Title: Manga/Anime
Post by: Maudie on November 29, 2014, 06:33:54 PM
Ok, in this thread we can talk about this stuff. I wasn't sure where to put it, so it goes in the Cellars.
For those of you not familiar with term Manga it is the Japanese word for Comic, I believe.
I consider myself a mediocre Manga artist. Maybe I'll post my best picture sometime.
Anyway, talk away!

I went on an anime watching spree for a while and finished AoT and Free! and got halfway through OHSHC but I stopped for some reason, possibly fanfiction, possibly Booktube or possibly mock exams.

Anywho, every anime I've watched thus far is awesome and I have a long list of the stuff I want to watch

I don't particularly want to read any manga but I know I'll have to because some animes have read the manga endings which is really annoying

I've finished Free! and Fullmetal Alchemist, and am currently watching Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood primarily, as well as Ouran High School Host Club and Black Butler (both of which I've put on hold as I'm halfway through FMA:B and want to finish it before the end of the year.).  As for manga, I found a good manga reading app, so I'm planning on starting Haikyuu!! and Kuroko no Basuke.  I just started reading Tokyo Ghoul a couple days ago, and it's really dark, but really good.

Skarz, if you don't like Anime, or manga, then there are plenty of topics for you to talk about other things elsewhere.

I myself don't read the manga's, but I started watching some Anime's. SAO was my first, still loving it, and I've started exploring the Gundam world. I buddy of mine recommended watching Gundam: Seed, anyone else know much about it?

I've heard of Sword Art Online (an online friend of mine sings praises about it all the time), but I've never heard of Gundam: Seed.  What's it about?

Giant robot mechs, there are so many Gundam series they can all basically be summed up under that

SAO is pretty cool. I've finished AoT and I've started reading Naruto, Bleach and One Piece. Oh yeah, I've also watched a fair bit of Ouran High.

I'm trying to watch some Free! but because of exams I don't really have the time. :-\

Robots, eh?  I'll have to check it out, then.  ;D

Erg, y'all saying that you're reading/watching AoT makes me really wanna start watching it, but I made myself promise to finish the stuff I started before watching anything else!  Ugh, the problems with finding so many interesting anime and having no time to watch any of them.

Actually, Gundam (or Gunpla, as they're called in the shows) are relatively small plastic models. Thing is, in the series (at least the ones I've seen so far which are, "Gundam Build Fighters," and, "Gundam Build Fighters Try.") the models are brought to life by this thing called a Plavsky particle. The particle not only brings the plastic to life, but allows effects like explosions, lasers, etc. that only work on Gunpla. It's pretty awesome  ;). And yes, SAO is awesome! Things can seem a bit rushed at times, but the story's still pretty good, and the fights are anime level epic. They literally JUST finished season two, though only season one is available dubbed, everything else is subbed.

      What's AoT?

EDIT: Never mind, I should've know something was up when it seemed nobody was talking about Attack on Titan.  ::) I've considered watching it, is it any good? I know it's mainstream popular, but is it worth it?

I'm looking for an anime that's not extremely violent or immoral, any suggestions?

If you like girls manga/anime, I suggest Ouran Highschool Host Club. If you don't mind a little violence, FairyTail is FANTASTIC. If you want a lot of violence, Immortal Rain or Aphorism are awesome.

For the record, only the first two have anime's.

I'd suggest Free! if you like sports anime.  It's about the Iwatobi and the Samezuka swim clubs, and it's a really interesting show.  Lots of fun moments, as well as quite a few emotional ones.  The only downside is that this anime is only subbed (although the Japanese voice actors are AMAZING), but they've just recently announced that the second season's gonna be dubbed (they can't do the first season due to something about the rights to the show).  Still, I suggest watching the subbed before watching the dubbed (whenever that comes out), 'cause those actors are awesome.

@Deli-chan:  If you don't like anime or manga, when why are you visiting the exclusively anime and manga topic?  :P  *Gasp*  You actually like it, don't you?  That's why you're looking at this topic, isn't it?  I'm right, aren't I, Deli-chan?  TELL ME I'M RIGHT!

@Deli-chan:  If you don't like manga or anime, then why are you viewing the thread that specifically says it's devoted to manga and anime?  :P

Mmkay, so I started watching Tokyo Ghoul a couple days ago, even though I haven't finished the manga yet (I'm about a third of the way through, if I remember correctly), and may I just say... WOW.  It's a tad bit hard to follow, as there's a lot of text to read (there's a lot of talking involved, and as there's no dubbed, I'm watching the subbed version), but it's really good.  The manga's hard to follow for all the battle scenes, as there's no colour, so all you see is black and white lines and you have to figure out if it's the character's fist, foot, kagune, or if it's just a sound affect or something.  :P  The anime makes it so much easier to understand what happens when anyone's in a fight, and the kagune are even cooler than they already were, now that I can understand better how they're used.  (Plus the fact that the kagune look beautiful when colour's added.)  Touka's kagune is gorgeous, as is Nishiki's.  ^-^

A bit of warning to anyone thinking about reading/watching Tokyo Ghoul: as it's an anime about ghouls, there's bound to be gore.  Lots of gore.  If that's not your thing, then I suggest you find a different anime to watch, because it's rather bloody.  (Also, the manga has quite a bit of adult language, but I'm not very far into the anime, so I don't know if it shares the language.)

