It's really cool how there are so many different kinds of accents in the Redwall books. It's so much fun to read aloud. What do you like about them?
Well, unless you've watched the TV series, or listened to an audiobook, you don't see any noticeable difference in the writing itself, save for the molespeech. I've heard an audiobook or two from Redwall, and yes, the accents are cool...moles namely because it still hard as ever to understand them. :P
I like the otters way of talking the best with all the nautical terms
Hares all the way! So fancy and posh, haha. ;D Molespeech is fun, too, though, that's for sure.
An' wot about the Northlanderz; eh, laddie?
Moles accents are always funny!
Hares accents are positively top hole, eh, wot!
I like the hare form of speech (there's just something about "bally" and "wot wot"), but for the rest I don't really mind. I used to hate molespeech as I couldn't think of any way for it to sound natural, but then I heard Grumm in Season 3 of the TV show and all that changed in an instant. Molespeech is quite endearing when given a rustic flavor. For anyone who doesn't understand molespeech nor likes it, you should give Grumm a listen. Similarly I don't care much for the Scottish accent as written in books (to this day I'm not entirely sure how "ken" means "know"), but I might change my mind if I heard it spoken.
4 best: Hares, Moles, Otters and Sparrows! "Killee mouseworm!"
I enjoy all the different accents of the different species and even the differences between Salamandastron hares and hares from the north.
In some book a Redwall accent is mentioned. Does any one have an idea as to what that would sound like? My favorite accents are the Northern accent and the hare's accent. I also love the searats accent. They sound like nasty otters.
I bet the Redwall accents are English accents, and then the rest of the people just sound different. :)
I like the Hares the most, they're the funniest, eh? Wot wot! ;D
I'd never really thought about what the Redwallers' accent sounds like, but I did wonder, especially when so many other creatures have mentioned it. I don't suppose real monks or abbey dwellers had an accent of sorts, perhaps?
I always thought Redwallers spoke in the received pronunciation accent, or Oxford English, as it's mostly considered the "standard" English accent.
Hare are so amazing! I love the highland accents in Rakkety Tam! That made the book so much more funny!
I always loved Rakkety Tam's way of speaking. The moles are awesome too, though! ;D
Hares crack me up. (Absoballylutely, wot wot?) ;D
Wow, so many people like the hares' accent. I can't stand it. It's kind of geeky--with the "wot wot". Sorry for the offenses...I just think it's silly. The ones that I do like are the hedgehogs, and the mice. The moles are really cool too, but I wish that I could speak it better. hahaha. The badgers have, I imagine, very strong voices. And I always picture Martin as having a soothing voice. It's a lot of fun.
That's the point. The hares are supposed to be geeky. But we're all entitled to our own opinion. I like the otters. They've got the whole pirate thing going on.
Wha-- guh-- geeky?! Blasphemy, sir! The hares are the utter definition of suave and fabulous and... yes! ;D
I never thought of the hares as geeky, just... posh? Suave and fabulous will do too. ;)
I think my favourite would have to be the northland accent. Maybe that's why I like Rakkety Tam so much, it's full of northerners!
Yep. Highland accents RULE!!!!!! ;D
Welsh accents especially - not that I can tell the difference - it's fun for me to pretend Bosie is from Wales.
Prince of Wales. LOL. Or laird.
I love the Welsh accent! I think it's quite different from the highland accent, though.
I'm listening to the Rakkety Tam audio book at the moment (it's taking me a while...) and Brooky sounds like she's from Yorkshire somewhere! Do all of the otters sound like that? I love it.
Oill' do some diggin' oiver 'ere, hurr.
Highlander's accents and mole's accents, plus Rakkety Tam's accent. He's the only one that spoke like that though. I also LOOOVE the otter's way of speaking.
The sparrows are awesome too:
Killee! Warbeak killee um mouseworm!
My dad talked to me in Sparra for a while after we saw that episode of the show...
Ho urr.
Burr oi, Noightfoire, you'm got yurr molespeech doawn. ;D
Naet really. Ho urr be abowt all I kin spake properly.
Well, congratylations, Noightfoire, Oi carn't speak ANY of it roight! :-[
hrrr..
Hurr, oi spoike loik dis since oi wa' but a little 'un.
You can tell by me bally name which accent I prefer, wot! :)
Wot Wot: Burr aye, maister Wot Wot, it bee's exceedin'ly h'obvious, hurr. Oi approve h'of et! ;D
Lily: lovethataudiobook lovethataudiobook. X3 You are doubly awesome for lovin' Welsh accents! I can't tell the difference between the English accents unless it's really obvious - like a downtown London slang up against a posh hare-like accent. But I think Brooky's voice actress sounds similar in a lot of her parts - perhaps she's from Yorkshire? o_O
Everybody: I say, you villains, this flippin' thread needs more hare accentage, wot?
@Osu: My family is from Wales several generations back, which might be why I like the accent. Accents in general fascinate me, really. Even here in Japan I like to compare accents from different regions.
I did some research on Brooky's voice actress! Nice idea, there. She's apparently from Liverpool, but her accent repertoire includes R.P, General Irish, Scottish, Lancashire, Yorkshire, West Country, General American and Australian! Impressive.
I really like the hares' accent, but I like the way the otters speak.
Hares aren't geeky! Everyone is just jealous. They go around, wot wotting, and flip flipping. Not everyone can pull that off.
Osu: I say! Us hare fans gotta stick together, wot!
Absoballylutely, wot wot?
No, I never thought of hares as geeky. I love the way they can pretend like everything is fun and games well they are in a life or death fight.
Yeah, even at the worst times they have something positive or funny to say
Lily: Really! That's cool, I have an uncle that immigrated from Wales. Whenever they come back from visiting he has the most adorable accent ever, I love it. And Welsh sounds beautiful.
That is an impressive number of accentage from one woman. Neat. :D
Musician: Indeed, sah! 'Tis teamwork that keeps us together, wot?
I must say, chaps and chappesses, I concur on all of the above points on hares, wot wot. Truly the noblest of noble species, eh wot?
Harharr! Yore on my quarterdeck now, mateys!
Pish, tush, an' all that, eh, wot!
Molerspeek be roight hard, burr aye!
I love the way bats.. bats...hares... hares... otters...otters... and highlander creatures talk... talk... :) they are my faves.. faves!
I must say I find the bats to be right charming while in th'midst of a jolly chinwag, old fruit. Couldn't agree more, wot!
Indeed, the batz are braw, alright...alright.
Bats are interesting. Moles are funny.
But I think the most interesting of all the accents is HiaG's accent. A mix of lizard and highlander. Very interesting.
I like HIAG's accent but it doesn't occur in any of the books.
Twid either make the one'z tha' twaz in more intereztin', or get them demoted from everyone'z top-ten liztz.
I must say my favorite accent is that of the Sparrows. When I first read about them in Redwall I fell in love with them. To this day the sparrows are my favorite characters, aside from Gonff.
Yeah, I love the sparrows accent
Killee! Killee! Warbeak killeet!
In the tv series, I really like Kilconey's accent. It's pretty cool.
Heehee. He sounds American in the show...

