On the back of the engilish cover of Salamanderstron there is a vermin flag. On top of that flag is what seems to be the skull of a deer. Do deer live in/around Mossflower country??
There must have been some around somewhere. I know Brian liked sticking to smaller animals in his stories, but deer are still native. Maybe they wanted to keep away from all the vermin and fighting so they all live in a particular, not so explored place on the land.
Yeah, thats probably the best expaination.....
Hmm...Interesting thought! I agree on MeadowRabbit on this one. They probably live somewhere distant like the wolf that Urgan Nagru killed lives.
It's most likely the skull of a smaller animal, like a ferret or weasel or something, unless it has antlers. I can't find a pic of it, if you post one I'll be able to tell better.
Female deer have no antlers.
This skull has antlers. And I don't know how to post pics like that....
You find a picture off of the internet of it the you right click on it. A option should appear that says "Propertys" and you left click on that. Copy the URL of that image then come back to the forum and put it in the url tags. Then click prrview befor you post in then you have it.

Thank you :) I don't have the time right now though....
Basil seems to be a big fan of stags, which I'm pretty sure are deer. But that was in the first book, before he made a solid foundation for his world.
The skull might not have been of a deer....but if basil says that there are Stages, then there must be deers.
Yup!
My guess is that it's just a mistake. There are a few images that are simply wrong, usually it's because the illustrator didn't actually read the book (in some cases because it wasn't finished at that time the illustrations needed to be drawn).
IKR? In Pearls of Lutra, which has like the worst illustrations EVER! of any Redwall book, the mustelids (Romsca, Barranca, and Grath) have little cat-like faces :-X

Yeah, I agree. On one edition of Mariel of Redwall, Gabool had a pistol.
Really?? Can you post it here??
Lets get back on topic, the deer. Usually they run away at the first sight of danger so I would imagine they wouldn't be around Mossflower much. But there was a horse in Redwall, so why not a deer too?
Also, there are pigs, cattle, and goats in Redwall.

That's why I like to think they used guns ;D

I would think they might be extremely rare, but Basil was just lucky to see one
Thats what I think too.

I see what you mean. Well there was a horse in the books.
That's a cool picture.
Thanks Leatho ;) Anyway, as I was saying, deer do exist in the redwall world. However, thinking about it, I think they might only be in the south. At the start of the book, Ferago and the horde are in the south, and thats were they might have found the skull. I don't think they killed it, because the deer could have outran them. Unless it was a really young or old one.

Yes, there have been mistakes in the illustrations of the Redwall books before. Like in one of the editions (Russian?) of
Mariel Of Redwall, Gabool is shown wearing a pistol around his side, even though there are no guns of any kind in the Redwall series. But it can be considered a different case in the thing about the deer skull. The artist who drew Gabool wearing a pistol must have taken a wrong impression on the stereotypes of pirates. But you can't really apply the same theory of stereotyping to deers and what not.
The deer skull on a flag could simply be a stereotype of medieval human flags. You can't really give the illustrations much credence because they are done by other people and do have mistakes - even the Mossflower map changes from book to book / edition to edition.

Yeah, but Mr. Jacques always made a sketch of his own for the illustrator to use as a reference with the maps.
If we want to be picky, that's an awfully small deer skull, what its meant to be I'm not sure, but I wouldn't think deer. Maybe the artist just made it up and put it there because it looked menacing to have a skull affixed to a flag. As for deer, well, I think their size is one reason they aren't brought up. They would in theory tower over every creature in the book; I could see it squashing a rat with its hooves. :P That horse was only in the first book and its not like the horse was a main character either.
It could possibly be a pygmy deer..... :P
Well, we know how accurate the artists have been in drawing some of the covers, so maybe they thought of a pygmy deer. :P
What do you mean by that?

Wow! :o :o :o Is that the german cover of Mossflower?
The point is, it's not true to the book.
But as a side note there are a lot better german redwall covers.
Aye.

These mistakes are the results when an artist who doesn't truly know the world of Redwall is asked to illustrate it.

Well, he found it dead, but it was a full grown wolf. Which means it was alive at one time, and maybe even had a mate and pups.
