Title: How did you first find out about Redwall?
Post by: Matthias720 on June 10, 2011, 09:09:07 PM
I first found out about Redwall during the summer between fourth grade and fifth. I was bored one afternoon, so I turned the TV to PBS, and it was then I became enchanted by this amazing animated TV show I had never seen before. I sat through the first episode of Redwall with hardly a breath passing my lips. I loved the show so much that I immediately told my mother all about it.

The next time I went to the library (which was pretty frequent, and still is), I looked on the library's computer catalog to see if this show had been based on a book; lo and behold, it was! Soon, I was reading through them with great alacrity. Brian Jacques had transported me into a world I didn't know that I wanted to go to, but was grateful I had found. Currently, I own the complete series, and have read through most of the books at least a dozen times (probably more) and I have a few of the audio books, too.

Now it's your turn. Please share how you found out about Redwall and your journey to being a fan. I can't wait to hear how you all became Redwallers. 8)

That's awesome you found out about it through the TV series!! I loved the series, it was a ritual for me to watch every single episode whenever they came on. And I never minded reruns, watching the story come to life was always so magical for me and my sister.

I heard about the Redwall series from my 6th grade teacher, but I didn't start reading them until the following year when I was homeschooled. I loved the series immediately, bought all the books (the most recent one was Taggerung, at the time), and soon logged on redwall.org to find out how else I could express my love as a fan. =)

I first found out about Redwall from a friend of mine when I was six and got the first book on tape and listened to the whole thing in two days!  I just couldn't stop!!  After that I continued listening to them until I could read them for myself and have been reading them since.
I remember watching the show and one night missing an episode and my sister said "It was only a re-run" but even then I was so upset that I had missed it!

Glad to meet a fellow former homeschooler. :) I was homeschooled from 7th grade through 12th.

I slowly started buying the books when I would get the money, but the first one I bought when it first came out was Triss.

I remember that feeling well. That sudden horror when you realized that while you were busy with something like a toy (LEGOs in my case) time had slipped by you, and the show ended 20 minutes ago. Sometimes it irked me that by losing track of time, I had let something precious go by. That would make me feel sad inside. Then I would pick myself up, pop in a VHS I had recorded of all the episodes, find the one I just missed, and watch it again.

Back in 1986, I was 9 years old at the time and we used to have a leaflet come into the school every now and then for the kids to buy books and get into reading more, I think it was called the 'Chip Book Club' or something like that, and they used to highlight a book as their 'Editor's Choice' whenever they printed a new leaflet....one time they had The Hobbit as the editor's choice, for instance. Well, when Redwall was released it was featured as the editor's choice and when I read the description of it, I immediately pestered my mother to let me have some pocket money in advance to buy it with as I'd also bought The Hobbit and loved it, and Redwall immediately appealed to me.

Well I got the book and the rest is history, I've been collecting and reading them ever since, and in recent years have also enjoyed some of Brian's other non-Redwall related books like Castaways Of the Flying Dutchman.  :) (which I'm very fortunate to have a signed copy of).

Along with JRR Tolkien (thanks to The Hobbit), it was definitely Brian Jacques who really got me into reading as an enjoyable hobby all those years back, and I'll always be grateful to them for that.

Around the age of 9, I was directed towards the books by my elementary school librarian. Within a year I'd read all of them and was waiting on the next to come out. It pretty much sparked my enjoyment of reading that persists to this day.

I randomly picked up a copy of The Bellmaker at my local library when I was 9.  I had never heard of Redwall before, but I remember loving how heavy the hardcover book felt in my hand, how thick it was, how the pages smelled when I flipped through it.  It was really worn, but you could tell that no one had damaged it on purpose; just that many people had read this book and loved it.  Just from looking at the magnificient cover illustrations, I knew that this would be a book full of adventure, glory and other romanticisms that would satisfy me for months.  It took me the whole summer to get through The Bellmaker, but I loved every hour I spent poring through its pages, trying to fathom out questions like "Is this is a religious book?" (I thought Martin was a symbol for some kind of religious figure) and "What on earth is a Dibbun?"  Eventually I read the series in order after consulting a friend, but The Bellmaker will always be my favorite book.