On another note, I started watching Attack on Titan the other day.  I believe I'm ten episodes into that.  Quite an enjoyable anime, even if a lot of it's been spoiled for me, thanks to the internet.  :P  (I really need to learn to stay away from Tumblr blogs that are dedicated to anime I'm going to watch later on.  ::))

When does season 2 come out! I need mooore!  :D I was really surprised, especially for something so brutal. I conferred with a buddy of mine that watches a lot of anime, and it's one of the two most brutal anime in existence (to the best of my knowledge). Seriously, if you have a problem with blood, do not, I repeat, DO NOT watch Attack on Titan. Otherwise, it's awesome! Other than them trying to sell me some ridiculous plot line tricks so early on, it's really solid.  ::)

I've seen Pyscho pass it was a really good anime, a bit gory but left you with good discussions because of it's theme of morals and living in a world run by fear.

Anime's I've seen: FMA, FMA Brotherhood (a favorite of mine), OHHC, Bleach, Trigun, Nabari, Soul Eater, D. Gray Man (one of my all time favorites), Blood+, some of fairy tail, saw some of Naruto but honestly it didn't captivate me much, and many more, I'm just blanking on them right now.

I've heard of it, although I've been rather reluctant to start as there are so many episodes.  :P  (This coming from the girl who watched two hundred episodes of Supernatural in about five months.  :P)  I might start the manga once I'm finished with either Tokyo Ghoul or Alive: The Final Evolution, though.  (I'm about halfway through Tokyo Ghoul, so I don't think it'll take me too terribly long to finish it.)

Thanks for the suggestion, though!  I'll be sure to check it out at some point in the future (probably in a month or two).  :)

Dooo iiiit!  I still haven't finished that one (I keep trying to finish all the anime that I'm watching, but since I watch it so late at night, some nights I just don't feel up to watching anything), but it's really good.  Misa's kind of annoying, though.  But that's okay; L makes up for that.

Okay Light is a total creep. L is pretty adorable though. L is kind of creepy though, I don't think he solves the cases because he cares, I think he just wants to prove he's the best. He doesn't seem fazed by the amount of people killed and he seems willing to expend lives just so he can figure out what Light can do.
Title: Re: Manga/Anime

Yeah, I like the fact that you watch the show from the "villain's" point of view, but at the same time, it's really hard to try and root for the "hero" when he's trying to catch the main character.  Still, I like L a lot more than Light.  Light's just a jerk.  A rather insane jerk.

  What episode are you on?

Death Note got REALLY disturbing. Glad that only lasted one episode.

Death Note episode 16

Sane!Light sitting in the cell screaming his head off was just horrifying. And L became a lot more creepy. His creator has described him as slightly evil, I see that now.

@Banya:  THAT'S the anime I forgot to finish!  I made myself go and finish up till the end of at least the first season of most of the anime I've seen before starting a new one, and I forgot Death Note.  Wonderful.  :P

On another note, I randomly decided to start Trinity Blood a few days ago because it was mentioned on WatchMojo.  It's a pretty interesting anime!  I'd type out what it's about right now, but it's rather late and I'm on my Kindle, so I'll save the description for later.  Just know that it involves an awesome vampire priest who fights other vampires and is equal parts dork and sweetheart.

So not sure where else to put this, as I couldn't find any gritty comic book threads, and I can't be bothered making one.
The Walking Dead.
Oh my gosh, it's incredible. It has the unfortunate habit of killing off all my favourite characters. Seriously, everyone dies. Anyone read/seen it?

Has anyone else heard of the manga/anime Haikyuu!!?  I just started reading the manga last week, and it's really good.  Like, really good.  And I even understand some of the techniques used in it, thanks to the one year I played volleyball and had to learn all the rules!  (For those who don't know, Haikyuu!! is a sports manga/anime that follows the many adventures of the Karasuno High Volleyball Club, with the main character being Shouyou Hinata, a first year who knows nearly nothing about volleyball but can jump extremely high and has lightning fast reflexes.  I know that may sound boring, but trust me, it's really good.  Really.  Good.)

Has anyone else seen Attack on Titan?  How about Code Geass?  The latter was great.  I didn't go as I expected, and I enjoyed that.
As for AoT, I understand now why it's so popular.  It's action-packed from the start, kept me guessing, and offers a great plot with awesome characters.  I can watch it again and again.  It's one of the few animes I've seen that has forced me to read the manga, just out of fascination with the story.  In short, it's wonderful.

I've seen AoT. I don't remember it too well. And I'll watch Code Geass after I finish Hellsing Ultimate.

Has anyone ever seen Howl's Moving Castle? If so, can you tell me what all the hype is about because I was really disappointed by the film as it was completely nonsensical and stupid with a bunch of loose ends left untied and the ending is a total mess. The book, on the other hand, is great.
Title: Re: Manga/Anime
Post by: Banya on December 25, 2015, 04:34:08 PM
I love both the book and film.  The book is better, naturally.

My brother got the first two volumes of the Death Note manga for Christmas.  He's already read them, but our mom didn't know that, so she thought it'd be something he'd like.  I'm jealous because while my brother thought Death Note is okay, it's my very favourite.  I even have the two novels and I've seen the live action film and TV miniseries.  At least he's promised to let me borrow the manga.

My bro got me some Black Butler merchandise.  We laughed our heads off as I showed it to our parents, telling them to ignore the pentagram and the demon (Sebastian).

Ive read a good number of manga/watched quite a few anime, and always on the hunt for more good ones.
some of my faves are: FMA, Baccano!, Bakuman, Noragami, SOA.....
(if no one feels like reviving this thread, I'm down to talk about this in my ask thread. Ask me about anime or manga!!)
Title: Re: Manga/Anime
Post by: Banya on January 14, 2016, 08:29:26 PM
I could talk about this all day with you. :) I haven't read or watched Baccano! yet, but it's on my list.  It was made by the creator of Durarara!!, which is one of my favourites, so I think I'll like it.  I'm reading the novels for DRRR now, and I'll keep buying them as they're released in English.  I made a deal with myself to buy three manga volumes each month: one volume of Death Note, one volume of Attack on Titan, and one volume of Tokyo Ghoul.  They're great stories.

