So, we all know why Brian chose the animals that he did to be part of his books (animals found on the British Isles mostly bar the monitor, beaver and wolverine) but... what if any animals could have starred? What animals would you have liked to see featured in Redwall books that were not used?
I would have loved to see:
raccoons
chipmunks
rattlesnakes
I just think they would be fun!
Skunk
Porcupine!!!
Wild boar
Ok, I can see a wild boar being an AWESOME villain! I can picture him in my mind dressed in warlord gear. That would be so great!
Skunk, raccoon, porcupine. James Gryphon said he was going to write something Redwall-like with new animals. View it here. (http://redwallabbey.com/forum/index.php?topic=759.0)
Skunks would've brought biological warfare to the series. ;D
Going to be totally random here:
A PANDA!
Or a guinea pig, a mountain lion, a humming bird, or a panda.
How about a mongoose?
It would be either a new addition to the good rosters, or a heroic, skilled vermin; like Gulo, but much brighter. Ideally they would be recognized as known adder-killers.
It even almost fits, if we're counting Commonwealth countries, since there are some species in India.
Mongooses would be perfect! Also, perhaps a groundhog, a woodchuck, a possum or a prairie dog.

Redwall + Skunks= Funny battles ;D
TIGERS AND LEOPARDS!!!!! ;D ;D ;D
Plus a few hermit crabs in there would have been interesting. ::)
A chameleon.
They would be even better at stealth than
(http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x66/RedwallRocks/CamoflaugeExpert.jpg)
Komodo dragons (thanks nightfire!) actual wolves, coyotes, bears (Gooo Akitka!), bald eagles, vultures, geese, more bats, and... PLATYPUSESESES!
My goodness, I forgot to mention that Komodo Dragons would be epic in Redwall! Thak's for reminding me, Muse!!
Skunks would be such a funny addition! Are there skunks in the UK? As I recall there was at least one goose in the series, can't remember which book he was in though...
I do think the mongoose idea is brilliant. They would make amazingly skilled fighters. I totally see the mongoose as a goodbeast character though maybe that's because of Rikky-tikky :D
I totally see Mongeese? as improved ferrets or weasels.
Platypuseses!
Platypuses...Playpi...Platypeople? Well, you know what I mean. ;D
Exactly! how do you say it? Still, I like.....
PLATYPUSESESES!
1 chipmunk
2 skunk
3 groundhog
4 bobcat
5 flying squirrels
6 gerbals
7raccoon
8 woodpecker
9 mongoose
10 dogs
i think thats it my fav ones that i would realy like to see are 2 3 4 5 and 7
They mentioned a dog in the first Redwall book. ;)
I also think a honey badger would be cool!
@BrookSkimmer, the goose appeared in High Rhulain. Brontalis the goose, if I rember correctly. He was always arguing with Pandion.

It's funny, I have a notebook of characters I made a while ago and one of them is a mongoose, I also have a wild boar as the warlord. He was awesome 8)
I also think a bunch of whales should destroy a bunch of boats... Just saying...
Possums and chipmunks.
Oh, by the way, speaking of beasties. I found out that a weasel is livng in our barn. I named him Ferahgo. ;D
And I would have loved to see actual wolves in Redwall, not just the dead skin of one and a mention in Taggerung.

Wolves seem to be a popular choice with fans, but I seriousy think they would not work. I'm happy for them only to be mentioned.
First of all, would they be good or bad? Wolves are a noble, intelligent breed and they live by a strict code. Vermin don't live by any code, and wolves are almost too smart to be bad, but then they are also fierce predators and quite savage at times (although not to the same extent that some make them out to be). Also, in folklore and in stories, they are portrayed as sly and evil. Maybe they could be grey characters, but I don't think Brian would have introduced them so they could be grey.
Size would also be difficult, wolves are HUGE compared to the other animals in Redwall. Even scaling them down to the size of a badger wouldn't be right, they would have to be at least half the size of a badger again. And when badgers tower over the other animals, imagine the size difference when wolves are compared to the other animals!
Finally, wolves are pack animals and live in groups. For wolves to work in Redwall, they would need to walk in packs, and can you imagine 10 huge wolves, bigger then badgers, all moving with each other?
Wolves also don't live in the UK (they used to, though), and Brian prefered UK animals in his stories.
For more reasons, see "Superstripe the Unrealistic" on Project S.L.A.G.A.R. One of the chapters had wolves in them, and it explains why they wouldn't work.