I was walking around town with my grandmother when I was 9 or 10
and went in to the second hand bookshop
I asked them if they had any brand new  kids books that just came out
and they showed me a few but I was just about to leave when I saw Outcast of Redwall and enjoyed every bit of it
After that I lost it when I was 12 or 13
But then I saw it in a bookshop one day a few months ago and remembered it
I'm collecting the series now
So far I own all of them up to The Taggerung
and I'm hopefully getting a few more in 2 weeks  :)
My favorite book is Mossflower

First of all Go homeschoolers :)  I first heard of redwall about five years ago when a friend of my brother told him about the books, my brother checked one of the books out from our library and he loved it, he told me i that i should read it but i didn't think i would like it so i ignored his advice (Big mistake) he started to collect the redwall books and read them(He owns almost all of them now). after a few months of listening to him telling me how great these books where i finally decided to read them and i was hooked. i have ready all but his newest two books and i am loving them. I think one  of the thing s that made me love these books and Brian Jacques writing was how descriptive he is when writing, i can see every thing that he is describing as if they where right in front  of me, especially when he describes the feasts of redwall (they make me so hungry ), i will miss waiting to see his next book, R.I.P Brian Jacques you will be missed

I first found out about Redwall by checking out a redwall book in my library.
I checked out martin the warrior, and fell in love with it. I have been a huge redwall fan ever since.
I also love the Legend of Luke and Mossflower those three are my favs.
:)
I enjoyed Martin the Warrior so much I read it again and again. I plan on keeping it and my other books for a long time, because they could possibly be worth something someday. ;)
I wish Brian would have written more books about Martin, because all the books about him are ALWAYS exciting. Brian Jacques if not my favorite author he's in my top three, and here they are.
1. J.R.R. TOLKIEN and THE LORD OF THE RINGS.
2. BRIAN JACQUES and the REDWALL series. ( Except for Martin the Warrior. )
3. C.S. LEWIS and THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA.

I found Redwall when I was in fifth grade. It seemed like everybody was reading it but I'd never been particularly interested because for some reason I thought it'd be like Where the Red Fern Grows, not something I was fond of at the time. I didn't like Redwall particularly but continued with the series out of boredom anyway and fell in love with Gonff and Martin - especially Gonff!

These days I love the hares most, but it was Gonff that got me into the series for good.

I didn't hear about the TV series until it had stopped running, I'm so jealous! I'd love to get my hands on it!

I had trouble reading when I was young. Then one day my brothers brought home the Redwall audiobook, my brothers discouraged me from listening to it. Saying I would find it "scary. I never did, not once. I loved Redwall, without it I might never have gotten so into reading (and I now read a great deal). Though it did earn me that most awful of American nicknames, a "book nerd" :P
Wasn't fantastic to listen to the writer narrating his own story, just how Dickens would have done it!

Some guy who was in my class, final year of elementary school, came to me with the third part of Mossflower (the dutch version, which were published as three seperate books) and said: `You need to read this, you will like it.'
`So I started to read the third part of Mossflower, and I did it again, and again. Man, I was hooked! I spend the next week searching in local libraries to find the first two parts. Then, after some more time passed, I found Redwall and Mariel hidden away in a big library. I read them, and I was even more hooked. I found out about the other 18 Redwall books much later on, but they were in English. English is no problem for me, so I bought every book in English as well.'

I just discovered Brian Jacques in the past year.  I was kind of sick of the books I was reading, and just wanted to hear a darn good story again, and somehow stumbled across Brian.  I think I saw some youtube videos of him speaking, and I thought, "This guy is too awesome not to pass up his books."  I wrote a review/tribute about Brian soon after he passed, which you can find at
http://www.rabbitroom.com/2011/02/medicine-for-the-recovering-english-major/ (http://www.rabbitroom.com/2011/02/medicine-for-the-recovering-english-major/).

I discovered Redwall when I was eight. My mom had gotten Taggerung for my dad to read, and I was in their room looking at their books. I saw Taggerung and looked at the back, and asked if I could read it. My mom told me that it was part of a series and that I should read the first one first. So a few days later she bought me a copy of Redwall. I devoured it, and the rest is history.

A new Redwall publication would be interesting, perhaps an online mag with a forum similar to Terrouge.  First edition: a tribute to Jacques, of course :-)

Actually since Terrouge has been declining in activity, they have already put together what is intended to be their last issue which is a tribute to Brian Jacques. They haven't officially released it though, not sure what's going on.