The only anime that I've seen that's on your list is Noragami, and I didn't really care for it.  I don't understand its popularity.  It was a little too silly for my taste, and the plot was incredibly weak.  The lacking plot is the biggest problem I have with it.  I heard Noragami Aragato (the second season) is better, but I'm not motivated to watch it (yet).
Title: Re: Manga/Anime
Post by: Aimless Gallivanter on January 14, 2016, 09:02:46 PM
Yes Durarara is also a good one! Im watching DRRR x2 right now, and I was incredibly excited to learn it was by the same people as Baccano! I was quite surprised that I hadn't realized it earlier, since the themes are even styled similarly!
To be honest, I wasnt that huge of a fan of Noragami either, until the second season came out. The first season's appeal to me came from the characters and the style rather than the plot (which, I agree, was pretty weak).

I havent read/watched Death Note and I started Tokyo Ghoul but never finished it.
I have an AoT print and backpack :)
Title: Re: Manga/Anime
Post by: Banya on January 18, 2016, 12:35:00 AM
Is that a Survey Corps backpack?  Cool!  I have a Survey Corps T-shirt that I wear often.  I'm also a poster collector - I have more than I can fit on the walls and ceiling. :) I'm planning to watch DRRR x2 Shou and Ten soon, but I won't start Ketsu until it's completely out; I find it easier to make connections between episodes that way.  I'm so glad it's close, though!  And no spoilers!

So do you recommend Noragami Aragato?  And does it have a stronger plot?

I recommend Death Note 10/10. :)

The other anime I'm familiar with are Black Butler, Psycho-Pass, Code Geass, and Shiki.  I don't care for Shiki, but it's pretty well-liked by many.  It's supposed to be horror, but I didn't find it scary, and I kind of a chicken when it comes to horror shows/movies.  The other three are excellent.  Black Butler is humourous with good action scenes (though the first episode ups the creepiness factor with a Halloween-esque feeling).  Code Geass is considered mecha, but it's not exclusively mecha.  It also involves strategy, political intrigue, high school life, and a bit of the supernatural, and it makes you think and still blows your mind.  It's really got something for everyone.  I could rave about for hours.  Psycho-Pass is just many levels of wonderful.  I enjoy it because of the broader themes of criminality and freedom it explores.  I really like thought-provoking stories.

Yes it is a Survey Corps backpack! Its pretty much falling apart now though. What are thes Ten and Ketsu you mentioned? Im not familiar with them.
I' have to say yes Noragami Aragato does have a stronger plot. It actually goes into two different arcs. I would recommend it; it does still have its silliness though. And theres some OVA thats horribly subbed but still hilarious! Although, theyre filler episodes so you probably wouldnt find them too intersting.
I watched Black Butler , started Psycho Pass , heard vaguely of Code Geass, and I have no idea what Shiki is!
BB was actually one of my first anime. Cant say its my favorite though. I dropped Psycho Pass , I have a bad habit of forgetting anime after just watching the first episode whoops. Code Geass sounds like it might be similar to Valvrave . I dont enough about either of them though. I only recently started watching Valvrave . Does Shiki maybe go by another name? If its widely known, I'm surprised I havent heard of it. Not that I'm any kind of anime expert :P But I do spend an awful lot of time on tumblr.

Great, Ash!  I look forward to hearing from you about it.

@Galli: Shiki uses the same name for both the Japanese and English versions, so it's easy to find under that name.  It's my brother's favourite, but I couldn't get into it.  Valvrave and Code Geass have the same creator; that's likely why the stories seem so similar.  Ten and Ketsu are two parts of the second season of Durarara!!.  The second season has 36 episodes and is broken into three parts: Durarara!! x2 Shou has 12 episodes and was released last January, x2 Ten has another 12 and was released in July, and x2 Ketsu just began running over a week ago.  I'm really excited for it.

I have watched Puella Magi Madoka Magica, all of RWBY up to this point, Ouran High School Host Club, and all of Sword Art Online up to this point. They all hold a special place in my heart. They have actually taught me a lot of things, in fact.

What each anime has taught me (No spoilers!):

PMMM:

-Your true friends are those that fight for you
-What people show you is not always what is true
-You are more powerful than you realize
-Never make deals that you do not know the consequences to
-People have good reasons for not telling you things

RWBY:
-Don't judge a book by its cover
-Teamwork is stronger than working alone
-It is better to tell people about your problems than to hide them within yourself
-We all have our own power

OHSHC:
-The happiest people can be the most broken
-You do not know why people do what they do unless you ask
-Everyone has that thing they have that makes them special
-Enjoy life and relationships while they last
-Be true to your heart

SAO:
-There are real people behind the screen, and what you say or do really effects real people
-What you do online may even be more important than what you do in real life, for how you act online can shape your character
-Online friendships can become real life friendships
-You see people how they truly wish to be online - how they really wish to express themselves

I am also looking for a new anime to watch. Any suggestions?
Title: Re: Manga/Anime
Post by: Banya on December 10, 2015, 03:26:56 AM
That's a great way to analyze and remember each anime.

Here are a few suggestions and reasons why they're favourites of mine.

Durarara!!
- I've never seen anything like it.  It features a large cast of incredible characters connected despite the large size of the Tokyo district they live in.  One action sets other events into motion that impacts everyone else.  This show reflects friendship, togetherness, and the human desire to evolve.

