The title of this chapter is a play on and obvious homage to the 2000 wuxia film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (dir. Ang Lee and starring Michelle Yeoh, Zhang Ziyi, Chow Yun-fat, and Chang Chen). The title itself is based on a Chinese idiom ("暗石疑藏虎，盤根似臥龍", which means "behind the rock in the dark probably hides a tiger, and the coiling giant root resembles a crouching dragon.") which describes a place or situation full of unnoticed masters. Put simply, the meaning of the idiom is to never underestimate anybody.
The dialects that Jared and Madeline Sandeye speak to each other are both real-world Tagalog and Ilokano. Tagalog is an Austronesian language traditionally spoken as the first language of the ethnic Pinoy, or the Filipino people. Ilokano is likewise Austronesian, and spoken primarily as a lingua franca ("common language") by the Igorot people as well as by the native settlers by the Cagayan Valley. This is done intentionally to further solidify the Sandeyes' status as foreigners to Mossflower Woods, as well as to imply that their parents are likely natives of two different regions of the Eastern Islands, as they speak two different dialects. For reading convenience, the foreign words have been marked in italics.
"bunso - A Tagalog honorific of endearment to address the youngest sibling of the family.
"kuya - A Tagolog honorific of endearment to address the older brother.
"manong" - An Ilokano term given to the first-born male in a nuclear family. In this context, Jared is the eldest sibling to Madeline (since the first-born sibling, Edoran Sandeye, is deceased, having been murdered by Deathblade's vermin prior to the events of the fanfiction).
"Naku'po" - A Tagalog exclamation of shock and surprise, similar to saying "Oh, no!" or "Yikes!" in English.
"Hay nako!" - Another Tagalog exclamation, typically meaning "Oh, my goodness!", or to express a sigh.

Jared Sandeye explains to Larina Skyleaf that the Akret Branch has a fifth style named "Hayisōkū". This is in reference to Yoshukai Karate, a separate style from Chito-ryu. The three kanji, or Japanese symbols, that make of Yoshukai translate to "Training Hall of Continued Improvement" (called "the School of the Ever-Evolving" in-universe). The standardized English translation is "Striving for Excellence" (called "the Ascension to Brilliance" in-universe). The other four styles of the Akret Branch (based on Karate–dō, meaning "Way of the Empty Hand" in Japanese) are Kōnōtash (Shotokan), Hoskinyuk (Kyokushin), Gōryjūn (Gōjū-ryū), and Rtuyoshi (Shito-ryu).
Tipuka's "Ganguen Huk" techniques are references to actual moves and styles in the real-world Hung Ga Kuen style. Their names have been changed to fit within Redwall's worldbuilding.

"Plum Blossom Fist" is a preliminary form of Hung Ga. The in-universe technical name is "Miszukhean", referencing the real-world name for the form, Meihuaquan.
The "Twelve Bridging Paws" are directly inspired by the Twelve Bridge Hands of Hung Ga, and are somewhat identical copies of the techniques.
"The legendary Ganguen Huk master Zackary Reones Bayot" is a reference to famed Chinese martial artist Wong Fei-hung. It was said that the Fire Arrow Punch (faw gin choy) and the shadowless kick were among his favorite and most famous techniques.
The "Bayot Family Style" is based on the "Lau Family Fist". This is a fist set originally from the "Mok Gar" style, and it was incorporated into the Hung Ga Kuen system by grandmaster Lam Cho.
The Githinsteel rings that Tipuka wears on his wrists for the fight are based on iron rings that Hung Ga Kuen practitioners wear during training and combat to increase their strength and endurance, as well as to provide defense.
There are more Hung Ga Kuen techniques beyond what Tipuka showed and used against Jared in their exhibition match. However, the combatants were limited by the two minute timeframe of their fight.