Here is the PDF of the tribute issue (might want to get a box of tissues first):
http://www.terrouge.com/BrianJacquesTribute.pdf

If you guys signed up on the Terrouge forums and joined in the discussions or started your own, it might inspire the staff to get working on releasing the issue officially. :)

I think I was in year 2 at school, or something. My brother became obsessed with the books after he picked up Loamhedge at the dentist. I decided to read the first book, Redwall, to see what all the fuss was about. Because I was so young, it took me a year to read, but I loved it. I've now read the whole series (actually I haven't, I haven't finished Rouge Crew yet) and read some of them twice and three times. I love them.

I discovered I loved reading in second grade, so that year for Christmas my parents gave me a whole stack of books. One was Mossflower. I decided to read that first because it was the biggest, and I've been hooked ever since. I immediately collected the rest of the books (there were only six others at the time) and I've bought each new one as soon as they came out. I've lost count of the number of times I've read them all. My original copy of Mossflower is so worn out it's now in two halves. I had to buy a new one.

I found out about Redwall because of two reasons. One, my family owns three Redwall books which sit on the shelf for ages. Two, my mom was telling me to try new books, so I picked up that and fell in love right away, its still my most favourite books ever!

I got a copy of Mariel of Redwall for my birthday. In about a week I decided to try it as I had read all the other books that I had gotten for my birthday. I finished it the same day. I think that often times the first book you read in a series becomes your favorite. You can probably guess which book I like the best from my name.

Totally off topic.

It was random. But McDonald's food is always random. Greasy but so yummy. You need to read the fine print on the egg Mcmuffin wrapper.

I was in second grade and the smartest girl in class was reading Redwall.  I checked it out next from the library just to show her I could read a huge book too!  I've been in love with the series ever since, I currently own all but the latest book ( all but 3 in hardcover).  I have a 7 year old niece who I'm very excited about getting her started on them soon and I can't wait to share this experience with my daughter(2 years) in the years to come.

As a young boy I got my dad to make me a wooden sword which i named "Rathdeath".   :)

I was in grade four, and was waaaaay above the reading level of the majority of my classmates. In grade three everyone else was reading Goosebumps, and I was reading Narnia (and understanding it, much to the surprise of my teachers). Anyway by grade four I had finished Narnia and had no clue where to go from there, since this was about a year before I discovered Tamora Pierce. My mum went to the bookshop one day while I was at school and asked the lady what she recommended for a girl my age who had just finished Narnia. Mum picked me up from school with a copy of Mariel in her hand. I never looked back.

You shall teach them well. Redwall good. Rats bad. I'm reading the first book to my little bro. I think he likes it. Hopefully he will read them again when he learns to read.

I first heard of the Redwall series from the back of another book in the same edition. I didn't think they were anything special, though. Then, my mum got a copy of Redwall from the library, and I sneaked a bit, and was won over by the bit where Matthias trips over and lands at the feet of the Abbott, and of course I asked if I could read it.
I finished it the next day. I was a bit scared by the bits where Asmodeus hypnotises animals, but I felt like I had to read the next one.
So I read Mossflower, and then Mattimeo. By the time I'd finished Mattimeo, I was hooked. (It took me that long!)
I am currently reading Mossflower to my little sister.
WOW! That was a post!

My old sister read the first book in elementary school. She liked it but never read the series. A couple years later, when i was in 5th grade, I was at the bookstore trying to find something to read with my dad. He was making me get a book and I hated reading! We went home with Martin the warrior, mossflower, and the long patrol, the covers looked cool. I read the long patrol with him and was hooked! Before we finished it. I went and bought high Rhulain and read all of that. Then eventually read the rest of the series until I was at the point of waiting for the sable quean to come out. Now I love reading and have read every redwall book at least once  ;D

The Redwall series has been in my family for years. I'm not sure whom, but either my mom or my eldest brother brought home Redwall one day from the bookstore. My brother loved the books, and so did my mom. Unfortunately, years passed and my brother climbed out of the world of Redwall, saying that the books were fine for adolescents, but not for a 22 year-old. I guess my mom also stopped reading the books around that time.
Then one day, I need to a book report on any book. Mom instantly suggested Redwall, but I refused, saying that I would only do a horse book (this was in 3rd grade).
So a few years passed, and I found myself searching a new, interesting book for a 5th grade summer book report. Mom handed Redwall to me, and this time I was interested. Upon opening the first page, the door to Redwall opened to me. I happily walked in.