Attack on Titan
- It's full of action from the start, and the main character doesn't wait to discover his inner strength and drive.  Despite the odds he faces, he shows heart and unwavering determination.  It's no wonder this is one of the mainstream animes.

Death Note
- Maybe its title is foreboding, but this anime questions morality: what is good and what is evil, and where is the line between the two drawn?  The viewer has to be wide awake to keep up.

Psycho-Pass
- This dystopian sci-fi anime is exciting and thought-provoking for sociologists like myself.  It questions the centuries-old argument on the balance between freedom and security and features a rarely-seen three-sided battle among characters.  This is also perfect for someone familiar with literature like 1984 and Heart of Darkness, and it offers scenes of trust, teamwork, and friendship without hints of romance.

I hope you find one you like out of these!

Most people, I think, consider it an anime, just an American one.  I hope you enjoy it!
I'm currently watching Tokyo Ghoul, and I really like it.  It provokes some interesting thoughts on the right to live and defining evil.  I tend to like best stories that explore themes like this.

Another great anime film is Wolf Children.  Maybe you've heard of it; it's well-known, and I heard nothing but good things about it before seeing it for myself.  It's a wonderful story.

Okay Hellsing Ultimate is crazy. Great but crazy.

Here's the plot: An army of Nazi vampires plans to invade England. The main character is Alucard, the most powerful vampire there ever was.

BE WARNED! There is some messed up stuff in this show. It is INCREDIBLY gory. The backstory of both of our main characters (Alucard and his fledgling Seras Victoria) is disgusting and includes sexual assault in some form.

Also one of the main villains is a Catholic Archbishop who leads an army of Papal Knights then gets drunk on his own power.

There's also a 'good' Catholic if that helps. (Good in that he's one of the protagonists, that is. NONE of the characters are in any way morally good.) Alexander Anderson of the Iscariot Organisation. You probably understand the significance of that name.

One more episode to go; I'm excited to see how this all ends.

Big info dump:

Angel Beats! is a wonderful show!  I loved it!  It's about teens who are sent to a limbo-like afterlife that's meant to help them resolve any lingering emotions and unfinished goals they carry with them from their lives; those emotions have prevented them from moving on to whatever is beyond this afterlife.  Instead of resolving their problems, they create a battlefront and fight against the closure they're supposed to reach, refusing to accept the unfair lives they lived.  Naturally, it's got a lot of feels, because not only is every character already dead and you get to know a little about their unfair lives before death, but everything that happens in the afterlife is moving as well.  That said, it's absolutely hilarious, too.  It's best summed up like this: At first, I was crying with laughter; then, I was just crying.  For those who care, while the characters believe in God, and their goal is to defy Him, there is no role for the divine in the show, and the characters and the show don't attack, insult, or offend any religion.
The first volume of the manga, Angel Beats!: Heaven's Door comes out Tuesday, and I've already got it pre-ordered and on its way.  It follows events that happened many years prior to the events in the anime.

I also recently watched Deadman Wonderland, which was interesting.  It's too bad there won't be a second season.  I wouldn't recommend this show to those who feel faint about blood.  Not only is there a lot of bloodshed, but the weapons the characters use are made of their blood.  I think it's interesting, but roommate felt really faint when I showed her an image of a character wielding blood blades that he cut from his arms.

Updates...

In regards to a former post, forget Tokyo Ghoul the anime. The manga is where it's at. The story is incredible; it's a real shame that so much of the story was changed, left out, and toned down to make the anime. The second series of the manga, :re, is amazing. I'm always looking forward to a new chapter being translated each week.

Deadman Wonderland is also an amazing manga, with the bonus of an anime that closely follows the story (though leaving out many interesting, important characters). It's no wonder it's got such a die-hard fan community.

In other anime news, I'm just getting into Naruto. It's a huge but enjoyable commitment. I didn't really get "into it" until the episodes were in the 40s, but now I have to limit myself on how many episodes I watch at a time. It's no wonder it's so popular; it's that good. Its themes are what I like most about it. Naruto believes that people are free to make their own choices; no one is resigned to a destiny set for them. He also argues that people who fight to protect someone else can never be considered weak. It's really an inspiring show.

Baccano! was as entertaining as it was confusing. It wasn't until the last episode that I thought, "Oh, things are making sense." Narita's famous for that in his works, and he does it well. The first novel, The Rolling Bootlegs, which was published years ago in Japan, was just released in English last week.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood was one of the funniest shows I've ever seen. Bonus points for the blooper reel on YouTube. It's got a great cast of characters and many stand-up-and-cheer moments. My one complaint with it probably won't be shared by many, but that's that all 64 episodes occur in one plot. There are several story arcs that tie together, but they are all a part of one greater plot. It's a great storyline, but its length makes it really easy to forget key events and even many characters, unless you somehow manage to binge it in less than a week. Watching episode 49 reference something in episode 8 (for example) made me have to pause the show and review things.

Black Lagoon is rated for mature audiences and that should be taken to heart. It's not that the main character's obscene language will damage the viewer, it's combining the language, violence, and other elements of R-rated TV. I did like it, especially the shoot-out scenes, but I wasn't so hung on the plot that I'm anxious to start the second season. The plot can be summarized thusly: It's a show about guns and explosives.

Blood-C is the absolute limit to gore that I can handle (I don't have a high tolerance for gore). I guess you should expect some violence in a show with "blood" in the title, but I wasn't expecting that. However, violence aside, the plot was a lot better than I imagined. As in, there is a plot, and it's good. The short series is followed by a movie, The Last Dark (still not sure what that means). Also good. I wasn't expecting to like this series; I only watched it on a recommendation from a fellow action-loving friend, and I really liked it.