I've always wondered - what DO Americans sound like to... well, non-Americans? ???
The hares in the show disappointed me juuuust a tiny bit because their accents weren't as strong or silly as I like. Alas! I shall stand by them anyway, for they are hares.
Do the way searats and corsairs typically speak count as an accent?

Huzzah! I agree wholeheartedly, sah! So the other guy can go boil 'is blinkin' head ;)
Ah'd love tae hear a Highlander Badger Lord! He'd have a voice like a summer thunderstorm in the mountains.

Americans sound... American! I don't know how else to put it. I find some of my friends from The States tend to drawl their words together, which makes it hard to understand them in a noisy room. Then again, a lot of Australians do that too...
I wonder if some people think I have an accent... ??? :D
Australians definitely have a distinct accent, but not the stereotypical type like "G'day mate! Put a shrimp on the barbie!" or whatever.
Anyway, back on topic, I love the Borderers and highlanders, but moles and hares have the best accent, IMO, and they're also the funnest to imitate!

Actually, I disagree. Think about it. Hares are very distinguishable, and think of the birds, or the Highlanders, and even the otters have a pretty distinguishable accent. Whatever. I like the dibbuns' accent the best :D
Somehow, the hares' accents--between slight and obvious--just are really awesome to me.
And then there's the moles' accents and Highlanders' accents, which are both awesome also.
I never cared for smaller bird speech (I.e. sparrows). I agree it does fit their language, but just...I don't know, sometimes it gets difficult figuring out what they are saying.
A alus 'ad a thin' for the otters, mate. (Really bad I know :P) As for american ascents It depends (I am from the stats) It is such a big country that depending on which state you come from you have a different accent.
All of the accents are based on places around Britain. Moles are definitely Bristolian. A term they use is "gurt" look up that word and it proves it's Bristolian. Hedgehogs are West Country, vermin are northern and londonian, hares 19th century stereotypical British, mice old fashioned English and squirrels modern English.