Antonius' Halichit (Tai Chi) sword is called a "Naijiat". It is based on the real-world Chinese double-edged sword Jian. In his ambush by Nagrig Deathblade, Antonius uses the "32 Sword Form", or Yang Taiji Jian.
"Wolverine Holds Head" - Tiger Holding Head

Matutinao River is a river located in Badian, Cebu Island, Philippines, and is considered to be the cleanest river in the country. Since Halichit is said to have originated in the Eastern Island of Eseltharis, it is safe to assume that the island is based on the real-world Filipino province of Cebu.
"4 Tails can Move a Thousand Pounds" is based on the Tai Chi phrase "4 ounces can move a thousand pounds", which refers to a very skillful deflection.
Nagrig Deathblade's technique used to disarm and incapacitate Antonius is based on the Snake form of Shaolin Kempo Karate.

In Japanese martial arts, a kiai is a short shout uttered when performing an attack. It can also be used to startle or intimidate one's opponent, as well as to express confidence or victory.

The thirteen ravens nesting in the trees is a reference to the traditional children's nursery rhyme titled "One for Sorrow" about magpies. According to old superstitions, depending on the number of ravens appearing, they could mean omens of good or bad luck.

A "bahay na bato" ("house of stone") is a type of building originating during the Spanish colonial period. Known for its use of masonry in its construction, it is an updated version of the "bahay kubo" ("country house"), a type of stilt house indigenous to the Philippines.
At one point in the chapter, Jared gifts Larina a leek like one would gift their love interest a bouquet of flowers. In ancient times it was believed that leeks had special powers to cure colds, relieve the pains of childbirth, ward off evil spirits, and protect against wounds. In particular, one legend holds that if a woman slept with a leek under her pillow, she would dream of the face of her future husband.

The martial arts style Jared Sandeye uses when he snaps into his Bloodwrath-esque rage is called Arnis, also known as Kali and Eskrima. Arnis is the national martial art of the Philippines, interchangeable in referring to traditional Filipino Martial Arts (FMA), which itself emphasizes weapon-based fighting with sticks, knives, bladed weapons, and various improvised weapons, as well as unarmed "open-hand" techniques. It is one of the deadliest martial arts styles ever created. Jared even uses the 12 Striking Techniques against an evil vermin fox named Ember.

"Gidorr Adzi de Eolin", the in-universe progenitor of the Sandeye bloodline whom Nagrig Deathblade mentions, is based directly on the real-world historical figure Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar (circa 1043-1099), a Castilian medieval knight and ruler in medieval Spain. He fought with both Christian and Muslim armies during his lifetime, and earned the Arabic honorific as-Sayyid, meaning "the Lord" or "the Master", which would later evolve into the title El Cid, and the Spanish honorific El Campeador ("the Master of the Battlefield").

Faolis Starwalker, the Sandeye's ancestor on their mother's side, takes her name from a non-Redwall Roleplay on the Redwall's Legacy forum, taking place in a fantastical universe with fantastical lands. I wrote this RP with a fellow user named Serena Rosebud. Faolis Starwalker was the mother of my character, also named Jared Sandeye. Unlike my fanfiction, Faolis did not found an order of knights in the Eastern Islands; instead, she was an heir to the throne in the Elven lands. Her sister, Katheen Mrae'Elen Starwalker, was Roleplayed by Rosebud.

The fanfiction reveals that Morringtat colonized the Eastern Islands three centuries ago, around the same time as Razzid Wearat attacked Salamandastron and Redwall Abbey in The Rogue Crew. This is based on Spain's colonization of the Philippines, from the 14th-century up to the 19th (1500-1800). The original colonizer of the Eastern Islands, one Dathremac Karthor Nallegam--ancestor of Nagrig Deathblade and Zakrul Bloodeyes--takes his surname from real-world Portugese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, turned backwards. Magellan discovered the Philippines in 1521, the land upon which the Eastern Islands is heavily culturally based.