Finally, I just finished No. 6 tonight. I was expecting a futuristic, sci-fi story somewhat like a more youthful version of Psycho-Pass in which the protagonists uncover and right the flaws in their heavily-government-regulated society. I got that, but even more than that, I got BL. And it was great. Usually when two male protagonists work together toward a goal, mold each others' hearts, face conflict together, and show how much they mean to each other in conflict, the BL exists solely within the fandom. In this case, it's canon, and it's wonderful. The plot surrounding their society was pretty good, but the development of their relationship was better. Nothing obscene or inappropriate occurs; they ways the two main characters changed each others' hearts, saved each others' lives several times over, and influenced each others' personalities since their first encounter as children made a great story. I'm still reeling.

Anyone else here watch Boku no Hero Academia (My Hero Academy)?  It's an anime about a kid who lives in a world that's eighty percent superheroes, and most kids are born with a Quirk (a superpower, basically), so pretty much all kids want to grow up to be a superhero.  The protagonist, Izuku, is no exception to this, but there's one problem: he was born without a Quirk.  This means that pretty much everyone looks down on him and tries to keep him from becoming a superhero.

I've only seen a few episodes of it, but it's already quickly becoming one of my favourite anime.  I mean, look at the main character!

  Izuku is so adorable.  :D

Or there's also All Might, who's the most fantastic superhero ever.  ;D

So, yeah, Boku no Hero Academia.  S'a good anime.  I like it.

What?! The self-proclaimed anime non-fan is posting here?!
Yeah, yeah, whatever.

If anyone likes fantasy stuff, Grimgarr of Fantasy and Ash is a pretty good anime. The animation is pretty smooth, the cinematics are beautiful, and the characters are interesting. I definitely recommend watching the dubbed version, though. You really get a better feel for the characters when you're not reading inaccurate sketchy translations.
There's blood and fighting, though, so anyone who doesn't like that shouldn't watch it. Other than that, it's pretty clean. No swearing, minimal physical. . . exhibition, and no dirty jokes.
It dabbles very much with the importance of a good team, using one's own specific skills and strengths to help each other, and dealing with loss and frustration.

I went to an anime convention over the weekend and had an amazing time! Friday, I cosplayed as Armin from Attack on Titan. I went by myself, and while wandering, heard people yelling my character's name. I met up with an Eren and their two friends, and shorty after we met a Levi. The five of us decided to hang out together in uniform and we had fun throughout the evening. Saturday, I went with my brother. He felt a little out of place not in cosplay, while I was Mello from Death Note. We played a Death Note version of Mafia with a large group of other people, around nineteen of us, for several hours, as well as playing/viewing several other games. We didn't go back Sunday, opting to spend the day with our parents, but the con was great.

HOLY [rat] A BERSERK SEQUEL WOULD BE AWESOME!

I do hope they don't use a modern anime art style, though. One great thing about Berserk is it's art style.

EDIT: Not too sure about the 3D. It works really well if they execute it properly, but if they don't it's immersion breaking and weird.

I went to another con this weekend, Anime Midwest in Chicago, and had one of the best weekends ever. Friday I cosplayed Eto from Tokyo Ghoul, and I used the costume again for a TG photoshoot Saturday morning. When the official photos are posted, I'd love to share them. Saturday I cosplayed Doll from Black Butler, and all of the time and work I put into it paid off. Most of the fun of the weekend was in posing for photos and asking others for permission to take photos of their cosplays. On top of that were all of the activities and food and shows and swag from the artists' alley... it was a great con.

Update!

RWBY:
-Don't trust someone just because they're friendly.
-Real warriors sacrifice themselves
-Unless stopped, evil will never stop growing

Avatar: the Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra:
-Never give up
-You find yourself on the inside
-Enemies can turn into friends, and friends can turn into enemies
-Power and fame can be crutches
-There are no good or bad nations
-There are wonderful and terrible people in each nation
-People can be convinced that what they're doing is right, when it is not

Your Lie in April:
-Music isn't just music - it is the extension of someone
-Always say what you feel
-The most bitter or angry people may care very deeply about you
-Never forget those you've lost, but don't let your missing of them or your guilt hold you back

SAO II:
-Killing in self-defense is not murder
-Sometimes you have to fake confidence until you truly are confident
-If something is wrong, tell someone, because one day it will be too late
-Have a dream, however small, and chase it

I recently watched SAO II and the most recent episodes or RWBY. I have watched a few episodes of Hetalia: Axis Powers and Fruits Basket, but I'm still getting into those.

I use kissanime. It's also got a page for cartoons that I use to watch ATLA and LoK.

Updates:
Mirai Nikki/Future Diary: For all the hype I got for it, I didn't like this show. I had trouble watching it all the way through. The last couple of episodes got me, though, and the fact that I haven't been able to get it off my mind since finishing it means the story creator did something right.

Owari no Seraph/Seraph of the End: I really like this story. It had a pretty good storyline even before introducing the "seraph of the end," but maybe I just think that because they didn't allow themselves the time in the anime to fully explain the concept behind the title. I'm going to read the manga to get more of the story, because the anime left off where there's clearly more about to happen. I like that in this story, humans are, by default, the 'good guys,' but some humans are worse than the villains in their greed. It's got a lot of interesting characters; unfortunately, I don't like any of the female characters.

Noblesse: A Korean manhwa, it can be found on manga websites. It combines a lot of supernatural creatures and elements, but it doesn't fall under "it's been done before." I'm reading it pretty quickly. It's good.

