I've wondered about this a bit. ;) Have your forays into the Redwall world ever ended in a trip to dictionary.com? I recall looking up "sacophant" and "sabertache" in the past... just off the top of my head. Anybody else?
Yeah, I learned a lot of new words. I couldn't even begin to tell you all of them! I also began to like the general descriptive style of writing, so I began to subconciously incorporate that style of writing into my own book. Then when I actually realized that, then I realized that Mr. Jacques had been kind of a role-model for me and my writing.
Certainly. Despite always having an above-average vocabulary, I still found it amazing what I was able to learn just be reading a good story.
There are a lot o' thingz that Redwall can teach ye.
It taught me a few words, but "vittles" was the big one. Then I was talking to other people and they were surprised I had never heard of vittles or victuals before. Maybe I'm just not familiar with old-time words.
I learned tons of words, too many to list. I remember one of them was "rapier"
I learned so many different words for food- scoff, tuck, vittles
I just LOOOOVE old fashioned words!
I learned 'melee, 'maelstrom', and lots of other words. It is awesome. ;D
@Lady Amber: I like your profile picture.
i have had to go to a dictionary a few times, other times i found out what it was by looking at the context, but yes redwall has taught me some new words
I learnt "crestfallen" from Redwall. When I was younger, that is... Also, various words for food ("vittles", "scoff" etc) and different types of weapons.
When I read about damson wine in Martin the Warrior, that prompted me to Google "damson". Now I know what a damson is. ;D

Thanks! It's supposed to be a picture of Nightfire, which is my latest RP-ing identity. She's a black squirrel, and is a Mercenary Squirrelqueen from the North.
It taught me some words. Usually I don't look them up, I just learn them by context. When I was writing I used the word draught without thinking. My sister didn't recognize the word so I had to look it up. It's the U.K. spelling of draft, so I know I've learned some U. K. words and am now incorporating them in my writing.
My new favourite word from redwall is:
Ab-so-flippin'-loot-ly!!!
Definitely! I started reading Redwall quite young, so it had a huge part in developing my vocabulary. I still bring out the dictionary occasionally to remind myself what a certain word means. I couldn't tell you exactly which words I learnt from Redwall, but it was certainly quite a few.
I didn't know what the heck a stoat was, or a pine marten, or a polecat. I think Redwall really improved my vocabulary.
I learned many words. Some I knew what they were, but I didn't know how to use them in a sentence. I learned many words for food, and many different types of food.
Yeah, almost all of the foods in Redwall were new to me before I started reading them
O.K., damson, habit, scoff, tucker, vittles, etc. Mostly words having to do with food.
Lots of weapons, like rapiers and pikes and stuff. I'm learning heaps from the Rogue Crew, because of the fortunate freepaws! They like big words!
'Leveret', and 'vulpine'.
Also, I think I learned the meaning of 'scoff'. It wasn't very hard to guess, though. ;D
Yesterday, I came across "cynical", "sibilant", and"paraphernalia". I was too lazy to find a dictionary, so I asked my dad.

I used to do that, too. XD Dads know just about everything, don't they?
Vittles is a good one - now all y'all mentioned it, that was a new one for me. And victuals. And "score," as in counting - for the longest time I couldn't figure out what the characters meant when they said something like, "there's five score vermin out there!" ;D

Yeah, for a while I couldn't figure out what a score was
What is a score, anyways?
A score = 20.
O.K. thanks!!!
"Halcyon" as in "it was a halcyon day" was in Taggerung. It means calm and peaceful. You pronounce it hal-SEE-uhn.
I love the terms used by the Long Patrol. "bit of nip n' tuck" is one of my favorites.
Also learned what a claymore was...
Whay is a claymore?
Oh, sorry Skalrag....a claymore is a type of sword. Used by some in the Long Patrol
Naw, it's O.K.
redwall 'as taught me a whole lot o' new word, wot wot
Vittles, gotta love the word
I learned a whole vocabulary! And I LOVE IT!
I had never heard of "vittles" before I started reading Redwall, I've learnt a lot of other new words too :P
same here,
some of my favs:
vittles, bloomin blinkin bally, vermin, dirk, bloodwrath, claymore, broadsword, shrew, vole, peckish and eulaliaa and wot-wot!
It also tuaght me a new way of things in general! I took to it like it was ment for me, but my friends and family thought I was a little crazy at first! :D ;D ;)
The one thing I remember that Redwall taught me was wot wot!!
I learned the word 'Claymore'. ;D
Redwall taught me several words....none of which I could name off of the top of my head because I'm now so familiar with them!
...with the exception of Eulalia, of course! I love that word. EULALIA!!!!!!!!!!
I learned several new words from the Redwall series. The first two words that I learned from it were Vice Versa (which means the other way around).
Lackadaisical. Ever since I saw that word in The Rogue Crew, it started popping up everywhere. Other than that, it just expanded my vocabulary like reading normally does. I did start using anbsoballylutely a lot...
I learned alot of new good describing words and other intresting redwall insults
I learned what it means to do food "full justice". It pops up everywhere in the Redwall books(thanks to all the food scenes).

It did help me to learn to describe better. I loved his writing style; it's so descriptive, enticing and thrilling.
I learned the words javelin, pike, vittles, dormitory, and great hall
So many words! Rook, javelin, claymore, a bunch of words about ships I can't remember right now, the list goes on and on!
My favorite word that I learned from Redwall is "truculent".
What does that mean?
I also learned:
Pray tell
Vessel
Keel
eulalia, victory.
Quote from: Skyblade on June 14, 2012, 12:00:24 PM
What does that mean?
Truculent means argumentative.
Abbey, vittles, vermin, to name more
Looking back before the reading the books, I feel like I was stupid back then. I have learned some much from Redwall, and it was useful during my canoe trip the past three days.
Abbey, vittles, vermin, scone, thither, and so much more.
These books taught me a lot of new plants and trees I never knew existed, that's for sure! Also, I never knew that a score was 20...but some flipping through pages and I eventually found it out. :P
all of the names of medieval weapons I learned from Redwall. I had no clue what a javelin was, or a lance, or even a sling!
I learned that a pike is a fish. I thought it was only a weapon. That's why I was confused when it says that Cluny battled with a pike.

Haha! I thought the same thing when I first read the book in the fifth grade. It'd be a little less impressive.
Yeah, I didn't understand it for quite a while.

Lol!
Cluny: I'm going to slap you with my fish!!!

I learned a lot of words, but I liked Dibbun, wot wot, and pong. I remember calling my youngest sister a Dibbun. And when I said something about there being an awful pong when we got new mulch for the flowerbeds, Mom had no idea what I was talking about, and I was so used to reading it in the Redwall books I forgot she'd never heard it before. Also, wot wot is a very useful word, wot!
Vittles.
That score meant 20.
Probably others that I don't know about.
Things to do with weapons and boats, most likely.
Oh, and a few things that aren't technically real words.
*thinks about the many times I've called Hazel a halfbaked excuse for a toad, and actually feels bad about it*
At least she always called me names right back, and we both didn't care.
I learned Corsair. That's all I remember learning.
I had a 10th-grade vocabulary when I was 9 years old, and I constantly look up words, even if I kind of know what they mean.
I am kind of obsessive over learning new words, their official definitions, and learning about prefixes and root
words, and all that.
