Title: The Ribbajack
Post by: Matthias720 on July 26, 2011, 03:08:11 PM
I'm ashamed to say that I haven't read this one yet. Who here has read it, and is it good?

It's really good, but it's creepy. Scary, even. I think Mr. Jacques wrote it on Halloween, or something!

BJ wrote something scary? :o I must have this, must have this, must have this...! How is it scary? Is it like thriller scary or horror scary?

I've read a bit, it really is pretty scary. I didn't finish it though, it used big words that at the time I had no idea what they meant! I'll read it again though, sometime...

It's scary. If you want the details, read it yourself. It's kinda of both thriller and horror combined, I guess. It's actually a collection of short stories written by Mr. Jacques. I really liked it, but I had nightmares after reading about the Ribbajack itself.  :o It's really quite a shocker. I think you'd like it. He also wrote another book along the same lines, called "Seven Strange and Ghostly Tales." It wasn't nearly as scary though. And I finished it in an hour.

What a talented man, being able to write such charming kids' books and something truly scary as well. I must have this book now. Must. Have. It.
But since I've never actually read it, I'll leave the thread now. ;D

Great stuff, the Ribbajack. It also contains a few other goodies about various topics. Some are amusing and one is about an animal hero. Read Miggy Mags and The Malabar Sailor. Justice is served at the paws of a brave critter. Enjoy.

The Ribbajack itself is weird.  ::) Not that scary. The evil little boy that commands it is more fearsome!

I tend to agree, the stories themselves aren't really scary.  I think it's meant more to be a story that could be scary if you stop and think about it for a while, and think about all the ways it could have turn out, or how something like that could affect you.

When it comes right down to it, I'm not sure Mr. Jacques could have written a truly scary story even if he had wanted to.   Not a bad thing, in my opinion, since one's writing reflects his character and personality.

I'm only about halfway through right now, but I really like The All-Ireland Champion vs. the Nye Add.  I liked the accent in which he wrote it, the way he tells it in a rambling, almost aimless manner, and the little bit at the end about Mickey Hennessy.

The mongoose in "Malabar Sailor" is awesome.

I wish he'd had time to put a mongoose in a Redwall story. I'd imagine the villain'd be a snake, naturally.
Title: Re: The Ribbajack
Post by: Bragoon on January 26, 2012, 02:23:49 AM
I would guess a mongoose would be a vermin, though, since it's a lot like a weasel or a ferret.

I don't think a mongoose would have been a vermin. The Medusa story wwas weird. But I loved the All-Ireland Champion vs. The Nye Add, because of how funny it was. And I LOVED the Malabar Sailor one.

i'm thinking about getting it from the library and i looked it up the cover was creepy so what is it about?
Title: Re: The Ribbajack
Post by: Bragoon on March 03, 2012, 05:39:04 PM
It's a compilation of stories.  It has one ghost story, and the rest are more like fables (stories that are meant to teach a lesson).  The cover is of one of the fables, The Ribbajack, which isn't all that scary.

It is creepy scary. Also humorous scary. Kinda makes you wonder if everything you perceive through the senses is all there is??? I'm sure you will be reminded of strange events in your life when you read these tales.

Well! I've finally cracked the cover on my copy of this book and read through The Ribbajack - just the one story so far. I would like only to say how much I approve of the chaplain's methods for dealing with problem children... XD Or just Rev. Miller in general. I shall be his loyal fan for life.

I thought the story itself was a great idea. The whole thought of one's hatred consuming one isn't new, but this particular illustration was. Fabulous short story, ought to be part of school curriculum, says I.

I love this book and I don't think it is scary @ all!!! It had a great moral and was humorous. Some of them were kinda weird though:
{SPOILER (I don't know how to hide it sorry....)
the medusa and the bully was just weird........... so was the ghost girl one.}

The Ribbajack was awesome, someday you tell your kids:
If you are to mean to your sister, the ribbajack is gonna get you.....JK :D

All of the short stories in the Ribbajack have an underlying moral lesson. :)

Romsca, does your library have a transfer system -- for example, can different libraries in your area trade books? That's how I got a hold of some of the audiobooks from my local small town library a while back. :D

I just recently read this. Well-written, but spooky! In fact, I would call A Smile and A Wave downright creepy. (Yes, I am an absolute wimp when it comes to stories, movies, etc. that are even a little scary. But these were a fun, good kind of scary.)

You found something!!!