I spent most of the summer watching Naruto and started Naruto Shippuden two weeks ago. I get why the series is so popular. The story is amazing, and I love the characters.

I have three conventions lined up for this fall:
Ramencon in Indiana, September 23-25
Youmacon in Detroit, November 3-6
Con+Alt+Delete in Chicago, December 16-18

Any chance anyone else will be at one of them?

The original anime, even though the end was a sequel hook.

About that...  Did you know that there's a sequel film that sorta tries to wrap everything up?  It's called Conqueror of Shamballa, and I don't know about anyone else, but I enjoyed it.  If I remember this correctly, it even has Al's original actor in it for the dub, which is awesome because I love his original actor's voice.  It took me awhile to get used to a woman playing Al in Brotherhood, simply because I was already so familiar with him being an actual twelve-year-old boy.  :P

I've heard terrible things about that film, but if you like it, and since I like the series, I may watch it.

As for Al's VA in Brotherhood, I love Maxey Whitehead's voice. She was amazing as Juuzou in Tokyo Ghoul.

Eh, it could just be that the film is absolutely horrendous and I have bad taste, but you can watch it if you like.  :P

Oh, yeah, no, I'm not saying her voice is bad at all!  It's just that I went directly from FMA to FMA:B and the abrupt change in voice actors was a bit jarring for me.  The original kid (whose name escapes me) is still my favourite of the two, but both are quite good.

I've watched both the originally full metal alchemist and brotherhood. Out of the two I personally like brotherhood better because it stays true to the manga. I learned that the original series started when the manga was still on going. They surpassed where the manga was and since they didn't have anything to work off of they went a completely different route then what was intended in the manga. That being said I can see why I thought the first anime felt disjointed and odd because when they started they didn't have an end or resolution in mind.

*revive*

I have one roommate who almost exclusively watches cooking shows. I sent her a link to Food Wars hoping to get her into some anime. Here's to hoping she likes it. I haven't even seen it, so I don't know.

I went to a con in Detroit this past weekend, and it was another great time. Thursday I was Isabel from Attack on Titan in her underground attire from the manga. Friday I was Isabel in her Survey Corps uniform. Saturday I was Doll from Black Butler again because the weather was pretty warm, and Sunday I was tired and went as Erika from Durarara!!, a really comfortable, low-key cosplay. I bought six more pins for myself, one each for three good friends of mine who like Studio Ghibli and Pokemon, and I bought three prints from various vendors and managed to get two free, walking out with everything that I'd desperately wanted, still within my budget. I saw some great panels, including an 18+ with J. Michael Tatum and his boyfriend and an 18+ with Todd Haberkorn, some not so great panels, some circus performers, and some impressive cosplays. These weekends are so good for the mind and spirit.

I just watched Mob Psycho 100, which i really super looked. There's only twelve episodes and i think it's considered over? But there wasn't actually closure in the show so I'm confused. It seems like there could be a lot more, i hope it wasn't cancelled.
Anyway it's about a young boy with psychic powers and struggling to live with them. It's super good.

*bump* *huge info dump*

I love Yuri!!! on Ice so much. SO MUCH. It's visually beautiful. It's musically beautiful. The story is beautiful. The characters are beautiful. Oh my word.

I just finished Assassination Classroom, and it was amazing. The turns the story took were unpredictable and endlessly entertaining. The show was hilarious and the end was emotional. Loved it.
Here's a 20-inch chalk drawing I did last night of the main character.
Nagisa, Assassination Classroom

One Punch Man I didn't love so much. I didn't like the gore, and it was entertaining at first but it lost that quality halfway through. If it had been more than 12 episodes I probably would've shelved it.

Mekakucity Actors was pretty good. I liked the characters and thought their powers had potential for a good story, but the story given wasn't strong.

K-Project is great. I'm a fan. Really good action scenes, visually gorgeous, good music too. I like the characters and their relationships, but there are some backstories/explanations missing. I've heard a third season is in the works, and I hope that's more than just a rumour.

I have another con this weekend!! It's called Con+Alt+Delete and is in Chicago. Friday evening I'm in an 18+ Black Butler panel reprising my Doll cosplay. I've had fun talking to and planning with the others in the panel; there are 10 of us total, and the others are so much more experienced in the con-going community than I am, so there's a lot I can learn from them. Other than Doll, I'm going as Yurio from Yuri!!! on Ice, Isabel from Attack on Titan, and Konan from Naruto. This morning I spent several hours making Konan's paper flower bouquet.
Konan's bouquet
I made the origami flowers about a month ago. I've never done origami before, so starting with something as difficult as a rose was a challenge, and it took a few hours to get the first one right, but now I can do one in 5-10 minutes and they turn out pretty nice. The bouquet has 11 roses. The outer part of the bouquet is a piece of flipchart paper cut into rectangles and taped together, then wrapped into a cone with the tape on the inside. I cut up another piece of flipchart paper and crumpled it up to fill the cone, then taped the roses into place on top of it. I'm happy with this thing I made. Counting the 1+ hour it took to make the roses, I think it took about 5 hours total.

I started a new one recently called No Game No Life. It's a bit more inappropriate than I expected or am used to, but it's still really interesting. I love it when characters are clever.

My favorite scene so far (I just started it today) was in I think episode 3 or 4, with the queen and the knight in the unusual chess match. It's a small moment, but I found it touching.

