray!

Rikkendo laughed lightly and reached up for an apple as they entered the orchard. It was a fine day, the air smelling sweet of ripened fruit.

"Well, perhaps an apple for your thoughts then Tia?"

Just then a robin flew into view. It was a beast they had seen around the Abbey before. A red breasted fellow named Charrup. Usually the robin would sell them information with food. He only came by when something of interest was going on.

"Well, maybe an apple for Charrup's thoughts as well. Let's go see what he's doing here!"

Avalanche heard a bit a chirp coming from the orchard.  Seeing a robin talking to some other beasts he turned to the badger, saying, "Well, g'day, marm, I'm gonna go see wot that's about."
He ran over to the orchard, leaping over anything that was in his way.  This included rocks, bushes, and even small Dibbuns.  Coming into the orchard, Avalanche bowed slightly to the robin.
"G'day, 'ow are ye farin', friend?"

He passed all the abbey-beasts, the mice and otters and the badger, but really his thoughts were only on one creature. Acorn. For some reason unknown to him, he couldn't get her out of his mind. How graceful she was, how kind and funny she was, he had reached the bell tower before he knew it, naturally he knew the way better than his squirrel friend, but he still handed a chestnut to Acorn anyway.
"Now Acorn, the supper toll go's like this; One, two, three, One, two three. You only ring one the one, on the two and three it's silent." Milo knew everything about the bells. "Repeat that for seven or so times, that will give everybeast plenty of time, ready?"

I'll race you to the bell tower! First one there gets a candied chestnut!

Acorn smiled and shook her head as Milo took off running. He was such a nice squirrel and she felt good when she was around him. After a moment the female took off in pursuit. She made it to the bell tower just after Milo. Taking the offered candied nut she neatly bit it in half and offered the remaining piece to Milo. She chewed quickly, her whiskers moving in time with the happy munching.

She listened, fascinated, as Milo explained how the bells worked. He did know a lot about the movements of the bells. Acorn loved the sound they made. Deep and brazen, they rang out through the abbey.

As he finished explaining she took the rope right below where he held onto it. "Yes, I'm ready!"

Churrup had landed on the grassy sward by the pond. The Redwallers with whom he did business usually met him there with a good supply of seed cake. This was his favorite food and well worth bits of information.

Rikkendo and two abbey mousemaids showed up first followed by an otter. The latter spoke to him.

"G'day, 'ow are ye farin', friend?"

Churrup puffed up his chest and bobbed his head to the side.

"Fit and fare enough water dog!" He eyed the abbeybeasts, looking for food. "Before we get to business... there's ummmm, some business to attend to if I'm not mistaken?" He waited. "Perhaps in the order of seedcake eh?"

There ye go, Churrup.

The greedy robin could hardly keep his beak from the seedcakes. They looked delicious indeed. He looked about at the gathered Redwall beasts and spoke before taking a quick beakful of the nearest seedcake.

"There's been some activity down at the coastlines I feel you would want to know about. The Lashkeel has come to port again. As you know, the crew of this ship has never been friendly and always has evil intentions. Especially their captain. Well, a couple woodlanders may have found themselves in trouble. I left them as they were moving towards the coast. I think you should send some beasts to investigate before they leave for sea. The Lashkeel is notorious for taking slaves aboard at port calls."

He rushed through the words and then pounced on a seedcake, stuffing his beak.

O'd do such a thing like take pore beasts as slaves?  I say we should go after 'em an' try to rescue 'em.  'O's with me?

Rikkendo puffed out his chest as Avalanche spoke. He touched the handle of his long knife as he thought of evil beasts taking slaves and prisoners. He needed to behave like a warrior, and that meant controlling himself. He nodded to the otter.

"I'll go with you. There is no place in which slavery of another creature is right." He turned to Tia, his eyes steely. "I guess we'll have to save fruit picking in the orchard for another time."