Queen's Pawn to Pawn 5 [Black to C5]: The Sicilian Defense, the most popular response to White's King's Pawn to E4.
En passant: French for "in passing", a special chess rule that allows a Pawn to capture an opposing Pawn that has just moved two squares.
Discovered check: a tactic that occurs when one piece moves out of the way to reveal a check from another piece of the opposing King.
Absolute pin: a tactical maneuver that occurs when a piece is pinned against the King. The pinned piece cannot move without putting the King in check.
Building up to the checkmate, Jared forces Jacob into a Zugzwang. This is a situation found in chess wherein one player is put at a disadvantage because of their obligation to make a move. A player is said to be "in zugzwang" when any legal move will worsen their position.
Jared's final checkmate is a variation on the Box Mate, a Rook & King combo vs. a lone opposing King. This is a basic checkmate that involves the technique of reducing the size of a "box". The concept is to use the Rook & King to drive the opposing King to one of the four corners of the board. Once the two Kings are directly opposite each other, only then does the Rook make the final checkmate. Jared makes a variation on this by also utilizing a Pawn to keep Jacob's King further on the retreat.

Zugzwang (German meaning "compulsion to move") refers to a situation in chess in which a player is placed at a disadvantage and forced to make a move, even though any legal move will worsen their position. As passing is not allowed in chess, the player must move, and each move will continually make their position more inescapable: a loss of material, a setup for a checkmate, or a weaker endgame stance. This most often occurs in endgames, where fewer pieces limit a player's options. A zugzwang differs from a stalemate in that in the latter case, a player has no legal moves but they are not in check, resulting in a draw; and in the former, the player must move, but all moves will make things worse. Zugzwang is often seen in puzzles or master-level play, especially in endgames, where precise timing and tempo are required. In some rare cases, a zugzwang can even be engineered intentionally to win or force a draw.

Pumuska is an amalgamation of real cities in the Philippines, specifically Bacolod City in Negros Occidental, and the capital city of Manila in Luzon. The Pumuska Public Plaza, for example, is a direct imitation of the Bacolod Public Plaza. In addition, the places that Madeline mentions in the art in the hotel's elevator are real locations:
"Torub Beach" - Burot Beach, located in the Municipality of Calatagan in the province of Batangas, about 130 kilometers from Manila.
"Lakubmam Resort" - Mambukal Mountain Resort, a resort township located with the boundaries of the municipality of Murcia, Negros Occidental.
"Pumuska Sports Stadium" - Philippines Sports Stadium, found in Bocaue, Bulacan, the largest of its kind in the country with a seating of 25,000. It is a football and track stadium and is part of the larger Ciudad de Victoria complex, which also contains the Philippine Arena, the world's largest indoor arena.

The tinikling dance is a Philippine folk dance that originated prior to Spanish colonialism. It involves at least two people beating, tapping, and sliding bamboo poles on the ground and against each other in coordination, with one or more dancers who step over and in between the poles in a dance. It is traditionally danced to rondalla music, or a serenade played by an ensemble of stringed instruments which originated in Spain during the Middle Ages. Locomotor movements used in this dance are hopping, jumping, and turning.

Katt Monroe (of Star Fox franchise and Star Foxless fanfiction fame by the author Adrastos) uses Leopard Kung Fu as her Wungkan style. Martin Greeneyes (from Martin Greeneyes and Sons of Kotir by Adrastos) uses a style based on Speed Boxing. Gonff uses Capoeira; while Felldoh uses Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).
Nagrig Deathblade uses Snake Kung Fu, while his brother, Zakrul Bloodeyes, uses Shorinji. Gurutharc, who was previously a lieutenant of Nagrig's armies in Their True Names uses Close-Quarters Combat. Adhuxnuo uses Choy Li Fut, and Dragel uses Aikido.
Katt Monroe is not a "Redwall"-ified version of the character, unlike Sal-Gheel Calidaseer (the protagonist of my fanfictions based on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim). This version of Katt comes straight from the Lylat System (i.e., the universe of the Star Fox games) and the Star Foxless fanfiction.