EDIT: I finished the whole thing in one day...? Guess I'll just have to wait until the next season comes out. :P
Title: Re: Manga/Anime
Post by: Banya on February 18, 2017, 11:46:32 PM
I finished Nabari no Ou yesterday. It was wonderful from start to finish. I love the relationships between the characters, and I don't mind that the action took a backseat to relationship development. The ending broke me.

I also watched Bungou Stray Dogs this morning. It was so good that I watched the whole thing in one sitting without meaning to. It was hilarious but also had a good story and great fighting scenes, and visually, it's probably the second-prettiest anime I've seen, coming in after K-Project and just ahead of Yuri!!! on Ice. Would recommend.

Edit: I finished Joker Game a few weeks ago. It's about Japanese spies just before the outbreak of World War II. It became pretty episodic a short way in, but I still liked tying the characters and plot back to the first few episodes. It all makes sense, and it was a good watch. I'd watch it again.

Edit 2: I went to another con a month ago. Ohayocon in Columbus, Ohio. It's in 6th place among the 6 cons I've been to, but it was all right. Things they did wrong include having small panel rooms (not that they can really help that) that limited the number of people who could get in, making people who really wanted to see a specific panel have to get in line an hour or more ahead of time and miss out on other things. I didn't want to spend all my time in lines, so I passed on a lot of panels I'd have liked to see. They also had wristbands instead of badges on lanyards, which were incompatible with many people's cosplays and couldn't be removed during photoshoots. I wanted to wear my Eto Yoshimura cosplay from Tokyo Ghoul one day but couldn't, as it involves a morphsuit, and I couldn't cover my wristband. I did, however, go as Doll from Black Butler (again), Yurio from Yuri!!! on Ice, and Karin from Naruto Shippuden. I went with five guys from my university anime club, though I didn't hang out with them the whole time.

My uni anime club also put on a mini-con last Saturday. It was fun and got a number of people from campus there in cosplay. I went as Tenten from Naruto Shippuden. We had all the usual things a con has: a cosplay contest, anime jeopardy, anime name that tune, panels, vendors and artists, and a maid cafe. I was responsible for stopping and starting episodes in screenings, selling raffle tickets, and helping raffle off merch. Because of the screenings, I kind of got into Snow White with the Red Hair. It's cute, kind of medieval, reminds me of the kind of books I liked as a kid/teen, and I plan to keep watching.

^Ash that's Dragon Ball.

@Sierra Kuroko no Basuke has been recommended to me by so many different people, it's near the top of my to-watch list.

Okay, updates...

I watched the short Arcana Famiglia, a mafia anime. It takes place in Italy and the English subs used a lot of Italian words, thanks?? The first episode had promise but the story didn't go where I expected it to go. The introduction of the characters and their abilities was so forced it was almost cringey. It actually did get better as it went on and ended strong, but they sacrificed a lot of action for relationship development between the characters. That being said, the characters were great, except for the lack of a villain. I enjoyed it, but overall it's a really forgettable anime.

I'm watching the airing Saga of Tanya the Evil, and while I haven't made up my mind on it yet, I'm enjoying the World War I action. The art style is different, too. It's interesting to have an evil main character, and Tanya is pretty twisted. I've watched it dubbed so far, and while Monica Rial and J Michael Tatum are AMAZING voice actors, it'd be nice to have well-done dub without those two, simply because their voices are so distinguishable.

Finally, I have another con TOMORROW, Shuto Con in Lansing. Their rules are pretty standard: shoes at all times, no live steel, etc., but one of the official con rules is "No didgeridoos over 12 ft," and I'm so curious about what happened to make than an official con rule.
My roommate is going to the con with me on Friday and I'm so excited to share this other side of my life with her. Two of my favourite things together.
Lineup... Friday I'm going as Tenten from Naruto and the roomie is going as fem Captain America. She already had a mask and shield, everything. Cap's her fave. She's been leaving the mask propped up in the bedroom in odd places to stare at me. It's sadistic. Saturday I'm reprising Tenten for the Naruto meetup and afterward changing into Atsushi from Bungou Stray Dogs. Sunday I'll be Yoite from Nabari no Ou. I stayed up all night last night to style all three wigs, and they all turned out well. So no con crunch today; my body and soul are ready. It's over two months since my last con and the excitement is killing me.

I've watched the entire Dragon Ball series (not Dragon Ball Z, I mean the actual original Dragon Ball. I've only seen the first 13 episodes of Z and a couple of "growing-up" animes here and there. The only one that I can remember watching right off the top of my head is Kokoro Connect, and I started it like nine months ago  but I haven't even finished it yet...
Title: Re: Manga/Anime
Post by: Banya on March 22, 2017, 04:03:54 AM
Someone just recommended Kokoro Connect to me, said it's their absolute favourite, but they had questionable taste in waifus so we'll see.

Rumour has it Naruto Shippuden is ending on Thursday with the release of their 500th episode, and it leaves me feeling a little hollow inside.

The con was good! It was a small con centre that was packed with people. The dealers' room was huge and I didn't really plan a budget, so I spent all the money I had on me, but there were only four panel rooms and events didn't run very late, so after the dealers' room closed and the meetups ended there wasn't a lot to do. Fun weekend overall!

The first ep of the 2nd season of Attack on Titan came out just after midnight today and it is AMAZING. The manga is fantastic, but the stylistic things they add to the show give me goosebumps and I was screaming. I already loved the animation, and it's improved since the first season was released four years ago. I love it, and I love that they keep the anime true to the original story.

Finally watched Free! and I loved it! Also enjoyed Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress, which is sort of Attack on Titan set in Japan, but I didn't like it nearly as much as AoT. Kiznaiver was good - I think if you like Mekakucity Actors you'll like Kiznaiver; they look and feel very similar with interesting social/friendship themes. And right now I'm watching Nanbaka, which is a funny and pretty ridiculous gag anime about prison inmates, if you need fluff.