My school had an activity in which everyone had to read a book from the school collection.  At that time I didn't like reading very much until I picked up Martin the Warrior.  I read it, loved it, started searching for more.  Then I found out that I had watched the Redwall TV series when I was younger.

It was by chance actually.  I was bored of all the gritty and what was being dubbed as "realistic" fantasy.  So I was strolling through the book store looking for something a little bit light, wholesome....and lo and behold, Redwall almost jumped out at me....

It was instantaneous.  I picked it up and "knew" this was my series!  And it now has been!  I never finish the entire series due to the fact...I reread the same books sometimes because they are so good! Hehe!

I picked up Salamandastron at my local library and read it. At the time I did not realize it was part of a series. Later I came back looked through that section of books again and realized it was all one series. I started with Martin the Warrior and read through all of them in chronological order.

Back when I was about 7 or 8, I noticed a new show on TV; it was on right when I got home from school, so I could catch about the last half of it.  It was a cartoon, and it had animals, and I liked it.  During episode 4, the one where we meet Warbeak, my dad walked by as Warbeak was going "Killee!" and, thinking it was too violent for someone my age, he forbade me to watch it.

I pretty much forgot about it for the next five years.  During my later part of middle school, I heard about the series, and decided to read it.  I checked out book 1 during the summer before high school.

At that time, I fell ill with Lyme Disease and Ehrlichiosis (like Lyme Disease but rarer, and worse, and I'd gotten them both at the same time).  I spent pretty much the whole summer laying in bed, feeling too sick to do much more than sleep, even though my mind was quite bored when I was awake because I was usually too sick to even watch tv.  During my better times, however, I started the book, and would read a little bit at a time.  The descriptions and everything were so vivid, it gave me a lot to think about for the times I wasn't feeling up to reading.  After I got better, I quickly read all the rest of the books that were out at the time, and fell in love with the series, and that's also when I realized that that was the TV show I'd forgotten about.  Now I'm 19 and still love them.

When I was 5 yrs old, one of the librarians at our local library suggested my mum read Redwall to me. The whole family immediately fell in love with the books. I can remember many nights, curled up on the couch listening to my mum reading Redwall to me. Her mole speech is amazing :) When I was 6 I begged my mother to teach me to read so I could read the rest of the Redwall books myself, because I had decided a few chapters a night was terribly slow. 3 weeks later I was curled up with Lord Brock Tree, and from then on I've been an avid reader of Redwall. I've fallen in love with Mossflower country more and more with each new adventure shared. Brian Jacques was an amazing man. He has given us all an priceless gift by sharing Redwall with us. I was only able to meet Mr. Jacques once, three years ago, but I was struck by his jovial manner and how he truly cared for all of us. I will always remember his promise to keep writing, as long as we keep reading. I'm finishing Reading Rouge crew right now. His last gift to all of us. I know I'll cry harder about this one than I have for any of them. Because this wonderful man has died and this is the last new adventure any of us will share with him, his last gift to us. I miss him greatly, but I'll keep my side of the promise and always keep Redwall close to my heart, and remember with joy the past 11 yrs of new adventures. Our hero is gone, but the effect he has had on our lives will live on as his legacy. Rest in peace, Brian Jacques.

I was an eighth grader and hated reading, saw a book will a mouse holding a sword on it (Redwall). Checked it out. I was a horrible reader so I sat on my porch and read out loud to myself. Fell in love. read it all, i laughed, I cried and I found out that mattimeo was a sequel, in fact there was a whole series. So i decided to try reading them all, checked mattimeo out and got married. read it and a few others and decided i wanted to own my own books. so i bought redwall and had my first kid. now i have about 19 kids. I am proud to say that by the end of my eighth grade year I was reading at a college level. now in college I have been writing stories and the like for my self. Mostly my own redwall fan fiction. And that my friends is a Redwall Love Story.