actualy wolverines are a litgtle bigger than wolves so it has basicly been done the size any way
Actually, wolverines are, on average, 12-18 inches (30-45cm) in height to the shoulder, about the size of a medium dog, while grey wolves are, on average, 32-34 inches (80-85cm) to the shoulder, so wolves are actually quite a bit bigger then wolverines.
Yes! Platypuses! ;D

;DPlatypuseses would be evil! They are venomous. I understand if you cant see an evil platypus but trust me. They are.
One Word
MONKIEEEEEEEES!
ok this is what i think
i would add racoons as good and bad guys
mongeese would own!
a wildhog would be a mercenary like bane in mossflower but really short-tempered
chipmunks would be cool
ooo imagine a giant otter in the series! like the ones in south america i belive
i think stuff other than that would ruin the series
lots of more wolverines

Who knows?
Redwall was the first novel and he was just figuring out the series at that time. Maybe he meant to make that reference to humans. As it was the first novel, there are many differences from it to the rest of the series, but that's a whole different topic than what this topic is meant for.
^
I'm sure that wasn't a reference to humans. Redwall has none.
1.Bald eagle!
2.Fusa
3.Bison
4.bush baby
5.flying squirrel
6. bear
7.WILD BOAR!!!!!!!!!!!!
1. Cobras
2. ...
im sure lots of animals we dont know about exist in the redwall world since mossflower only covers britain i belive
^
It's actually never said what part of the world it is in. I think it is Earth, but if there were no humans around. The animals are British, but there are a few non-British animals (such as wolverines).
yes but gulo only came there because he was chasing his brother
I definitely think a Fossa would awesome to have, I would also like to see more birds, a boar would be cool I have to agree... Also, maybe like, a duck? Yeeesh. A duck! ;D ;D
I personally always thought that Redwall was Other Earth. In other words, what Earth would have been like if Humans were never created.
I would have liked to see mongooses and cobras in the world of Redwall. Can you imagine that kind of epic battle?
I agree with a previous sentiment, a porcupine would have been cool. Maybe it would be like a massive, warlike hedgehog.
Yeah, I think so. But hedgehogs are prickly enough, and a procupine's quils are four times the length of a hedgehog's spines. Can you imagine that?
Yes - it fights using broken off quills like spears.
Chipmunks! A few should pop up in the series just like Mokug the hamster. :) They should be nervous, and talkveryfast, so that they runalltheirwordstogetherlikethis.
I don't see how that could be, because chipmunks come from America, but it would be cute. :)
Chipmunks would be interesting...very brave, very loud when agitated. That would've been interesting to see an animal in Redwall going on and on about something, noisily. The Abbot/Abbess would've thrown them out. :P
I just got a weird picture of Alvin and the chipmunks when people wanted them in Redwall.
As for what animal I want, I would say maybe wolves and probably chipmunks also.
Capabaras! And maybe caimans...
Skunks would be really funny.
My idea of what a skunk-Redwall battle might be like:
Skunk: If you don't give us Redwall we'll spray you!
Redwallers: Never! Redwaaaaaal! *shoots bows and arrows and slingstones*
Skunks: SPRAY!!! *spray everyone with stinky spray*
Redwallers: YUCK! Everybeast, get inside! We'll wait them out!
Skunks: ...
Coyotes? Maybe
What about raccoons
I wouldn't want to change it. I love the way the books are already written. :D

Opposum: (wakes up) I'm alive!
Rat Warlord: Get him!
Opposum: Eep! Musn't play dead! *runs away*
I can kind of picture opossums in the Redwall series. I picture them as the vermin.
Yeah, and use their tails as whips:
Evil Opposum: Put yer packs into it!
Rat: But sir! We're tired!
Opposum: *lashes out with his tail* Wot was that?
Rat: *cries out* Nothing Cap'n! Nothing!

I would love to see some Australian animals such as wallabies, kangaroos, sugar gliders and possums.
Marsupials would kinda fit into Redwall imho. While I think Redwall was perfect as it is/was- wombats would be fun. A Tasmanian Devil would make a cool villain and/or Dragon.
But I like Tassie Devils!
MONGOOSE!