After this he turned to Churrup. "After you finish your seedcake, can you fly back to the sea and find out what's been going on. We'll need to know who has been captured and what the evil beasts are doing. A party of beasts from Redwall will leave soon. Report back to the party and then come back to the Abbey. I'm sure you will find plenty of food rewards here for your trouble."

Churrup nodded, his beak too stuffed for a reply.

"Welcome to Redwall Abbye. My name's Terra and he's Featherwood. What's yours?"

Thankee, uh, sorry, I don't think I know yer name.  My name's Avalanche.

Rikkendo nodded to the otter and offered a paw. "Oh, sorry sah. Didn't realize we hadn't been introduced. My name is Rikkendo, warrior in training. Glad to meet you Avalanche."

Churrup swallowed and took a drink from of water that some abbeymice had fetched for him. Once he had regained some composure and slaked his hunger, the robin spoke up. "Well, I did see a rabbit and a hare getting closer to the pirate ship. I would think if anybeast was to be captured by the pirates, those two would be first. Not to say, other might be taken as well." The bird flicked his head this way and that. They finally rested on Rikkendo.

"So, a group of Redwallers will head towards the coast eh? I will fly out there and pick up any new information and then report back to you and the abbey for... reward!"

Rikkendo nodded. "Aye, that's the deal robin."

With this Churrup hoped a ways away and took to flight over the battlements.

"So, when shall we leave?" He spoke to the otter, mentally calculating what supplies they might need.

 "So, when shall we leave?"

(OOC: I'm going to add a time jump in this post to keep things moving.  ;))

I say we stay 'ere till tomorrow.  We'll leave at dawn.

Rikkendo nodded seriously and turned to Tia and her friend.

"Well, if we're not leaving until morning I guess that gives us a little more time. Perhaps we should plan on having dinner together? Then it will be time to pack up the supplies!"

Well, ye can count me in on this.  I'm goin' with ye!

The would be warrior felt better to know that not only one but two stout otters would be coming along.

"Aye, sounds like we're in for adventure."
__________

The next morning dawned with a damp mist clinging to the abbey lawns and every beasts whiskers. Rikkendo exited his dormitory and hefted a simple pack onto his shoulders. It contained various supplies needed for the trip to the sea.

He came outside, looking about for the other travelers.

Tempest hadn't slept very well, but she knew she had to get up.  Like everyone else, she too had a sack that held the food they needed.  Picking it up, she swung it over her shoulder and went outside, careful not to wake anybeast up.  She met with Rikkendo and Avalanche.  "Hello," she said.  "We just waitin' for whoever else's gonna come?"

Rikkendo hiked his haversack up further onto his back and nodded at all those around him. There certainly were going to be a lot of otters on this quest! That was a good thing. Otters were strong and helpful, and could make things much more fun.

The mouse checked one more time to make sure everything was secure and then began to walk out of the abbey. It was time to go save some good beasts!

Rikkendo nodded to the otter as Avalanche questioned him on his name. "Tis actually quite a long story behind that. Perhaps we can talk about it as we travel?"

Acorn walked across the Abbey lawns, noticing the group of beasts gathering at the gates. Where were they off to? The pretty squirrel came towards the group.

"Where are you all off to?"

Rikkendo answered her. "We're going to rescue some rabbits that have had a run in with some pirates. Care to come along?"

Acorn thought about it for a moment. "Yes, I'd like to come. I think Milo might want to as well. Where has he gotten to?" She looked around, hoping to see the squirrel bell ringer.

The morning was beautiful as far as Miro was concerned.  It wasn't raining, snowing, or foggy, and that was just fine by him.  His paws were nimble against the leaf litter as he moved through Mossflower Wood.

He had slept in that morning, breaking his fast with his only leftover oatcake from the last kindly woodlanders who'd fed him.  Goodbeasts who would offer him food and shelter were few and far between, so he tried to make that food last.