I went to Anime Central last weekend, which is a pretty big con in Chicago. I bought a lot of prints and got several free things and re-connected with friends I haven't seen in months. Altogether a really good time.

Soooo... I just finished watching the 2003 Fullmetal Alchemist.  The English dub, of course.  My first real anime.  It was wild and largely enjoyable.  The first half was the best.

So.  I haven't watched Conqueror of Shamballa, but tbh I don't know if it's worth it right now since the main story's over and I do really want to watch Brotherhood.  But, um... I'm also extremely nervous about Brotherhood because I've read a lot of spoilers and it seems like it's a theological quagmire.

EDIT:  (Removed lengthy ramble about my concerns.)  I've done some more research, and I don't really need a response now after all. XD

I have a friend that feels he can't watch it solely because of Midoriya. The way my friend puts it, Midoriya suffers from something that he refers to as, "Twilight syndrome," which is a character that's essentially an empty shell that isn't particularly interesting in and of them self. He's surrounded by a cast of far more interesting characters while he bears no real weight unless he's paired with someone else so that he can affect them. These kinds of characters are great for viewers to project themselves into, but can be a huge turn off if you're only interested in spectating. I know I've still enjoyed it due to some of the other characters, but I totally see where he's coming from.

- - - - - - -

Indeed, Mob has a very real set of traits that honestly make perfect sense in terms of how they've played out under the circumstances of the anime, especially this season. I get tingles every time I hear, "Explosion of Mob Feelings," because everything that happens in the series is guaranteed to be better if He's fed up with whichever individual is inconveniencing him at the moment. On that note, sound design is fantastic for the show, they don't even need to show Mob's percentage rising all the time for the viewer to recognize that someone dun goofed because of how well the tick up sound stands out. The art style fits so well too, love that they went with something a bit more abstract because of the flexibility it offers when the animators/artists are working through the psychic-heavy scenes (especially Mob's). What's you're opinion of Reigen?

I've been watching fairytale and a really good show that I can't remember the name of about someone going back in time to prevent several murders that happened when the protagonist was in elementary school.

I love the music in Mob Psycho.

Reigen. . . I don't know. He's a genuinely nice guy with some great advice sometimes  but is also the kind of guy who would try to convince you that his flip phone is better than your touch screen phone, and attempt to trade. Funny as an addition to the story, but I wouldn't want him as more than an acquaintance.

I get what he's saying and I've talked with others who feel similarly about Deku. I love him, though, and I *do* think he has a lot of character, but it's the massive cast that really makes the show great. In how many series is the main character your favorite, anyway? But this show has a plot that's not really that original with a main character whose abilities aren't unique, but it's got a variety of interesting characters and personalities with incredibly creative abilities, and that's what's exciting for me.

Deku and Midoriya are one and the same. Pretty sure Deku was a nickname that he got from the exploding guy.

@Banya, no, I haven't seen it. I have considered it, but never have.

Um... yes? She obviously knows that otherwise her comment would've been a complete non-sequitur. She was just calling him Deku because it's what he's most commonly known as, and probably because it's shorter to type.

There are two ways to read that first sentence, albeit, the way I read and understood it may make more sense if there was a comma after the first, "And." At that point I thought a new independent statement was being made, seemingly acknowledging my statement before making a comment on another character which would've made perfect sense if said clauses were actually independent. Regardless, there is nothing to be added to the actual conversation at hand here.

Actually, Fairy Tail, OPM, and (though it's not technically anime) The Last Airbender (who's main character my friend and I would argue could really be Zuko) all contain protagonists that I personally found to be fantastic (to the point of favorite-hood). Natsu, though similar to Deku in some of his tropes, is a far more flexible character with more variance in responses (as well as being someone that's actually amusing). Saitama is the primary source of hilarity and feels so relatable despite how clearly unobtainable his power is.

There are a few more I could name as favorites or close to favorite, but I'm sure you get the point  ;). I understand your point, as the main character of the story very commonly becomes more the method of delivery instead of a fully unique individual, I just think that there are some people that utilize both of those aspects so well I have a hard time not liking them immensely.

Has anyone else been following Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba)?  Episode nineteen blew up all over the internet when it was released a few weeks ago, and it deserves it.   This show, guys, this show.  The characters, the storyline, the artwork, the feels... it's incredible.

Please say I'm not the only one here who's watching it...

@One-Eye the wildcat  I have a friend who really likes that one.

Soooo... MyAnimeList is both a blessing and a curse.  Keeping track of everything I've seen is cool, but I also get to know how much time I've wasted spent on anime. >.>

So far, the ones I've completed (as in, seen every episode available, plus OVAs) are:

Fullmetal Alchemist (dub)
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (dub)
The Promised Neverland (sub)
Attack on Titan (dub mostly, but some sub)
Violet Evergarden (sub; haven't seen the movie though)
Mob Psycho 100 (dub)  edit: okay, I lied.  apparently there are a couple OVAs for this one that I forgot about and haven't seen)
Noragami (sub)

...Okay, that looks so paltry when you aren't counting separate seasons as their own show like MAL does, but it's somewhere around 264 episodes.

And of course, I'm in the middle of several others.  Feel free to discuss any of these with me on my ask thread!

I've read some of the manga.  Didn't get far into it, but it's certainly interesting.

It really is!  I even got my mom to watch it, and she really enjoyed it.  I'm trying to read the manga from where the show left off, but I haven't gotten too far yet.