Redwall was recommended to me by my mother about fifteen years ago after she had started reading the first book.  She works at a school, and will often read literature that she may be able to then recommend to students in the classroom.  The rest is history...I went out to the public library and would check out the books.  Later when I got a part time job, I started buying the books.  I own most of them, but not all of them.  I actually didn't know about the tv series until very recently...I'd say at least three years ago.  I snagged Season 3 with Martin the Warrior off of ebay for a bargain and I feel that was the strongest season of the three because by then the animators, voice actors, and screenwriters kind of knew what they were doing. ;)

It all started in May 2005. I had recently finished "Watership Down" and loved it, so I was open to new book ideas. On a forum I often went to, there was a user named "Triss" who talked about Redwall. I briefly looked it up and saw warrior mice and red walls, looked interesting. Some time later I'm at the bookstore and I tell the person I want something that's like "Watership Down". He motions me over to a shelf lined with Redwall books. I instantly recalled what I saw earlier and dove into it. ...except I had a hard time deciding which book to pick first! I knew I should probably pick the first book, but that otter on "Taggerung" was so enticing... still, I started with the first one. After that I was in a Redwall craze and returned to that bookstore many times, picking up three more books per visit. Eventually did pick up "Taggerung" shortly before the bookstore closed. (later I'd finish off the collection by picking them up from Borders or Amazon).

Right after I finished the first book, I remembered that the warrior mice I saw in a Google image search couldn't have been illustrations. So some cartoon existed. Maybe I knew about the cartoon beforehand, but never really thought about it. So I'm looking and came across redwall.tv. As soon as I saw Martin's face (and spent a few minutes laughing at his great scowling expression), I knew that "Martin the Warrior" would have to be the second book I read. ...which eventually lead to me keeping an eagle eye out for the Season 3 DVD of the cartoon because that "Martin" book was awesome.

Sometime before December 2006, I finally got to see Season 3. And it was worth it. It also did a great service by demonstrating how molespeech sounds when spoken aloud, making me instantly forgive all the hateful things I said about molespeech in the books.
(personally I prefer Season 2 thanks to "Mattimeo"'s stronger storyline and Tim Curry's performance as Slagar, but Season 3 really nailed the ending)

I found a mysterious, olde scripted book on my mom's bookshelf. I was already a person who would read anything possible, so the idea of a book more than a centimeter thick intrigued me. Since then, I won't read ANYTHING unless it is one inch thick or more. :) As soon as I saw the molespeech in the book, I was entranced.

I've never seen the TV series, and I didn't really want to until I read this. Tim Curry as Slagar? That is perfect!

I remember the first time I read Mossflower I had to ask my Dad what the moles were saying. I got used to it, but that first time was very confusing!

It's seem that mole speech was hard for me to understand too. But I don't remember for sure. I joke with my brother about moles and their weird speech. He always laughs about them. And hares. Whenever I talk like a hare, or tell him about how hares talk, he thinks it's funny.

Did any of you ever do Barnes and Nobles' Summer Reading Plan? One year when I did it, I looked at the books, and there was only trash. My Mom had heard many families say that they LOVED Redwall, so when she found it on the reading list, she suggested to me. I was actually very reluctant to read it, but after one chapter, and it was an extremely short chapter too, I was hooked. I've been buying every single one I can get my hands on ever since!

I find out about Redwall five years ago when I was in Year 2 (which I think is equal to 3rd Grade). Me and all of my friends used to watch it all of the time. I remember watching all of Redwall and Mattimeo.
Thousands of years later, I started to read the Harry Potter books because I wasn't aloud to watch the films. After reading them all, I had nothing at all left to read. Then I had a flashback.
I was sitting watching Slagar talking to Malkariss on the TV show. Then the flashback changed. I was in the library, looking in admiration at Eulia! and High Rhulian on the shelves.
The flashback then ended, and I rushed to the library. I went on this very website (before the forum was created) to check the order of the books. It said that Brian recommends reading them in publication order, so I looked for which one was first in publication order. It was Redwall. I checked everywhere for Redwall, but I couldn't find it. I asked the librarian if they had Redwall, but they said they hadn't. She spent an hour checking libraries all over England for Redwall, but it was nowhere.
After our long search, I went home and sat in bed, wishing that Redwall actually existed.
The following day was just as hopeless. I looked in book stores, on eBay, but still no luck. I went to bed again. Whilst in bed, I wondered what to read. Then I had an idea. I decided to read Di-
Then my dad came in.
"Guess what I've got?"
He passed me a book. I looked at the cover, with a rat riding on some horses, with a hay cart of weasels and rats (and stoats but I didn't know what they were then). Above the picture was the word REDWALL. Above Redwall it said BRIAN JACQUES.

And that's how the glorious adventure began.

Heehee. Nice story, Coobreedan. Can't believe you remember it that well...