Raising his arms up, he stopped and had a leisurely stretch.  Nothing was better than to do whatever he pleased, day in and day out, with no captain or crew to deal with or order him about.  It looked to be another uneventful day.

Drawing the knife from his belt, Damyan watched the other rat suspiciously from behind a tree. He recognized a searat when he saw one, and was far from pleased to see one this near his home, and this near the abbey. The other rat stopped momentarily, and Damyan decided he'd better get the confrontation over with. He hated the idea of having to use the knife he carried, yet there it was in his paw anyway. Damned if he wouldn't be prepared, in case things didn't go well.

"'Ey! You!" He stepped out towards the other rat, keeping the knife down at his side. "What're you doin' 'ere? You alone?" His tone was a grim, appraising sort of pre-threat, and he glanced up and down the other rat with a look of cautious contempt as he spoke.

The group made their way down the path towards the coast. Rikkendo took in a deep breath, glad to be out in the open. He loved his home at Redwall but he had a spirit deep down inside that made him long for adventure. He looked around, happy to see so many able bodied beasts along for the quest.

Acorn vaulted from tree to tree, keeping an eye out for anything odd up ahead. When they were a few leagues away from the abbey Acorn climbed high into a sycamore tree and peered out over the trees. She saw movement up ahead. Was that a couple of rats? She couldn't be sure. The squirrel rushed down to the group and went to the traveling group.

"I just some a couple beasts up ahead! They could be rats, but I'm not sure..."

Churrup had spotted the traveling group from Redwall. It appeared they were breaking into two groups. The robin flew swiftly down closer to get a better look.

When he was closer the robin could clearly see the rats up ahead of the group. Knowing how Redwallers tended to behave Churrup sighed and swooped down onto the path in front of the group.

"Stop right there!"

Rikkendo moved to stand in front of Churrup. "Scuse us Churrup, but we have vermin to attend to."

The robin held his ground and spoke up. "Well, I shouldn't even warn you. I should have gone to Redwall with this information. They would have rewarded me with seed cakes."

Acorn came to stand beside the would be mouse warrior. "Come now Rikkendo... It sounds like the robin has important news. We should listen to our brave informant."

Churrup bobbed his head to the pretty squirrelmaid and carried on, "as I was about to say... There has been a slave taken and the ship has set out to sea. The sky is beginning to darken and I think it would prove you best to steal a watch on the captain of the slave ship if you want to see that rabbit they took alive ever again. I believe you will be able to catch the Lashkeel in another vessel, but you need to set out for the shore now. Leave the rats and follow me!"

Sure let's follow Churrup if everybeast is willing

Churrup bobbed his head as he replied. "Willing to pay me my seed cakes upon completion of the journey?"

Acorn flicked her tail in agitation. "There are beasts being taken prisoner by pirates and all you can think about are seedcakes?"

"Well, a bird has to eat now doesn't he?"

The squirrelmaid relented. There was no talking sense into some beasts. "Yes, I'm sure there'll be enough seedcake to fill your beak for a season if you help us with the rescue. Now lead the way robin."

Rikkendo hitched up his haversack as he trotted after the robin. He turned to Tia and offered a reassuring smile. He was glad she had come along on the adventure.
______

Night saw the group make their way to the shore. The moon glimmered down over the travelers, illuminating the oily waters of the dock yard.

"Where's the Lashkeel Churrup?"

The robin looked this way and that and then shrugged. "Out to sea I suppose."

Rikkendo sighed. How are we supposed to follow the ship? We don't have a vessel of our own?"

Phillim's ears twitched. It had been many days since she had seen beasts, and here she was, confronted with many creatures in one night. She had no interest meeting these beasts. However, she was trapped between this group, and the wildcats. Suddenly she wished she hadn't thrown the knife away. She backed away as quickly as she could without making much noise into the group of trees. A sharp crack made her grit her teeth with frustration and pain, as a splinter from the stick she had stepped drove itself into her foot.