Well, one day (I think I was in the third grade) my mom, my brothers, and my sister and I went to the library. I was hanging around my mom, holding my books (probably Vampires Don't Wear Polka Dots, or something of that nature) and she withdrew a DVD from the New Arrivals shelf. It looked like this:

I was like "Awwww! It's a widdle mouse!" And my sister was like "Ew. What is that ugly brown thing?"

And, so, we brought it home (I remember it was Winter...) We popped the disc in the player, and watched.

From the second I saw Cluny the Scourge on his hay cart, I thought, "Man, this is gonna be EPIC." We watched it as a family, two episodes a night. (I clearly remember the Asmodeus episode; I went to bed with nightmares of gigantic snakes after my dad chased me up the stairs hissing"Asmodeusssssssssssss..."

So, I love animals, always have, and I think that fueled on my Redwall obsession. I always watched in my pink bathrobe and sandals, so I could be "just like Matthias". I did it while reading my first Redwall book, too.

I borrowed Redwall from a Redwall fan from our church; It took me about a month to finish it, but when I was done, I was disappointed that it was over.

Then I found out it was a series.

My brother had been reading the books and he said they were really good. I thought they wouldn't be so I didn't start reading them. I probably couldn't understand them at the time anyways. So, one day in 5th grade, one our 1st class trip to the library, I couldn't find a book to read. I wandered around until I came to the Redwall section. I looked through the books and checked out Mattimeo. And that was the start of my love for Redwall.

I got into Redwall late in the game compared to many. It wasn't until middle school, 6th or 7th grade I think, that a friend of mine finally convinced me to read them. I have her to thank for who I am today (and not just for getting me to read Redwall).

The funny thing is that I would always avoid that part of my school's library because the Redwall books were so big and intimidating.
But one day, I was looking through my fifth grade teacher's books, in baskets in the back of the room, searching for something to read.  I came upon a book that caught my eye.  It was purple on the edges of the cover, with yellow on the inside, and a mouse with a sword on the front, and the word "Redwall".  There was no blurb and the text was tiny, but I thought I'd give it a try.
That was when I became a Redwall addict.

It happened much like Matthias: one day, I stumbled across the animated movie Redwall (the TV series, but they stuck the episodes and a little short). I loved it so much I watched every time that I fell over. Dust and one day in the library, flipping through the HUGE book of "1001 story he must have read to grow", I fall on Redwall! I look at whether it is in the library: there is!
At first I just wanted to read it and remember the movie that I loved, but now I'm totally a fan!

My family have had the books for years and I've always had them on my to-read list, but never actually got round to reading them. Then one day I got a message on fanfiction.net from a random guy asking if I'd read the Redwall books. That was the beginning of a very long conversation in which we talked about things and I helped name his rabbit, then he gave me the silent treatment for about a month, in which time I decided I should probably read the books. I looked up on google which order to read them in and started on Lord Brocktree. I finished that and gave it to my friend, who wanted to read them. We had two copies of Martin the Warrior and Mossflower but only one copy of The Legend of Luke so it was a race between us to see who'd get to read it first. I won and we all lived happily ever after. (except my friend, who was slightly less happy)

Chronological order, huh?  Mossflower (and especially Redwall) must've come across a bit odd then, huh?  Honestly, I would've recommended order of publication for the first few books, then chronological, but TOO LATE NOW  ;D

Funny enough, Lord Brocktree was my first Redwall book as well.  I happened to find it in my school library when I was in junior high, then went from there.  I was lucky that the library had a lot of the books there so I was just able to read them.

What's different about Mossflower?
Well, if you're coming into it from Lord Brocktree and Martin the Warrior, some of the story parts don't fully line up.  It can be argued that, in Mossflower, Martin would have left out certain parts of his backstory when explaining to his friends where he'd come from.  It's pretty obvious, though, that his backstory was simply retconned later once Mr. Jacques realized he wanted to do more with the character (which is perfectly reasonable).

Salamandastron also doesn't seem as fully fleshed out as in the later books, though this more or less lines up since it's supposed to be early in the overall timeline.  I can't remember if it lines up with the descriptions in Lord Brocktree or not though.  Still, I think it's the only time the echo chamber and the literal stone dragon head are mentioned (definitely could be wrong there, feel free to fact check)

Also, in that one foxes weren't as fully vermin-ified yet as in the later stories, what with Fortunata still trying to pass as a wandering healer to the woodlanders.  There's also the giant swan, and of course the snakey fish, the only sentient "fish" in any of the books as far as I'm aware.
Title: Re: How did you first find out about Redwall?
Post by: shisteer of nothing much on October 26, 2019, 09:26:06 AM
I wasn't terribly confused. Martin not explaining his backstory seemed pretty fair enough to me. Nobody would want to relive the events. I'm not up to Redwall yet so I haven't had to deal with anything there. (I just finished Mariel of Redwall)
It all seems pretty straight forward to me.

I found out about Redwall because one of my sisters and my mother found Mossflower somewhere in the library and shoved it into my pile of books (This was during the time I would return my books and check out 20 more for the next two weeks) and I loved it. The next one I read was Redwall and it made me so mad. xD I didn't bother to read the books in an certain order after that, just grabbed whichever two that looked interesting.

Some of the stories are direct sequels though.

Martin the Warrior > Mossflower > The Legend of Luke
Mariel of Redwall > The Bellmaker
Redwall > Mattimeo > The Pearls of Lutra > The Long Patrol > Marlfox > The Taggerung

But after that they can go in any order I'm pretty sure.

Yeah, no problem. Like Jet said, some of the books are sequels and I would recommend trying to read them in that order, but it didn't really change anything for me when I didn't, except mild confusion and/or joy at reading more of certain characters.

When I was ten and a half, my mom heard about the Redwall series from some of her friends in our homeschooling group, and so she bought Mossflower for me. Before she gave me the book, she asked if I'd read the first one yet. Unfortunately, I had a very distant memory of being sick in bed at the age of five, and reading a book that had the word "Redwall" in the title somewhere. That was all I remembered, so I thought it must have been the first book in the series. (After I'd finished the series, I realised that the book that I thought was the Redwall novel, was actually the Redwall Feast picture book- my bad.)
So my mom gave me Mossflower, and I looked at the cover: there were two mice and a mole on the front, on some sort of journey. I thought it was going to be like Brambly Hedge, and I was thinking "I'm too old for this" but I read it anyway. Boy, was I ever wrong. It was fifty times better than Brambly Hedge. Although there was one thing that bothered me for a while: when Tsarmina asks Fortunata "well did you fix the medicine" and she said "he's taken enough poison to lay half the garrison low" I was all LORD HAVE MERCY, SHE'S GOING TO POISON HER OWN FATHER, and it took me a while to get over that. Luckily Brian was merciful to my ten-year-old brain, which was already trying to process how this whole goodbeasts vs. vermin thing worked, and didn't show the dying scene, because I would have stopped reading it immediately, as I have a phobia of poison.
Aaaanyways, what I was trying to say was that, I wasn't exactly hooked until after I finished the first three books, because I had never read anything with people killing each other, and then being so deadpan about it (most of the time), but I had started to get used to it by the fourth book. Then I went to the library and started reading them all out of order. I now have Redwall, Mossflower, (we used to have Mattimeo, but someone *glares at Hazel* left it outside in the rain, and it sort of peeled apart), Mariel of Redwall, Doomwyte, The Sable Quean, Marlfox, and Martin the Warrior, and I'm working on rereading the whole series.

When I was about, I don't know like somewhere between 4 and 6 or something like that, I watched the Redwall tv show. Just the first season but certain things like Martin speaking to Matthias and Matthias vs Asmodeus, as well as the design for Cluny stuck into my brain. Then towards the end of 6th grade (or 5th grade) I read the graphic novel version of the OG Redwall. I enjoyed it and it flooded into my memory again but then ebbed away again with only certain things like the first time we met Cluny stuck in my head. Then, in December of 2019 I went to the library to get a new book. I had spent the last 2 years or so just reading and re-reading Erin Hunter books, so I decided to find another animal fantasy book. I found Redwall.
I read Redwall and loved it, I thought the story was great, the villains were so interesting, the heroes were noble and enjoyable to follow, the battles were exciting and the search for the armor and sword was intriguing. Keep in mind I had never actually read the OG Redwall I just watched the show and read the graphic novel.
But I loved Redwall. And soon I realised that there were a total of 22 books. I began to buy more. I bought Mossflower in either late 2019 or early 2020 and read that. I kept on buying (not in any particular order) books. December 2019 to May 2020 was spent binging the Redwall series, only stopping once to read the new Warriors books that came out in the spring. I own all 22 books, as well as the graphic novel and an accidental second copy of Eulalia!
That is the story of how I found my (probably) favorite series, with only Warriors rivaling it.
